My husband wrote this article, so if you\u2019re interested, please take a look.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Porsche 911, Early 991 Model<\/h3>\n<p>Recently, I was able to borrow a <strong>bare-bones early 991 Carrera 911<\/strong> as a loaner while my Boxster was in for inspection. Around the same time, I was also fortunate enough to get behind the wheel of a <strong>early 991 Carrera S 911.<\/strong> Having the rare chance to drive both the Carrera and Carrera S from the same era, and with quite different options on each, I made a number of interesting discoveries.  <\/p>\n<p>This time, I\u2019d like to focus on those points in my review.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The early 991 is, for now, the last regular model 911 to feature a naturally aspirated engine.<\/strong> The base Carrera is powered by a 3.4-liter engine, while the Carrera S sports a 3.8-liter unit. Both come with a 7-speed PDK automatic transmission, producing 350ps and 400ps respectively.  <\/p>\n<p>First, <strong>let\u2019s start with the base Carrera.<\/strong> This particular Carrera is quite a rare spec. Key options include <strong>the Cup Aero body kit, PCCB brakes, and a sports exhaust\u2014giving it a very hardcore setup.<\/strong> Yet, the suspension is <strong>standard without PASM.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>So, I want to focus on the combination of <strong>PCCB brakes and standard suspension without PASM<\/strong> in this report.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/6AC2D92D-19FA-4AF3-8D42-26F6F8F61D98-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Early 991 Carrera\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20762\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20762\" class=\"size-large wp-image-20762\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/72521A3B-E722-4B86-867C-84F9039B6722-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 991 Carrera with Cup Aero\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20762\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Genuine Cup Aero body kit installed<\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Early 991 Base Carrera<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>3.4L engine in the base Carrera is the same as the one in our Boxster GTS.<\/strong> However, power is 350ps here, 20ps more than the Boxster\u2019s 330ps.  <\/p>\n<p>First, <strong>the engine sound when started is deeper and a bit quieter in the 911.<\/strong> Shifting the PDK into D and setting off, the engine feels heavy and a bit restrained. This particular car has only 25,000 km on the clock, but perhaps due to a long loaner life mostly spent in city driving, the engine hasn\u2019t been revved much.  <\/p>\n<p>It feels like something is caught in the throat\u2014its natural, beautiful voice isn\u2019t fully unleashed, and it\u2019s not quite in top form. <strong>This reminded me once again that an engine really needs to be revved moderately to stay healthy.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20699\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/5311975E-C6CD-4E96-A03F-17B66E8545D3-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 991 Early Sports Exhaust\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Compared to the Boxster\u2019s curb weight of 1360kg, the 911 Carrera weighs about 1430kg, roughly 70kg heavier. Despite the 20ps power difference, <strong>the 911\u2019s initial response feels a bit milder.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>The PDK shifts smoothly with minimal shock, and the standard suspension without PASM transmits small bumps at low speeds. I\u2019ve experienced several PASM-less suspensions before, and while the degree varies by model, <strong>the biggest difference compared to PASM-equipped suspension is the ride comfort at low speeds.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>So, <strong>once you get up to a certain speed, the difference becomes less noticeable.<\/strong> This car\u2019s ride also became flatter and more composed as speed increased.  <\/p>\n<p>By the way, this car also features PCCB brakes. <strong>PCCB not only delivers excellent braking performance but also significantly reduces unsprung weight.<\/strong> Compared to cast iron brakes, PCCB weighs about one-third to half as much, which is said to greatly influence ride quality.  <\/p>\n<p>However, in this case, <strong>the combination of standard suspension without PASM and PCCB was, personally, not very ideal.<\/strong> While I could feel the lightness at the wheels, it seemed to backfire by reducing the plushness that weight usually provides.  <\/p>\n<p>Of course, this is less noticeable at higher speeds, but at low speeds, the ride comfort seemed negatively affected. Porsche\u2019s option combinations are truly deep and complex.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/5A25E33F-B7F2-4A25-8B38-85AB4555EF52-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 PCCB Brakes\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, <strong>PCCB brakes deliver outstanding stopping power and control.<\/strong> In fact, I think these brakes work even better at low speeds than those on my GT3. On winding roads, the braking margin is incredible. Truly, these brakes are worth their high price.  <\/p>\n<p>Honestly, the difference in braking performance compared to standard brakes is huge.  <\/p>\n<p>Trying a few corners on my usual winding road, <strong>I noticed a bit more body roll.<\/strong> This feels different from PASM-equipped cars. With PASM, the body rolls but feels like it\u2019s holding firm from the start. Without PASM, the body rolls slightly at first, then stops rolling at a certain point, holding steady through the corner.  <\/p>\n<p>Of course, there\u2019s no sense of instability or difficulty controlling the car, but the difference in behavior is interesting to compare.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/7DDE22B3-68F5-42EB-8432-3F429B8A0144-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Driving Porsche 911 Carrera\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Revving the engine on a straightaway, <strong>you really hear the beautiful sound unique to a naturally aspirated engine.