The 16th installment features a purchase, options, and driving review of the Cayman (981)<\/strong> from “Takemaru.”<\/p>\n

\nThough I\u2019m a young person turning 24 this year, I boldly bought my first car\u2014a Porsche. I hope this helps those young people who, like me, are interested in Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1) How I Came to Purchase<\/h3>\n

\u2014Looking for Something to Make Life More Enjoyable<\/h4>\n

I\u2019ve always been interested in cars, and after starting my first year as a working adult, I vaguely set a goal to \u201cone day drive a supercar.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I actually started working, there was a period when I lost motivation due to workplace environment, treatment, and breaking up with my girlfriend. But then I thought, \u201cThis won\u2019t do! I need to start something new that makes life fun!\u201d<\/strong> That was the initial trigger to consider buying a car.<\/p>\n

\u2014Why I Chose Porsche<\/h4>\n

My father is also a car enthusiast and has driven BMWs, but since he hardly drives, I was in the luxury position of being able to freely use his BMW.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since he drove a 523i, I wanted to differentiate my car by choosing the opposite of the F10 523i\u2019s \u201c4-door, FR, automatic\u201d setup\u2014so I aimed for a \u201c2-door, MR, manual\u201d<\/strong> car.<\/p>\n

Additionally, I looked for a car that met these conditions: \u201clarge engine,\u201d \u201cenough space for luggage,\u201d \u201creliable,\u201d and \u201ccool interior.\u201d<\/strong> The 981 Cayman met all these criteria.<\/p>\n

I was searching for an Agate Grey MT, which was hard to find, but when one finally appeared in good condition and was highly recommended by the sales rep, I decided on this Cayman.<\/p>\n

I believe there\u2019s no other MR car that can carry this much luggage.<\/strong> Depending on the item, it can even fit one golf bag. The 987 model can fit two, apparently.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2014What Sealed the Deal<\/h4>\n

It was that my loan was approved. Since I was trying to buy a car costing more than twice my annual income, I secretly thought, \u201cThere\u2019s no way the loan will go through.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was prepared to give up if the loan was denied.<\/p>\n

2) Options \/ Specifications<\/h3>\n

Since I bought it used, I don\u2019t know all the details, but it seems to have \u201csports steering wheel,\u201d \u201ccarbon interior,\u201d \u201csports exhaust,\u201d and \u201call-leather interior.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The previous owner made quite a few modifications: carbon lip, bucket seats, ducktail(?) spoiler, and aftermarket coilovers.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Additionally, at delivery, I had the wheels painted black and fitted with colored crests.<\/strong> When I have more room in the budget, I want to paint the calipers yellow.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The steering wheel is left-hand drive. I chose left-hand drive thinking \u201cSince imported cars have the turn signal stalk on the left, it\u2019s better to operate the shifter and turn signals with separate hands.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, getting parking tickets is tricky. (In urban parking garages, there are often ticket machines on the left side as well.)<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Timeline to Delivery<\/h3>\n

After confirming the loan was likely to be approved at the dealership, I started searching at the end of December 2018, and delivery was in April 2019.<\/strong> If you\u2019re not particular about \u201cbody color\u201d and \u201cMT,\u201d I don\u2019t think you\u2019d have to wait this long.<\/p>\n

4) Porsche Performance Impressions After Ownership<\/h3>\n

\u2460 Engine<\/h4>\n

The engine revs smoothly, and I\u2019m especially satisfied with the sound. Maybe because it\u2019s MR, mechanical sounds come through clearly, enhancing the feeling of controlling the car.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2461 Manual Transmission<\/h4>\n

Originally, I only had an automatic license. After deciding to buy the Cayman and while searching for one that met my conditions, I upgraded my license.<\/strong> Besides the Cayman, the only MT cars I\u2019ve driven were training cars.<\/p>\n

So, I don\u2019t fully understand everything, but the 981 Cayman\u2019s manual shifter has a satisfying, crisp \u201cclick\u201d feel that\u2019s addictive.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even if you stall, the engine automatically restarts when you press the brake and clutch,<\/strong> so it\u2019s a generous feature that makes it beginner-friendly.<\/p>\n

However, the electronic handbrake usually holds automatically on most slopes, but since it\u2019s automatic, it\u2019s hard to tell when it will release,<\/strong> which can be inconvenient. On subtle slopes, it often doesn\u2019t hold at all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2462 Handling \/ Brakes<\/h4>\n

Compared to the 523i:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt turns insanely well! It\u2019s shocking how well it corners! Even at decent speeds, it handles with ease!\u201d<\/p>\n

