My husband was just as intrigued: he placed his order as soon as preorders opened, and when the camera arrived at our home the other day, I asked him to share his thoughts. Read on for his review.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Why I Chose the RX100M7<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m a car enthusiast, but I\u2019m no camera expert. So please read this as the perspective of an amateur who enjoys photographing cars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019d been using the RX100M3 (M3) for years<\/strong> and was starting to think about an upgrade. Then I heard Canon\u2019s G7 X Mark III would have an external microphone input, so I preordered one.<\/p>\n<p>But then came news that <strong>Sony was releasing the RX100M7 (M7)<\/strong>. I decided that was the camera I wanted instead and canceled my G7 X Mark III preorder. <strong>I placed an order through the Sony online store on the very first day preorders opened, and it arrived at our home on August 30.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13705\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_4719-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" biggest reason I chose the <strong>M7 over the M5 or M6 was its external microphone input.<\/strong> The other deciding factor was its <strong>blazing-fast autofocus, said to be inherited from the \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">External Microphone Input<\/h3>\n<p>As a car enthusiast, I want to capture more than just photos\u2014I also want to record <strong>video and the sound of the engine clearly.<\/strong> Every camera has a built-in microphone, of course, and you can record engine sounds with it. But wind noise can be overwhelming, and the limited frequency range means the audio often sounds nothing like the real engine. To my ears, the results just aren\u2019t enjoyable to listen to.<\/p>\n<p>So I started looking for a compact digital camera that could use an external microphone. There were hardly any options. My M3 couldn\u2019t connect to an external mic either, and that was one thing I\u2019d always found frustrating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The RX100M7 adds an external microphone input while keeping almost the same compact size as its predecessors.<\/strong> For me, it was the camera I\u2019d been waiting for.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13631\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_8036-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"RX100M7 microphone input\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Blazing-Fast Autofocus<\/h3>\n<p>Fast autofocus matters when you\u2019re photographing cars in motion, but it\u2019s just as useful at home, where we have two children, ages two and five. <strong>They\u2019re always on the move and rarely sit still.<\/strong> In situations like that, autofocus speed makes a big difference.<\/p>\n<p>With my old M3, the focus often couldn\u2019t keep up, and I ended up with a lot of missed shots. The M7\u2019s autofocus is seriously impressive. <strong>It doesn\u2019t get every shot right, but it captures sharply focused photos far more often.<\/strong> I\u2019d even say it performs as well as\u2014or perhaps better than\u2014the \u03b17 III I use as my main camera.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13716\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_1019-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The eye autofocus and face-detection autofocus are also incredibly useful. <strong>The moment a child turns toward the camera, focus snaps onto their eyes, producing crisp, sharply focused photos.<\/strong> I\u2019d recommend this camera to any parent who wants to capture their children growing up.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Lens Performance and Image Quality<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The RX100M7 has a 24\u2013200mm equivalent zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f\/2.8\u20134.5.<\/strong> Compared with the RX100M3\u2019s 24\u201370mm f\/1.8\u20132.8 lens, it\u2019s a little slower, but offers a much longer zoom range.<\/p>\n<p>When I upgraded from the M3 to the M7, I was a little concerned that the slower lens would mean less background blur at maximum aperture. In practice, that hasn\u2019t been an issue at all. In fact, <strong>the M7\u2019s longer zoom lets me take photos with even more pronounced background blur than I could with the M3,<\/strong> which I\u2019m very happy with.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_8043-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In terms of fine detail, I\u2019d say the image quality is about the same as the M3. The colors, however, seem even more vivid, so even an amateur like me can get photos that look great.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_7969-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 (964)\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13752\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_0708-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"Porsche 991.2 GT3 decal\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Compared with the \u03b17 III mirrorless camera I use as my main camera, the M7 shows a little more visible noise when shooting indoors at night or in dim light, especially when you zoom in on the image. And when photographing people, the \u03b17 III captures finer detail. At this level, that may simply be the limit of a compact digital camera.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, <strong>for everyday snapshots, the image quality is among the best you\u2019ll find.<\/strong> If you\u2019re serious about creating photographs as works of art, I\u2019d recommend a larger interchangeable-lens camera. But if that\u2019s not what you\u2019re after, the M7\u2019s image quality should be more than satisfying.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Video Performance<\/h3>\n<p>Honestly, the video quality is excellent. Plenty of YouTubers have already reviewed it in depth, so I\u2019ll leave the detailed analysis to them. The image stabilization is impressive, too\u2014among digital stabilization systems, I\u2019d say it comes close to the smoothness of the GoPro Hero7.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13649\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DSC09362-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>GoPro Hero7\u2019s stabilization is fantastic.<\/strong> Lately, I\u2019ve often used it on its own because bringing a gimbal along feels like too much trouble. If I rated the GoPro\u2019s stabilization a 10, <strong>I\u2019d put the M7 at around a 7 or 8.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Footage shot while walking looks smooth and natural, with almost no distracting shake. However, <strong>it seems less effective at handling vibration when filming from the passenger seat of a car.<\/strong> The stabilization can look a little jerky, and occasionally the framing suddenly shifts.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Sony LCJ-RXK Genuine Jacket Case<\/h3>\n<p>When I bought the M7, I also picked up <strong>Sony\u2019s genuine jacket case and shooting grip.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, here are my thoughts on the genuine case. I couldn\u2019t find many detailed reviews, so I bought it partly to try it out for myself\u2014and it turned out to be pretty good.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13642\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_8025-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"LCJ-RXK\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The exterior is synthetic leather, but it doesn\u2019t feel cheap at all, and the construction is sturdy. The case covers the whole camera, offering plenty of protection against scratches.<\/p>\n<p>To take a photo, just undo the button and open the front cover. While you\u2019re shooting, a second button keeps the cover attached to the bottom of the case, so there\u2019s no need to set it down somewhere.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_8030-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"LCJ-RXK\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13640\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_8028-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also <strong>very convenient that you can use a tripod, charge the camera, and connect an external microphone without removing the case.<\/strong> Before buying it, I expected it to be less practical. Having used it, though, I\u2019m very pleased with how convenient and functional it is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-13635\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_8032-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Sony VCT-SGR1 Shooting Grip<\/h3>\n<div id=\"rinkerid13712\" class=\"yyi-rinker-contents  yyi-rinker-postid-13712 yyi-rinker-img-m yyi-rinker-catid-27 \">\n\t<div class=\"yyi-rinker-box\">\n\t\t<div
