\nA fourth-year university student based in Kobe, Yuki has loved cars since childhood. By the time he was in his third year of junior high school, he was photographing the sports cars and supercars he spotted around town. His striking photos bring out the best in every car and have attracted attention\u2014and commissions from owners not only in Kansai but also in Tokyo.
\nNow a popular automotive photographer, he is increasingly in demand from companies as well as private owners. His Instagram following has surpassed 7,500.

1) Photographing the Cars He Loves<\/h3>\n

A Glimpse into Yuki Rikui\u2019s Everyday Life<\/h4>\n

What does a typical day look like for you?<\/h5>\n

On weekdays, I lead a pretty ordinary student life: going to classes and working part-time. Of course, if a photography request comes in, I\u2019ll rearrange my plans and head out to shoot\u2014even on a weekday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On weekends, I sometimes photograph cars in front of Kobe Daimaru. And most Sunday mornings, I head to the Royu Driveway<\/strong> to take pictures of cars belonging to owners I know, as well as those driven by visitors at the lookout.<\/p>\n

These days I get more commissioned work, but it all started with what you might call car spotting: I\u2019d find a car around town, ask its owner, \u201cWould it be all right if I took some photos?\u201d and then take pictures<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Every car has a different design. Isn\u2019t it difficult to photograph each one beautifully?<\/h5>\n

Yes\u2026 The same car can have a completely different feel depending on how you photograph it. My approach is usually to take pictures from a range of angles and choose the best ones later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s a rare car I don\u2019t often get to see, I\u2019ll take a lot of pictures. Otherwise, I usually take around 10.<\/p>\n

How much time do you spend editing your photos?<\/h5>\n

Some photos take just five minutes to edit, while others somehow end up taking about an hour. I work intuitively, so once I start second-guessing myself, the results usually aren\u2019t as good. I just get more and more bogged down\u2026<\/p>\n

So when it comes to editing, I focus on trusting my instincts rather than spending a certain amount of time on it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why did you choose the name \u201cKUGATTI\u201d?<\/h5>\n

When I was in junior high school, people at my cram school called me \u201cKugacchi.\u201d<\/strong> Written in Roman letters, it also looked a bit like \u201cBUGATTI<\/strong>,\u201d so I thought, why not make it sound like a carmaker? (laughs)<\/p>\n

My memory\u2019s a little hazy, but before KUGATTI, I think I used names like \u201cKUGANI.\u201d Then it became \u201cY.KUGATTI,\u201d and eventually I simplified it to \u201cKUGATTI<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for my Twitter and Instagram handle, \u201cV12_SCL,\u201d the V12 part is because I liked V12-powered cars<\/strong>. My original Twitter handle was @SuperCarsLOVE<\/strong>, so I took the first letters of those words to make \u201cSCL.\u201d<\/p>\n

I also liked the way \u201cV12_SCL\u201d looked because I\u2019d seen similar combinations on British license plates. (laughs)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

You live in Kobe but even travel to Tokyo for photo shoots?<\/h5>\n

That\u2019s right. An owner I knew once asked me, \u201cCould you come to Tokyo tonight to photograph my car?\u201d<\/strong> I took the night off from my part-time job and went.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I always try to seize an opportunity as soon as it comes along<\/strong>, so I replied \u201cI\u2019m on my way!\u201d without hesitating.<\/p>\n

If I\u2019d paused and the opportunity had slipped away, I know I\u2019d have regretted it. So I live by the rule that cars come first, no matter what<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I really, really love cars. (laughs)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s amazing that you\u2019ve built lasting relationships with the owners you meet.<\/h5>\n

I\u2019m really grateful for that. I get to photograph the cars I love, edit the pictures the way I envision them, ask for the owner\u2019s contact information so I can send them the photos, and then post them on Instagram\u2026<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not doing anything particularly special, but it makes me so happy when people enjoy the results. One owner I\u2019ve gotten to know told me:<\/p>\n

\u201cKugacchi\u2019s photos have real value. I think he\u2019s one of the few people in Japan who can take pictures that make a car truly shine.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was really happy to hear that. At the same time, it made me think, \u201cI can\u2019t be satisfied with this\u2014I have to keep working even harder!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

What Goes into Photographing Cars<\/h4>\n
What do you think makes your photos so special?<\/h5>\n

Honestly, I\u2019m not sure\u2014I just take pictures because I love it. (laughs) But I love cars from the bottom of my heart, and I have so much fun photographing them<\/strong>. I think that passion comes through in my pictures.<\/p>\n

