The other day, my husband got to drive my younger brother\u2019s Alphard<\/strong>, and he wrote an article sharing his impressions from the test drive. I couldn\u2019t ride along since I was back at my parents\u2019 house for childbirth, but I really wanted to experience the rear seats myself. So, if you\u2019re interested, please take a look below. <\/p>\n

Why an Alphard?<\/h3>\n

My younger brother, who occasionally appears on this blog, apparently bought another car following his recent purchase of a Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T<\/a>. <\/p>\n

This time, it\u2019s a Toyota Alphard.<\/strong> The grade is the 4WD 3.5L Executive Lounge. When I asked him, “Why choose an Alphard this time?<\/strong>” he said they were looking for an SUV for the family and considered the GLS, Defender, Cayenne, and others, but ultimately settled on the Alphard for its great cost performance and spacious comfort. <\/p>\n

Many of my brother\u2019s friends own supercars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis, but after much deliberation, it seems more and more people are choosing the Alphard as their family car these days.<\/strong> Apparently, owning a supercar makes you want something completely opposite for family use. <\/p>\n

Testing the Alphard<\/h3>\n

A few days after delivery, my brother came over to show me the car. The width doesn\u2019t feel that large, but the height is definitely impressive.<\/strong> As someone who usually drives low cars, I was quite surprised. <\/p>\n

We got in right away and took it for a test drive on the Royu Driveway. I doubt many people test an Alphard there, but it\u2019s a must to understand its driving performance. <\/p>\n

Right from the start, what struck me was how incredibly quiet it is.<\/strong> The Alphard seems to thoroughly suppress outside noise. At the same time, the engine sound is noticeable when you press the pedal, and the dry, compressed explosion sound typical of a Toyota engine is actually quite pleasant. <\/p>\n

You hardly hear the exhaust, but the engine\u2019s low rumble is impressively bold. <\/p>\n

When I asked my brother why he chose the 3.5L, he said, “I\u2019ve driven acquaintances\u2019 2.5L and 2.5L hybrid models, but on hills the engine seemed to struggle, and the ride comfort was much better with the 3.5L. Since I\u2019m the one driving, I wanted the better engine feel and power of the 3.5L.<\/strong>” <\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t driven the 2.5L versions, so I can\u2019t really compare, but the 3.5L engine\u2019s feel is certainly not bad and perfectly fine for normal driving. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, what caught my attention was the AT\u2019s control.<\/strong> On a slightly steep hill, even when the engine clearly seemed to be struggling, the transmission tried hard to keep the revs between 2000 and 3000 rpm, which felt sluggish. <\/p>\n

Of course, if you press harder, the gear will drop, but I\u2019d prefer it to downshift earlier and use a higher rev range from the start. <\/p>\n

Looking at the engine specs, the maximum torque is 361Nm (36.8kgf\u00b7m) at 4,600\u20134,700rpm,<\/strong> which is unusually high rev for a modern engine. So it makes sense to use a higher rev range more often. <\/p>\n

I know this isn\u2019t a car to talk about handling, but my impression was that, with a large lock-to-lock steering angle, the car feels like it responds with a slight delay to every input.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

But that\u2019s perfectly fine for this car.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

It\u2019s kinder to the passengers, and the driver can relax completely. The car never pressures the driver to hurry\u2014its handling is very forgiving. <\/p>\n

It naturally tends to understeer.<\/strong> When cornering on the Royu Driveway, you have to brake well before the curve and gently increase steering input mid-corner. So you can\u2019t really push it hard, which leads to smooth driving with low lateral G, a gentle style considerate of the passengers. <\/p>\n

As for ride comfort, I think it\u2019s remarkable. Especially at low speeds around 60\u201370 km\/h, it\u2019s fantastic.<\/strong> It feels like the car is inside a large balloon, with soft suspension and tires gently gripping the road, using the vehicle\u2019s weight to glide smoothly. <\/p>\n

I used to drive an S63 Coupe, which also had a nice ride, but honestly, in town, the Alphard feels more refined.<\/strong> It\u2019s different from the silky smoothness and flatness you get from the perfect roundness of European luxury car tires. It\u2019s hard to describe, but it feels like there\u2019s a high-quality rubber or air layer between the road and the car. <\/p>\n

What impressed me most was passing over the bumpy speed reduction strips designed to prevent speeding. The way it suppresses noise and vibration is incredible.<\/strong> Since I drive over those strips regularly, the difference was especially clear. I think it ranks among the top one or two quietest and smoothest experiences I\u2019ve had. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s the pride of Japanese cars, that\u2019s Toyota for you.<\/strong> This is something they can truly boast about worldwide. <\/p>\n

