1) Shooting Cars He Loves<\/h3>\n

A Glimpse into Rikui\u2019s Daily Life<\/h4>\n

What\u2019s a typical day like for Rikui?<\/h5>\n

On weekdays, he leads a fairly normal student life, working part-time and attending university classes. Of course, if a shooting request comes in, he changes his plans and heads out even on weekdays<\/strong>.
\nOn weekends, he often takes car photos in front of Kobe Daimaru, and almost every Sunday morning, he goes to Royu Driveway<\/strong> to photograph cars of owners he knows and those visiting the observatory.
\nWhile he now receives more requests for shoots, he originally started as a typical car spotter, asking owners on the street, “May I take a photo of your car?” before shooting<\/strong>.
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

Cars have so many different designs. Isn\u2019t it really hard to capture each beautifully?<\/h5>\n

That\u2019s true… The atmosphere of the same car can change a lot depending on how you shoot it. For me, it\u2019s mostly about taking photos from various angles first and then selecting the best ones later<\/strong>.
\nIf it\u2019s a rare car you hardly ever see, I take quite a few shots, but usually, I take about 10 photos per car.<\/p>\n

How much time do you spend editing your photos?<\/h5>\n

Editing can take anywhere from 5 minutes to about an hour, depending on the photo. I work intuitively, so if I start to hesitate, the results usually aren\u2019t good. It\u2019s like falling deeper and deeper into a trap…
\nSo when it comes to editing, I value intuition over spending too much time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why did you choose the pen name “KUGATTI”?<\/h5>\n

Back in junior high, my cram school friends called me “Kugacchi”<\/strong>, and when written in Roman letters, it looks a bit like “BUGATTI,” so I thought I\u2019d make it sound like a car brand (laughs).
\nAlso, my memory is a bit fuzzy, but before settling on KUGATTI, I used “KUGANI” for a while. Then it became “Y.KUGATTI,” and finally just “KUGATTI”<\/strong>.
\nAs for my Twitter and Instagram ID “V12_SCL,” it comes from my love for V12 cars<\/strong> and my early Twitter ID “@SuperCarsLOVE,” from which I took the initials SCL.
\nI arranged “V12_SCL” because I admired a similar style on a UK license plate (laughs).
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

You live in Kobe but even go to Tokyo for shoots?<\/h5>\n

Yes. Once, an owner I know asked, “Can you come to Tokyo tonight to shoot my car?”<\/strong> I took a day off from my part-time job and went.
\n\"\"
\n\"\"
\nI always keep in mind to “grab opportunities as soon as they come!”<\/strong>, so I immediately said “I\u2019m in!” without hesitation.
\nIf I had hesitated and missed that chance, I would have regretted it later. So I live by “Cars always come first, no matter what!”<\/strong>
\nI really, really love cars (laughs).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s amazing how you maintain relationships with owners after shooting their cars!<\/h5>\n

I\u2019m very grateful. I take photos of cars I love, edit them as I like, get the owners\u2019 contact info to send them the photos, and upload them to Instagram…
\nI\u2019m just doing ordinary things, but it makes people happy, which is very rewarding. One owner once told me:<\/p>\n

“Kugacchi\u2019s photos have value. He\u2019s one of the few Japanese who can take truly captivating car photos.”<\/p>\n

That made me very happy and at the same time motivated me to keep pushing myself even harder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Passion for Car Photography<\/h4>\n
What do you think makes your photos so special?<\/h5>\n

Honestly, I\u2019m just taking photos because I love cars, so I don\u2019t really know (laughs)… But I think my genuine love for cars and the joy I get from shooting them probably shows in my photos.
\nI started shooting cars in junior high, but I wasn\u2019t good at first. Initially, I just wanted to record cool cars<\/strong>, so I used my smartphone.
\n\"\"

\nBut gradually, I wanted to capture them looking cool<\/strong>.
\nI bought two compact digital cameras over time and used them until they wore out. Then I borrowed a DSLR from a friend, got used to it, and finally bought my own DSLR. After about a year and a half, I upgraded to a new DSLR, which I use now.
\nI\u2019ve taken countless photos. At events, I sometimes shoot 1,000 to 2,000 photos at once<\/strong>, so I\u2019ve probably taken hundreds of thousands or even millions by now (laughs).
\nAfter seven years of shooting so many photos, I think I\u2019ve gradually grasped how to shoot cars attractively.

