Porsche Track Experience<\/h3>\n

In a recent article, I wrote about attending the “Porsche Sports Car Together Day 2019” held at Fuji Speedway on June 15th (Sat) and 16th (Sun). On the morning of the 15th, I also took part in the “Porsche Track Experience<\/strong><\/a>.”<\/p>\n

The Porsche Track Experience is a Safety & Sports Driving Program<\/strong> designed for Porsche owners. It\u2019s held annually as a training opportunity to hone driving skills that allow you to skillfully control your Porsche and to deepen your understanding of the car.<\/p>\n

There are several programs available at the Porsche Track Experience tailored to different skill levels, but I chose to participate in the most basic program focused on learning the fundamentals of sports driving, “Warm Up Light\uff0b,” driving my Panamera Turbo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

My husband, who has taken the program multiple times over the years, had been urging me:<\/p>\n

Mina, you absolutely should go! You really must!<\/p>\n

But attending meant arranging childcare, arriving at Fuji Speedway the day before, and committing to a 3-day, 2-night trip. Although interested, I hadn\u2019t been motivated enough to go\u2014until this event coincided with the program, so I decided to give it a try.<\/p>\n

The “Warm Up Light\uff0b” I took is a special half-day condensed version of the regular “Warm Up” program. The curriculum includes Basic Sports Driving Lecture<\/strong>, Wet Constant Radius Circle<\/strong>, ABS Braking<\/strong>, and a Parade Lap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This Porsche Track Experience is so popular it fills up quickly, often with a waiting list. I applied online right at the reservation opening on April 25th at noon and was fortunate to secure a spot.<\/p>\n

The pre-event materials included notes such as:<\/p>\n

\u30fbAll vehicle parts must be genuine
\n\u30fbTires must be Porsche-approved with N-code
\n\u30fbTires must have sufficient tread, no damage or embedded foreign objects, and brake pads must have adequate thickness (maintenance check recommended at Porsche dealer, equivalent to a 6-month inspection)<\/span>
\n\u30fbDriving gloves must be worn on the day<\/p>\n

This clearly means the curriculum pushes the vehicles to their limits.<\/p>\n

Our Panamera had a tire puncture about a month before the event, which was repaired at the dealer along with an oil top-up and tread check, so we confirmed all vehicle checks ourselves before attending.<\/p>\n

The Day of Warm Up Light\uff0b<\/h3>\n

On June 15th, the weather was unfortunately heavy rain\u2026 well, I had expected rain from the start anyway! Although the event was scheduled rain or shine, I wondered if it could really go ahead in such conditions as I headed to the venue early in the morning.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

After arriving, I first went to reception. Handing over the waiver<\/strong> and maintenance check sheet<\/strong>, I received my race number and took my assigned seat. My husband and daughters, as accompanying guests (spectators), waited at tables set up behind us.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Once seated, a voice came from the person next to me:<\/p>\n

“Are you Mina-san, by any chance?”<\/p>\n

I replied, “Yes!<\/strong>” and we greeted each other. It turned out this person was a Twitter follower I regularly interact with!<\/p>\n

What a coincidence to be sitting next to each other! We chatted with my husband as well, and I was grateful to hear that they purchased a Porsche thanks to this blog and were participating with their Macan S this time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That made me really happy.<\/p>\n

Before long, the program started with instructor introductions. The instructors included race drivers with experience and victories in world races and Le Mans<\/strong>, as well as former racers from the Porsche Carrera Cup Japan (PCCJ), making for a very impressive lineup.<\/p>\n

Next, Chief Instructor Tetsuya Tanaka began the Basic Sports Driving Lecture<\/strong>. He said, “It\u2019s pouring rain today, but this is a rare chance to experience full braking in a Porsche in heavy rain, so you\u2019re all lucky!<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Indeed, when he put it that way, it made sense. Maybe being a rain woman wasn\u2019t so bad after all!<\/p>\n