However, when you press the accelerator and try to be a bit more agile, the character changes drastically.<\/strong> The body roll and sway become quite noticeable, and you can feel the body\u2019s softness. When I pointed this out to my brother, he said, “I feel the same, so I plan to install a full set of TRD reinforcement parts.<\/strong>” <\/p>\n

I wonder what my brother is aiming for with this Alphard (laughs). <\/p>\n

Another impressive point is that the pitch motion front to back feels very minimal. This might be partly because this grade is 4WD and finely controls front-to-rear torque distribution during driving, but the front-to-rear sway is very low.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Many SUVs and minivans have stiff rear suspensions to carry loads, which often makes the rear unsettled and bouncy. But this Alphard behaves very calmly. <\/p>\n

Alphard on the Highway<\/h3>\n

Moving to the highway, I checked how it behaves at higher speeds. At typical cruising speeds in the driving lane, it\u2019s exceptionally comfortable.<\/strong> Especially in heavy traffic on the Hanshin Expressway, the comfort is outstanding. <\/p>\n

The car feels like it\u2019s saying, “Relax more<\/strong>” and “Take it easy<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n

With a Porsche, you always hold the steering wheel firmly with both hands no matter what, but with the Alphard, you find yourself lightly resting your hand at the bottom of the wheel without realizing it.<\/strong> I was surprised myself. <\/p>\n

I never drive like that normally, but somehow the Alphard makes you want to. <\/p>\n

On the way home, there was heavy traffic on the highway, but I felt no stress at all.<\/strong> It\u2019s a very comfortable space to travel in, truly a wonderful vehicle. <\/p>\n

Even when picking up the pace in the passing lane, its straight-line stability is quite good.<\/strong> It drives straight without needing constant steering corrections. Tire noise is well suppressed, making it very comfortable. Even if you enter a high-speed curve a bit fast, it handles it easily, and my impression was, “Oh, it actually drives quite well.<\/strong>” <\/p>\n

However, on closer analysis, the body\u2019s solidity and tire contact feel are lacking.<\/strong> It\u2019s not a car that drives sharply. But why does it still feel stable? I think it\u2019s because it skillfully blocks outside noise and steering feedback, making us feel stable.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The engine power at high speeds is sufficient and won\u2019t cause problems in normal driving. However, on sections like the Shin-Tomei Expressway\u2019s 120 km\/h zone, leading in the passing lane requires consciously keeping the accelerator pressed, as the car tends to slow down aerodynamically. <\/p>\n

One other thing that bothered me on the highway was the brakes. Honestly, they feel weak.<\/strong> For stopping such a heavy vehicle, I\u2019d want higher-performance brakes. The initial response to braking is slow, and it feels like driving with low-friction pads. <\/p>\n

If you imagine a situation where an accident suddenly happens ahead and you have to brake hard while swerving, it\u2019s a bit scary. Since this car carries many family members or friends, I wish more cost was put into the brakes. <\/p>\n

The Alphard\u2019s Rear Seats<\/h3>\n

So far, I\u2019ve talked about driving from the driver\u2019s perspective, but since this is an Alphard, I want to introduce the rear seats as well. This Executive Lounge grade has luxurious two-person seats in the second row, which are truly wonderful.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

There\u2019s more than enough legroom. The ottoman and large seats provide plenty of space even for adult men. The recline angle is quite deep, and while it\u2019s not quite business class on a plane, it\u2019s more comfortable than the Green Car on the Shinkansen.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

The second-row seats are excellent.<\/p><\/div>\n

There\u2019s a TV mounted on the ceiling, and seat ventilation and heating are naturally included.<\/strong> You can freely adjust the seat position with switches at hand. The cup holder placement is also great, making it truly comfortable. If I ever buy an Alphard, I definitely want to sit in the back. The features make you want to. <\/p>\n

By the way, the third row is also quite usable. Even with the second row set in a standard position, there\u2019s plenty of room, and it might be more comfortable than the rear seats of a compact car.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Overall Impression<\/h3>\n

I tested it in town, on winding roads, and on the highway, and I think the Alphard is the best vehicle for Japanese road conditions.<\/strong> Toyota seems to have tuned it perfectly for typical Japanese road speeds. It\u2019s not about \u201cfun\u201d comfort but rather \u201chospitality\u201d comfort\u2014a car that pursues that to the fullest. <\/p>\n

After riding the Alphard, I realized something: when I recently test drove the Mercedes GLS<\/a>, what I really expected was the ride quality of this Alphard.<\/strong> I now think I was hoping for that relaxed, refined, luxurious feel at low speeds. <\/p>\n

This Alphard delivers that level of refinement and luxury. Not an exaggeration\u2014I think it\u2019s even better than an S-Class at typical Japanese city speeds. <\/p>\n

If driving performance is secondary and you want a car that\u2019s simply easy, comfortable, and enjoyable for rear-seat passengers,<\/strong> the Alphard is definitely one of the strongest contenders.
