Until now, she had been driving a barebones second-generation Toyota Vitz with almost no options, but with the recent news about accidents involving elderly drivers, my husband and his brother started saying, “We need to get her a car that drives better and has solid safety features.”

After my husband researched various cars day and night, he decided to buy the Nissan Note e-POWER for her. The car was delivered recently, and both my husband and I had the chance to drive it, so today I want to share my impressions.

By the way, the Nissan Note e-POWER my mother-in-law bought is a nearly new car with just 12 km on the odometer, equipped with almost every option except Intelligent Cruise Control:

Grade: e-POWER X

Color: Garnet Red

Tires/Wheels: 185/65R15 88S tires & 15-inch aluminum wheels (15×5.5J)

Manufacturer options:

Intelligent Around View Monitor (with moving object detection) + Intelligent Rearview Mirror (with Around View Monitor display) + Heated door mirrors

Nissan original navigation installation package + steering wheel switches (audio, hands-free phone)

Heated door mirrors + PTC element heater + rear heater ducts + high-concentration antifreeze

LED headlamps (low beam, auto-leveling, projector type, with LED position lamps)

Dealer options:

Door visors

AVIC-RW710 (Pioneer navigation system)

Floor mats

ETC

Drive recorder

Test Driving the Note e-POWER

My first impression when I saw the Note was, “The red body color is really beautiful.” Mazda’s red is also beautiful, but Nissan’s red is stunning too. Also, since it’s an “e-POWER,” the blue line on the front grille adds a nice accent.

The doors felt surprisingly heavy and solidly built. When I opened the door and got inside, the steering wheel, instrument cluster, and center console all felt quite nice in terms of quality.

The Vitz my mother used to drive had light doors, a very plastic-feeling interior, and the meter cluster was mostly painted black except for the speedometer, which gave a “meh” impression. But the Note felt properly made.

While the interior isn’t luxurious, I think it’s important that it uses reasonably good materials. In fact, my mother said, “The inside looks fancier than my previous car, so I’m happy driving it.”

When I started the engine, it made a “whoooosh” sound typical of electric vehicles, and it was very quiet. The shift lever looked like a computer mouse, and I was momentarily confused, thinking, “How do you operate this?” But pushing the lever up puts it in “R,” and down puts it in “D,” so it’s the same operation as a typical car and not difficult.

Once I started driving, I was surprised by the firm suspension. I had once borrowed a Toyota Aqua for a day as a loaner, and its suspension was soft and unstable, making it scary to drive (though it was an older model). So compared to that, the Note’s suspension felt reassuring.

Regarding handling, at first, I found myself making wider turns than intended and had to adjust the steering angle (which makes sense since you can’t corner like a Porsche or BMW here), but once I got used to it, it was fine.

There are three driving modes: “NORMAL,” “ECO,” and “SPORTS.” I first tried NORMAL mode, and both the accelerator and brake felt natural, making for a comfortable drive. The hill in front of my house was no problem when I pressed the accelerator, and there was no feeling of “not moving despite the noise.”

Next, I tried ECO mode. The moment I eased off the accelerator, the brakes engaged immediately, and I thought, “What’s going on?” But this is the “e-POWER Drive” system that allows one-pedal driving.

In both ECO and SPORTS modes, lifting off the accelerator causes strong deceleration, which is handy in stop-and-go traffic or on winding roads where frequent speed adjustments are needed. Indeed, on downhill slopes, I could drive without using the brake pedal, just like engine braking, which was very comfortable.

Driving with one pedal reduces the chance of pedal misapplication, so as someone with elderly parents, this gives me some peace of mind.

Both ECO and SPORTS modes provided sufficient power on regular roads and hills, but I felt a bit like the power was being held back, as if being pulled from behind (though fuel efficiency improves significantly). So, I personally preferred driving in NORMAL mode.

The rear seats are quite spacious—seemingly roomier than the Volkswagen Golf 7 we used to have. My daughters also rode in it and loved the roomy, comfortable space.

When I asked my mother-in-law how she felt about driving it, she said:

“It’s really great. On the highway, where before she couldn’t overtake because of lack of power, with the Note she can easily pass. Also, in eco mode, you can operate it with just the accelerator pedal, so no worries about pressing the wrong pedal. Parking is easier too.”

Well, it’s not like a fantastic Volkswagen Golf that makes you want to drive forever or is super fun to drive (understandable given the price and class), but it’s a well-made car that exceeded my expectations and is more than enough for city driving.

Next, I’ll share my husband’s impressions.

Next page → Husband’s thoughts on the Nissan Note e-POWER

Electric car? Hybrid?

It’s been over 20 years since I last drove a Nissan. Back in my student days, I often borrowed my grandfather’s second-generation Cefiro, which had the then-new VQ engine that was very smooth and easy to handle, and I liked it.

The Nissan Note uses Nissan’s unique e-POWER technology, where a gasoline engine runs solely to generate electricity, which then powers the motor that drives the car.

This is called a series hybrid (the engine is only for generating electricity; the motor drives the wheels), different from hybrids like the Prius. The drive force comes solely from the motor, so you get acceleration and torque feel similar to a full electric vehicle.

Interior and Exterior Quality

In practice, I think the quality-to-cost ratio is good. It’s not luxurious or highly refined, but the door handles are metal, and the seats aren’t just flat “chairs” like many Japanese compacts; they have decent cushioning, firmness, and support, so they qualify as proper seats.

The touchpoints for occupants have proper quality, while other areas are neither good nor bad.

The shift lever is basically a switch, operated like a mouse. Some people might find this odd, but I had no trouble adapting.

The rear legroom is very spacious—much more than many sedans. Adults can sit comfortably back there.

