Hello everyone. This is Mina, the administrator of “Welcome Home, PORSCHE.” This series, Porsche Owners File<\/a>, was created in response to readers\u2019 requests to share the real voices of various Porsche owners. The 19th installment features a purchase, options, and driving review of the 718 Cayman<\/strong> from “Naiya.”<\/p>\n

\nSuzuki first-generation Swift (had no interest in cars at all)<\/span> \u2192 Suzuki second-generation Wagon R (also no interest in cars)<\/span> \u2192 Honda second-generation Integra Type R [DC5 model] (awakened to the greatness of sports cars, lol)<\/span>
\n\u30fbMessage to readers:
\nThe 718 Cayman has a compact body, so despite being a sports car, it\u2019s perfectly manageable for everyday use<\/strong>. Removing the tonneau cover reveals a rear luggage space that can hold (considering it\u2019s mid-engine)<\/span> a decent amount of cargo<\/strong>, making it practical enough even for those who can only own one car.
\nFor a Porsche that\u2019s within reach for ordinary people who work hard, there\u2019s the Macan SUV (inline-4) in the same price range, but I bought the Cayman because I believe the essence of Porsche lies in low-riding sports cars<\/strong>.
\nAlso, since “the latest Porsche is the best Porsche,” I decided to buy new rather than a well-maintained used one. (There have already been two recalls since the 718 was introduced.)<\/span> Car critic Soichi Shimizu says, “Poor people should buy Ferraris,” but I want to say, “Ordinary people should buy the 718 Cayman new.”<\/strong> lol<\/p>\n

1) How I Came to Purchase<\/h3>\n

I chose Porsche because I was looking for a cool manual transmission (MT) car available new<\/strong>, and that led me to the Porsche 718 Cayman.<\/p>\n

First, I searched with the premise of a cool MT car available new<\/strong>, which narrowed it down to two choices: the Honda Fit 5MT Cross Style (personally, the only cool MT cars available new alongside the 718)<\/span>.

\nI fell for the allure of the 2-door coupe and chose the 718, but since the S grade and above were over budget, I went with the basic 718 model.
\n\u2193
\nAlthough I admired the open-air thrill of the Boxster, since I could only park outdoors and didn\u2019t want to damage the soft top, and because I think the Cayman has the coolest design among Porsches<\/strong>, I decided on the closed-body Cayman.<\/p>\n

2) Options \/ Specifications<\/h3>\n

The specs are the base grade 718 Cayman right-hand drive. Options included “No model name logo,” “6-speed MT,” “Power folding mirrors,” “Park assist with reversing camera<\/strong>(front and rear obstacle sensors)<\/span>,” “Floor mats,” and “Passenger seat luggage net.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u30fbI chose “No model name logo” because I thought it would be easier to wipe the body without any bumps, lol.
\n\u30fbI chose “6-speed MT” because I discovered the joy of sporty manual shifting with my previous Honda Type R. The PDK in the test drive felt too easy and not fun, lol.
\n\u30fbI added “Power folding mirrors” just in case I had to park or squeeze through tight spots.
\n\u30fb”Park assist with reversing camera” for the same reason, since the apartment parking is narrow.
\n\u30fbI wonder if anyone skips floor mats, lol.
\n\u30fbThe salesman said, “It\u2019s free, so I added the passenger seat luggage net” and had already checked it in the car config, so I went with it, lol.<\/p>\n

3) Delivery Process<\/h3>\n

\n\u30fbMid-April 2019: Suddenly received a call from the salesman saying, “The car is already completed and currently being shipped by boat (sweat).” (Why there was no notification from the factory about production month or completion is unknown, lol)<\/span>

4) Porsche Performance Experienced After Ownership<\/h3>\n

Though it\u2019s the “entry-level” Porsche available new, with the chassis, engine, and suspension all standard “completely stock,” the overall body rigidity, lightness, high driving performance, and the perfect balance of natural feel without electronic intervention are outstanding.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2460 Engine \/ Engine Sound<\/h4>\n

The basic 2.0-liter engine\u2019s performance in the MT without Sport Chrono<\/strong> feels sluggish at takeoff even in Sport mode, and it stalls easily if you\u2019re not careful, lol. But once moving, power, torque, and response are all excellent.<\/p>\n

