Please take a look if you\u2019re interested.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Test Drive<\/h3>\n<p>The other day, when we went to the dealer for an oil change on the GT3, we were told there was a <strong>718 Cayman GTS 4.0 test drive car available<\/strong>. Although it was a short drive, he got behind the wheel and I\u2019d like to share a brief review.  <\/p>\n<p>Until now, the 718 lineup only had turbocharged 4-cylinder models, but this time, <strong>starting with the Spyder and GT4, the GTS also got a naturally aspirated 6-cylinder model, the GTS 4.0<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p>This 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine shares bore and stroke dimensions with the 4.0-liter NA engine in the GT3, but its lineage is different. It appears to be based on the 9A2 Evo engine found in the 911 (992 generation). To meet recent environmental standards, it also features cylinder deactivation and, although the current Japanese spec doesn\u2019t have a GPF filter, it\u2019s an engine that\u2019s environmentally and fuel-economy friendly.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The test car was a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 painted in Aventurine Green<\/strong>. It was the first time I\u2019d seen Aventurine Green on a 718 body, and it looked really sharp. The optional Satin Aurum wheels matched the body color perfectly.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20654\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/DAF7264F-66A1-45A2-9575-B163975EBD6B-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GTS 4.0\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/9FD77D11-3EA6-4DE6-8A4B-949025CE502E-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche Satin Aurum Painted Wheels\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>The driver\u2019s area is the familiar 718 interior, continuing the lineage from the 991 and 981. There was no discomfort in operation. When starting the engine, it roared with a deep bass \u201cVroom!\u201d <strong>As expected from a 4.0-liter, the exhaust note is lower than the 981 generation GTS and slightly higher pitched than the 4-cylinder turbo 718 GTS<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p>The clutch weight was neither heavy nor light, just right. <strong>Slightly lighter than the 981, but a bit heavier than the 991 GT3. The clutch engagement is very clear and easy.<\/strong> When you slowly release the clutch, the car automatically raises the idle speed, so even beginners in manual transmission should stall much less.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20660\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/F0D72C6D-ACAD-4746-88E4-92FCD566A99A-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Interior\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The torque from a standstill is much stronger than the 981 GTS or 991 GT3.<\/strong> This makes driving very easy and comfortable. It\u2019s so effortless that it feels like driving an automatic, allowing you to navigate city streets with ease.  <\/p>\n<p>Especially in 1st and 2nd gear, even if you suddenly lift off the accelerator, you hardly feel engine braking or back torque. Situations that can be jerky in a GT3 manual are very smooth here. This would also make the passenger\u2019s ride more comfortable.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">718 Cayman GTS 4.0: Sport Mode and More<\/h3>\n<p><strong>After driving in Normal mode for a while, the cylinder deactivation is almost unnoticeable.<\/strong> Like with the Panamera Turbo, there\u2019s no indicator, so you might guess it\u2019s active when the engine sound changes slightly. Either way, if the driver is focused on driving, they probably won\u2019t notice anything.  <\/p>\n<p>Regarding the engine sound, from startup through idle and takeoff, <strong>it\u2019s fairly loud and reminds me a lot of the 992.<\/strong> But once driving, the exhaust note doesn\u2019t assert itself much. Instead, <strong>when cold, the whirring gear noise is more noticeable inside the cabin<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p>Between 3000 and 4000 rpm, the engine and exhaust sounds become more prominent, but at the commonly used 2000 rpm range, the exhaust note feels a bit quieter compared to the 981 GTS.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20663\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/1D4D7D76-FFEA-4EC1-9494-A892D139562C-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Sport Response Switch\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>When switching to Sport or Sport Plus and pressing the accelerator hard, the naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six awakens with incredibly sharp response. <strong>This responsiveness feels 10-20% sharper than the 981 GTS.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>The rev counter needle quickly passes through the mid-range and heads toward the high rev zone. The acceleration and G-forces are intense, delivering a very fast sensation. The engine and exhaust sound at this time are fantastic\u2014truly the hallmark of a naturally aspirated flat-six. Many will likely think, <strong>&#8220;This is it!&#8221;<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><strong>The brake feel is also excellent.<\/strong> You can slow the car smoothly with subtle foot pressure, and downshifts are crisp. The auto-blip in Sport mode feels great. The engine growls and the revs match perfectly. <strong>The blipping and backfire sounds are restrained, not as flashy as in the 981 era.<\/strong> Those who prefer a more refined, natural exhaust note will appreciate this.  <\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/718-cayman-gts-4-0-testrive\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 718 Cayman GTS 4.0: Engine, Ride Comfort, Overall Impressions&#8230;<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage-->  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Engine Feel, Ride Comfort, and More<\/h3>\n<p>By the way, regarding engine characteristics, <strong>I want to compare it with the NA 4.0-liter GT3 engine that shares the same bore and stroke. The conclusion is that the feel is &#8220;quite different.&#8221;<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>First, the low-end torque is stronger in the GTS 4.0. It\u2019s overwhelmingly easier and more manageable to drive in the city. The engine sound differs too: while the GT3 engine has mechanical noise and a powerful, piercing sound, <strong>the GTS 4.0\u2019s sound is more exhaust-focused with a bit of a rhythmic beat.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>And <strong>the biggest difference is in the high rev range.<\/strong> The GTS 4.0 engine revs very well, but the GT3 engine accelerates its revs exponentially as it climbs higher, even evoking a sense of awe or fear.  <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the GT3\u2019s signature performance shining through.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20661\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/169976F8-7E07-44A0-8CB1-23CB3F9FB327-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Gauges\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>As for handling, I didn\u2019t get to test it much this time, but <strong>it basically follows the tradition of previous 718 models.<\/strong> It feels more planted than the 981, especially with a firm rear grip.  <\/p>\n<p>If I had to add one more point, <strong>I\u2019d say the ride comfort on this GTS 4.0 felt notably good.<\/strong> From the start, it\u2019s smooth yet firm, with no harshness on city roads.  <\/p>\n<p>Among the Porsches I\u2019ve experienced recently, <strong>this ride comfort ranks in the top one or two.<\/strong> The suspension feels tightened but rides on high-quality rubber bushings. Yet it\u2019s not soft or mushy at all, so there\u2019s no sense of insecurity\u2014just excellent chassis balance.  <\/p>\n<p>While the name &#8220;GTS&#8221; might suggest a sportier, harder ride, <strong>the previous 981 GTS was also very comfortable.<\/strong> Adding to that, the GTS 4.0\u2019s engine and transmission are very easy to handle, so in terms of ride quality, it feels more like an &#8220;S Plus&#8221; grade than a traditional &#8220;GTS.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-20665\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/5DFA4E78-6960-4750-A03A-46401F4C233A-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Test Drive\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>After driving the GTS 4.0, <strong>if any readers are considering their first Porsche purchase, I would absolutely recommend this model.<\/strong> It\u2019s packed with the best qualities of recent Porsches.  <\/p>\n<p>If I were to compare it to a fine dining experience, it might be like a seasonal special menu\u2014using popular ingredients to create a flavor that appeals to a wide audience.  <\/p>\n<p>Of course, for those seeking a spicier dish, the Spyder and GT4 are also available.  <\/p>\n<p>This time, Porsche threw the ball right into the catcher\u2019s mitt at the center of the plate. <strong>A naturally aspirated 6-cylinder, mid-engine, high power, attractive sound, honest handling, and easy drivability\u2014all combined in one sports car.<\/strong> The GTS 4.0 is truly impressive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Recently, my husband had the opportunity to test drive the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, and he wrote down his impressions.
