Recently, I wrote an article about the delivery of our Cayenne E-Hybrid<\/a>, and my husband has now written about why we chose the hybrid model among the Cayenne lineup in the first place<\/strong>. I\u2019ll share impressions on driving performance, comfort, and fuel economy after we\u2019ve put more miles on it.<\/p>\n

Initially, We Were Looking for a Base Cayenne<\/h3>\n

The decision to purchase the Cayenne E-Hybrid came about quite quickly this time, so I\u2019d like to talk about how we got here, why the Cayenne, and why the hybrid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As I briefly mentioned in the previous Cayenne delivery<\/a> article, we had no intention of buying a hybrid model initially. If we were to buy a Cayenne, we planned to go for the base (standard) model.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The reason was that after owning a Panamera Turbo for three years, we fully understood the overwhelming power of the ‘Turbo,’ so we decided that next time, it would be either the base or S model.<\/strong> After comparing the Cayenne S and the base model, we found that the base model suited our needs better,<\/strong> and the powerful engine sound and feel of the S could be covered by other cars in our garage.<\/p>\n

However, when looking at the stock base Cayennes, many had traditional steel spring suspension and some didn\u2019t even have PASM.<\/strong> Since I prioritize driving performance above all else, I\u2019m not too concerned about exterior or interior details, but I do care a lot about these options.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So, I asked the dealer, “Could I test drive a base Cayenne with steel springs?<\/strong>” They said there was no base Cayenne available, but there was a hybrid Cayenne with steel springs, so I was able to test drive that.<\/p>\n

Test Driving the Hybrid Cayenne<\/h3>\n

To be honest, I wasn\u2019t planning to choose the hybrid model because it\u2019s nearly 300kg heavier,<\/strong> and I was worried it might feel sluggish compared to other grades.<\/p>\n

On the day, facing the test car, I wanted to focus on ride comfort, so unusually, I sat in the rear seat and asked our sales rep, Mr. H, to drive while “trying to go over ruts and rough surfaces as much as possible.<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As soon as we started moving, I couldn\u2019t help but say, “So smooth!<\/strong>” Even from the first roll of the tires, I could tell the difference. The rolling felt gentle and refined, combined with the quietness of the electric motor, creating a luxury car feel that\u2019s quite unlike a Porsche.<\/strong>(I don\u2019t think of Porsche as a ‘luxury car’ but rather a ‘high-performance car.’)<\/span><\/p>\n

In stop-and-go city traffic, even when going over bumps and uneven roads, the rear seat movement was minimal. Of course, as an SUV with a higher ride height, it\u2019s not as flat as a Panamera, but I thought the rear seat movement was quite low.<\/p>\n

I even felt that the rear seat ride was smoother than the air suspension Cayenne S Coupe I had ridden before.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why? I imagine it\u2019s partly because the hybrid model carries a 138kg battery in the rear. Generally, SUVs are designed with heavy loads in the rear, so the rear suspension tends to be a bit stiff. This can cause the rear to bounce or sway when carrying fewer passengers.<\/p>\n

However, this Cayenne seems to benefit from the battery weight, making the rear seat ride feel very composed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Later, I sat in the driver\u2019s seat and took the wheel myself. When I gently pressed the accelerator, the tires started rolling just as smoothly as the pressure I applied. It was the same incredibly smooth rolling sensation I felt in the rear seat.<\/p>\n

After driving a few dozen meters, the difference became even clearer. The motor is very quiet, and the torque delivery is excellent.<\/strong> Driving in E-Power mode using only the electric motor to keep up with city traffic was effortless and frustration-free.<\/p>\n

Even merging onto the highway, the motor alone provided enough acceleration. Of course, if you press the accelerator firmly past the pressure point in the middle of the pedal, the V6 engine wakes up, delivering power to reach 0-100 km\/h in just under 5 seconds anytime.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I was amazed, thinking, “What is this…?<\/strong>” When I think of hybrids, I imagine the strange accelerator feel of Japanese hybrids that don\u2019t correlate well with speed, but this was completely different.<\/p>\n

