I was thinking, &#8220;<strong>If I buy, it\u2019ll be around summer. Realistically, I\u2019ll replace the Golf when its inspection comes up in August<\/strong>,&#8221; so I intended to take my time looking until then.<\/p>\n<p>But life is full of surprises\u2014I really felt that! lol<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">From VW to BMW<\/h3>\n<p>The other day, when I went to the Volkswagen dealer to get an appraisal on my Golf 7, I casually asked, &#8220;<strong>Do you have any MT cars available now?<\/strong>&#8221; The answer was, &#8220;<strong>The only MT car available here right now is the up! GTI<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/img_91cb9daa249dd975a757b3b5a290126e101803.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"726\" height=\"484\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Image source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webcg.net\/articles\/-\/38232\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"bold typesquare_option\">WebCG Volkswagen up! GTI (FF\/6MT) [Overseas Test Drive]<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I see\u2026 The up! might be nice, but it\u2019s a bit too compact. Considering I\u2019m replacing the Golf, I told them I wanted at least something about the size of the Golf. That was the end of the conversation, and I left the dealer much sooner than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>On the way home, I said, &#8220;<strong>I thought I\u2019d get to test drive something since I went all the way there, but nothing happened. I\u2019m not sure if they really want to sell or not\u2026<\/strong>&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">So, while we\u2019re at it, why don\u2019t we check out that used BMW 320i (MT) I found online before? The dealer is pretty close from here anyway.<\/p>\n<p>We called right away and confirmed the 320i was still available, so we decided to go see it casually.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">BMW\u2019s MT Cars<\/h3>\n<p>The BMW used car dealership we arrived at was a large store with <strong>about 100 cars on display at all times<\/strong>. After being guided inside and filling out a questionnaire, a seasoned and steady salesman asked me this question right away:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">So, you\u2019re here for an MT car today, right? Just to confirm, you want a manual, not an automatic?<\/p>\n<p>My husband replied, &#8220;<strong>Yes, we\u2019re looking for an MT, so that\u2019s correct.<\/strong>&#8221; The salesman then continued,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">Understood. I hate to ask, but your husband says MT is fine\u2014are you really okay with an MT car?<\/p>\n<p>I answered, &#8220;I personally want an MT car, so yes, I\u2019m fine with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">Wow (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!! I\u2019ve been in sales for a while, but this is a pretty rare case!<\/p>\n<p>No kidding.<\/p>\n<p>I explained, &#8220;I wasn\u2019t interested in cars at first, but my husband encouraged me to get my license upgraded, and <strong>three years later, I\u2019m still frustrated I can\u2019t drive an MT, so I want to buy one myself and learn to drive it.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">Well, your husband really brainwashed you well, huh? (laughs)<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right. When I think about it, I was completely brainwashed by my husband (-_-) lol.<\/p>\n<p>After that, the salesman told us a lot about BMW\u2019s MT cars. Apparently, well-maintained MT cars from BMW <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(and not just BMW)<\/span> are rare nationwide. We had trouble finding a BMW 3 Series MT online as well.<\/p>\n<p>This dealership is large and carries relatively rare cars like <strong>MT cars, left-hand drive, and higher displacement models<\/strong>, so customers come from all over Japan. Naturally, well-maintained cars sell quickly. But once you own an MT car, although the value drops, the demand never disappears, so prices tend to bottom out at a certain level.<\/p>\n<p>This didn\u2019t sound like sales talk\u2014I really believed it.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Germany, <strong>40% of people still choose MT even for the 7 Series<\/strong>. Germany is amazing. That makes me realize how little demand there really is for MT in Japan\u2026<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Meeting the BMW 320i<\/h3>\n<p>After the talk, we got to see the actual car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10826\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2188-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The car we went to see was  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">a 2014 BMW 320i (MT), Glacier Silver body color, certified used car, FR, 42,000 km, with minor scratches but no accident history or modifications, and a 4.5 rating on Car Sensor.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing it in person, it looked cooler than I expected.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10744\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/IMG_2192-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10822\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0007.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s a 2014 model, it didn\u2019t look old and still felt fresh. <strong>My first impression was quite good.