As before, this is mostly about driving, with very little in the way of sightseeing tips\u2014but we hope you enjoy the ride.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Tohoku Boxster Road Trip: Day 3<\/h3>\n<p>Day three. I looked out the hotel window to find a dramatic change in the weather: clear blue skies at last. The wind was strong, but it was a perfect day to drop the top. Who needs music?<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is what convertibles are all about.<\/strong> It\u2019s an escape from the everyday\u2014a driving experience unlike any other. You could say this is exactly why I drive a car with a roof that folds away. The wind, the light, the sound\u2026everything becomes part of the perfect drive.<\/p>\n<p>We joined Prefectural Route 210 and took the Ch\u014dkai Blue Line straight up toward Mount Ch\u014dkai. In Sport Plus mode, working through second to fourth gear, the Boxster quickly gained altitude. The blips on each downshift echoed through the mountains, and I couldn\u2019t help talking to myself.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11170\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC08335-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"View from inside the Boxster on Mount Ch\u014dkai\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Man, the Boxster is just so good\u2026<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though it was Golden Week\u2014the Japanese holiday period around the start of May\u2014the roads were quiet. As we climbed at our own pace, the outside temperature gauge began hovering around 5\u20136\u00b0C, and the air grew noticeably cooler. Near the summit, mist rolled in and snowbanks\u2014some four or five meters high\u2014rose beside the road, creating an almost otherworldly scene.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11171\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC08350-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"View from inside the Boxster on Mount Ch\u014dkai\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11172\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC08366-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Mount Ch\u014dkai\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_6288-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"The Boxster on Mount Ch\u014dkai\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, I kept the Boxster\u2019s top down even in these conditions. <strong>With the heater on, the cabin was perfectly comfortable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After leaving the summit, we began our descent down the north side of the Ch\u014dkai Blue Line. On the way, a <strong>red 991.2 GT3 came charging uphill<\/strong>. \u201cOh, a facelifted GT3!\u201d I thought, but our meeting was over in an instant. I watched its magnificent shape in my rearview mirror as the Boxster continued downhill.<\/p>\n<p>I later learned that <strong>the GT3\u2019s owner was a reader of this blog.<\/strong> He messaged my wife on Twitter to say he thought he might have seen my Boxster on Mount Ch\u014dkai. What are the odds of that?<\/p>\n<p>The north side of the Ch\u014dkai Blue Line offers spectacular scenery. As we lost altitude, the mist cleared, revealing <strong>a vast panorama stretching down to the Sea of Japan<\/strong>. I eased off the pace and took each corner carefully, savoring the view.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11173\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC08410-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Heading north from the summit of Mount Ch\u014dkai\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC08856-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Near the foot of the mountain, a sign pointed to the <strong>Ch\u014dkai Green Line<\/strong>. It wasn\u2019t on our original itinerary, but we decided to give Prefectural Route 312 a try. The first stretch was a fast, open road, much like a rural agricultural route, and it was a joy to drive. As we climbed higher, it became clear that the road led to Nikaho Plateau.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The plateau was dotted with wind turbines, with open grassland all around.<\/strong> It felt like a smaller version of the Milk Road in Aso, Kumamoto. Mountains appeared and disappeared behind the clouds in the distance. Despite it being Golden Week, there was hardly any traffic, and we practically had the road to ourselves. I soaked in the hotel\u2019s large public bath, stretched thoroughly as I replayed the day\u2019s scenery in my mind, and turned in early.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC08950-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset over the Sea of Japan\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Tohoku Boxster Road Trip: Day 4<\/h3>\n<p>The next morning, I wolfed down breakfast at the hotel buffet and got ready to go. The Boxster had been sitting in the parking lot, and after so many miles, it was filthy. <strong>Dead bugs made the front end look as if it had a mustache, while dust and road grime blackened the rear bumper and muddy water had splattered the sides.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I wet a microfiber cloth from the hotel, sprayed the car generously with a diluted solution of SurLuster Zero Water that I\u2019d brought along, and gently wiped away the loosened grime. Ready to go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A freshly washed car somehow feels like it runs better<\/strong>\u2014I\u2019m sure plenty of you know the feeling.