He\u2019s always been the type to hand-wash our cars himself <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(apparently, he\u2019s a \u201cman who polishes his car also polishes himself\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/wash-my-car\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to this blog<\/a>, lol)<\/span>, but when it comes to the soft top, the owner\u2019s manual clearly states, \u201cIt is not necessary to wash the convertible top every time you wash the vehicle.\u201d He was also told this at delivery.<\/p>\n<p>So, since it \u201cdidn\u2019t look that dirty to the eye,\u201d he hadn\u2019t washed it, and more than a year passed since the last care session.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10276\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_1614-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot of information online about how to wash a convertible top. Some say, \u201cIt\u2019s fine to use an automatic car wash,\u201d while others insist, \u201cAbsolutely no automatic washes! Only hand washing!\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n<p>However, for almost all convertible cars, whether domestic or imported, most manufacturers advise, \u201cDo not use automatic car washes or high-pressure washers as they may damage the soft top.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the way, in a previous blog post titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/porsche-owners-file-boxster-black-edition\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche Owners File #3: Boxster Black Edition Review<\/a>, the owner mentioned,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cI was worried about how to wash the soft top if it got dirty, whether washing it would be a hassle, and how much it would cost to replace it when old. But when I asked the dealer, they said, \u2018Don\u2019t be overly nervous, just wash it like a normal car.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, washing the soft top takes some courage, doesn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Porsches_Official_View\"><\/span>Porsche\u2019s Official View<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWhen in doubt, the best source is the Porsche owner\u2019s manual!\u201d So, I checked the Boxster series manual <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(2015 model revised edition)<\/span>, and here\u2019s what it says:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\"><strong>The lifespan and appearance of the convertible top can be preserved for a long time with proper care and handling.<\/strong> Improper care or handling can damage the convertible top or cause leaks.<\/p>\n<p>That said, it\u2019s not necessary to wash the soft top every time you wash the car. Usually, \u201cwashing the convertible top with clean water only\u201d is sufficient. Regarding specific care and cleaning instructions, it states:<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Daily_Handling\"><\/span>Daily Handling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u30fbTo prevent stains and wear, <strong>only open the convertible top when it is dry and clean<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u30fbAlways open the convertible top <strong>only in good weather<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(to avoid stains and scratches caused by moisture that may become permanent)<\/span>.<br \/>\n\u30fbSince prolonged exposure to sunlight can damage the fabric and rubber or cause fading, <strong>park the vehicle in the shade whenever possible<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u30fbDo not remove snow or ice with <strong>sharp-edged tools<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u30fbIf the convertible top cover or seams leak, treat with convertible top-specific care products.<br \/>\n\u30fb<strong>Remove bird droppings immediately<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(the acids in droppings can cause the rubber to swell and lead to leaks)<\/span>.<br \/>\n\u30fbIf the convertible top cover gets dirty, use a soft rubber sponge to gently rub off the dirt.<\/p>\n<p>Wow, there were so many things I didn\u2019t know. My husband once said, \u201cNever open the top right after it rains,\u201d and I wondered why \u2014 now I understand it\u2019s to avoid damage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_0633-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, some precautions about washing the soft top.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cleaning_Precautions\"><\/span>Cleaning Precautions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u30fbUsing a high-pressure washer or steam cleaner may damage the convertible top.<br \/>\n\u30fbSome automatic car washes may damage the convertible top.<br \/>\n\u30fbDo not apply <strong>hot wax treatments<\/strong> to the convertible top.<\/p>\n<p>So, high-pressure washers are definitely a no-go \u2014 they can easily cause damage. Now, the actual cleaning steps:<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Convertible_Top_Care_and_Cleaning\"><\/span>Convertible Top Care and Cleaning<span He said,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">It looked like the soft top wasn\u2019t dirty at all, but it was actually quite grimy and dull.