Then came an explanation of the driving position. The correct driving position was much closer than I had thought: hold the steering wheel at the 9 and 3 o\u2019clock positions, with elbows and knees bent at 90 degrees<\/strong>. Otherwise, during sharp turns, your arms might extend too far, making it harder to control the car.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Next was an explanation about ABS. When Tanaka asked, “Does anyone here know what ABS is?<\/strong>” one participant gave a perfect answer. Amazing\u2026<\/p>\n

ABS stands for Anti-lock Braking System<\/strong>. It prevents the tires from locking during emergency braking, allowing you to steer. Without ABS, if the tires lock, steering won\u2019t respond and the car will continue straight, which can cause serious accidents.<\/p>\n

With ABS, since the tires don\u2019t lock, you can still steer and avoid danger even while braking hard.<\/strong> I\u2019d heard of ABS many times but never really understood it\u2014this was a good lesson.<\/p>\n

Afterward, we took a commemorative photo indoors due to the rain, then moved to the cars. The moment had arrived!<\/p>\n

Constant Radius Circle<\/h3>\n

My husband and daughters got into the car, placed the radios in the door pockets, attached the race numbers inside, lined up, and waited for instructions.<\/p>\n

Then the instructor\u2019s voice came over the radio:<\/p>\n

“Now we\u2019ll check the radios. I\u2019ll call each car one by one. Can you hear me? Can you hear me?”<\/p>\n

Hearing this repeated, I thought, “Wait, do I have to respond?<\/strong>” and shouted loudly,
\n“Yes! I can hear you! (\uffe3\u30fc\uffe3)!”<\/span>
\nMy husband burst out laughing:<\/p>\n

“No, no, remember the explanation said they can\u2019t hear us from here?”<\/p>\n

Oh right\u2026 I hadn\u2019t been paying attention at all.<\/p>\n

We split into two groups and moved to our respective points. Our group started with the Wet Constant Radius Circle<\/strong>. Normally water is sprayed for this, but with the heavy rain, that wasn\u2019t necessary!<\/p>\n

In the full-day curriculum, you experience how the car behaves with PSM (Porsche Stability Management) ON versus OFF while doing the circle. But in this Warm Up Light\uff0b<\/strong>, we went straight into the circle with PSM OFF<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We were instructed to hold the PSM switch down to turn it off<\/strong>, set the car to Sport Plus mode, shift to manual, and stay in 1st gear while turning (other blogs showed many using 2nd gear, but we did 1st)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Starting the turn, the grip was good at first, but as I pressed the accelerator to increase speed, the car began to understeer<\/strong>, and when I eased off the accelerator, the car spun.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t imagine this just from the explanation, but luckily I was last in line, so I learned a lot by watching others and listening to the instructor\u2019s advice.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Finally, it was my turn. Just before, Chief Tanaka advised, “For the Panamera, you might need 2nd gear instead of 1st, but let\u2019s start with 1st. Also, since the Panamera Turbo is AWD, it might be harder to spin.<\/strong>” So I gave 1st gear a try.<\/p>\n

“You can turn either right or left, whichever you prefer. Now start turning and adjust your steering angle. Once you find the right angle, gradually press the accelerator to increase speed.”<\/p>\n

I followed the instructions.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

“Now, speed up more, more!”<\/p>\n

I pressed the accelerator pedal harder.<\/p>\n

“Still gripping well, keep going, speed up more!”<\/p>\n

I was doing as told, but the accelerator was already floored<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“More, more accelerator!”<\/p>\n

Inside the car I said, “Instructor! I\u2019m already floored, I can\u2019t press any harder! (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!<\/strong>” but of course no one heard me. The first run ended like that.<\/p>\n

I opened the window and said, “Sorry, I was in 1st gear but already floored it, so I couldn\u2019t go any faster\u2026” The reply was, “Okay, no problem, let\u2019s try 2nd gear next!<\/strong>” So we shifted to 2nd, set the steering angle, and slowly pressed the accelerator to speed up.<\/p>\n

“Still gripping well, speed up more.”<\/p>\n

The centrifugal force was intense and speeding up more was scary, but trusting the Panamera, I bravely increased speed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

“Good, grip is fading, understeer appearing, good, good.”<\/p>\n

At that point, I had no idea what was happening or how I was driving\u2014it felt like being on a high-speed merry-go-round thrill ride. Then the instructor said,<\/p>\n