<\/strong> Once the throat clears, the engine finally lets out its true roar, though it sounds a bit deeper than the Boxster\u2019s. This is likely influenced by differences in engine placement and exhaust length.  <\/p>\n<p>Still, fundamentally they sound quite similar. The 20ps power difference is not something I can really feel. The power delivery feels almost the same.  <\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/porsche-911-991-s\/2\/\"><strong>Next page \u2192 Porsche 911 (Early 991) Carrera S Review: Differences from Base, Engine Details<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage-->  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Porsche 911 (Early 991) Carrera S<\/h3>\n<p>Next, I drove the Carrera S. This one has over 50,000 km on it and comes equipped with <strong>PASM, sports exhaust, and the Sport Chrono Package.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20677\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/8C69C8AB-BEE2-408E-A0D2-3FC95C9C9AAF-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 991 Early Carrera S\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/24DBB18F-E801-4556-888A-60FCF56F4D05-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 991 Early Carrera S Rear View\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>The engine revs very well and it\u2019s hard to believe it has over 50,000 km. <strong>How you drive really matters.<\/strong> You can\u2019t judge a used car by mileage alone. <strong>The engine\u2019s responsiveness is smooth, and the low-speed torque in town is definitely stronger in the Carrera S.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not saying the base Carrera lacks anything, but in the base model, switching to Sport mode and downshifting one gear in town makes driving very fun. On the other hand, <strong>the Carrera S has such thick low-end torque that you can enjoy driving in town without needing to do that.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>My first impression of this Carrera S was that <strong>the ride comfort is excellent.<\/strong> It feels plush from low speeds and has outstanding road-holding. From the moment it starts rolling, it\u2019s very smooth and pleasant.  <\/p>\n<p>This car was fitted with <strong>20-inch Carrera Classic wheels and PZERO tires, paired with the standard S brakes,<\/strong> which is definitely one of the foolproof combinations.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20683 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/E95E97A6-2E23-41B7-8C98-C1E6F44BBEE3-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 991 Early Carrera S Carrera Classic Wheels\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>The cornering behavior is very natural\u2014not too sharp, not too soft. <strong>It\u2019s easy to drive rhythmically, and the strong road contact gives a reassuring feeling even when pushing hard.<\/strong> Honestly, this car\u2019s level of refinement made me personally think, \u201cI want this one.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>The only downside I noticed was <strong>the shift shock during upshifts at high revs in Sport Plus mode.<\/strong> For a PDK, the shock was a bit larger than on the 25,000 km base Carrera.  <\/p>\n<p>At low to mid revs, it was very smooth, so this was a minor disappointment. I suspect this difference comes from the 50,000 km mileage and how the car was used.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/306E73C5-D65A-4DA3-82B8-994E9BB97E93-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Finally, let me report on the seat differences. Both cars had standard sports seats, but the <strong>base Carrera had 4-way partial leather seats, while the Carrera S had 14-way fully leather seats.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>Comparing them, you can definitely feel the price difference. Although the seat shape is the same, the material quality affects both appearance and feel. The difference between 4-way and 14-way is clear in terms of support and comfort. At first, I even mistook the Carrera S seats for Sports Seat Plus.  <\/p>\n<p>That said, I should clarify that since these were compared side-by-side, the difference is noticeable. <strong>If you don\u2019t compare directly, I think you wouldn\u2019t feel much dissatisfaction with the 4-way seats.<\/strong> Incidentally, the partial leather seems more durable.  <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20694\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20694\" class=\"wp-image-20694 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/FAC9D4EB-3EB0-4877-8426-C2147998FD60-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"991 Carrera 4-way Sports Seat\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20694\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">991 Carrera 4-way Sports Seat (Partial Leather)<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_20679\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20679\" class=\"wp-image-20679 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/D2054D6D-5AB0-4A36-8890-EFF8E752C613-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"991 Carrera S 14-way Sports Seat\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">991 Carrera S 14-way Sports Seat (Leather)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Having directly compared the Carrera and Carrera S, <strong>I found the engine power difference was less noticeable than I expected.<\/strong> On a circuit or the Autobahn, you\u2019d probably feel it more, but on public roads, it mostly comes down to the thickness of low-end torque in town driving. So, I don\u2019t think you need to worry too much about the power difference.  <\/p>\n<p>More importantly, <strong>you should choose based on options like PASM, PCCB, and the Sport Chrono Package.<\/strong> There aren\u2019t many articles comparing Porsche options, so information is scarce and it can be difficult.
