Please take a look if you\u2019re interested.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">911 Carrera 2 (Air-Cooled 964)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Our Porsche 911 Carrera 2 (air-cooled 964 model) has been with us for two years this fall.<\/strong> It has about 66,000 kilometers on the clock. The only issue so far was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/air-cooled-porsche-battery-202006\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dead battery<\/a> recently, but otherwise it\u2019s been running smoothly without any major troubles.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, I\u2019m not particularly interested in classic or vintage cars, but the reason I bought the 964 was because <strong>I wanted to understand air-cooled Porsches when talking about Porsche as a brand.<\/strong> Actually owning and driving it, I was amazed at how <strong>solidly built it is for a car made nearly 30 years ago,<\/strong> and how advanced Porsche was even back then.<\/p>\n<p>Once you discover the charm of air-cooled Porsches like this, <strong>you naturally become curious about what it was like when the car was brand new.<\/strong> Of course, some might prefer to customize with aftermarket parts when replacing components, but <strong>personally, I believe no tuner can surpass Porsche\u2019s Weissach Research Center in overall performance and balance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I decided to <strong>refresh everything with genuine parts and try to bring it as close to new as possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/C23AA64A-90F7-4AD5-A45B-3EB605183540-scaled-e1596624188316-1280x973.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"973\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Bringing the 911 to the shop<\/h3>\n<p>So, I consulted with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/2018\/05\/23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Be-Force<\/a>, the trusted mechanic for this 964. First, they inspected the car and identified parts that should be replaced and those that didn\u2019t necessarily need it. Considering the budget and expected effects, we finally decided to replace the following (omitting minor parts):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Front upper mounts<\/li>\n<li>Complete front shocks<\/li>\n<li>Front stabilizer bushings<\/li>\n<li>Linkage<\/li>\n<li>Complete rear shocks<\/li>\n<li>Rear upper mounts<\/li>\n<li>Rear stabilizer mounts<\/li>\n<li>Stabilizer linkage<\/li>\n<li>Tiptronic mount<\/li>\n<li>Rubber buffers<\/li>\n<li>Tiptronic support<\/li>\n<li>Left and right engine mounts<\/li>\n<li>Tie rod ends<\/li>\n<li>Joint yoke<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>and more.<\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t disclose exact prices, but Porsche classic genuine parts have been rising in cost year by year. <strong>One genuine shock absorber costs about 100,000 yen,<\/strong> so four shocks alone total 400,000 yen. This time, <strong>including labor and other fees, we spent about 1.25 million yen to refresh the suspension.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About two weeks after leaving the car at the shop, I received a call that it was ready, and went to pick it up. Seeing my beloved car after a while, I noticed the ride height was a bit higher. I was told that <strong>the shocks were quite worn out, so installing new shocks naturally raises the ride height.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I asked, &#8220;<strong>Were they really that worn out?<\/strong>&#8221; the Be-Force president casually pressed the removed shocks with his hand and showed me. &#8220;<strong>Normally, they wouldn\u2019t compress with such light force, but these easily do, right?<\/strong>&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19229\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19229\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19229\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/07E38C9E-B130-4261-98C2-34A7340D99DD-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rear and front shocks of the Porsche 911<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Indeed, when I touched them myself, the shocks compressed easily with very little force. I asked, &#8220;<strong>They were that worn? But I didn\u2019t really feel bad ride quality or instability?<\/strong>&#8221; The president replied,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">&#8220;<strong>That\u2019s the amazing thing about Porsche.<\/strong> You\u2019d notice immediately in a normal car. But Porsche is built to still drive well even in this condition. Many customers think their cars aren\u2019t worn out until they replace parts and realize it (laughs).&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>I see. I\u2019ve often heard that <strong>Porsche spends lavishly on parts and design compared to other manufacturers,<\/strong> and this is probably one of those examples.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, the president showed me various parts, saying things like &#8220;This one sagged this much,&#8221; &#8220;This one is really loose,&#8221; and &#8220;This one is distorted,&#8221; and I realized that although the car only has around 60,000 km, <strong>28 years of age definitely can\u2019t be ignored.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19233\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/53220DC9-8C2C-495A-AE24-AD5C37363B38-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/964-maintenance-202008\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 When I actually drove it, I couldn\u2019t help but say, \u201cWow, it\u2019s totally different!\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">A 911 (964) that feels like new<\/h3>\n<p>I picked up the keys and headed home. Driving a few dozen meters on Route 43 in front of the shop, I exclaimed, &#8216;<strong>Wow, it\u2019s totally different!!<\/strong>&#8216; I couldn\u2019t help but say it out loud. I could clearly feel the roundness of the tires. It was the first time I truly felt the tires rolling on this car.