It was recently purchased by my brother-in-law. He kindly said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you take it for a spin?\u201d so after finishing our errands at the house, my husband and I decided to give it a try.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10892\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2354-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This G-Class has attracted a lot of attention as it is the <strong>first full model change in 39 years<\/strong>. It\u2019s extremely popular and apparently quite hard to get in Japan right now.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">AMG G63 Specifications<\/h3>\n<p>The AMG G63 is equipped with a <strong>4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo engine<\/strong> producing 585ps and 850Nm of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. <strong>I\u2019d never heard of a 9-speed AT before lol<\/strong> It accelerates from 0-100 km\/h in 4.4 seconds, with a top speed of 220 km\/h <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(240 km\/h for models with the AMG Driver\u2019s Package)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle weighs 2560 kg, with dimensions of 4873 mm in length, 1984 mm in width, and 1966 mm in height. Wow, this is one seriously huge car.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, some notable points about my brother-in-law\u2019s G63 include the <strong>European-spec dual side-exit stock mufflers<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I was surprised the exhaust pipes come out the sides, not the rear)<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10889\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0142-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>the <strong>European-spec 22-inch stock wheels<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(the tires and wheels together reportedly cost over 1 million yen (about $9,000) easily (\uff1b\uff9f\u0414\uff9f))<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10890\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0152-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>and a very rare design for the <strong>spare wheel cover with AMG decal<\/strong> <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(custom made)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10891\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0140-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So first, I got in the passenger seat. At first, I didn\u2019t know how to open the door, but after a while I figured out you <strong>push the keyhole on the door to open it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10894\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2285-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since the car sits so high, I struggled a bit getting in. When I said, \u201cI don\u2019t know where to put my feet or hands to support myself,\u201d my brother-in-law laughed and said, <strong>\u201cI still don\u2019t know either lol.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This G63 has the AMG Exclusive Package, making the interior more luxurious. The seats are thick and supportive, offering a relaxed feel, but according to my brother-in-law, <strong>\u201cCompared to the S63 AMG, the seats are smaller and get tiring on long drives.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0173-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once we started driving, I was surprised at how high the seating position was. It\u2019s much higher than it looks from the outside, making it very easy to drive despite the wide body.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2356-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The ride quality reminded me a lot of the <strong>relaxed feel of the S63 AMG coupe<\/strong> we had before.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"DKPsrmjPru\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/amg-s63-coupe-review\/\">\u30e1\u30eb\u30bb\u30c7\u30b9\u30fb\u30d9\u30f3\u30c4AMG S63 4MATIC \u30af\u30fc\u30da \uff08C217\uff09\u3092\u6240\u6709\u3057\u3066\u307f\u305f\u611f\u60f3<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/amg-s63-coupe-review\/embed\/#?secret=DKPsrmjPru\" data-secret=\"DKPsrmjPru\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" title=\"&#8220;\u30e1\u30eb\u30bb\u30c7\u30b9\u30fb\u30d9\u30f3\u30c4AMG S63 4MATIC \u30af\u30fc\u30da \uff08C217\uff09\u3092\u6240\u6709\u3057\u3066\u307f\u305f\u611f\u60f3&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another surprising thing was the <strong>number of bugs hitting the windshield on the highway.<\/strong> You constantly hear the \u201csplat splat\u201d of insects hitting and getting crushed, and the windshield quickly gets dirty\u2026 (-_-) According to my brother-in-law,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cBecause the windshield is so upright, it can\u2019t be helped. But it gets even worse when driving on the highway at night. You have to wash the car right after just one highway run. This is a <strong>G-Wagen owner classic<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Classic, huh\u2026 lol<\/p>\n<p>After my husband drove for a while, it was my turn. While the high seating position made it easy to drive, <strong>handling in curves was tricky.<\/strong> Even when steering like I would in the Panamera <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(ours has rear-axle steering, so maybe that made it harder)<\/span>, I couldn\u2019t turn as sharply as I wanted and ended up making wide turns several times.<\/p>\n<p>Off-road vehicles designed to handle rough, unpaved roads are built so that <strong>the steering has a bit of play to avoid being too twitchy<\/strong>, which explains this design.<\/p>\n<p>I see \u2014 even within the same car category, sports cars and off-roaders are completely different.<\/p>\n<p>I drove for about 10 minutes, but I was so excited thinking, <strong>\u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m driving a G-Wagen!\u201d<\/strong> that I don\u2019t really remember much about the ride quality. What I wrote above is basically all I recall <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(pretty thin content, huh)<\/span>. So I\u2019ll share my husband\u2019s impressions next.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">AMG G63 Husband\u2019s Review<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Doors \/ Interior<\/h4>\n<p>You open the door by pressing the keyhole on the handle, accompanied by a satisfying \u201cclick.\u201d This feels very similar to an air-cooled Porsche. The door latch uses an old-fashioned mechanism unlike modern cars. The door closes with a metallic \u201cclang,\u201d but because it seals tightly, <strong>you have to be careful not to leave it half-closed if the windows are up.<\/strong> This is also very reminiscent of air-cooled Porsches.<\/p>\n<p>The interior scent is similar to the AMG S63 coupe, with a lavish and splendid cabin. This particular car features off-white leather, and an IWC clock is prominently mounted below the center console.