Porsche Track Experience<\/h3>\n

This weekend, my husband will be taking the Master course of Porsche\u2019s driving school, Porsche Track Experience (PTE)<\/strong>, at Fuji Speedway\u2014in a GT3. According to the Porsche Japan website, there are currently seven course levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Level 1<\/td>\nBeginner<\/td>\nWarm Up<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Level 2<\/td>\nElementary<\/td>\nPrecision<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Level 3<\/td>\nIntermediate<\/td>\nPerformance<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Level 4<\/td>\nHigh Intermediate<\/td>\ng-Force Precision<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Level 5<\/td>\nPre-Advanced<\/td>\ng-Force Performance<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Level 6<\/td>\nAdvanced<\/td>\nMaster<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Level 7<\/td>\nVery Advanced<\/td>\nFast Track<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Apparently, three more programs\u2014Levels 8 through 10\u2014were scheduled to be added in 2020. Since becoming a Porsche owner a few years ago, my husband has worked his way up from Level 1, Warm Up, and is now taking Level 6, the Master course<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I took a half-day Warm Up+ program held alongside a Porsche event, and I\u2019m planning to take Level 2, Precision, this November.<\/p>\n

Improving His Driving Skills<\/h3>\n

My husband doesn\u2019t regularly race on track, and he\u2019s not aiming to become a professional driver. So I wondered, why take a course as advanced as Level 6 Master<\/strong>? When I asked him, this is what he said:<\/p>\n

When I\u2019m driving at track days, I notice that a lot of people don\u2019t have the basics down<\/strong>\u2014and that includes me, of course.<\/strong> The people driving recklessly, in a way that might look aggressive at first, often don\u2019t put down very good lap times.
\nBut a long time ago, when I went to watch an F1 race, I was struck by how smoothly the top drivers drove<\/strong>. Schumacher\u2019s driving, in particular, was clearly different, even to an amateur like me. He was incredibly smooth through the corners. And you need solid fundamentals to drive that smoothly<\/strong>, so I\u2019d already decided that if I ever bought a Porsche, I\u2019d take Porsche\u2019s driving school.
\nI\u2019ve driven on track in the Performance course, too, but Master lets you learn at a much more advanced level. I\u2019m really looking forward to it.<\/p>\n

That made sense. I asked, \u201cBut if you\u2019re not going to race, why do you want to take it that far?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

I simply want to become a better driver.<\/strong> I want to drive quickly without putting too much strain on the car. I want to be smooth and fast without sudden steering or braking\u2014without doing anything \u201csuddenly.\u201d If I can drive that way, I\u2019ll be able to go even faster on track, and drive smoothly and quickly on regular roads, too, right?<\/p>\n

Then I asked, \u201cOkay, but what does that get you? What\u2019s waiting for you once you\u2019ve become a better driver? (-_-)\u201d<\/p>\n

Driving feels great when you\u2019re good at it. And you can be gentler on the car, too. Besides, when I decide to do something, I want to see it through to the very end<\/strong>. If I\u2019m going to do it, I want to reach the top. On the other hand, if I\u2019m not interested in something, I don\u2019t bother with it in the first place.<\/p>\n

I see. Come to think of it, that\u2019s exactly how my husband is. (laughs)<\/p>\n

I have no plans to take things that far myself, but I\u2019ll be going along as a guest for the Master course, so I\u2019m looking forward to seeing what the program involves.