What drives you so much to keep photographing cars?<\/h5>\n

Simply put, I just love cars (laughs). But more than wanting to take great photos, I want to see amazing cars<\/strong>.
\nWhen I see a great car in front of me, I think, “Wow, that\u2019s so cool!”<\/strong> and enjoy taking cool photos of it.<\/p>\n

Which do you like better, taking photos or driving?<\/h5>\n

Hmm… That\u2019s a tough one. They\u2019re totally different things, so I can\u2019t really compare. But in the future,<\/p>\n

“I want to buy a car I love, drive it myself, go to my favorite shooting spots, and take as many photos of my car as I want.”<\/p>\n

That\u2019s my dream (laughs).<\/p>\n

2) The Path to Becoming a Car Photographer<\/h3>\n

A Love for Cars from a Young Age<\/h4>\n

Did you become a car lover because your family was into cars?<\/h5>\n

No, actually, no one in my family is into cars<\/strong> (laughs). But I think most boys like cars and vehicles when they\u2019re young, and I was no different.
\nFrom a young age, I was very interested in trucks, trains, and cars<\/strong>. But I rarely had the chance to see cool cars in real life or knew where to find them.
\nThen, after playing car racing games with friends, I learned about various sports cars and supercars, which fueled my passion.
\nLater, I had my first chance to see a supercar in person in Kobe \u2014 I think it was an orange Lamborghini Murci\u00e9lago<\/strong> \u2014 and it was a huge shock.
\nThe sound was totally different from the game, and seeing the car move right in front of me was thrilling. That\u2019s when I completely fell for cars.<\/p>\n

What do your parents say about your love for cars?<\/h5>\n

Hmm… I think they\u2019re a bit exasperated (laughs). Even when they told me to “study,”<\/strong> I\u2019d go off to take car photos instead, so they probably think “Nothing can stop this kid.”<\/strong>
\nBut recently, when I asked them what they think about my hobby, they said, “When you master something, you meet all kinds of people!”<\/strong> So maybe they\u2019re starting to accept it a bit (laughs).<\/p>\n

Where did you take car photos when you were in junior high?<\/h5>\n

I often went all the way to Osaka\u2019s Midosuji<\/strong>. There used to be a famous spot where supercars would park, and I shot there a lot. But now, with stricter police enforcement, supercars are rarely seen.

\n\"\"
\nI was basically a car spotter, but personally, I felt uncomfortable with taking photos without the owner\u2019s permission or posting photos with visible license plates or faces on social media<\/strong>.
\nSince I was photographing precious cars, I always wanted to observe basic manners like asking the owner first<\/strong> and blurring license plates and faces before posting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Seizing Opportunities<\/h4>\n
When did people start asking you to shoot their cars?<\/h5>\n

That actually started only recently, about two years ago. The first serious request was from a tuning shop in Osaka asking me to shoot photos for their used car sales website<\/strong>.
\nI had been visiting that shop for about three years, taking photos of cars they handled and sending them the pictures afterward.
\nThough I was just doing it for fun, after several visits, they officially asked me to shoot for them<\/strong>. Slowly but surely, I got more and more chances, leading to where I am now.<\/p>\n

Is there a difference between shooting for fun and shooting on request?<\/h5>\n

Yes… When shooting on request, I make sure to always capture certain key angles<\/strong> first.
\nWhen I was shooting just for fun, I was so excited I didn\u2019t think much, and later I\u2019d wonder, “Why did I take that photo? Why didn\u2019t I shoot from that angle?”<\/strong> and reflect on it.
\nBut when shooting professionally, I have to be thorough and not miss anything.

What\u2019s the one angle you always shoot, no matter the car?<\/h5>\n

I always shoot from the front diagonal<\/strong>. It shows the front well, the side body line, and is a natural angle you often see on the street.
\n\"\"

\nI also always shoot from the rear diagonal<\/strong>. Since upgrading to a better camera and lens, I\u2019ve been able to take even more beautiful photos.<\/p>\n

How is it to interact with successful luxury car owners at a young age?<\/h5>\n

It\u2019s interesting. I don\u2019t know if I\u2019ll become like them, but there\u2019s a lot to learn from successful people<\/strong>.
\nSince we\u2019re connected by our shared love of cars, we mostly just talk about cars. So even though I meet them often, I don\u2019t actually know what kind of work they do<\/strong> (laughs).

Are you nervous asking them to photograph their cars?<\/h5>\n

I was nervous at first<\/strong>. I met one owner at Royu Driveway three years ago and have been seeing him almost every week since. I first found him on Instagram.
\nThen I asked someone close to him, “Could you introduce me when I come to Royu?”<\/strong> and was introduced.
\nWhen we first met, his aura was incredible \u2014 he seemed untouchable and intimidating (laughs).
\nBut he turned out to be very friendly, and since then I\u2019ve asked to shoot his car again. Now I even visit his home to photograph his cars, and sometimes get to drive rare cars.<\/p>\n

You really take initiative and seize opportunities!<\/h5>\n

Yes, I do. I think taking action is really important<\/strong>.
\nFor example, the owner who asked me to shoot in Tokyo \u2014 I actually sent him a DM on Instagram saying, “I\u2019m in Tokyo now, would you like me to take photos of your car?”<\/strong> when I happened to be there.
\nI was very nervous and needed courage to send that first DM, but when he said “OK!”<\/strong>, my network expanded.
\nOf course, some owners say no to photos, but after meeting many people, I\u2019ve developed a sense of who might say yes or no.

