It was my first experience with a 991 Turbo, and <strong>as expected, the \u2018Turbo\u2019 is on a whole different level compared to the standard models.<\/strong> I\u2019d like to share some thoughts on that here.  <\/p>\n<p>First, let\u2019s clarify what Porsche\u2019s \u2018Turbo\u2019 really means.  <\/p>\n<p>The Porsche \u2018Turbo\u2019 lineage goes back to the 930-type 911 Turbo launched in 1975. It debuted as the flagship of the 911 series and became famous in Japan partly thanks to manga like <strong>Circuit no \u014ckami<\/strong> and <strong>Wangan Midnight<\/strong>. Enthusiasts from a slightly older generation than me often have a passionate love for the 930 Turbo.  <\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19514\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19514\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19514\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/porsche-normal-1280x492.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"492\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">930 Turbo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Nowadays, except for the GT3 variants, all Porsche 911s come with turbocharged engines. In other words, even the base \u2018911 Carrera\u2019 now has a turbo engine.  <\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>these are not referred to as \u2018Turbo\u2019 models<\/strong>, which can be a bit confusing.  <\/p>\n<p>The title <strong>\u2018Turbo\u2019 is reserved exclusively for Porsche\u2019s flagship models<\/strong>. Proof of this is that even the fully electric Taycan\u2019s top trims carry the \u2018Turbo\u2019 name despite having no engine at all.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"About_the_Porsche_911_Turbo_I_Test_Drove\"><\/span>About the Porsche 911 Turbo I Test Drove<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The car I drove this time was the <strong>991 Turbo model born about 40 years after the original 930<\/strong>. Its Agate Grey Metallic body looked flawless, showing no signs of its 5 years and 70,000 km on the clock.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19507\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/096422EC-B5EB-49A6-AD12-C0906D017BEB-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Turbo\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>At the wheels gleamed the ultra-expensive Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), making it easy to mistake this for a deluxe \u2018Turbo S\u2019. The owner told me that although it\u2019s a \u2018Turbo\u2019, they chose options to make it almost identical to a \u2018Turbo S\u2019. So this is a very rare \u2018Turbo\u2019 model indeed.  <\/p>\n<p>The cockpit featured the classic red interior typical of Turbo models\u2014absolutely stunning. The white accents on the instrument panel stood out, creating a luxurious yet sporty atmosphere.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19501\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/3DA7BBF4-8315-4BC5-8F30-F65F459352AB-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Looking at the center console, I was surprised to see Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) included! At this point, it\u2019s basically a \u2018Turbo S\u2019 in everything but name.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19504\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/6AECCA64-C985-4F0B-A964-AAC9DBB9F068-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/84311148-8C81-4392-AB5F-5FF3F6CE2416-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Turbo\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>Starting the engine, it greeted me with a surprisingly gentle roar. <strong>\u201cGwon!\u201d it barked once, with a low tone but not loud volume.<\/strong> While the current 992 models offer a sports exhaust option, the 991 Turbo does not. This reflects the \u2018Turbo\u2019s\u2019 nature\u2014prioritizing a refined and luxurious vibe.  <\/p>\n<p>Once moving, the car\u2019s 383 kW (520 PS) \/ 6000-6500 rpm peak power felt far from aggressive; it started off very smoothly. I\u2019m very sensitive to how a car initially moves and how the tires roll, and <strong>this car moves off with a smooth, thick torque feel.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no sense of torque shortage or abruptness. In normal mode, the PDK transmission shifts eco-consciously through 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears, and even when you press the accelerator lightly, it accelerates smoothly without kicking down.  <\/p>\n<p>This sensation differs somewhat from the 991.2 GTS or the 992 Carrera 4S, which also have turbo engines.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/D7C4B0CA-D884-4163-B073-1104D2FA6934-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p><strong>It has a deep throttle response that resists unnecessary kickdowns<\/strong>, making speed control around town speeds of 40\u201360 km\/h very easy. The accelerator opening and speed increase feel almost perfectly proportional.  <\/p>\n<p>When I asked the owner, \u201c<strong>It\u2019s really easy to drive even at low speeds, isn\u2019t it?<\/strong>\u201d he said he uses this Turbo for his daily commute. Indeed, commuting in this car would be effortless. It\u2019s that easy to drive.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Taking_the_911_Turbo_on_Mountain_Roads\"><\/span>Taking the 911 Turbo on Mountain Roads<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Taking a few corners, I immediately noticed several points where I thought, \u201c<strong>Ah, this is totally different!<\/strong>\u201d <strong>First, the tire contact with the road is phenomenal. The GT3 is amazing, but this feels like a different kind of grip strength.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>The GT3\u2019s ultra-high-performance suspension presses the tires firmly to the road for nimbleness, but the Turbo\u2019s suspension seems to use the car\u2019s weight cleverly to press the tires down. This gives a <strong>pleasant sense of solidity and luxury.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>Pushing the pace a bit through corners, there\u2019s almost no body roll, and the rear feels like it pivots smoothly around. I asked, \u201c<strong>Does this car have rear-axle steering?<\/strong>\u201d The owner replied, \u201c<strong>You can tell! Yes, it does have rear-axle steering.<\/strong>\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>The effect of rear-axle steering in these situations is huge. Combined with the magic roll control from PDCC, it delivers outstanding cornering. The driver doesn\u2019t have to worry\u2014just turn the wheel, and the car corners effortlessly without a hint of strain. The strong grip and four-wheel drive traction mean nothing happens even at fairly high speeds.  <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve driven many 991 911s, but <strong>the biggest difference here is the car\u2019s sheer composure, unmatched by other trims.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19502\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/545B2675-E483-4863-8CDB-D1484AE80D35-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<p>I imagine that if an amateur like me raced a Turbo and a GT3 on the same circuit, the Turbo would definitely be faster. It\u2019s a car that lets you drive fast with incredible confidence and without demanding extra skill or tension from the driver.  <\/p>\n<p>The stopping power from the PCCB brakes is, needless to say, tremendous, making speed control very easy. <strong>The PDK remains sharp as ever\u2014switch to Sport Plus and manual mode, and it snaps through gears with satisfying clicks.<\/strong> I\u2019ve said it many times on this blog, but I believe Porsche\u2019s PDK is a step above other manufacturers\u2019 dual-clutch transmissions.  <\/p>\n<p>In Sport Plus, lifting off the throttle produces a muffled backfire sound. However, it\u2019s very restrained\u2014not the loud roar of the 981 GTS or 991 GTS. It sounds distant from the driver\u2019s seat, and <strong>this volume suits the gentle character of the \u2018Turbo\u2019 perfectly.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>Regarding engine feel and acceleration, I didn\u2019t push it to the redline this time, so I can\u2019t comment on high-rev performance. But as you might expect, the low-to-mid range power is more than enough. I consciously compared it to the 991.2 and 992 Turbo engines, and <strong>the \u2018Turbo\u2019 feels superior in throttle response and low-end torque thickness.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an engine that\u2019s incredibly easy and pleasant to handle.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EB7AAE5F-F41B-4ED8-A5FE-14ED7B9F02F6-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"Porsche 911 Turbo\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/>  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Final_Thoughts_on_the_Porsche_911_Turbo\"><\/span>Final Thoughts on the Porsche 911 Turbo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After driving this \u2018Turbo\u2019, I\u2019m convinced once again that the \u2018Turbo\u2019 is truly special. When I bought my Panamera Turbo, I also compared it with non-Turbo grades and clearly remember feeling the unique ride quality, solidity, and composure only a Turbo can offer.  <\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t about engine power or displacement\u2014it\u2019s about the overall chassis tuning and character.  <\/p>\n<p>The same applies to this 911 Turbo: the difference lies not just in engine power but in the entire car\u2019s and chassis\u2019s character. <strong>I\u2019m naturally a fan of NA engines and would usually choose an NA over a turbo if given the option.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p>However, when it comes to Porsche\u2019s \u2018Turbo\u2019 grade, that preference doesn\u2019t hold. That\u2019s because the \u2018Turbo\u2019 grade offers charms that can\u2019t be explained simply by the presence of a turbocharger.  <\/p>\n<p>Since this test drive, I\u2019ve secretly been playing with the 992 Turbo S configurator quite a bit.