If you can\u2019t tolerate sluggish takeoff, I recommend choosing the 2.5-liter engine in the S grade or higher.<\/p>\n

Personally, I don\u2019t like the engine sound… I prefer the high-pitched sound like the NA-era VTEC.<\/strong> However, a Subaru enthusiast friend loves the 718\u2019s engine sound, so opinions vary widely.<\/p>\n

Next page \u2192 What about the MT evaluation, ride comfort, handling, brakes, maintenance, etc. of the Cayman?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2461 MT \/ Manual Transmission<\/h4>\n

The MT is tough until you get used to it. The clutch is heavy, shifting into reverse is stiff, and there\u2019s a strong force trying to return it to neutral.<\/strong> But once accustomed, it\u2019s no problem.<\/p>\n

The short-throw shift feel is perfect, and you get a great sense of “being in control.” There\u2019s no auto blipper since it\u2019s without Sport Chrono, but it\u2019s perfectly fine for everyday shifting.<\/p>\n

\u2462 Ride Comfort \/ Ride Quality<\/h4>\n

Though it lacks PASM, thanks to the standard 18-inch wheels, the suspension is supple with no unpleasant harshness.<\/strong> I think PASM is only necessary if you want to make an already comfortable 18-inch setup even better, or if you\u2019re doing sporty driving or upsizing wheels.<\/p>\n

\u2463 Handling \/ Brakes<\/h4>\n

Being a mid-engine car with excellent cornering ability, winding roads are its true playground.<\/strong> Even in town, taking each intersection with a bit of speed delivers an unparalleled sense of unity between car and driver.<\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s completely stock without PASM, sports chassis, PTV, or Sport Chrono, the lightness and natural feel without electronic intervention are superb.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The brakes are stock and smaller than those on the 718S, but I don\u2019t think it\u2019s an issue unless you do sporty driving. I\u2019ve never felt the brakes lacking on daily drives or highways.<\/p>\n

\u2464 Fuel Economy \/ Maintenance<\/h4>\n

About 7 km\/L in city driving with Sport mode, and about 10 km\/L on highways with Sport mode.<\/strong> I don\u2019t drive in normal mode, so I can\u2019t say.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s only been two months since delivery, but no issues or repairs so far.<\/p>\n

\u2465 Family and Others\u2019 Reactions<\/h4>\n

\u30fbI haven\u2019t told my family I bought a Porsche because I\u2019d probably get killed (?!), lol.
\n\u30fbMy Subaru enthusiast friend is thrilled every time he rides in it. Apparently, it reminds him of the wild Subaru sound.
\n\u30fbSince I can only have one car, I use it for commuting, and reactions at work range from envy to jealousy.<\/p>\n

\u2466 Favorite Points<\/h4>\n

I love the front mask design. The sharp, slanted headlights give a more aggressive impression than the round headlights of the 911, and the slim indicator lights at the bumper edges create a dynamic and sharp expression compared to the fog-lamp-equipped 987 and 981 models.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Personally, I prefer the normal front mask over the optional Sports Design Package because its moderate ride height and rounded form give a more elegant impression.<\/p>\n

5) Options I Definitely Want on My Next Porsche<\/h3>\n

\u30fb“GT Sport Steering Wheel”<\/strong>
\n\u2192 Since it\u2019s a sports car, a smaller steering wheel is definitely better…<\/p>\n

\u30fb“Sports Tailpipes”<\/strong>
\n\u2192 I\u2019ve recently started thinking the standard trapezoidal tailpipes look a bit uncool.<\/p>\n

6) Concerns<\/h3>\n

Many automotive critics have already mentioned this, but it\u2019s definitely the engine sound.<\/strong> Personally, I find it too rough and somewhat vulgar.<\/p>\n

7) Overall Impression<\/h3>\n

Porsche is often said to rely on option sales, and if you add all the comfort options as a luxury car (a dated term) or all the performance options as a circuit machine, it certainly gets expensive.<\/p>\n

However, even with just the bare minimum options on a basic 718 like mine, you can fully experience the essence of Porsche (dynamic quality).<\/strong><\/p>\n

If I were to describe the basic 718 MT with no performance options, it\u2019s like “the ultimate bread & butter made with pure ingredients” or “simple is best.”<\/p>\n

8) What Porsche Means to You<\/h3>\n

A first-class product, precisely crafted and high-performing by master craftsmen<\/p>\n