“Now ease off the accelerator somewhere!”<\/p>\n

I did, and the Panamera spun around with a loud roar and stopped.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2026That was scary\u2026<\/p>\n

“Wow, you spun the Panamera! Nice job! Now please return to the original line and wait.”<\/p>\n

I was left stunned and shaken for a while before moving the car (laughs). Apparently, if you turn the steering wheel while easing off, the spin won\u2019t happen properly.<\/p>\n

By the way, here\u2019s a GIF illustrating it (made by my husband)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

On the next turn, everyone seemed to have overcome their fear and gotten the hang of it\u2014their improvement was remarkable. Then it was my turn again. Having grasped the basics from the first run, I accelerated in 2nd gear and eased off to spin again, but\u2026<\/p>\n

“That spin was due to too much power, which isn\u2019t the point of this curriculum. Let\u2019s try again, gradually pressing the accelerator. Sudden acceleration causes spins.”<\/p>\n

I understood and followed the instructions, managing to do it well. The constant radius circle curriculum ended successfully.<\/p>\n

I had been clenching my teeth so hard my jaw was very tired. But I also realized how incredible the Panamera Turbo\u2019s performance is\u2014it doesn\u2019t spin easily unless pushed this far.<\/strong> It\u2019s rare to be driving floored in 2nd gear in heavy rain like that\u2026 What an amazing experience.<\/p>\n

Next page \u2192 Experience full acceleration and full braking in the Panamera Turbo! Circuit driving too!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Emergency Braking<\/h3>\n

Next, we moved to a different location for ABS braking practice. The curriculum involved accelerating to 80 km\/h and then braking fully, avoiding poles placed on either side. I was advised beforehand to press the brake firmly and not release it midway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

During this practice, instructors gave advice over the radio and also personally to each participant through the window before starting, which was very helpful.<\/p>\n

We first practiced at 50 km\/h<\/strong>. Although slow, I was nervous and braked well before the brake point. After two tries at 50 km\/h, Chief Tanaka advised:<\/p>\n

“Focus on braking at the brake point. Also, press the brake pedal more firmly at the start.”<\/p>\n

Then it was time to accelerate to 80 km\/h and brake fully in the Panamera Turbo in Sport Plus mode!<\/p>\n

This time, I managed it well.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The other participants were very skilled, and the instructor commented:<\/p>\n

“Whether it\u2019s your driving skills or Porsche\u2019s performance, I don\u2019t know, but everyone handled 80 km\/h easily<\/strong>. Let\u2019s try increasing speed to about 83 km\/h and brake a bit later.”<\/p>\n

Raising the speed to 83 km\/h was harder than I thought ( -_- ).<\/p>\n

When I pressed the accelerator harder than ever, the acceleration was unlike anything I\u2019d felt before, pressing me into the seat with the roaring 4LV8 turbo engine, and I even felt the car lift slightly during the shift-up.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

S-So scary\u2026 (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!<\/span><\/p>\n

I thought, “I don\u2019t know the speed, but brake now!<\/strong>” and stomped on the brake, but fear made me brake too early. The instructor said,<\/p>\n

“Good job increasing speed, but you braked too early. Try braking later next time!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

By then, my hands were sweaty, my jaw tired from clenching, and my spirit worn down. But focusing on the advice, I braked fully at a later point and barely avoided the poles.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Nice! Great challenge! That was really close!”<\/p>\n

I learned that the hazard lights automatically flash during emergency braking.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Later, checking the meter showed I experienced “1G” during this exercise. My husband said, “It\u2019s amazing to experience this much G in heavy rain. The braking G is about the same as a Boxster GTS on a sunny day, and the acceleration G is even stronger in the Panamera.<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I was so scared I just wanted it to be over quickly ( -_- ), but I repeated the runs about 10 times. Each time, the instructors encouraged me:<\/p>\n

“That was good! You can go further! Keep the speed, but brake later!<\/strong> Try to brake at the point where you feel ‘scared!'”<\/p>\n