(Trying out the rear seat)

The doors have a nice weight and feel solid, and the closing sound is good. However, the rear doors feel thin and flimsy. This is a common issue in this class of Japanese cars, where rear doors are often skimped on. I understand it’s a cost issue, but I wish they’d improve this.

How Does the Motor Drive Feel?

I started by driving in ECO mode. This mode and S mode have strong regenerative braking, enabling “one-pedal” driving.

When I started driving, the motor’s rpm rose gently relative to accelerator input, giving a smooth acceleration feel. But since it’s a motor, torque is instant, so even on steep hills, it never felt strained. It climbed steadily and smoothly, and I wouldn’t mind driving in this mode all the time.

Next, I switched to S mode (sports). The motor’s rpm rose quickly with accelerator input, making the car feel lighter. It smoothly pulled away from stoplights.

Compared to ECO mode, it felt more powerful, but it seemed the difference was mainly in accelerator response rather than raw power—like choosing between higher or lower energy efficiency.

On winding roads in S mode, the strong regenerative braking meant I hardly needed to use the brake before corners, and the quick acceleration out of corners made for a very enjoyable drive—definitely a highlight of this car.

Finally, I tried NORMAL mode. This mode drives like a conventional gasoline car, with regenerative braking similar to engine braking, so you need to use the brake pedal to stop.

Switching from S to NORMAL mode, I personally felt NORMAL was the fastest and most powerful. In S mode, the strong regenerative braking means easing off the accelerator slightly causes a subtle deceleration, which reduces the feeling of smooth acceleration.

While full throttle in S mode might be faster, in everyday driving, NORMAL mode feels smoother and quicker.

The NORMAL mode drive is truly refreshing. The motor-driven acceleration is smooth and linear, braking and deceleration are natural, and torque instantly returns when accelerating again, making it very stress-free. This is hard to achieve with a gasoline engine.

Before driving, I’d read many comments about how powerful and fast this car is. Compared to similarly priced gasoline cars, it is indeed powerful, smooth, and quick. But it’s not overwhelmingly powerful, so don’t expect supercar-level 0-100 km/h times. (I’m used to driving high-power cars like Porsches, so my perspective might be skewed.)

Still, the instant acceleration feel is very satisfying. For short bursts, it might even beat a Porsche. Especially when the car ahead suddenly stops and you slowly pass and accelerate, it’s smooth and easy to drive.

Next page → Suspension and fuel economy? Husband’s growing desire for the NISMO version…?

Suspension

Next, impressions of the suspension on winding roads and at high speeds. Honestly, I really like this car’s suspension. It’s not the typical soft, floaty suspension common in Japanese cars; it handles firmly.

The steering lock-to-lock is large, so if you’re switching from a Porsche, you’ll feel like you have to turn the wheel a lot to corner. But there’s little mismatch between tire angle and car direction, and my impression was, “This car actually corners quite well.”

At low speeds on rough roads, there’s some rattling, but it’s well within my tolerance. Overall, the ride comfort is good. The body feels rigid, and you get a solid sense of grip. It’s stable at high speeds, and I’d be happy to drive it on long cruises.

What stands out is the stable, flat posture without vertical or lateral sway, and excellent straight-line stability. Many Japanese cars in this class struggle with this, but the Note e-POWER does it well.

It’s not quite as sharp as the Volkswagen Golf 7 I used to own, but it’s close. My mother also said right after delivery, “It’s comfortable even on the highway, and drives well like the Golf you used to have,” so I think her impression wasn’t far off.

Regarding highway overtaking acceleration, there’s no frustrating lack of power. It’s not warp-speed fast, but in most situations, you won’t feel stuck or unable to pass; it’s agile enough for everyday driving. When I asked my mother who drives it daily, she said:

“My old car was so slow and scary that I could only overtake on downhill highways, but now the new car passes smoothly anywhere. I just have to be careful not to get caught speeding.”

Fuel Economy and Other Notes

I drove it in various conditions, mostly city and some winding roads.

The computer shows an overall fuel economy settling around 16–19 km/l. Driving carefully in ECO mode with lots of regenerative braking in the city easily gets you into the 20 km/l range, and on downhill-heavy routes, you can even see 30 km/l. Driving hard on winding roads drops it to around 9–10 km/l.

Regarding the generator engine in the Note e-POWER, it runs in many situations. At slow starts in ECO mode, the motor alone powers the car, but once you exceed a certain speed or press the accelerator more, the engine kicks in.

The engine’s start-up is smooth and unnoticeable during normal driving. In S mode, the engine revs higher, and you hear a humming sound that doesn’t always match vehicle speed. At first, this was a bit distracting, but I got used to it.

If you’re sensitive to engine noise, you might want to consider a higher-grade model like the Medalist, which has more sound insulation. But personally, I have no complaints with the X grade.

I Want the NISMO Version

Initially, when we decided to buy the Nissan Note e-POWER, I thought it was just a decent car with recent safety features and a good reputation, suitable for my mother. But it exceeded my expectations. For this price, it’s a solid choice.

The fuel economy is good, the motor-driven driving is easy, and above all, it drives well. I’ve driven many cars in this class as rental cars for work, and they all tire me out quickly—I wouldn’t want to go on a long tour with them.

But if asked to go on a long tour with this Note e-POWER, I’d be totally fine with it.

It’s such a cost-effective car that lately I’ve started to want more, and I’m honestly curious about the NISMO version. I imagine it would be a blast with a reinforced chassis, suspension, and a more powerful motor. The NISMO version is quite pricey, but used NISMO models hold their value well, so the actual cost might be reasonable.

If I were buying for myself, considering resale value, I’d go for the NISMO.

If I could be greedy, I’d love to see Nissan revive the rear-wheel-drive 180SX or Silvia with this e-POWER system—I’d buy one immediately. Nissan, if you’re reading this blog, please make it happen!