I feel the car still has more to give, but I\u2019m too scared to push it to the limit. Sorry, Cayman\u2026<\/p>\n

On the other hand, I sometimes think, \u201cIt\u2019s scary beyond the limit.\u201d<\/strong> I\u2019m considering taking a Porsche driving lesson (Porsche Track Experience) to learn the car\u2019s limits and how to handle it properly beyond them.<\/p>\n

Regarding brakes, in everyday driving conditions, the 523i has more pedal travel and a more gradual bite even when pressed firmly, while the Cayman has less pedal travel but a sharper, more precise bite without sudden grabbing.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This likely reflects the conceptual difference between the comfort-focused 4-door sedan 523i and the 2-door sports car Cayman.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I imagine the difference becomes more pronounced on circuits or downhill mountain roads. (Mina recently bought a BMW too, so I\u2019m curious how she feels comparing it to Porsche.)<\/span><\/p>\n

When I drive my grandmother\u2019s Aqua in Fukuoka, her brakes are scary\u2014just a light press causes a sudden grab, making it jolt until you get used to it, haha.<\/p>\n

Next page \u2192 Cayman\u2019s Fuel Economy, Ride Comfort, and Circuit Driving\u2026?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2463 Fuel Economy<\/h4>\n

12\u201314 km\/L on the highway, and about 10 km\/L on local roads.<\/strong> Since the 523i\u2019s fuel economy is poor, I thought the Cayman was an eco car when I first saw its numbers (laughs).<\/p>\n

\u2464 Ride Comfort and Feel<\/h4>\n

The car has adjustable damping, ranging from stiff to moderate. For a sports car, I think the ride comfort is quite good.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, since it has bucket seats and aftermarket suspension, the ride comfort likely differs from a Cayman with stock parts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As for driving feel, while the 523i \u201cpushes its heavy body with a large engine steadily and confidently,\u201d the Cayman feels like \u201ca light body zooming with a big engine.\u201d<\/strong> (My vocabulary is lacking, haha.)<\/span><\/p>\n

The 523i often feels electronically assisted, with a noticeable lag in acceleration even when flooring the pedal in comfort mode. Sports mode improves response but not to the Cayman\u2019s level. Compared to the E46 320i my father owned before the 523i, the 523i also felt less responsive.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In contrast, the Cayman\u2019s MT and pure sports car nature make it respond quickly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

On the circuit, I felt the handling, braking, and rigidity<\/strong> stood out.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t driven other cars on circuits, so I can\u2019t compare, but it felt like the Cayman was telling me, \u201cYou can still turn more, grip harder, and brake more.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The car\u2019s performance was still untapped, but I wasn\u2019t able to keep up. Sorry, Cayman\u2014I\u2019ll get better at driving, I promise.<\/p>\n

\u2465 Family\u2019s Reaction<\/h4>\n

My mother was like, \u201cI can\u2019t believe you actually bought a Porsche\u2026\u201d<\/strong> I feel the same way. My father was happy.<\/p>\n

When I told my ex-girlfriend about this, she said, \u201cAre you stupid?\u201d<\/strong> And she was right.<\/p>\n

\u2466 Favorite Points<\/h4>\n

The sexy rear hips. Also, when I turn on the sports exhaust and lift off the accelerator to hear the \u201cbabababa\u201d sound, I even think, \u201cI\u2019m glad to be alive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

5) Options I Would Definitely Choose If Buying Another Porsche<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m satisfied with the current setup, but since I can\u2019t heel-toe at all and the organ-style accelerator pedal makes it especially difficult, I wish I had the Sports Chrono Package.<\/strong> (For the 981, the Sports Chrono Package enables auto-blip in Sport Plus mode.)<\/span><\/p>\n

But no more excuses\u2014I\u2019ll work hard to master heel-toe! Experienced MT drivers, please teach me!<\/p>\n

7) Things That Bother Me<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m not a big fan of the orange accents inside. Though when driving, it doesn\u2019t really bother me.<\/p>\n

8) Overall Impression<\/h3>\n

I love everything except the orange interior accents!<\/p>\n

9) What Porsche Means to Me<\/h3>\n

\u201cSomething that enriches my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though I had free use of the 523i, it was my father\u2019s car, so I never participated in imported car gatherings or meetings before. After buying a Porsche, I joined my first meeting.<\/strong> I\u2019ve met new people and expect to continue doing so.<\/p>\n

Since buying the Cayman, my work has been going well, so maybe it brings some good luck.<\/strong> I\u2019ll keep working hard to maintain this car.<\/p>\n
