Refinishing the Wheels on Our 911 (964)<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s a saying that \u201ceverything has a soul<\/strong>.\u201d Treat an appliance with care, and it may keep working reliably for years. And sometimes, the moment you say, \u201cIt\u2019s been acting up lately\u2014we should replace it<\/strong>,\u201d it suddenly starts working perfectly again.<\/p>\n

I sometimes wonder if the same thing can be said of cars.<\/p>\n

The other day, my husband had the wheels on our 911 (964) refinished at an automotive repair shop. Given the car\u2019s age, they had plenty of balancing marks and small scratches, and the clear coat had started peeling, leaving the finish looking dull.<\/p>\n

We had the wheels refinished by Total Repair Avenir<\/a> and didn\u2019t change anything else\u2014not the suspension or any other parts. Still, my husband said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know, but now that the wheels look so good, the 964 somehow seems to drive better. It\u2019s like how a car seems happy and runs more freely after you wash it.
\nToyota once did an experiment showing that adding aluminum tape to a car can improve its handling<\/strong>. I wonder if this is something like that\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7<\/p>\n

We humans are prone to imagining things, and there\u2019s even the placebo effect\u2014when someone feels better because they believe a treatment contains an effective ingredient, even though it doesn\u2019t<\/span>. So perhaps it\u2019s all in our heads. But I\u2019m not sure I can say it\u2019s *entirely* imaginary.<\/p>\n

How Each Porsche 964 Service Brings It to Life<\/h3>\n

The other day, I was thinking of heading to the supermarket on a rainy day and asked the kids if they wanted to come. They said, \u201cNo, we\u2019re watching YouTube,\u201d so\u2026w I decided to go shopping alone for a change.<\/p>\n

My husband suggested, \u201cWhy not take the 964, since you\u2019re going out anyway?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

But it was raining pretty hard, so I said, \u201cIt\u2019s raining, and I don\u2019t want to get it dirty<\/strong>.\u201d He replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s fine\u2014we can wash it again. It seems to drive better since we had the wheels refinished, and we\u2019ve replaced the headlights and interior lights with LEDs, so you can see how those feel, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Come to think of it, my husband has been tinkering with the 964 late into the night lately, doing all sorts of things as if he were \u201cbringing the 964 back to life as a modern car<\/strong>.\u201d I hope to share more about that in a future post.<\/p>\n

So I took the 964 out for a drive in the rain\u2014and it really did feel easier to drive than before.<\/p>\n

Of course, my husband had already told me it felt \u201cbetter<\/strong>.\u201d I\u2019ve also grown more comfortable driving the 964 over time, and I\u2019ve become more attached to it.<\/p>\n

Still, with every round of maintenance, it feels as though the car is responding\u2014and that, somehow, its spirit is growing stronger.<\/p>\n

The latest Porsche models are more capable, come with additional safety features, and are easier to drive. But with the 964, it feels like a \u201cwell-engineered car, built on solid fundamentals, is gradually getting back to the way it drove when it was new<\/strong>\u201d\u2014not that I was around to know what that was like<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Before the 964 came home, my husband started saying he was \u201cgetting interested in buying a 964<\/strong>\u201d and searched used-car listings almost every day. Honestly, I wondered, \u201cWhy go out of your way to buy such an old car? He really is a car enthusiast<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even after he bought it, he kept taking it in for maintenance. I watched and thought, \u201cI didn\u2019t realize an old car would cost this much to keep after you buy it. They really are a lot of work<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

But now I\u2019ve seen for myself that even a 30-year-old car can run this well if it\u2019s properly maintained and cared for. I\u2019ve come to think, \u201cThere\u2019s something wonderful about continuing to care for and drive a car built decades ago<\/strong>\u201d\u2014even if it does cost a fair bit<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Of course, that\u2019s only possible because the 964 is a capable, well-built car in the first place.<\/p>\n

A 911 with a Soul<\/h3>\n

To return to what I said at the beginning about everything having a soul, of all the cars in our household, the 964 feels like the one with the strongest soul\u2014though maybe that\u2019s just because it\u2019s an old car<\/span>.<\/p>\n

It was built in Germany, has driven all kinds of roads, and has seen all sorts of places and had all kinds of experiences. And now, with a new owner, it seems ready to keep going\u2014setting off on more adventures and giving it everything it\u2019s got\u2026<\/p>\n

By the way, it seems that well-kept 964s have recently been selling for more than \u00a510 million. My husband says:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI paid around \u00a57 million when I bought mine, but if I ever let it go, I might not be able to find another one in the same condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

He may be right\u2026 Once it\u2019s gone, we might not find another one like it. I hope we can keep taking good care of it for many years to come.<\/p>\n
