About the Porsche 911 GT3<\/h3>\n

Since the beginning of this year, my husband hasn\u2019t driven the 911 GT3 Touring even once. Wondering why, I asked him, “Hey, you haven\u2019t been driving the GT3 at all lately, have you?<\/strong>” and he replied,<\/p>\n

Yeah, well, it\u2019s winter, and it\u2019s cold, so it\u2019s dangerous.<\/p>\n

I said, “Ah, I see… I remember you mentioned last year at the end of the year when you drove the GT3 on the Royu Driveway in the rain, the tires didn\u2019t grip well and it was scary<\/a>,” and he said,<\/p>\n

Yeah, cup tires on cold days are no good. Well, if you drive slowly even on cold or rainy days, it\u2019s not dangerous, but then there\u2019s no point in driving the GT3 like that. So, I feel it\u2019s a waste to drive the GT3 in those conditions just to rack up mileage<\/strong>, and that\u2019s why I haven\u2019t been driving it.<\/p>\n

Our GT3 is equipped with cup tires, but when it was first delivered, my husband deliberately took it out on a heavy rain day to test the grip and drainage performance of the cup tires<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was around July, and his impression was that “for normal driving, there was no problem at all, and even at a bit higher speeds, the grip was better than expected<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

Regarding this, my husband said,<\/p>\n

Well, that was summer and the temperature was high, so it was okay then. But after experiencing the GT3 through all four seasons, I now really think I don\u2019t want to drive the GT3 with cup tires in winter<\/strong>. Cup tires are really made for the track, and compared to PS4 or PS4S tires, they don\u2019t grip well in low temperatures. On cold, rainy winter days, you really have to drive very carefully or it\u2019s dangerous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Speaking of which, two autumns ago, my husband was going to participate in Porsche\u2019s Driving School Master Course (Porsche Track Experience) at Fuji Speedway with the GT3, and we went along as a family, but it was ultimately canceled due to heavy rain<\/a>(I\u2019m a notorious rain-bringer, sorry about that\u2026 lol)<\/span><\/p>\n

At that time, the instructor explained,<\/p>\n

There are many participants driving GT3s and GT3RSs. Driving such cars on the circuit in this kind of weather is truly dangerous, so we had to make the decision to cancel. We apologize for the inconvenience.<\/p>\n

Honestly, I thought, “It\u2019s such a shame to have come all the way to Fuji<\/strong>,” but if the pros make that call, it really must be dangerous.<\/p>\n

I said, “But our GT3 Touring is designed for touring, so it seems like it wouldn\u2019t need cup tires for that, right?<\/strong> Yet it comes standard with cup tires,” and he said,<\/p>\n

Exactly. Both the GT3 and GT3 Touring come with cup tires as standard\u2014no options at order. When I drove at Suzuka Circuit, I felt cup tires are more sensitive than regular tires. Even a slight difference in air pressure makes a big difference. So, when the tires are warmed up and the pressure is just right, the grip is amazing and it feels fantastic<\/strong>. But I think the GT3 Touring\u2019s tires could be Pilot Sport 4S instead of cup tires<\/strong>. Sure, the absolute grip isn\u2019t as high as cup tires, but they perform steadily on any road surface. The GT3 Touring doesn\u2019t have the big rear wing since it\u2019s meant for touring, and the wing is really the main difference\u2026 I wish it were designed a bit more with touring in mind.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve heard that the GT3 Touring is designed with a lower ride height than the GT3, but officially they seem the same, so it\u2019s basically still a GT3 no matter what.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the 911 GT3 Touring Suitable for Touring?<\/h3>\n

My husband also said this:<\/p>\n

I once rode in a friend\u2019s 911 Speedster (991), and I felt that the Speedster is easier to take touring than the GT3 Touring<\/strong>. First, the suspension is completely different from the GT3\u2019s. Especially at low speeds, it\u2019s easier to ride. Also, the engine sound is enjoyable even at low revs, so just driving slowly on public roads you can enjoy that pleasant \u201cquawn<\/strong>\u201d sound. By the way, the Speedster\u2019s exhaust is titanium, similar to the GT3RS and 911R. On the other hand, the GT3\u2019s engine is tuned fully as a racing engine, so unless you rev it up, you don\u2019t get that great engine sound.<\/p>\n

I said, “So, even though it\u2019s called the GT3 \u2018Touring,\u2019 it\u2019s not really suited for touring, huh?<\/strong>” and he replied,<\/p>\n

No, I think it\u2019s perfectly suited for \u2018touring\u2019 on really fun, twisty roads<\/strong>. Driving roads like those in Izu or Hakone feels amazing, and the highway driving is breathtaking. But the drive to get to those fun roads, with heavy traffic and slow average speeds, is tough<\/strong>. For someone like me who enjoys long-distance \u2018grand touring\u2019\u2014traveling with the car\u2014it might not be the best fit.<\/p>\n

He added,<\/p>\n

Also, I think the fact it\u2019s a manual transmission matters. Recently, I rode in a friend\u2019s GT3 (991 late model) with PDK, and it was very easy to drive. The GT3 manual doesn\u2019t have an escape route\u2014you\u2019re constantly communicating with the car. Handling a 500-hp engine smoothly with clutch and throttle takes skill and practice, and it\u2019s mentally demanding. That\u2019s part of what makes this car fun, but when I go on tours of 2000 km or more, it can be tiring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I asked, “But your Boxster is also manual, right? Doesn\u2019t that tire you out? You even said after driving 2000 km recently, you still felt great and wanted to keep going, lol<\/strong>,” and he said,<\/p>\n

The Boxster is manual too, so you do have to communicate with the car, but it\u2019s easier to drive at low speeds<\/strong>. You can start in first gear and ease off the throttle a bit, and the Boxster is fine, but the GT3 will jerk if you\u2019re not careful at low speeds. The late-model 911 GT3 has no shift shock if you shift while keeping the throttle down<\/strong><\/a>, but the power is so strong that you need a big gap to the car in front to do that. So, it\u2019s basically impossible to do well in city traffic.<\/p>\n

He went on,<\/p>\n

If you only owned the GT3, you might not feel this way, but since I also compare it to the Boxster and 911 Cabriolet, low-speed driving is tiring and I don\u2019t want to drive it on cold winter days<\/strong>. But tires have a huge impact on the car, so switching to Pilot Sport 4S might make it much easier to drive<\/strong>. But then I\u2019d just be buying tires all the time\u2026 I just bought winter tires and wheels for the Cayenne recently, and tires are really expensive\u2026<\/p>\n

He muttered on like that.<\/p>\n

Listening to him, I was reminded just how amazing people who buy sports cars like Porsches really are. I still have a lot to learn, and I\u2019m sure after buying one I\u2019d be thinking, \u201cOh no, this isn\u2019t what I expected!\u201d a lot (though I don\u2019t have the funds yet, so no worries for now lol)<\/span>.<\/p>\n