I started taking car photos when I was in my third year of junior high school, but I certainly wasn\u2019t good from the start. At first, I was simply recording cool cars<\/strong>, so I just took pictures with my phone.<\/p>\n

Eventually, though, I started thinking, \u201cIf I\u2019m going to take a picture, I want to make sure the car looks great.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve bought two compact digital cameras over the years and shot with each until it wore out. After that, I borrowed a DSLR from a friend. Once I\u2019d gotten used to using it, I took the plunge and bought one for myself. A year and a half later, I bought a new DSLR, which is the one I use now.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve taken too many photos to count. At car events, I sometimes take 1,000 to 2,000 pictures in a single day<\/strong>, so I\u2019ve probably shot hundreds of thousands\u2014or even millions\u2014by now. Who knows? It\u2019s a lot. (laughs)<\/p>\n

After seven years and a huge number of shots, I may have gradually figured out how to make cars look their best. (\u2193 Here\u2019s how much the quality of Yuki\u2019s photos has improved over the years.)<\/span><\/p>\n

What drives you to take so many car photos?<\/h5>\n

I just love cars\u2014that\u2019s really all there is to it. (laughs) But more than wanting to take a great photo, I think what really drives me is wanting to see great cars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When I\u2019m standing in front of a beautiful car thinking, \u201cWow, that\u2019s so cool!\u201d<\/strong> it\u2019s such a joy to capture it in a photo that shows just how good it looks.<\/p>\n

Which do you enjoy more: taking photos or driving?<\/h5>\n

Hmm\u2026 that\u2019s a tough one. They\u2019re completely different things, so I can\u2019t really compare them. But one day, I\u2019d love to be able to do everything myself:<\/p>\n

\u201cBuy a car I love, drive it to one of my favorite photo spots, and take as many pictures of my own car as I like.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s my dream. (laughs)<\/p>\n

2) The Road to Becoming a Car Photographer<\/h3>\n

A Lifelong Love of Cars<\/h4>\n

Did you grow up loving cars because someone in your family was into them?<\/h5>\n

No\u2014nobody in my family is a car enthusiast<\/strong>. (laughs) I think most boys are interested in cars and other vehicles when they\u2019re little, and I was the same.<\/p>\n

Ever since I was young, I\u2019ve been fascinated by trucks, trains, cars, and all kinds of vehicles<\/strong>. But I hardly ever got to see cool cars in person, and I didn\u2019t know where I could go to find them.<\/p>\n

Then I started playing racing games against my friends and discovered that there were all sorts of sports cars and supercars in the world. That only made me even more passionate about cars.<\/p>\n

Eventually, I got the chance to see a supercar in person for the first time. It was in Kobe, and I think it was an orange Lamborghini Murci\u00e9lago<\/strong>\u2026 It left an incredible impression.<\/p>\n

The sound was completely different\u2014and far more powerful\u2014than it was in a video game. Seeing the car move right in front of me was thrilling. From then on, I was completely hooked on cars.<\/p>\n

What do your parents think about your love of cars?<\/h5>\n

Hmm\u2026 I think they\u2019re a little exasperated with me. (laughs) They used to tell me to \u201cstudy,\u201d<\/strong> but I\u2019d do a bit of homework and then head straight out to photograph cars. They must have thought, \u201cThere\u2019s no stopping this kid, no matter what we say.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the other day, I asked my parents what they thought about the hobby I\u2019ve pursued, and they said, \u201cIt\u2019s amazing how many people you can meet when you really devote yourself to something!\u201d<\/strong> Maybe they\u2019re starting to approve. (laughs)<\/p>\n

Where did you go to photograph cars when you were in junior high school?<\/h5>\n

I often went to Midosuji in Osaka to take pictures<\/strong>. It used to be a well-known spot where supercars would park, and I took a lot of photos there. These days, though, the police enforce the rules more strictly, so you hardly see supercars there anymore.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I was basically car spotting, but even back then, I didn\u2019t feel right about photographing cars without the owner\u2019s permission or posting pictures on social media without obscuring license plates and people\u2019s faces<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If I\u2019m going to photograph someone\u2019s prized car, I want to follow basic etiquette: ask the owner first<\/strong> and blur license plates and faces before posting photos on social media<\/strong>. That\u2019s always been important to me.<\/p>\n

Creating His Own Opportunities<\/h4>\n
When did people start asking you to photograph their cars?<\/h5>\n

It\u2019s only happened fairly recently\u2014about two years ago. The first time I received a serious request was from a car tuning shop in Osaka. They asked me to take photos for an online used-car listing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d been visiting the shop for about three years because it carried parts from a custom-car brand I liked. While I was there, I\u2019d take photos of the cars and send them to the shop later.<\/p>\n

