Depending on how much time he has, he might be gone for two nights and three days or a whole week, and his destination could be Tohoku or Shikoku. His dream, he says, is to spend a solid month on the road someday\uff08\u7b11\uff09<\/p>\n<p>When you hear \u201croad trip,\u201d you might picture a fun journey in your favorite car, with stops at tourist attractions and plenty of chances to sample local specialties. That\u2019s not how my husband does it.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, he barely stops for lunch and spends the whole day driving\u2014from morning until night, sometimes for as long as 12 hours.<\/p>\n<p>What is this, some kind of endurance test? (-_-)w<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23256\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1434.jpg\" alt=\"\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u3067\u30c4\u30fc\u30ea\u30f3\u30b0\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The other night, I called him while he was away on a road trip. His voice was hoarse, so I asked, \u201c<strong>What happened?!<\/strong\u201d He said, \u201c<strong>I haven\u2019t spoken to a single person all day. This is basically the first time I\u2019ve opened my mouth, so my voice isn\u2019t coming out properly.<\/strong>\u201d \uff08\u7b11\uff09<\/p>\n<p>I once asked him, \u201cWhy push yourself so hard to drive? Since you\u2019ve gone somewhere new, why not try the local food or take it easy and get some rest?\u201d He replied:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">I don\u2019t need any of that. I\u2019ve come all this way to drive roads that are too far away to visit on an ordinary day. If I were traveling with the family, that\u2019d be different, but stopping to eat or relax would be a waste of time. More than anything, <strong>I want to spend every possible minute behind the wheel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, after his last long road trip, my husband came home looking a little thinner, with a smaller-looking face w<\/p>\n<p>He also doesn\u2019t stay at hot-spring inns or luxurious hotels on these trips. More often than not, he chooses a Route Inn.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23257\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1930.jpg\" alt=\"\u30eb\u30fc\u30c8\u30a4\u30f3\u30db\u30c6\u30eb\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I asked him, \u201c<strong>Why do you always stay at Route Inn?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Route Inn hotels usually have pretty spacious parking lots. They\u2019re also <strong>often located near expressway exits<\/strong>, which makes them convenient for road trips. <strong>The rates are reasonable, and breakfast is included for free<\/strong>, so they\u2019re good value, too.<br \/>\nI usually decide on a general direction and then play it by ear on the day, so it\u2019s a hassle to look for somewhere to stay each time. Route Inn hotels are all over Japan, and the service is pretty consistent, so you can\u2019t really go wrong with one.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve stayed at Route Inn hotels all over the country. I\u2019ve stayed so many times that I feel like I could write a whole blog about the features and little differences at each location.<\/p>\n<p>That was his explanation.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Road_Trip_Is_Like_a_Training_Retreat\"><\/span>A Road Trip Is Like a Training Retreat<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>My husband loves cars and driving, and says there\u2019s no greater pleasure than exploring Japan\u2019s beautiful roads. But he also says that taking a solo road trip is <strong>an important chance to think things through on his own<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It gives him time to reflect on his personal goals and the future of his company, and to sort through his thoughts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">For me, a road trip is kind of like a monk walking through the mountains to train w That\u2019s why I drive with such single-minded dedication.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how he once put it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23258\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1816.jpg\" alt=\"\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u3067\u30c4\u30fc\u30ea\u30f3\u30b0\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first time I heard him say that, I thought, \u201c<strong>Oh, come on\u2014you\u2019re making it sound so noble.<\/strong>\u201d But when he comes back from a road trip, he often seems refreshed, saying things like, \u201c<strong>I\u2019ve thought it all through, and this is the direction I\u2019m going to take<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>I\u2019ve figured out a new goal.<\/strong>\u201d These days, I can see that road trips matter to him in all kinds of ways.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_I_Think_When_My_Husband_Goes_on_a_Long_Road_Trip\"><\/span>What I Think When My Husband Goes on a Long Road Trip<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When I write about this, people often tell me, \u201c<strong>Mina, you\u2019re such an understanding wife to be okay with your husband going on solo road trips.<\/strong>\u201d The truth is, I\u2019m not nearly that perfect a wife\uff08\u7b11\uff09<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not the type to <strong>put up with things and just go along with what my husband wants<\/strong>, or to <strong>devote myself to supporting him<\/strong>. I simply think, \u201c<strong>I get to do what I want day to day, so he should be free to do what he wants, too.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So when my husband heads out on a solo road trip, <strong>I take the kids to my parents\u2019 house and enjoy a break from the housework and childcare<\/strong>. My parents are happy to see their grandchildren, and the kids have fun playing with their grandparents. It works out as <strong>a happy arrangement for everyone in our family<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But the flip side is that if <strong>I couldn\u2019t do what I wanted while my husband had all the freedom<\/strong>, I\u2019d probably lose it and be furious\u2026 <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(So, no, I\u2019m definitely not a perfect wife w)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23259\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/IMG_1798.jpg\" alt=\"\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u3067\u30c4\u30fc\u30ea\u30f3\u30b0\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ever since we got married, my husband has told me:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cIf you want to be a full-time homemaker, go for it. If you want to work, then work. If you don\u2019t like cleaning or laundry, we can get robot appliances or hire a housekeeping service. Whatever you do, <strong>just do what you want and make sure you\u2019re happy.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And he has stood by those words. Whether I was pushing myself so hard at work that my health suffered, decided to step back from work and focus on raising the kids, or started this blog because I wanted something to devote myself to beyond parenting and contribute to society, he always quietly supported me, saying, \u201c<strong>Do what you want, the way you want to.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I hope I can support him, too, by standing by the things he wants to do and the things he loves.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re hardly experts on marriage, but after all we\u2019ve experienced together, I\u2019ve come to believe that <strong>a healthy amount of space and mutual respect are essential in a marriage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Because I trust him, I don\u2019t feel the need to interfere. And when I see him take on things I could never do with such ease, or carry his responsibilities and overcome whatever comes his way, I find myself thinking, \u201c<strong>Go on as many solo road trips as you like.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll keep cheering him on as he heads out alone. And the funny thing is, I used to have absolutely no interest in cars, but now I find myself hoping he\u2019ll one day make his dream of spending a solid month on the road come true.
