{"id":37661,"date":"2019-10-18T06:00:31","date_gmt":"2019-10-17T21:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37661"},"modified":"2021-07-28T21:09:36","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T12:09:36","slug":"bmw-run-at-royu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/bmw-run-at-royu\/","title":{"rendered":"I Took My BMW 320i on a Mountain Pass to Feel the Joy of Driving"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">My Partner, the BMW 320i<\/h3>\n<p>Recently, I wrote an article about how my beloved BMW 320i (F30) has gotten so much better compared to when it was first delivered.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"IKbpUEjus9\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/bmw-became-better\/\">BMW\u304c\u3001\u7d0d\u8eca\u5f8c5\u30f6\u6708\u3067\u975e\u5e38\u306b\u3044\u3044\u611f\u3058\u306b\u306a\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f\u4ef6\u3002<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/bmw-became-better\/embed\/#?secret=IKbpUEjus9\" data-secret=\"IKbpUEjus9\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" title=\"&#8220;BMW\u304c\u3001\u7d0d\u8eca\u5f8c5\u30f6\u6708\u3067\u975e\u5e38\u306b\u3044\u3044\u611f\u3058\u306b\u306a\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f\u4ef6\u3002&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30ba\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, my husband took our two kids to the park, so I decided to take this opportunity to <strong>drive the 320i alone on the Royu Driveway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-14852\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_5180-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had driven to Royu before when the 320i was still new, but <strong>back then, I had the kids in the back seat and wasn\u2019t as comfortable with manual driving<\/strong>, so it ended up just being a simple drive through the mountain pass.<\/p>\n<p>But this time, having gotten used to manual driving and being alone, I headed to Royu excitedly thinking, &#8220;<strong>Maybe this time, I can truly feel the joy of driving!<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-14853\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_5182-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On a weekend afternoon, Royu is still busy with family cars and vehicles passing through from Ashiya to Arima. So I waited for the right moment by pulling over to the shoulder and spending some time at the lookout.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-14856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_5184-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-14854\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_5183-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the road cleared, I set off in the BMW 320i, shifting up through 2nd and 3rd gears. The first thing I noticed was the <strong>excellent handling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wow, it really turns well! Was this car always this sharp?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not quite like a Porsche that corners with zero deviation, but the <strong>feeling of the car precisely following the driver\u2019s intentions through the corners<\/strong> was very satisfying. I\u2019ve never driven a classic BMW from the \u201cjoy of driving\u201d era <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(sorry, I\u2019m implying the F30 isn\u2019t quite that)<\/span>, but I imagine that combined with a smooth inline-six engine, it must be a real thrill.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-14859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_5193-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the road from the lookout down to Arima, I experimented with my own driving style, thinking things like, &#8220;<strong>Dropping to 2nd gear here is too much<\/strong>&#8221; or &#8220;<strong>Better to shift up to 4th then back down to 3rd for this corner<\/strong>.&#8221; When I hit a rhythm through a series of curves, it felt fantastic, and I even found myself wishing, &#8220;<strong>I wish these curves would just keep going forever\u2026!!<\/strong>&#8221; lol<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-14860\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_5195-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">What\u2019s Missing in the 320i<\/h3>\n<p>That said\u2026 this 320i (F30) does fall short in suspension and engine sound. I originally bought it with the goal of <strong>practicing manual driving intensively<\/strong>, and since I was buying it myself on a tight budget, it\u2019s a \u201cbase model,\u201d not a sporty trim, and it\u2019s from this era of BMW\u2014so I can\u2019t be too picky.<\/p>\n<p>This 320i is set up quite comfortably, but I think if the suspension were stiffer and more solid, it would feel livelier and more fun to drive. My husband often says, &#8220;<strong>If you change the tires, this car will definitely feel better<\/strong>,&#8221; so maybe I should seriously consider that.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <strong>the engine sound is almost nonexistent<\/strong>, which feels a bit lonely. It was about 13.5\u00b0C on Royu that day, pretty chilly, but <strong>the engine was so quiet that I rolled down all four windows and let my hair fly in the wind<\/strong>\u2014and still barely heard the engine lol.<\/p>\n<p>You can hear a little engine noise if you really push it in 2nd gear, but then again, &#8220;<strong>I don\u2019t really want to rev it that high all the time<\/strong>,&#8221; I thought.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-14851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_5192-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This 320i is a wonderful car for comfortable drives with the family or shopping trips<\/strong>, but maybe it\u2019s just not the right car for Royu. Still, I enjoyed my solo drive, so I\u2019m happy. When I shared my impressions with my husband after returning home, he said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Right? BMWs turn really well and have great handling. The E36 is insanely fun. But if you want to enjoy driving more, like on Royu, why not ditch the current 320i (F30) and get an E36 or an M4 manual? lol<\/p>\n<p>I was like, \u201c-_-\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026No, no, I still have payments to make, and I\u2019m finally getting in sync with this car, so I want to keep driving it for a while.