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10905\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0162-1-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Engine \/ Ride Quality<\/h4>\n<p>Starting the engine awakens the <strong>M117-type 585ps V8<\/strong> with a lively roar. It\u2019s noticeably louder than the S63 coupe.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10897\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2286-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The car moves off smoothly, and <strong>you don\u2019t feel the 2.5-ton weight at all when starting.<\/strong> The low-speed roll and smoothness are among the best.<\/p>\n<p>Because the steering gear ratio is low, <strong>you need to turn the wheel a bit more than usual to avoid wide turns.<\/strong> This requires some getting used to, especially when switching from a sports car. The tires are 22-inch Continental SportContact 5s, which fit the car perfectly. In Comfort mode, there\u2019s no harshness or heavy feeling in the suspension.<\/p>\n<p>In stop-and-go city traffic, <strong>as long as you\u2019re gentle with the throttle, the ride is quite smooth and gentle.<\/strong> However, if you\u2019re rough with the accelerator, the G63\u2019s power can cause some jerky moments. This is likely due to differences in driving style between the owner and myself, causing the automatic transmission\u2019s learning system to mismatch.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Highway<\/h4>\n<p>Leaving the city and entering the highway, pressing the accelerator hard at the toll gate delivers <strong>quick and powerful acceleration<\/strong>, yet again, you don\u2019t feel the car\u2019s weight. It actually feels like driving a lighter car around 1600 kg.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10907\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2300-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The specs say \u201c585ps, 0-100 km\/h in 4.4 seconds,\u201d but <strong>due to the high ride height, the actual acceleration doesn\u2019t feel as intense as the numbers suggest.<\/strong> Still, on Japanese highways, it\u2019s nearly unbeatable. Even if you\u2019re in a sports car, <strong>you definitely don\u2019t want to challenge the G63 to an acceleration battle.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The exhaust note is a somewhat dry, rumbling V8 growl. <strong>It sounds drier than the S63 coupe.<\/strong> Opening the exhaust valves with a button makes the engine louder and more fun to drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10911\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2352-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I haven\u2019t driven the previous generation properly, so I can\u2019t compare ride quality in detail, but <strong>it\u2019s definitely not the feel of a traditional ladder-frame hardcore off-roader.<\/strong> It\u2019s closer to a regular SUV <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(but only \u201ccloser\u201d)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>On straight roads and in city driving, it feels like a passenger car, but in curves and high-speed corners, there\u2019s a bit of body sway. When I drove the Mercedes-Benz GLS before, even in those situations, it felt <strong>more planted to the ground<\/strong>, which is a difference from the G-Class.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"EH510uw8Rr\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/about-benz-gls450\/\">\u30e1\u30eb\u30bb\u30c7\u30b9\u30fb\u30d9\u30f3\u30c4GLS450\u3067LA\u89b3\u5149\u2212\u4e57\u308a\u5fc3\u5730\u306e\u611f\u60f3\u3084\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u3068\u306e\u9055\u3044<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/about-benz-gls450\/embed\/#?secret=EH510uw8Rr\" data-secret=\"EH510uw8Rr\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" title=\"&#8220;\u30e1\u30eb\u30bb\u30c7\u30b9\u30fb\u30d9\u30f3\u30c4GLS450\u3067LA\u89b3\u5149\u2212\u4e57\u308a\u5fc3\u5730\u306e\u611f\u60f3\u3084\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u3068\u306e\u9055\u3044&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Modes \/ Transmission<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Comfort mode is best for cruising steadily on the highway.<\/strong> The ride is well-damped and smooth, with no unpleasant vibrations or jolts.<\/p>\n<p>Switching to <strong>Sport mode via the switch by the hand<\/strong> stiffens the suspension a bit, and even when following fast cars in the passing lane on the quiet Chugoku Expressway, you feel solid contact with the road.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2293-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Sport Plus mode, the suspension stiffens further and stability improves. However, <strong>the ride becomes harsher with more bumps and vibrations, so personally I prefer Sport mode for the best balance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10908\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2296-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using manual mode with the paddles, the shifts aren\u2019t especially quick but not slow either. <strong>There\u2019s no shift shock, making it a comfortable transmission.<\/strong> It feels capable of sporty driving when needed.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Brakes and More<\/h4>\n<p>The brakes are satisfactory, providing sufficient stopping power. Control is good, and <strong>like a Mercedes, the balance between pedal effort and stroke is excellent<\/strong>, so the harder you press, the stronger the braking.<\/p>\n<p>Next, we took the car on mountain roads. It\u2019s not a car to talk about cornering with, so of course there\u2019s noticeable body roll and vertical movement, but it does its job well, so you don\u2019t feel the anxiety or instability of a typical family car. Rather, it\u2019s a car that makes you want to drive calmly without rushing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10906\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2303-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Overall Impression<\/h3>\n<p>Although it\u2019s an AMG, <strong>the immense power feels like it\u2019s there not to race but to provide a sense of \u2018room to spare\u2019.<\/strong> Even on empty roads, you don\u2019t really feel like pushing it hard; instead, you want to cruise peacefully. This is completely different from Porsche Macan or Cayenne.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2351-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sports car enthusiasts might find it lacking excitement,<\/strong> but with its great visibility, ease of driving, and comfort, <strong>it\u2019s a great choice for those who love the G-Class design and want a relaxed long-distance cruiser with family or friends around town.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If I get the chance, next time I\u2019d love to test its off-road performance by driving on snowy roads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"AMG G63 The other day, when we visited my husband\u2019s family home with the kids, I noticed a new AMG G63 (W464) parked in the driveway.