I was only doing it because I enjoyed it, but after I\u2019d visited a few times, they started hiring me officially.<\/strong> I kept at it, little by little, and gradually more opportunities came my way. That\u2019s how I got to where I am today.<\/p>\n

Is there a difference between taking photos as a hobby and shooting on commission?<\/h5>\n

Yes\u2026 When I\u2019m working on a commissioned shoot, I make sure to get certain essential shots<\/strong> and focus on capturing those first.<\/p>\n

When I was taking photos purely because I loved it, I\u2019d get so excited that I didn\u2019t think much about what I was shooting. Looking back, I\u2019d often wonder, \u201cWhy did I take this picture?\u201d or \u201cWhy didn\u2019t I shoot it from that angle instead?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

That\u2019s not an option when someone has hired me, so I make a point of getting all the shots I need.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Is there an angle you always shoot, no matter what the car is?<\/h5>\n

There\u2019s one angle I always shoot: the front three-quarter view<\/strong>. It shows off the front of the car as well as the lines along the side, and it feels like a natural perspective\u2014the kind you\u2019re most likely to see when a car is out on the street.<\/p>\n

I always shoot the rear three-quarter view<\/strong>, too. And since I upgraded to a camera with a better lens, I\u2019ve been able to take even sharper pictures.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s it like to meet successful luxury-car owners while you\u2019re still young?<\/h5>\n

It\u2019s interesting. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ll be successful in the same way, but there\u2019s a lot you can learn from people who have done well in life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That said, we all connect over our shared love of cars<\/strong>, so we usually just talk about cars. Even though I\u2019ve met some of them many times, I don\u2019t actually know things like what they do for a living<\/strong>. (laughs)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Do you get nervous asking people like that if you can photograph their cars?<\/h5>\n

I was nervous at first<\/strong>. Three years ago, I met someone on the Royu Driveway who I still see there almost every week. I\u2019d first learned about him through Instagram.<\/p>\n

I asked someone he was friends with, \u201cCould you introduce me to him the next time we\u2019re at Royu?\u201d<\/strong> They did, and we met soon after.<\/p>\n

The first time I saw him, he had an incredible aura about him\u2026 He seemed like no ordinary person, with a presence that kept people at a distance. I was pretty intimidated. (laughs)<\/p>\n

But when I actually spoke with him, he was very friendly and approachable. I later asked if I could photograph his car again<\/strong>, and now I sometimes visit his home to take pictures. On occasion, he\u2019s even let me drive some of his rare cars.<\/p>\n

You really take the initiative and make the most of opportunities!<\/h5>\n

Yes\u2026 I suppose I do take the initiative. I think taking action<\/strong> is incredibly important.<\/p>\n

For example, I first connected with the owner who later asked me to come to Tokyo that night to take photos<\/strong> when I happened to be in Tokyo. I sent him an Instagram DM saying, \u201cI\u2019m in Tokyo right now. If you\u2019re free, would it be all right if I took some pictures of your car?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It took a lot of courage, and I was really nervous when I sent that first DM. But he said, \u201cSure!\u201d<\/strong> and that\u2019s how our connection\u2014and many others\u2014began.<\/p>\n

Of course, some people don\u2019t want their cars photographed. But after meeting lots of people, I\u2019ve gradually developed a feel for who might be open to it and who might not<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A Photography Trip to London<\/h4>\n
Did you really go to London just to take photos?<\/h5>\n

Yes. I went purely because I wanted to photograph cars. I chose London because I thought the contrast between its streets and the supercars would be beautiful<\/strong>, and I wanted to see it for myself.<\/p>\n

I spent the whole day taking pictures of cars. I wasn\u2019t interested in sightseeing, so when I had a little free time, I thought, \u201cI should at least take a quick look at Buckingham Palace, since it\u2019s so famous.\u201d<\/strong> That was about it. (laughs)<\/p>\n

I went in the summer, when London is a popular summer retreat for wealthy people from Dubai. Incredible cars owned by Dubai\u2019s super-rich were everywhere.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Did you see cars there that you\u2019d never find in Japan?<\/h5>\n

The caliber of the cars was just incredible. You might see some of them in Tokyo, but there were so many cars you\u2019d almost never come across in Kobe.<\/p>\n

Bugattis, the 918 Spyder, and a six-wheel G-Class\u2026<\/strong> There were museum-worthy cars just parked on the street. I also saw plenty of Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. It really felt like \u201cthis is Britain, after all.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The customizations were wild, too. Some cars were absolutely covered in gold. They were so over-the-top that I found myself thinking, \u201cDo these people have an unlimited supply of money?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I also think cars look cool overseas because the license plates blend in with the design so well. I wish Japan had plates like that.<\/p>\n