“Nice challenge! Next, turn the steering wheel a bit earlier to avoid the poles properly!”<\/p>\n

I tackled each challenge, but by the end, I was mentally and physically exhausted. Then came the announcement:<\/p>\n

“Okay! Whether you laugh or cry, only two runs left!”<\/p>\n

Thank goodness\u2026 only two more.<\/p>\n

Since it was the last, I pushed myself to increase speed, brake later, and turn earlier, but ended up hitting or clipping the poles repeatedly!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

By the end of the curriculum, I was completely drained but also exhilarated. I told my husband, who had returned to the car,<\/p>\n

“I got goosebumps! It was really amazing! Incredible!”<\/p>\n

I kept repeating how amazing it was as the final parade lap time arrived. However, the rain had worsened, and an announcement said the PCCJ qualifying race was canceled.<\/p>\n

I wondered if the parade lap would still happen. After about 30 minutes, it was announced that “the race is canceled, but a slower parade lap will proceed<\/strong>,” so we finally entered the circuit.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

My husband, who has raced countless laps at Fuji Speedway in car games, sat in the passenger seat and said things like:<\/p>\n

“Normally you\u2019d brake hard here and aim for that orange spot! This corner follows the grass, then you try to go straight to the next corner…”<\/p>\n

So I ended up cornering a bit off the line (laughs), but compared to my first time at Fuji Speedway last year, I was much calmer. Maybe that\u2019s the effect of the Porsche Track Experience!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

After three laps, I looked back to find my kids fast asleep (lol), hurriedly prepared the Ergo carrier, picked up my youngest daughter, and headed to the ceremony venue.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Porsche is Amazing!<\/h3>\n

While filling out the survey at the ceremony, I chatted with the Twitter follower I met earlier about how “tiring but fun it was<\/strong>.” Then the instructor asked everyone, “Did you have fun today!?<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Almost everyone raised their hand saying “Yes, it was fun!<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

And it wasn\u2019t just polite words\u2014it really was fun, and though scary, the enjoyment far outweighed the fear. It\u2019s rare for adults to get this excited and thrilled in everyday life.<\/p>\n

During the ceremony, it was announced that “three participants will receive awards for outstanding effort<\/strong>.” I was spacing out when my name was called for the “Mobil 1 Award,” which surprised me greatly. Chief Instructor Tanaka said,<\/p>\n

“Nice spin in the Panamera! Also, you\u2019re the first person we\u2019ve seen holding a child while standing here (laughs).”<\/p>\n

I was happy to hear “nice challenge!” even though it was terrifying!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

An 83-year-old participant was also awarded, proving that “even at 83, you can master a Porsche and sharpen your skills at the Porsche Track Experience<\/strong>.” That\u2019s truly inspiring, and I hope to age like that.<\/p>\n

Taking the “Warm Up Light\uff0b” program was both fun and educational. The fact that such a challenging curriculum is designed for amateurs shows Porsche\u2019s confidence in their cars\u2019 high performance and safety in all conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I also realized that until now, I had no idea of the true power of a Porsche.<\/strong> Even accelerating full throttle and braking hard in heavy rain, the car stopped firmly and could steer to avoid poles. Porsche really is amazing.<\/p>\n

The limits of a Porsche are far beyond what I imagined.<\/p>\n

At the same time, this was the first time I felt truly scared driving a car.<\/strong> During the constant radius circle, I even thought, “This must be what it feels like just before a fatal accident\u2026<\/strong>” and the G-forces during full braking still give me goosebumps.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why I\u2019m more determined than ever to drive safely every day.<\/p>\n

That evening, driving back from Fuji Speedway to the hotel, I felt like I had improved my driving skills a bit<\/strong> (laughs). My driving position was completely different, and even the mountain roads around Lake Yamanaka felt easier to drive. I finally felt one with my Panamera.<\/p>\n

Some participants of the Porsche Track Experience “Warm Up” program eventually progress to racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup Japan (PCCJ). That\u2019s definitely not for me (full braking on a circuit is way too scary)<\/span>, but I\u2019d love to try the next level program if I get the chance.<\/p>\n