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19224\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19224\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19224\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/EDA0917A-6EBE-4062-8EB8-3C50F2464092-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19224\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brand new front shocks<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>It glides smoothly forward.<\/strong> I\u2019d say the sensation is about 20-30% better than before. Even over rough patches or manhole covers, the \u201cclunk, rattle\u201d noises are almost gone.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, while the shocks absorbed impacts reasonably well, on uneven surfaces there was a noise like an airplane passing through turbulent air, but now it\u2019s much quieter. You can hear it faintly from the rear if you listen carefully, but it\u2019s almost nonexistent from the front. <strong>The front\u2019s road contact and smoothness really stand out.<\/strong> Pitching has been greatly reduced, and the vertical movement of my head while driving is much less.<\/p>\n<p>NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) is generally suppressed, and <strong>the 964 suddenly became a very comfortable car.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting from a stoplight and accelerating to overtake, I also felt the improvement here. <strong>The throttle response delay has been significantly reduced and feels much better.<\/strong> This is probably thanks to replacing the engine mounts and Tiptronic mount.<\/p>\n<p>The latest water-cooled Porsches have a feature called PADM (Porsche Active Drivetrain Mount), which stiffens or softens the mounts depending on the driving mode. This makes the car feel sharper and more muscular in sport mode, and it\u2019s a similar feeling here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The car moves as if it\u2019s lighter and leaner, like losing body fat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you might guess, I didn\u2019t head straight home but <strong>immediately went to Royu Driveway, then tested it at Sand Double Crink.<\/strong> Points that weren\u2019t noticeable in town gradually became clear.<\/p>\n<p>First, <strong>corners are easier to drive!<\/strong> Much easier. Before, I had to follow the RR basics carefully\u2014lifting off the throttle to put weight on the front, then applying throttle early to get traction to turn\u2014but now it turns well even if I\u2019m a bit lazy.<\/p>\n<p>And it turns smoothly. Of course, it\u2019s not as easy to drive as the latest water-cooled Porsches, but this makes driving more relaxed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19227\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/1D18240D-F63C-4FCD-A526-03D68F7A78F8-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I also noticed changes mid-corner. <strong>Thanks to stronger front road contact, the car tries to pull in more firmly mid-turn.<\/strong> This is a feeling I often get in the GT3, and now I\u2019m experiencing something similar in the 964.<\/p>\n<p>The Tiptronic shifts feel crisp too. Previously, when holding 2nd gear at high revs and lifting off the throttle, there was a slight backlash feeling and a sudden engine brake effect, but that has been greatly reduced. I\u2019m not sure if it\u2019s thanks to the Tiptronic mount replacement, but <strong>the automatic transmission definitely feels better.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19225\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19225\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/CC862455-A590-4208-A17A-7C8A9B5DCE3D-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The front ride height has risen quite a bit. This is still the lowest setting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the straight stretch of Royu Tunnel, <strong>the improved straight-line stability is clearly noticeable.<\/strong> The car runs straight and sharp. It wasn\u2019t bad before, but here I feel about 10-20% more stability. It makes me want to try a long-distance cruise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19220\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/48B40082-F79B-4581-9FDA-B369C98E5234-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the Royu Esses climbing from Arima side, which is a challenging section for RR cars and especially air-cooled Porsches, <strong>tight narrow corners and steep winding roads.<\/strong> When I first bought this 964, I casually drove here and <strong>was shocked at how poorly it turned.<\/strong> Driving the refreshed 964 here now feels like a completely different experience.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, weight transfer is important in an RR, but the ease of driving is totally different. I can drive more relaxed now.<\/p>\n<p>At Sand Double Crink, I focused on rough surfaces and medium-speed corners. <strong>The front suspension\u2019s vertical movement is definitely reduced.<\/strong> Compared to modern water-cooled Porsches, the ride quality still loses out, but I can clearly feel the suspension working well, making the ride flat and pleasant.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 911 has a heavy rear, the rear suspension is stiff, but the front is lighter and softer. This makes the 911 relatively comfortable for a true sports car, and this refresh really made that clear.<\/p>\n<p>On the way home, I re-evaluated on familiar roads. The difference was obvious. <strong>Ride comfort and ease of driving have improved significantly.<\/strong> Imagining how this 911 drove back in 1992, 28 years ago, felt like a time machine experience.<\/p>\n<p>This refresh cost a fair amount, but I\u2019m really glad we did it. Without it, I might have gone on not truly knowing the real 964. <strong>If you own a classic Porsche and your budget allows, I highly recommend refreshing the suspension.<\/strong> The driver\u2019s satisfaction is high, and more importantly, the car itself seems to come alive and rejoice.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/C091454E-4142-4C2C-88C9-60E906C598C3-1280x853.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, I\u2019m planning a body refresh.
