A BMW 320i with a Manual Transmission Is Coming Home!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">Searching for a Manual-Transmission Car<\/h3>\n<p>The other day, after a change of heart, I wrote on the blog that I\u2019d decided to <strong>buy a used manual-transmission car of my own by the end of this year\u2014ideally by summer<\/strong>. I checked Goo and Carsensor day after day, but hardly any new listings seemed to come up\u2026<\/p>\n<p>When I told my husband, \u201c<strong>I guess used-car listings aren\u2019t updated with new cars every single day<\/strong>,\u201d he said,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Well, even if new used-car listings are added every day, it\u2019s not like the exact model you\u2019re interested in will show up every day.<\/p>\n<p>Fair enough. Of course he was right.<\/p>\n<p>And even when a car looked \u201ccheap!\u201d based on price alone, it often had very high mileage or was so old that it seemed likely to need a lot of maintenance. Then I spotted one that looked promising: <strong>low mileage, a pretty good price, and a nice-looking example<\/strong>. When I asked my husband about it, he said,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">It\u2019s cheap because the suspension, exhaust, wheels, and other parts have been modified. <strong>If it were stock, it\u2019d probably cost a bit more with the same mileage and model year<\/strong>. Modifications can be fine if you want a car for track days or spirited driving, though.<\/p>\n<p>When I said that I couldn\u2019t tell at a glance whether a car had been modified or was stock, he explained,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">The listing title mentions a Remus exhaust, and <strong>the photos show things like the suspension springs to highlight the modifications<\/strong>. In general, certified pre-owned cars should have few, if any, modifications, so it\u2019s a good idea to look for listings marked \u201ccertified pre-owned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I see\u2014there\u2019s a lot to learn about searching for a car.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re looking for a car that\u2019s <strong>not too old, low-mileage, reasonably priced, unmodified and stock, and certified pre-owned<\/strong>, there aren\u2019t many to choose from. And if you do find one, plenty of other people will want it too, so it\u2019s likely to sell quickly.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, if I get picky and say, \u201c<strong>I want this color!<\/strong>\u201d it feels like the right car will never come along\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, I\u2019m amazed that people manage to <strong>find and buy the car they want among all those listings<\/strong>. It really is impressive.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/px.a8.net\/svt\/ejp?a8mat=2TXJ1O+6KD3XU+14EG+6PZF5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www21.a8.net\/svt\/bgt?aid=171205548397&amp;wid=001&amp;eno=01&amp;mid=s00000005236001129000&amp;mc=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www11.a8.net\/0.gif?a8mat=2TXJ1O+6KD3XU+14EG+6PZF5\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Cars Are Expensive<\/h3>\n<p>Since deciding to buy a car myself and starting to research the costs, I\u2019ve really come to appreciate just how much money <strong>owning a car can take<\/strong>. I knew that already, of course, but it feels very different when you\u2019re about to pay for one yourself.<\/p>\n<p>And buying a car is only the beginning. The ongoing costs can really add up: <strong>parking, fuel, vehicle tax, tolls, inspection fees, and repairs if something breaks\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each expense may seem manageable on its own, but add them all together and the total can get pretty substantial.<\/p>\n<p>Five and a half years ago, when I became a mother for the first time, I thought, \u201c<strong>Anyone who\u2019s gone through the agony of childbirth is incredible<\/strong>,\u201d and gained a newfound respect for mothers everywhere. Now I feel the same way about car owners: <strong>people who own a car are amazing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">A BMW 320i Is Coming Home\u2026<\/h3>\n<p>Since announcing that I was going to buy a manual-transmission car, I\u2019ve received all kinds of comments on the blog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">It might be a good idea to work out what you need to improve in your manual driving before choosing a car.<br \/>\nIf the issue when driving a Porsche is that <strong>your shifts or clutch engagement are jerky<\/strong>, you could get a sportier model and practice easing off the throttle and using the clutch\u2019s friction point.<br \/>\nOn the other hand, if <strong>you\u2019re slipping the clutch for too long or revving too high when pulling away<\/strong>, practicing quick, smooth starts in an ordinary car while using the clutch as little as possible could help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">Italian and French manual-transmission cars are easy to drive, don\u2019t stall easily, and have a decent amount of power. I think taking lots of test drives is important.<\/p>\n<p>Those comments were really helpful. I thought, \u201cSince I have the chance, <strong>it might be worth test-driving manual cars from a range of manufacturers<\/strong>.\u201d So the other day, my family and I stopped by a used BMW dealership after spotting a promising car on a used-car website. My husband had said,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">This one\u2019s rear-wheel drive, so it should be good for practicing the basics of manual driving. It\u2019s turbocharged, so it has plenty of torque low down and should be fun to drive with a manual gearbox. Plus, the 2.0-liter engine means the taxes won\u2019t be too high.<\/p>\n<p>I had no intention of buying it at all. We\u2019d only popped in for a quick look. But then\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Believe it or not, I bought it on the spot! ((((\uff1b\uff9f\u0414\uff9f)))<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Even I was surprised. My heart kept pounding for quite a while after signing the contract. I saw it in person, climbed in, and got to try out the clutch and gearshift\u2014and it just clicked.