While I also admire the thick low-end torque of the latest European diesel engines, it pales in comparison to the electric motor. The overall feel is so refined and natural to drive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n

Tiptronic and the Hybrid System<\/h3>\n

To add more, the synergy between the Cayenne\u2019s Tiptronic automatic transmission and this hybrid system is outstanding.<\/strong> I have always highly rated the new Cayenne\u2019s 8-speed Tiptronic for its smoothness and quick shifts, comparable to the latest BMW automatics.<\/p>\n

This transmission really shines in the hybrid model. The motor in the Cayenne E-Hybrid uses the transmission. For example, our Nissan Note e-Power NISMO doesn\u2019t have a transmission and only has one gear, so there\u2019s no concept of shifting.<\/p>\n

However, in the Cayenne, the motor transmits power to the wheels through the 8-speed Tiptronic.<\/strong> So even when driving on motor power alone, the gears shift from 1st to 2nd and so on. During this, the already smooth Tiptronic shifts become even smoother.<\/strong> You can\u2019t feel the shifts at all. This is probably thanks to the motor\u2019s ability to instantly control output.<\/p>\n

The shifts are truly seamless, making city driving very comfortable.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, when you press the accelerator hard and the engine kicks in alongside the motor, you might expect some shift shock, but the Tiptronic cleverly absorbs these sudden torque changes.<\/strong> The engine revs rise slightly, and the Tiptronic adjusts torque perfectly to deliver smooth power.<\/p>\n

The coordination between the engine, Tiptronic, and motor is incredibly smooth. So much so that unless you consciously watch the tachometer, you won\u2019t notice when the engine starts or stops while focusing on driving.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Finally, the deciding factor was the driving performance of the Cayenne Hybrid.<\/strong> While its top speed is lower than the S, it beats the S in 0-100 km\/h acceleration, boasting 462 PS and an impressive 700 Nm of torque from 1000 rpm. Plus, it\u2019s 1.24 million yen cheaper than the S.<\/p>\n

In the city, you can drive quietly in E-Power mode, but switch to Sport or Sport Plus mode, and the Cayenne transforms dramatically.<\/strong> This kind of transformation is quite remarkable even among recent Porsches.<\/p>\n

The motor, which used to work mainly for fuel efficiency, now assists performance.<\/strong> The 3.0L V6 turbo engine sounds clear and, with motor assistance as the revs rise, it feels like a second-stage turbo is helping out.<\/p>\n

Compared to the S, what stood out most was the strong mid-range torque.<\/strong> The acceleration between 3000 and 5000 rpm feels very powerful and honestly fast. It\u2019s the torque delivery that makes it feel sporty rather than outright power. On the other hand, the S still has the edge in engine sound and high-rev feel.<\/p>\n

This sensation might be better described as \u201cE-Turbo\u201d rather than \u201cE-Hybrid.\u201d I had heard Porsche\u2019s hybrid is more about performance than fuel economy,<\/strong> and now I understand why. The legacy of the 918 and 919 lives on even in the Cayenne.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Next, I tried to find negatives about the roughly 300kg weight increase<\/strong> by pushing the accelerator and changing lanes. Doing this kind of maneuver in an SUV of this class might unsettle some drivers, but the Cayenne changed lanes smoothly as if sliding sideways,<\/strong> showing plenty of composure.<\/p>\n

Mr. H, riding shotgun, said:<\/p>\n

“With other manufacturers\u2019 SUVs, this kind of move might feel a bit unsettling. But the Cayenne? No problem at all.<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

Indeed. Despite being much heavier than a regular Cayenne, this was flawless. Of course, on a circuit or tight winding roads, you might feel the weight difference, but for everyday driving, the handling is more than satisfactory.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I insisted on test driving the hybrid Cayenne twice, and these impressions finally led me to decide to buy. I\u2019m completely impressed by the E-Hybrid\u2019s control system. For our family, who mainly use the car for city and long-distance driving with passengers, this was the perfect grade choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n
