From Delivery Day to My First Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">Delivery Day for Our BMW 320i<\/h3>\n<p>At last, <strong>our BMW 320i (F30) had arrived!<\/strong> It was a 2014 model with a manual transmission\u2014and my very first car. I never imagined my first car would be a manual. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(I explain how that came about here.)<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"MNn5J2deVr\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/i-get-bmw320i-mt\/\">\u4eba\u751f\u521d\u306e\u611b\u8eca\u3092\u8cfc\u5165\uff01BMW 3\u30b7\u30ea\u30fc\u30ba\uff08MT\uff09\u306b\u51fa\u4f1a\u3044\u3001\u6ce8\u6587\u3059\u308b\u307e\u3067\u3002<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201c\u4eba\u751f\u521d\u306e\u611b\u8eca\u3092\u8cfc\u5165\uff01BMW 3\u30b7\u30ea\u30fc\u30ba\uff08MT\uff09\u306b\u51fa\u4f1a\u3044\u3001\u6ce8\u6587\u3059\u308b\u307e\u3067\u3002\u201d \u2014 \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30ba\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/i-get-bmw320i-mt\/embed\/#?secret=Oksq79gu3X#?secret=MNn5J2deVr\" data-secret=\"MNn5J2deVr\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While we waited for delivery, my husband kept saying:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Seriously, are you actually going to be able to drive it? You\u2019re not going to end up saying, \u201cLet\u2019s buy the Golf back,\u201d are you? lol<\/p>\n<p>I kept replying, as if trying to convince myself as much as him, \u201c<strong>No, I\u2019ll be fine this time. I\u2019ll definitely be fine this time. (-_-)<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The weekly forecast called for <strong>heavy rain<\/strong> on delivery day. \u201cOf course it would,\u201d I thought, and resigned myself to a washout. But the day before, the forecast suddenly changed to sunshine. Our recent driving trip to Fukui had also turned out sunny despite an ominous forecast, so perhaps I\u2019d finally graduated from being a rain magnet. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Though saying that will probably make it rain again.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The BMW sales representative was bringing the 320i to our house, where it would be swapped for our Golf. So that morning, <strong>I emptied everything out of the Golf, vacuumed it, and got it ready to go.<\/strong> Knowing this would be the last day to see it parked alongside our Panamera made me unexpectedly sentimental.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">From BMW Delivery to My First Drive<\/h3>\n<p>The car was due to arrive in the evening, so my husband wrapped up work early and came home. As the time approached, I grew more and more restless, waiting for the moment to arrive. Then the salesperson called to say they were outside. Our whole family stepped out\u2014and there it was\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2711-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Whoa\u2014it\u2019s finally here!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Even so, it didn\u2019t quite feel real. The salesperson walked us through the car\u2019s controls, and I was impressed by how easy iDrive was to use and how good the audio sounded. I also learned for the first time that you can switch between Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro driving modes. lol<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2686-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After checking over the Golf and confirming everything was in order, the salesperson said, \u201cWe look forward to helping you again,\u201d and drove off in it. Thank you, Golf. Goodbye\u2026 I\u2019d felt this before, but <strong>goodbyes can be surprisingly anticlimactic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2694-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once we\u2019d waved off the Golf, I said, \u201c<strong>Well, we might as well take it for a drive!<\/strong>\u201d and let my husband go first. The moment he started driving, he exclaimed:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">What is this? It\u2019s totally different from the Boxster! It\u2019s so easy! <strong>There\u2019s no way you could stall this thing!<\/strong> Even Mina can handle this one!<\/p>\n<p>He was laughing as he drove.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2701-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I see\u2026 It did look easy from the passenger seat, and the gear changes seemed smooth, with none of the jolts I\u2019d expected. Then I noticed the fuel gauge was a little low, so we headed out to the main road to fill up.<\/p>\n<p>And then it was finally time for me to take the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>I can do this. I can do this.<\/strong>\u201d I told myself as I adjusted the seat and steering wheel. I moved the gear lever through the gears\u2014\u201cone, two, three, four\u201d\u2014then thought, \u201cNo point overthinking it. Right, let\u2019s go!\u201d and gathered my courage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0051-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I managed to get moving, at least. But I had absolutely no spare attention for conversation. At one point, I said, \u201c<strong>I\u2019m trying to get into second, but it won\u2019t go in! (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">What are you doing? The gear lever is so light! You\u2019re gripping it way too tightly!<\/p>\n<p>Then I complained, \u201c<strong>I have no idea what gear I\u2019m in! There\u2019s no display telling me!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">What do you mean? You can usually tell by feel\u2014by the engine sound or whether the car seems to be struggling!<\/p>\n<p>Before long, my husband was laughing beside me:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Seriously, what\u2019s going on? You look completely rigid from over here. Like that comedian\u2019s catchphrase: \u201cstiff as a board!\u201d lol<\/p>\n<p>Oh, right\u2014the Japanese comedian Kato Zabungle and his \u201cI\u2019m stiff as a board!\u201d routine. (-_-) But at that moment, I really was stiff as a board, so I couldn\u2019t argue. I didn\u2019t even have the headspace to relax and reset. We kept going until we came to a stop at a traffic light on a gentle hill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here it was at last: a hill start.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I let the clutch bite, gave it a little extra gas, and cautiously pulled away. The car didn\u2019t roll backward, and I managed it. \u201c<strong>Yes! Nice!<\/strong>\u201d I thought, only to mess it up the next time\u2014and then keep repeating the cycle.<\/p>\n<p>I made it through the steep hill by the station without incident when the light turned green. By then, though, I was soaked in sweat from head to toe. (lol)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_0052-800x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"680\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maybe because I was getting tired, I stalled while pulling away from an ordinary traffic light. \u201c<strong>Oh no, oh no!<\/strong>\u201d I thought as I pressed the clutch, and then the engine restarted automatically.<\/p>\n<p>Whoa\u2014what a great feature\u2026 That was a relief. After a few stalls and plenty of stiff-as-a-board moments, I somehow made it home. Then my husband said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Let\u2019s check whether the auto hold really doesn\u2019t work on a hill. It\u2019ll be good to know before you start driving it tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>We switched drivers and tried it on the slope outside our house. The brakes held for about two seconds, then the car lurched backward. We tried a few times and got the same result. My husband then said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">I\u2019ve heard of \u201chill-start assist,\u201d which holds the brakes for about two seconds after you take your foot off the brake on an uphill slope. This BMW has it too! That\u2019s good news!<\/p>\n<p>So that was why I\u2019d managed to pull away without rolling backward earlier\u2026 It wasn\u2019t down to my driving skills after all. (-_-) With plenty of new-car nerves still on my mind, my first drive of the day came to an end.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11423\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/IMG_2704-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next day, I drove the BMW to drop off my older daughter at kindergarten. I was still tense and stalled several times, much to the frustration of the drivers behind me.<\/p>\n<p>But when I went back to pick her up that afternoon, <strong>I drove far more calmly than I had that morning.<\/strong> I guess it really does come down to practice. Maybe I\u2019ll get the hang of this after all.