3) A Car Photographer\u2019s Dreams for the Future<\/h3>\n

A Little about Life Outside Photography<\/h4>\n

Out of the blue, what\u2019s your type?<\/h5>\n

Wow, that really is out of the blue! Let me think\u2026 I can\u2019t come up with an answer right away, but if I get married, I wouldn\u2019t want my partner telling me what to do with my hobbies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I guess I\u2019d also value having similar values<\/strong>\u2014that may sound pretty conventional, but it matters to me.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

You\u2019re in your fourth year of university. Are you job hunting?<\/h5>\n

I\u2019m right in the middle of job hunting. My parents tell me to \u201cmake sure you get a proper job,\u201d<\/strong> but I haven\u2019t figured out what I want to do in the future yet.<\/p>\n

\u2026Though at this point, I really should make a decision soon. (laughs)<\/p>\n

After graduation, should I keep pursuing the hobby I\u2019m passionate about, or get a job and take car photos in my spare time and on weekends?<\/p>\n

I want to own the supercars and sports cars I\u2019ve always admired someday<\/strong>, and realistically, I wonder if photography alone will get me there. Maybe it could if I became exceptionally successful at it\u2026<\/p>\n

So maybe it would make more sense to start by getting a well-paying job\u2026<\/p>\n

On the other hand, many of the people whose cars I photograph have started their own businesses, and I\u2019d like to be independent, too. They tell me, \u201cIf you want to start a business, you should just do it soon.\u201d<\/strong> I\u2019m still weighing it all up.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Would you rather work within an organization or make your own decisions and work independently?<\/h5>\n

Hmm\u2026 I\u2019m not really a fan of being told what to do. (laughs) I think I\u2019m probably better suited to working for myself.<\/p>\n

Lately, though, I\u2019ve been thinking that it might be hard to make a living from photography alone, so video could be another option<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I mentioned earlier the person I met on the Royu Driveway three years ago. He\u2019s recently bought video equipment to film his own car, so I\u2019ve been wondering if I could learn about making videos from him. I\u2019ve got a lot to think about.<\/p>\n

The Royu Driveway<\/h4>\n
What makes the Royu Driveway special?<\/h5>\n

All kinds of car enthusiasts gather at Royu<\/strong>\u2014from owners of the latest sports cars and rare supercars to people with classic Porsches. It\u2019s fascinating to talk with them and hear things you\u2019d never normally get the chance to hear<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A lot of the people who come to Royu are friendly and easy to talk to. I can\u2019t tell if they\u2019re joking or serious when they casually ask, \u201cWant to drive it?\u201d<\/strong>\u2014even when it\u2019s an unbelievably expensive car. (laughs)<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know what many of them do for a living, but our shared love of cars gives us plenty to talk about, and we become friends. You don\u2019t find an atmosphere like that just anywhere. Especially in Kansai, I can\u2019t think of anywhere else quite like Royu.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What car would you like to buy someday?<\/h5>\n

I\u2019d have to say a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta<\/strong>. I love the way it looks and sounds. I\u2019ve heard from owners that it\u2019s surprisingly usable as an everyday car<\/strong>, which makes it even more appealing. I love blue, so a blue F12 would be amazing.<\/p>\n

But I see so many cool cars that it\u2019s hard to choose\u2026 Lamborghinis are amazing, and the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet is incredibly cool, too. Decisions, decisions. (laughs)<\/p>\n

Can you show us your favorite photo so far?<\/h5>\n

Sure. I\u2019m happy to show you my photos, but I have so many favorites that it\u2019s hard to pick just one. If I had to choose, I\u2019d say these are among them.<\/p>\n

What are your dreams and goals for the future?<\/h5>\n

I want to buy my own supercar and bring it to places where sports cars and supercars gather, like Royu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe guy who used to spend all his time taking photos at Royu has now turned up in a supercar he bought himself!\u201d (laughs)<\/p>\n

I think the people who\u2019ve supported me there would be happy to see that.<\/p>\n

There are lots of great places to photograph cars in Japan\u2014in Kyoto, in the great outdoors, and all across the country. But they\u2019re often far away or reached by narrow, hard-to-drive roads, which can make it difficult to get there and shoot.<\/p>\n

If I had my own car, I could go wherever I wanted without worrying about that. So yes, I\u2019ll have to buy a car of my own someday.<\/strong> If I start getting photography requests every day, maybe I\u2019ll be able to make that dream come true. I\u2019ll keep working hard!<\/p>\n
