{"id":37496,"date":"2021-02-08T06:00:44","date_gmt":"2021-02-07T21:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37496"},"modified":"2021-06-01T23:40:25","modified_gmt":"2021-06-01T14:40:25","slug":"carrera-or-carreras-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/carrera-or-carreras-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Carrera or Carrera S: Which Porsche 911 Should You Buy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">Porsche 911 Carrera or Carrera S<\/h3>\n<p>Today, I want to share a question we received on the blog earlier, along with my husband\u2019s response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">Currently planning to purchase a 992, but <strong>I&#8217;m torn between the Carrera and the Carrera S.<\/strong> I&#8217;m switching from a Macan GTS and don\u2019t own any other Porsche models.<br \/>\nThe blog highly praises the base Carrera, but could you explain a bit more about the differences between the Carrera and Carrera S?<\/p>\n<p>That was the question.<\/p>\n<p>It seems this person had already used the configurator and gotten a quote, and <strong>including options, the base Carrera comes to about 18 million yen, while the Carrera S jumps to around 20.5 million yen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Because of budget concerns, they reached out to the blog for advice from my husband, who has experience with various Porsche models.<\/p>\n<p>Still, 911s are really expensive\u2026! My husband\u2019s first Porsche, a 981 Boxster GTS, cost just under 10 million yen new with options, so when I first heard this,  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cWait, 10 million yen for a car!? Why!? That\u2019s way too expensive!! You could do so many other things with that money!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought. But now, I find myself thinking, \u201c<strong>Compared to the 911, the Boxster GTS is actually quite a bargain.<\/strong>\u201d My sense of car prices has completely warped\u2026<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Is the base 911 more than enough for Japanese roads?<\/h3>\n<p>Regarding the initial question of \u201c<strong>Carrera or Carrera S?<\/strong>\u201d I asked my husband and here is the reply I shared.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">My husband recommends the base 911<\/h4>\n<p>When it comes to low-end torque and ease of handling in city driving, the base Carrera is easier to manage. Compared to the Carrera S, you might feel a slight hesitation in torque pickup in town with the S.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The ride quality is smoother and better in the S compared to the base model.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many Porsche owners we know say similar things, so I don\u2019t think this is far off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As for speed, the base model is more than enough on Japanese roads.<\/strong> Acceleration merging onto highways right after toll booths is impressively quick. Regarding high-rev power, <strong>you\u2019d have to compare acceleration above around 180 km\/h to really notice the difference between the base and S.<\/strong> Even though the S has more power, there are almost no opportunities to fully utilize it on public roads in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Also, when my husband drove a base 992 Cabriolet at Fuji Speedway last year, it was more than fast enough, and the straight-line acceleration was incredible. The engine\u2019s response is so strong it hardly feels like a turbo engine. <strong>In Sport Plus mode, if you really floor the accelerator, it bursts past the 7,400 rpm redline and aims for 8,000 rpm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_1604.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (992)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also driven the 992 Carrera 4S on the track, and while <strong>it\u2019s definitely faster, the difference wasn\u2019t overwhelmingly large<\/strong>. To be honest, from my perspective, the roughly 3 million yen price difference didn\u2019t feel justified.<\/p>\n<p>After driving various roads in the base 992, he feels that \u201c<strong>for driving in Japan, the base model is more than satisfying.<\/strong>\u201d So if you\u2019re torn between the Carrera and Carrera S, it might be better to think of it this way: <strong>\u201cChoose the S if you prioritize ride comfort, or the base if you want easier handling in town.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you still want to emphasize power, speed, and the hierarchy, <strong>waiting for the GTS model to come out is also an option.<\/strong> Historically, GTS models tend to hold their value better.<\/p>\n<p>That was his take.<\/p>\n<p>The person who asked this question said they had already booked a test drive for the base 911 at their dealer, so I\u2019d love to hear how they felt afterward.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/carrera-or-carreras-2021\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 The appeal of the base model after experiencing the Turbo<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">After experiencing Porsche\u2019s Turbo models<\/h3>\n<p>We used to own a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/category\/aboutpanamera\/panameraturbo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Panamera Turbo (971)<\/a>. When buying it, my husband agonized over the grade until the very end, but  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201c<strong>I don\u2019t want to say you don\u2019t need Turbo-level power without having experienced a Turbo.<\/strong> I want to feel it for myself. So I\u2019m going all out and buying the Turbo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what he said, and he bought the Panamera Turbo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21691\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_8441-700x480-1.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche Panamera Turbo\" width=\"700\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After experiencing the Turbo, his impression, which I\u2019ve written about many times on this blog, is:  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">The Turbo is truly amazing. It can cruise luxuriously, but <strong>when you really push it or drive in Sport Plus mode, its transformation is almost scary.<\/strong><br \/>\nBeing able to enjoy both in one car is very appealing, but in conclusion, I still don\u2019t think I need Turbo-level power. If we buy another Panamera, I\u2019d probably go for a hybrid rather than a Turbo.<br \/>\nAs for other Porsche models, I definitely admire the 911 Turbo S, and I\u2019m always imagining \u201c<strong>what specs I\u2019d choose if I bought a Turbo S<\/strong>\u201d while playing with the configurator (laughs). Someday I want one, but I might end up not fully utilizing it.<br \/>\nThinking about that, I feel the base model suits me best right now.<\/p>\n<p>That makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>After all, our family isn\u2019t the type to race full throttle around the N\u00fcrburgring daily or to drive 200 km\/h on the Autobahn just to get somewhere faster (lol).<\/p>\n<p>Also, with the 992 911, just a slight press on the accelerator on the highway results in incredible acceleration, so I think, \u201c<strong>If the base is already like this, I\u2019d be too scared to fully press the accelerator in a Turbo.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Porsche models feel like completely different cars depending on the grade, even within the same model, so it\u2019s best to test drive thoroughly at the dealer or shop until you\u2019re satisfied before buying.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(Though you rarely get to fully press the accelerator during dealer test drives, it\u2019s a big purchase after all.)<\/span> That\u2019s what I think again.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Porsche 911 Carrera or Carrera S Today, I want to share a question we received on the blog earlier, along with my husband\u2019s response.
