My husband is a car enthusiast by anyone\u2019s standards\u2014and his younger brother is just as passionate about cars.<\/p>\n

Their tastes are completely different, and they change cars at very different rates. Still, my husband has had the chance to drive his brother\u2019s Toyota Alphard<\/a>, Ferrari GTC4Lusso T<\/a>, Mercedes-AMG G 63<\/a>, Ferrari 488 Spider<\/a>, Porsche Macan Turbo<\/a>, and even a Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now his brother has added another car to the collection, and my husband got behind the wheel to write a test-drive report. We hope you enjoy it.<\/p>\n

The Abarth 595C<\/h3>\n

It looks like my brother-in-law has bought another car\u2014this time, an Abarth 595C. It\u2019s the limited-edition esseesse (Italian for \u201cSS,\u201d or \u201cSuper Sport\u201d).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Apparently, he was at the dealership to discuss buying a Ferrari when this car caught his eye. The deal was right, so he bought it.<\/p>\n

Honestly, the way he buys cars, you\u2019d think he was picking up a daikon radish at the grocery store.<\/p>\n

We often see Abarths on Royu Driveway, usually 595s, with the occasional 695 thrown in. It\u2019s a car that seems especially popular as a second car among supercar owners\u2014including Ferrari owners\u2014and Porsche owners.<\/p>\n

My wife has had a chance to test-drive an Abarth<\/a> before, but this was my first time driving one.<\/p>\n

\"Abarth<\/p>\n

This 595C is reportedly one of just 135 cars sold nationwide, finished in Grigio Campovolo.<\/strong> It\u2019s a gray that reminds me of Porsche Crayon with a hint of blue, and it looks terrific. Lately, it seems like more and more imported cars are being offered in shades of gray and matte finishes like this.<\/p>\n

The transmission is an automatic\u2014a five-speed sequential transmission, or in other words, a semi-automatic. It\u2019s built differently from a dual-clutch transmission such as Porsche\u2019s PDK: it\u2019s a relatively simple automatic that operates the clutch for you.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Abarth<\/p>\n

The \u201cC\u201d in the name means the roof opens.<\/strong> Unlike a conventional convertible, the C-pillars stay in place while the roof opens and slides back.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s fitted with an Akrapovi\u010d exhaust and KONI FSD shock absorbers. The 1.4-liter turbo engine has been tuned to produce 180 hp, giving the car a 0\u2013100 km\/h (0\u201362 mph) time of 6.7 seconds.<\/p>\n

Test-Driving the Abarth 595C<\/h3>\n

As soon as I got in, I was impressed by the quality of the driver\u2019s area and dashboard.<\/strong> The seats are generously padded and feel solid, with a supportive, sporty fit that\u2019s also comfortable. From the driver\u2019s seat, the cabin has the feel of a premium Italian sports car\u2014it\u2019s hard to believe this is a compact car.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the plastic door panels feel distinctly cheap, creating a striking contrast with the quality around the driver\u2019s seat and dashboard. That sharp difference in finish is one of the car\u2019s defining traits.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The engine sounds even better from outside the car than it does from the cabin. It\u2019s on the loud side, with a deep rumble that isn\u2019t overly bass-heavy.<\/strong> Rev it, and it responds with a rhythmic, throaty growl. There\u2019s a big difference between how the engine sounds inside and outside the car, and personally, I love the sound from outside.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d heard that the single-clutch semi-automatic could be jerky when pulling away, so I braced myself for a rough start\u2014but it moved off more smoothly than I expected.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But if you drive it like a modern automatic\u2014just holding the accelerator steady\u2014the shifts can be abrupt. Each time the gear changes, the power drops away and the occupants\u2019 heads rock back and forth.<\/p>\n

To be clear, it feels more like a novice shifting a manual car slowly and awkwardly than the harsh \u201cthunk\u201d you might get from an older car with overdue transmission-fluid changes.<\/p>\n

Once you get used to the shift points, though, you can make the changes smoother simply by easing off the accelerator just before the shift.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can also switch to manual mode and use the paddles to shift, which gives you more of a manual-car feel. That\u2019s fun in its own way.<\/p>\n

The shifts themselves aren\u2019t especially quick, so don\u2019t expect the feel of a dual-clutch transmission. This is a transmission that lets you change gears with the character of a manual car.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First, I drove from the city out toward the twisty roads. The suspension is, frankly, stiff.<\/strong> It\u2019s fitted with KONI shock absorbers, but even allowing for the fact that the car is new, I\u2019d like a little more compliance over bumps.<\/p>\n

