Here’s our report.

Ride Comfort and Driving Feel of Winter Tires

Our Cayenne’s summer tires are mounted on 20-inch wheels, but the winter tires are on 19-inch wheels.
The tires are Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 SUV.

Perhaps because of the 19-inch wheels, the initial acceleration feels very light. Even with summer tires, the Cayenne feels nimble without the weight of the motor and battery being noticeable, but with winter tires, it feels like riding a much smaller, lighter car.

At the same time, the ride is smooth and very comfortable. I expected studless tires to feel rough and bumpy, but winter tires that handle dry and wet conditions really are different.

I felt the ride comfort was no different from summer tires.

My husband said,

The ride definitely changes when the tire size is different. When riding with the family, I don’t notice it much, but driving alone, it feels almost like driving a Macan—very sporty.
The smoothness remains, but it feels lighter.
In the city, the feeling is basically the same as summer tires. When I used to drive an Audi A3 and switched to studless tires, they made a loud noise and the ride got mushy and uncomfortable, but winter tires don’t do that at all.
They have good stiffness, and even when pushing the curves on the Royu Driveway a bit, they don’t give in at all. This feeling is very refreshing for Japanese users used to studless tires. In fact, on winter roads close to 0°C, they grip better than summer tires, so I feel very confident on winter winding roads.

Personally, I’m still not used to the usual grinding noise when turning the wheel slowly on cold winter mornings, so I was most impressed that the grinding noise disappeared the moment we switched to winter tires (laughs).

Summer tires really do get very hard in low temperatures. No wonder cold summer tires are dangerous.

Driving on the Highway with Winter Tires

Next, when driving on the highway, I felt that road noise was slightly louder compared to when using summer tires.
Our Cayenne is usually very quiet on the highway, with no noticeable road or wind noise, so this was a bit more noticeable.

However, it was not unpleasant, and there was no need to raise our voices to have a conversation—it was comfortably “quiet enough.” At lower speeds in the driving lane, it was almost unnoticeable, but when joining the faster flow in the passing lane, road noise was about 10% louder than with summer tires.

Regarding handling, the difference from summer tires was honestly hard to tell. Lane changes and cornering felt just as smooth as usual. Even when changing lanes mid-corner as a test, there was no mushy feeling, and the car responded exactly as expected.

My husband said about highway driving,

I think European winter tires are really capable tires. They’re worlds apart from studless tires. Probably, if you didn’t know, few would realize these are winter tires.
High-speed stability is outstanding. Straight-line stability is unchanged, and even on tighter high-speed corners, there’s no feeling of the car losing composure. Well, it makes sense—without tires this solid, you couldn’t drive on the winter Autobahn.
The main difference from summer tires is probably just that road noise is a bit louder at very high speeds.

Next page → Heading further north in the Cayenne in search of snow!

Heading North in the Cayenne, but No Snow…

On this day, we headed north in search of snow, but contrary to the forecast, it was warm with high temperatures, and there was no snow at all even in places where it usually accumulates.

I’m a super rain and storm magnet, so when I want sunshine, it snows, but when I want snow, it’s sunny instead… (laughs)

We kept driving, and suddenly snow appeared around the mountains of Haga in Hyogo Prefecture.

However, the temperature was around 2-3°C and not very cold, and the snow on the road had already been cleared, so we ended up just driving on wet roads… (-_-)

Still, while studless tires might have been scary on wet roads, winter tires handled it perfectly fine.

There was a short hill with about 20-30 meters of snow left (I wonder why only that part remained), so we deliberately drove back and forth a few times. Driving slowly was no problem, but when braking hard, the car slipped slightly and the ABS activated.

My husband said,

I don’t think this surface was icy, just snowy. The longitudinal traction here was completely fine. The Cayenne’s four-wheel drive helps, but even on steep hills it climbed without slipping. Its ability to push through snow is quite high.
On descents, the Cayenne’s heavy weight probably helps, but when braking firmly, the ABS kicks in. Of course, with normal braking pressure, there’s no problem.

After that, we went all the way to Togura Pass on the Tottori Prefecture border, where there was a lot of snow piled beside the road, but the road itself had been cleared, so we couldn’t really test the winter tires’ full performance.

However, since a lot of melting water was spread on the road, it was a great opportunity to check grip and drainage on cold wet surfaces. In Kansai and other areas, this kind of situation is more common than full ice.

The drainage, grip, and braking felt no different from summer tires. Even though there was a lot of water on the road, drainage was ample, which is a big difference from studless tires.

That said, the kids were thrilled to see so much snow for the first time and played in it for a long time despite the cold. The snow wasn’t very deep, but the road surface was packed down and the base was somewhat icy.
My husband said,

I just drove normally, and there was absolutely no feeling of slipping. If you really stomp the accelerator, the wheels spin and traction control kicks in, but with gentle acceleration like when starting from a stoplight, nothing happens.
I think the tire provides very strong longitudinal traction.

Since it was the Royu Driveway, he also took the curves without holding back, and said there was almost no understeer or oversteer sensation.

If you ask if it’s zero, there might be a little slip, but as a driver, it never felt like “slipping.” Even at a somewhat high pace on the snowy Royu curves, the grip was solid and driving was trouble-free. I think the tires are also very strong laterally.

Then, deliberately choosing icy patches, he tested further and found that compared to Japanese studless tires, the ABS intervention during braking was somewhat earlier, and traction on ice seemed lower.

He described the feeling as not quite half the performance, but about 20-30% lower.

However, he said the impression of slipping during acceleration or cornering was not very different from Japanese studless tires.

When braking downhill with normal pressure, the car stops firmly, so there’s no particular concern. But if you brake a bit harder, the car sways slightly left and right, but I guess that’s normal for any tire on snow.

When braking hard enough to trigger ABS strongly, vibrations occurred and the stopping distance seemed longer.

In Conclusion

After driving the Cayenne with winter tires on snowy roads, my husband said this:

Overall, I think winter tires are not recommended for extremely icy mirror-like surfaces like in Hokkaido for safety reasons, but for people living in Kansai or urban areas who drive to nearby ski resorts, they are more than sufficient.

Especially on snowy roads, their performance is outstanding, and above all, their stability on highways, straight-line stability, and cornering on winding roads are at a level that will definitely satisfy.

For those who mostly drive on cleared roads, dry roads, or wet roads with rain or sleet in winter, and only occasionally on snow, I strongly recommend winter tires.

Cayenne Equipped with Winter Tires The other day, our Cayenne E-Hybrid was switched to winter tires.