<\/p>\n<p>Today, instead of following the coast, we\u2019d head inland. First stop: Lake Tazawa. I remembered seeing it in my elementary school social studies atlas, where it was labeled \u201c<strong>Japan\u2019s deepest lake<\/strong>.\u201d I\u2019d always wanted to see it for myself.<\/p>\n<p>We took Route 13, then Route 46, before joining Route 105. From there, we followed Prefectural Route 60 to the lakeshore. <strong>The water was an incredible shade of blue, unlike any lake I\u2019d seen before\u2014so beautiful it seemed to pull you in.<\/strong> We parked by the lake, took a break to admire the view, then set off counterclockwise around its shores.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11188\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC08425-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Road along the shore of Lake Tazawa\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11189\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC08983-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Tazawa\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_6193-1-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Tazawa and the Boxster\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then we turned onto Route 341 and headed for Hachimantai along a sublime mountain road, its broad lanes and gentle curves seeming to go on forever. You don\u2019t often find roads this good in Kansai.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Wow, Tohoku is incredible.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My right foot naturally pressed harder on the Boxster\u2019s accelerator.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_6293-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>We joined the Hachimantai Aspite Line and chose a route that loops counterclockwise around Hachimantai.<\/strong><br \/>\nAs the Boxster climbed, snowbanks appeared along the roadside, just like on Mount Ch\u014dkai. The scenery was reminiscent of the Shiga-Kusatsu Kogen Route. More tourist traffic appeared as we neared the summit, but the views were so spectacular that it hardly mattered.<\/p>\n<p>The route alternated between smooth, flowing bends and tight hairpins. <strong>With my rather clumsy heel-and-toe downshifts,<\/strong> I climbed in sync with the Boxster.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11192\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC08566-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"The Boxster on the Aspite Line\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11159\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_6294-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"Hachimantai and the Boxster\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11157\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_6295-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Hachimantai and the Boxster\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Afterward, we descended to the foothills, then headed back toward Hachimantai on Prefectural Route 23. This road had more tourists and tour buses, so it was hard to make much progress. We caught occasional glimpses of Mount Iwate before heading north again on Route 341.<\/p>\n<p>As we passed through Kazuno, <strong>I spotted a 970-generation Panamera Turbo at a gas station<\/strong> and found myself thinking, \u201cI\u2019d love to drive a Panamera around here.\u201d My thoughts drifted to the Panamera waiting at home as we continued on Route 103 toward Lake Towada. Route 103 was wide and quiet\u2014a wonderfully relaxing road for a cruise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the time we neared Lake Towada, the sun was sinking and the lakeshore was bathed in golden light.<\/strong> We tried to stop at a viewpoint along the way, but the parking lot was full, so we gave up and followed Route 454 clockwise around the lake.<\/p>\n<p>This route, however, had a lot of loose stones on the road, and the lanes weren\u2019t very wide. It wasn\u2019t enjoyable at all, but we stuck with it and headed for Aomori City.<\/p>\n<p>As we continued on the Boxster along Route 102 and then Route 103, <strong>Mount Hakkoda drew closer<\/strong>. This was another fantastic mountain road. Traffic was a little heavier, but many drivers moved aside to let us through. <strong>I didn\u2019t hesitate to give them a thank-you hazard-light flash as I pulled past in second gear in Sport Plus mode, then pressed on.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We stopped briefly at the Mount Iwaki viewpoint to watch the sunset.<br \/>\nA young couple in an old Land Cruiser kept changing the car\u2019s position and angle, taking photo after photo of their ride against the evening sky. \u201c<strong>Car lovers are all the same, whatever they drive or whatever their style.<\/strong>\u201d I thought with a smile, before continuing on to our hotel in Aomori City.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DSC09210-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"The Boxster in Aomori Prefecture\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11156\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_6297-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"The Boxster in Aomori Prefecture\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_6195-800x533.jpeg\" alt=\"The Boxster at the Mount Iwaki viewpoint\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(To be continued)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Next Up: The Final Leg Through Aomori, Morioka, and Aizu<\/h3>\n<p>What did you think?