That said, the seats are thickly padded, comfortable, and supportive, so they take the edge off the bumps. It\u2019s not uncomfortable to the point where you can\u2019t stand being in the car.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, the suspension travel is very short, so the car always feels a little bouncy.<\/strong> Our Nissan Note e-POWER NISMO S is fairly firm, too, but this is even stiffer.<\/p>\n

\"Abarth<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

At low speeds, the ride reminds me a little of the GT3. But as your speed increases, the GT3 is far more comfortable. If you\u2019re taking your wife or girlfriend along, be prepared: anyone who isn\u2019t used to a firm suspension might have a few complaints.<\/p>\n

Personally, I\u2019m not a fan of this level of stiffness. I\u2019d like to try a standard model without the KONI shocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring the Abarth 595C\u2019s Performance<\/h3>\n

I switched to Sport mode and took on some tight corners. The throttle response sharpened, and the car felt noticeably more powerful. It\u2019s rare for Sport mode to make such an obvious difference.<\/p>\n

Given the car\u2019s compact size and short wheelbase, I\u2019d expected it to be nimble and dart around like a go-kart. Surprisingly, though, its handling is tuned more for stability.<\/p>\n

Steering effort is on the heavier side, and even while cornering, there\u2019s a strong self-centering force that constantly wants to bring the wheel\u2014and the car\u2014back to straight ahead. That\u2019s the complete opposite of the McLaren 650S I used to own.<\/p>\n

So, it doesn\u2019t feel as quick or agile as its looks might suggest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the other hand, the tires have a reassuringly strong connection to the road, so you can push through corners with confidence.<\/strong> I tried switching TTC (Torque Transfer Control) off and on, but couldn\u2019t feel much difference while driving a little briskly on public roads.<\/p>\n

The 595C is much sportier than an ordinary compact car, but it\u2019s probably not as edgy or unpredictable as its looks might lead you to expect.<\/p>\n

Partway through the drive, I opened the roof. The sense of openness is fantastic.<\/strong> You can hear more of the engine from above, and since the Akrapovi\u010d exhaust sounds better from outside the car, it suits this open-top setup perfectly.<\/p>\n

The roof appears to open in two stages, but with it fully open, there\u2019s a fair amount of wind buffeting.<\/strong> For a more comfortable drive, it\u2019s probably best to stop at the intermediate position.<\/p>\n

From there, I continued along the winding roads and headed onto the expressway. The wheelbase is just 2,300 mm. By comparison, the Honda N-WGN has a 2,520 mm wheelbase, so the Abarth\u2019s is shorter than that of a Japanese kei car.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d heard that Abarths were stable at highway speeds, but to be honest, I wasn\u2019t entirely convinced.<\/p>\n

Then I drove it on the expressway, and it was a real eye-opener.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Its straight-line stability is remarkable for such a short-wheelbase car. Even at the kind of speeds you\u2019d use to keep pace in the passing lane, it never feels nervous. It tracks arrow-straight. This isn\u2019t quite the same kind of stability you get from a long-wheelbase car, where the length helps it hold its line. Instead, it feels as though the suspension setup is what keeps the car tracking straight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier, I mentioned how strongly the steering self-centers on winding roads and urges the car to go straight. That same setup really comes into its own on the expressway. You can clearly feel through the steering wheel how the front tires want to track straight ahead.<\/p>\n

On a gentle curve, if you make only a slight steering input, you have to consciously hold that steering angle; otherwise, the car seems to want to straighten out.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s just how strong its straight-line stability<\/strong> is.<\/p>\n

Even when cruising at a brisk pace, the Abarth never seems to struggle. For such a small car, it cruises effortlessly at highway speeds and keeps up with the traffic ahead.<\/strong> It may be about the size of a kei car, but its stability is in a completely different league.<\/p>\n

It may sound like an exaggeration, but the difference feels as big as that between a car and a bicycle.<\/p>\n

I have to admire the engineering that gives a car with such an incredibly short wheelbase this kind of straight-line stability. It\u2019s a car bred for the autostrada, after all.<\/p>\n

I must have driven for about an hour and a half. At first, the ride felt stiff, but before I knew it, that stiffness had turned into a satisfying part of the experience. The Abarth left me feeling like I\u2019d really driven\u2014\u201cAh, that was a proper drive.<\/strong>\u201d By the end, I even felt refreshed.<\/p>\n
