{"id":37551,"date":"2019-08-15T06:00:44","date_gmt":"2019-08-14T21:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37551"},"modified":"2019-10-01T12:26:03","modified_gmt":"2019-10-01T03:26:03","slug":"bmw-drive-in-kyoto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/bmw-drive-in-kyoto\/","title":{"rendered":"Driving Around Kyoto in a BMW: Local Road Tips and More"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">Taking the BMW to My Family Home in Kyoto<\/h3>\n<p>I had a growing list of things to get done, but<strong> with my eldest daughter on summer break from kindergarten, concentrating at home was nearly impossible.<\/strong> So, just before the Obon holiday, I took the kids to stay with my parents for a few days.<\/p>\n<p>Until now, I\u2019d almost always made the trip in my Golf, so<strong> this was my first time driving to my parents\u2019 home in the BMW 320i.<\/strong> My parents, who worry deeply about my driving, reminded me again and again:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cDon\u2019t speed on the highway, and please drive safely all the way here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We made it there without a hitch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4390-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My mother took care of all the housework, my father kept the kids entertained, and I got to spend the day at my computer<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (my parents\u2019 home really is heaven, haha).<\/span> Thanks to that, I finished everything I needed to do much sooner than expected.<\/p>\n<p>So the next day, I took the kids out for an adventure.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Driving Around Kyoto in a BMW<\/h3>\n<p>I thought about where to go, but with daytime highs topping 35\u00b0C (95\u00b0F) day after day, we decided to head for Mount Hiei in search of cooler air. Since we were going to Mount Hiei, I was hoping to take the BMW up the Hiei-zan Driveway\u2014but\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The kids looked at me with shining eyes and said, \u201c<strong>We want to ride the cable car!<\/strong>\u201d So my drive up Hiei-zan Driveway would have to wait, haha.<\/p>\n<p>First, we drove to Demachiyanagi, then took the<strong> Eizan Main Line to Yase-Hieizanguchi<\/strong>, before continuing up the mountain by cable car and ropeway.<\/p>\n<p>I was born and raised in Kyoto, but I\u2019d never ridden the Eizan Railway in my life, so I was secretly looking forward to it.<\/p>\n<p>The one thing I was worried about was<strong> getting caught in heavy traffic on the way to Demachiyanagi.<\/strong> I wondered if driving a manual through Kyoto traffic might be a bit of a pain, but soon enough, the morning of our outing arrived.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">A Few Things to Know About Driving in Kyoto<\/h3>\n<p>Central Kyoto is laid out like a<strong> grid, with north\u2013south and east\u2013west streets crossing at right angles.<\/strong> It\u2019s easy to navigate, but<strong> many of the east\u2013west streets in central Kyoto are quite narrow, and a lot are one-way.<\/strong> When I drive around the city, I usually stick to the main roads.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4398-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4395-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By the way, each street in the city has its own name. There\u2019s even a traditional Kyoto street-name song that helps you remember their names and order. Starting from the north, it goes:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cMaru (Marutamachi), Take (Takeyamachi), Ebisu (Ebisugawa), Ni (Nijo), Oshi (Oshikoji), Oike (Oike)\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song strings together the first syllables of the street names. My mother, who was also born and raised in Kyoto, taught it to me when I was little, and I can still sing it today<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (though I hardly ever need to, haha).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Intersections are easy to identify, too: they\u2019re called by the names of the<strong> north\u2013south and east\u2013west streets<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (in either order)<\/span><\/strong> that meet there.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the intersection of Karasuma Street and Shijo Street is called<strong> Shijo-Karasuma<\/strong>, while the junction of Horikawa Street and Imadegawa Street is<strong> Horikawa-Imadegawa<\/strong>. So if someone says, \u201c<strong>Turn right at Horikawa-Imadegawa<\/strong>\u201d or \u201c<strong>Let\u2019s keep going to Karasuma-Marutamachi<\/strong>,\u201d you can picture exactly where they mean.<\/p>\n<p>In Kyoto, people also say<strong> agaru (\u201cgo up\u201d) when heading north and sagaru (\u201cgo down\u201d) when heading south.<\/strong> When I told a friend at university, \u201cIt\u2019s just up that road,\u201d they asked, \u201cWhat do you mean, \u2018up\u2019?\u201d That was when I first realized<strong> agaru and sagaru aren\u2019t expressions used across Japan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/\u30b9\u30af\u30ea\u30fc\u30f3\u30b7\u30e7\u30c3\u30c8-2019-08-09-13.06.19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"681\" height=\"653\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you put it like that, Kyoto sounds like such a charming city. But the reality is that<strong> the roads in central Kyoto are very busy.<\/strong> Osaka and Kobe get plenty of traffic, too, but Kyoto is a major tourist destination, so<strong> the number of city buses and tour buses is something else.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in the left lane, a city bus in front of you is almost guaranteed to stop, holding you up. Even in the right lane, a tour bus turning right can often block your way.<\/p>\n<p>I guess that\u2019s just one of those things about driving in Kyoto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/bmw-drive-in-kyoto\/2\/\"><strong>Next page \u2192 Navigating Kyoto\u2019s traffic in a manual, our first ropeway ride, and more\u2026<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Our First Ropeway Ride<\/h3>\n<p>After all that background, here\u2019s what happened. I spent a little time deciding whether to take Horikawa Street, Karasuma Street, or Kawabata Street north to Demachiyanagi. We weren\u2019t in a hurry, and had plenty of time, so I chose<strong> Kawabata Street, which runs alongside the Kamo River and gives you a feel for Kyoto<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (though it\u2019s a busy road).<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (Sorry for all the local details!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13373\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4400-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As we got closer to central Kyoto, traffic got heavier and we had to stop and start much more often. But<strong> driving a manual in traffic was far easier than I\u2019d expected.<\/strong> The BMW 320i\u2019s clutch is light and easy to operate, which may have helped, but I enjoyed the drive from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe traffic in a manual isn\u2019t so bad after all, haha.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4399-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After getting through the traffic on Kawabata Street, we finally arrived at Demachiyanagi Station, about 20 minutes later than planned. From there, we switched to the Eizan Railway and continued toward the cable car. We usually get around by car, but it was nice to take a local train for a change.<\/p>\n<p>The kids were having a great time, too.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4405-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13377\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4406-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As for the ropeway, there was no air conditioning in the cabin<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (perhaps to save energy?)<\/span>, so we got pretty sweaty. Still, we got a sweeping view of Kyoto and had a memorable experience, so it was worth it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4411-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13378\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4416-600x800.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13379\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4422-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The summit was hotter than I\u2019d expected. It was cooler than down below, but we still wandered around wiping sweat from our faces and saying, \u201cIt\u2019s hot!\u201d<strong> Since we usually get around by car, it\u2019s probably good to get some exercise and work up a sweat once in a while.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13382\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4415-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMG_4432-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of my blog readers told me that another option is to drive up the Hiei-zan Driveway, park at the summit, and walk from there to the ropeway\u2019s upper station.<\/p>\n<p>Good to know\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, the parking lots along the Hiei-zan Driveway fill up quickly on clear evenings. I\u2019ve been interested in driving it for a while, though the toll is a little steep<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (even the shortest round trip from the Tanotani tollgate costs \u00a5840).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Still, I\u2019d love to go next time I get the chance.