<\/strong> But you never know until you actually drive it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I sat in the driver\u2019s seat and cautiously pressed the clutch\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The clutch is light (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Not light in a bad way like sloppy, but pleasantly light. For me, the <strong>only comparison is the Boxster\u2019s clutch<\/strong>, and compared to that, this clutch was very light, shallow, and easy to press. The shift lever also shifted smoothly and felt good in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>This looks like it\u2019ll be really easy to operate the MT!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-10824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0027.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For someone like me who long thought, &#8220;<strong>There\u2019s no way I can drive an MT car<\/strong>,&#8221; this was a completely new feeling. When I sat in this 320i, <strong>I could for the first time vividly imagine myself smoothly driving an MT car<\/strong>, and I got so excited I couldn\u2019t stop. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(If I can\u2019t do it with this, there\u2019s no hope.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Excited, I shouted to my husband outside,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">The clutch is super light and shallow, and the shift lever is so easy to use! I really feel like I can drive this!<\/p>\n<p>After that, my husband sat in the driver\u2019s seat and started the engine, while I kept asking the salesman silly questions\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">Me: Does it have auto-hold for hill starts?<br \/>\nSalesman: No, this has a handbrake, so it generally doesn\u2019t have that function. Most MT cars don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">Me: If you stall, you have to restart the engine, right? The Boxster automatically starts the engine when you press the clutch, but this doesn\u2019t have that, right?<br \/>\nSalesman: That\u2019s right, it doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">Me: When it\u2019s delivered, I have to pick it up and drive it home myself, right? That might be a bit too much for me\u2026<br \/>\nSalesman: If that\u2019s the case, I can deliver it to your home, so no worries!<\/p>\n<p>Asking so many questions at this stage made me start to feel a bit embarrassed, so I stopped. Then my husband asked the important questions:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Does the tire tread still have life? Which scratches are the minor ones? Can I open the hood and take a look? What size are the wheels? This isn\u2019t a modernized model, right? It\u2019s completely stock?<\/p>\n<p>He asked all the right things, while I was stuck asking trivial stuff. I need to reflect on that\u2026<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Ordering the BMW 320i!<\/h3>\n<p>Afterwards, we went back inside and had them calculate options and the estimate. The car\u2019s inspection had already expired, so including inspection costs, the final price was about 2.5 million yen.<\/p>\n<p>Since I\u2019m used to seeing quotes for the GT3 Touring and Panamera Turbo, I thought, &#8220;<strong>Wow, this is a great deal for less than Porsche options!<\/strong>&#8221; for a moment, but then I reminded myself, &#8220;<strong>Calm down, Mina, you\u2019re buying this yourself\u2026 (-_-)<\/strong>&#8221; and realized it\u2019s not exactly cheap.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I really liked it, and good-condition MT cars are rare, so I nervously asked my husband,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">What should I do? I really want this, but I\u2019ve only seen one car\u2026 Is it okay to decide on my first car so easily?<\/p>\n<p>He said,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Whether you buy or not is up to you. When buying a car, it\u2019s not about logic, it\u2019s about whether it feels right. If it feels right, buy it. If not, don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>In that sense, it definitely felt right\u2026 but just a few hours ago, I had no intention of buying, so I wondered, &#8220;<strong>Am I just being swept up by the veteran salesman\u2019s talk?<\/strong>&#8221; and struggled for about five minutes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">I decided! I\u2019ll buy it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2026And that\u2019s what I said. Looking at the clock, only two hours had passed since we arrived at the dealer. How\u2019s that for a quick decision?<\/p>\n<p>The process moved so fast I barely had time to doubt, and I paid a 10,000 yen deposit <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(which was all I had in my wallet)<\/span>, completing the order.<\/p>\n<p>Delivery is scheduled for mid-May.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Until the Day I Master Driving an MT Porsche<\/h3>\n<p>On the way home, my husband said,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">By the way, when the F30 first came out, a friend had a 2014 BMW 320i (M Sport) and let me drive it. It was amazing. Even with 19-inch wheels, it handled well, rode smoothly, and felt so premium I thought, &#8220;<strong>Is this a 5 Series?<\/strong>&#8221; This car has 17-inch wheels and a lighter suspension, so I think it\u2019ll be fun to drive. \u2026But seriously, can you really drive it? lol<\/p>\n<p>The BMW will replace the current Golf, so there\u2019s no turning back now. I just have to <strong>face it head-on and master this 320i.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That said, it still doesn\u2019t feel real, and I\u2019m sure I\u2019ll make tons of mistakes every day after delivery\u2026 But aiming to be a &#8220;<strong>cool woman confidently driving an MT Porsche<\/strong>,&#8221; I\u2019ll do my best.
