Hello, everyone! I\u2019m Mina, the editor of \u201cWelcome Home, PORSCHE.\u201d Our Porsche Owners\u2019 File<\/a> series was created in response to readers who wanted to hear firsthand stories from Porsche owners. For installment #20, accent shares the buying story, options, and driving impressions of the 911 Turbo S Exclusive, a rare model limited to just six cars in Japan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n\u30fbPrevious cars: I\u2019ve owned several German cars, but this is my third 911 and my fifth Porsche overall: three 911s, and five Porsches in total<\/strong>.

\n\uff0aAll were Turbo or Turbo S models.<\/span><\/p>\n

1) How I Decided to Buy a Porsche<\/h3>\n

One morning, I was browsing the Porsche website in the U.S. when I came across the 911 Turbo S Exclusive<\/strong>. I hadn\u2019t owned a Porsche for a while, but I remember thinking, \u201cIf this comes to Japan, I\u2019d love to own a Porsche again!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

As soon as the car appeared on the Japanese website, I headed straight to the dealership and put in a reservation. It was limited to just six cars in Japan<\/strong>, so I\u2019d all but forgotten about my reservation when the dealership called to say, \u201cYou can buy one.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

I could hardly believe it. But an opportunity like this might come only once in a lifetime, so I stretched my finances to the limit and went ahead with the purchase.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

2) Options and Specifications<\/h3>\n

You could call it fully equipped. That said, there weren\u2019t many options to choose from in the first place. They included adaptive cruise control, a front-axle lift system, a rear wiper, and Burmester audio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3) The Wait for Delivery<\/h3>\n

I think it was a little over six months from the call saying, \u201cYou can buy one<\/strong>,\u201d to delivery. Limited-edition cars apparently go through a different import inspection process<\/strong>, and it took several months after the car arrived in Toyohashi.<\/p>\n

4) Living With the 911 Turbo S Exclusive: Performance<\/h3>\n

To me, it doesn\u2019t feel any different from the 911 Turbo S (991.2). Whatever the figures may say, I don\u2019t think most people\u2014including me\u2014would notice a major difference from behind the wheel.<\/p>\n

\u2460 Engine and Engine Sound<\/h4>\n

The engine has the distinctive sound of a flat-six<\/strong>. At idle, it\u2019s very subdued, with a dry, lean note. But press the accelerator and that\u2019s another story: the engine roars, and with more than 600 horsepower, the force pins you back in your seat<\/strong> until your mind goes blank.<\/p>\n

Across the rev range\u2014even in town\u2014you can control the engine exactly as you like and call up just the right amount of power.<\/p>\n

If you want to, it\u2019s easy to get the car into a power slide with pinpoint precision. And because torque is continuously sent to the front wheels, bringing it back under control is just as easy\u2014it feels as though an invisible rope is gently pulling the car straight from the front.<\/p>\n

When conditions are right, you can enjoy spirited driving with confidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2461 The PDK Transmission<\/h4>\n

The PDK feels much more refined than the earlier version in my 997.2<\/strong>. Select Sport Plus using the steering-wheel switch, and the shift program transforms into something worthy of a race car.<\/p>\n

It can make you feel as if your driving skills have suddenly improved.<\/p>\n

\u2462 Ride Comfort and Road Manners<\/h4>\n

I think they\u2019re excellent. The ride remains soft and composed at all speeds, while the suspension holds firm when it needs to. The body feels as solid as a safe<\/strong>, giving you a strong sense of security. Every time you go through a corner, you feel connected to the car and confident in what it will do.<\/p>\n

The seats are also superb in every respect\u2014their shape, softness, and support all contribute greatly to the comfort.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2463 Handling and Brakes<\/h4>\n

I think they\u2019re excellent. With no engine over the front axle, there\u2019s less weight on the front of the car<\/strong>, which I believe allows Porsche to use softer spring rates. Animals push off the ground with their hind legs and steer with their front legs; the design seems to follow that same fundamental principle.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In older 911s, you often had to enter a corner with some brake pressure still on, deliberately managing the weight transfer. With a modern 911, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s really necessary anymore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As with any Porsche, the brakes inspire absolute confidence<\/strong>. The car settles evenly onto all four wheels, grips the road, and sheds speed\u2014 that\u2019s how it feels.<\/p>\n

\u2464 Fuel Economy, Maintenance, and Repairs<\/h4>\n

Fuel economy depends on how you drive, but I get around 12\u201313 km\/L on the highway and about 10 km\/L in the intercity driving around where I live. As for maintenance, you can\u2019t even see the engine, and the car seems designed to discourage owners from working on it themselves. I leave everything to the dealership.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t had any repairs so far, but the cost of replacing items such as the PCCB brakes is a concern<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u2465 Family and Other People\u2019s Reactions<\/h4>\n

There was a period when my wife drove the 911 most of the time. She said, \u201cIt goes where you want it to, and you can drive it exactly as you intend. People often give way, too, so it\u2019s easy and relaxing to drive.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

I live in rural Northern Kanto, where you don\u2019t see many 911s. When I stop at a convenience store, children and high school students often get excited, and people at highway rest areas sometimes take a long, close look. I also get approached by people who are even more passionate about Porsche than I am, and I always learn something from them.<\/p>\n

\u2466 Favorite Things About the Car<\/h4>\n

I love everything about it, but if I had to pick one thing, it would be the interior that\u2019s unique to the Turbo S Exclusive<\/strong>. The dotted lines on the headliner and seats echo the exterior design, while the gold stitching adds a vivid accent and brings the whole cabin together.<\/p>\n

I also love reclining the seat, relaxing with my favorite music, and gazing up at the headliner.<\/p>\n

5) Must-Have Options for My Next Porsche<\/h3>\n

I think it comes down to your budget. I considered the carbon-fiber wheels, too, but I need winter tires, so I gave up on them.<\/p>\n

6) Anything I\u2019d Change?<\/h3>\n

If I had to pick something\u2026 maybe that it\u2019s almost too ordinary?<\/p>\n

7) The Verdict<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s \u201cthe very best kind of ordinary.\u201d<\/strong> You can drive it anywhere, anytime. You can even recline the seat and relax in it\u2014it\u2019s a bit like a magic carpet.<\/p>\n

8) What Does Porsche Mean to You?<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve thought about this question a lot. There\u2019s so much to consider: performance, including deceleration; acceleration and jerk; handling; engineering; silhouette; concept; history\u2014the list goes on.<\/p>\n

When I think about the Porsche brand I\u2019ve known since childhood, and ask myself, \u201cWhat is it about this car that I love? Why do I drive it?\u201d<\/strong> I end up wondering, \u201cWhat is a car\u2014or a sports car\u2014in the first place? And what does it mean to love something?\u201d I never seem to arrive at a clear answer.<\/p>\n

For now, though, I\u2019ve landed on this: \u201cA Porsche is a car you don\u2019t need to think twice about.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

If you go to a Porsche dealership, you know you\u2019ll find a great car. There\u2019s no need for an amateur like me to agonize over \u201cthis or that\u201d<\/strong> or compare it with everything else. The profound spirit behind the car, the strength of the conviction running through it, and the experience of seeing and driving what Porsche has brought to life\u2014all of that leaves me speechless.<\/p>\n

My wife drives it, too, and she likes it<\/strong>. But when I get carried away talking about it, she starts yawning. (Laughs.)<\/p>\n

I usually keep it in the tower parking garage at my apartment building, so I only take it out for a short drive now and then. But I carry the key with me everywhere<\/strong>. Just having it with me is good for my mental health.<\/p>\n