About the London Shooting Trip<\/h4>\n
Did you really go to London just to shoot cars?<\/h5>\n

Yes, I just wanted to take car photos, and that was the only reason I went. I chose London because I thought the contrast between London\u2019s streets and supercars would be beautiful<\/strong> and wanted to see it with my own eyes.
\nI spent the whole day shooting cars and wasn\u2019t interested in sightseeing. When I had free time, I thought, “I should at least see Buckingham Palace,”<\/strong> and just took a quick look (laughs).
\nI went in summer, and London is a summer retreat for wealthy people from Dubai, so there were tons of incredible cars from Dubai\u2019s billionaires.

\n\"\"<\/p>\n

Were there amazing cars you can\u2019t see in Japan?<\/h5>\n

The level of cars was just too high. You might see some in Tokyo, but in Kobe, you almost never see them.
\nThere were Bugatti, 918 Spyder, G63 6×6\u2026<\/strong> and many museum-level cars parked on the street. Rolls-Royce and Bentley were also common. It really felt like “This is Britain.”<\/strong>

\nThe customizations were insane, too. Some cars were covered in gold, and I thought, “These people must have unlimited money…”<\/strong>.
\nAlso, overseas license plates blend well with the car design, which looks cool. I wish Japan had plates like that.<\/p>\n

3) The Future Dream of a Car Photographer<\/h3>\n

About His Private Life<\/h4>\n

Suddenly, what kind of woman do you like?<\/h5>\n

Wow, that\u2019s sudden! Hmm… I can\u2019t answer immediately, but if I get married, I don\u2019t want someone who interferes with my hobbies<\/strong>.
\nAlso, someone whose values match mine<\/strong>… it\u2019s a common answer, but I think that\u2019s important.
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

You\u2019re a senior now. Are you job hunting?<\/h5>\n

I\u2019m actually in the middle of it now. My parents tell me to “get a proper job,”<\/strong> but I haven\u2019t decided my future yet.
\n…Though at this point, I really should decide soon (laughs).
\nI wonder if I should keep pursuing my hobby after graduation or get a job and shoot cars on the side during breaks and weekends.
\nSince I want to own a dream supercar or sports car<\/strong>, I think just shooting cars probably won\u2019t get me there unless I become extremely skilled.
\nSo maybe I should get a well-paying job first…
\nBut many of the people whose cars I photograph are entrepreneurs, and since I want to be independent, they tell me, “If you want to start a business, just do it early.”<\/strong> So I\u2019m quite torn.

Do you prefer working within an organization or deciding and acting on your own?<\/h5>\n

Hmm… I don\u2019t really like being used by others (laughs), so I think I\u2019m better suited to doing things myself.
\nLately, I\u2019ve been thinking, “It might be tough to make a living from photography alone, so maybe I should also get into video.”<\/strong>
\nThe person I met three years ago at Royu Driveway recently got equipment to shoot videos of his car, so I\u2019m thinking about learning video from him… I\u2019m considering various options.

What\u2019s the charm of Royu Driveway?<\/h5>\n

Royu gathers all kinds of car enthusiasts<\/strong>. From new sports cars to rare supercars and even classic Porsches… Talking with these owners lets me hear stories you\u2019d never hear anywhere else<\/strong>.

\n\"\"
\n\"\"
\nAlso, many people who come to Royu are friendly. Sometimes, joking or not, they casually say things like, “Want to drive it?”<\/strong> about their insanely expensive cars (laughs).
\nMany don\u2019t reveal their jobs, but through our shared love of cars, we can talk about all sorts of things and become friends. That kind of space is rare. Especially in Kansai, I think Royu is the only place like it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What car do you want to buy in the future?<\/h5>\n

Probably a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta<\/strong>. I really love the sound and looks. Owners say it\u2019s quite usable as a daily driver<\/strong>, which is great. I like blue, so a blue F12 would be perfect.

\nBut since I see so many cool cars, I can\u2019t decide. Lamborghinis are cool, and the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet is amazing too… I\u2019m torn (laughs).<\/p>\n

Can you show us your favorite photo among your works?<\/h5>\n

Sure. I don\u2019t mind showing photos, but I have too many favorites to pick just one. If I had to choose, it would be these.

What are your future dreams and goals?<\/h5>\n

I want to be able to buy a supercar myself and park it at places like Royu where sports cars and supercars gather<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“The guy who used to shoot photos at Royu is now driving his own supercar and coming back to Royu!” (laughs)<\/p>\n

I think everyone who has supported me so far would be happy.

\nThere are many great shooting spots across Japan\u2014in Kyoto, in nature\u2014but those places often have narrow or hard-to-drive roads, making shooting difficult.
\nBut if it\u2019s my own car, I can go anywhere without worry, so in the end, I have to buy my own car<\/strong>! If I keep getting shooting requests every day, maybe I\u2019ll get there. I\u2019ll keep working hard!
