Naturally, he chose the Note e-power NISMO S as his companion.

It was his first time driving over 1000 km in the Note e-power NISMO S, and I thought there would be things you can only understand on a long trip, so here’s a report on that.

Driving the Note e-power NISMO S from Osaka to Tokyo

It’s been about half a year since the Note e-power NISMO S came to our home. It has only about 4000 km on the clock, and this was only the second real touring trip.

We filled the 41-liter gas tank to full and got on the Meishin Expressway. In the city, we drove in ECO mode with one-pedal driving, but on the highway, we switched to Normal mode.

Through various trials, on highways, driving in Normal mode without sacrificing speed tends to yield better fuel economy than ECO mode with regenerative energy recovery (though it depends on the speed range). Plus, the driving feel is more enjoyable.

Above all, the acceleration response of the e-power system is intense. Especially the motor in this NISMO S delivers a massive 320 Nm of torque from zero rpm, making it incredibly quick. The torque kicks in instantly, which is truly exhilarating.

When you press the accelerator, it surges forward with smooth, seamless acceleration, and during the toll gate dash, it even feels faster than a Porsche up to a certain speed.

Once at cruising speed, we turn on the Intelligent Cruise Control. This adaptive cruise control follows the car ahead and smoothly adjusts speed. The Note’s system is surprisingly good, with very smooth speed adjustments.

This is largely thanks to the motor drive, which can instantly control power—a unique advantage of electric motors.

In short, the Note e-power NISMO S’s behavior on the highway can be summed up as ‘solid and confident’. First, there’s no feeling of power shortage within reasonable speeds, and straight-line stability is very high.

Even at speeds typical of the overtaking lane on the Shin-Tomei Expressway, it runs straight and steady without the usual anxiety or correction steering common in Japanese cars.

Its highway stability is quite high, but on the other hand, wind noise, road noise, and suspension movement make the driver feel the speed more strongly. Compared to European compact cars, this is probably a weaker point.

When following the car ahead at a relaxed pace, the onboard computer’s fuel consumption gauge shows 18–19 km/L, occasionally hitting the 20 km/L range. For those used to eco cars, this might seem poor, but considering the powerful motor, I’m personally very satisfied with this fuel economy.

I think this car offers a great balance between fuel efficiency and driving enjoyment.

Despite being a compact car, the interior is spacious, especially around the rear seats, so even long drives don’t feel stifling. Also, having mostly experienced imported cars’ air conditioning, I’m amazed by the effective and finely controlled air conditioning of this Japanese car, which keeps the cabin very comfortable in any situation. (Well, I guess all Japanese cars are like this.)

At one point, the highway was closed due to an accident, so we had to take local roads, which were very congested. We switched to ECO mode and one-pedal driving.

One-pedal driving is controversial, but I really like it. I wish all cars had it. It’s so comfortable in stop-and-go traffic, allowing you to control the car just by modulating the accelerator pedal.

If you haven’t tried it yet, please give it a go. But you need to drop any mental blocks against Nissan or e-power. After about 30 minutes without prejudice, you’ll get used to it. Even my mother, who’s over 70, adapted quickly and now won’t drive anything else.

Discovering the ease of e-power in Tokyo

We stayed overnight in Tokyo, and the next day had back-to-back meetings, so we moved east and west across the city in the NISMO Note. As someone from Kansai, I’m not familiar with Tokyo’s roads, and even the place names on signs don’t tell me which way to go, so I relied entirely on the navigation system.

I usually drive in Osaka city for commuting, but mostly on highways, so this was my first time driving so extensively in an urban area. Tokyo has a lot of stop-and-go traffic, and since I’m unfamiliar with the roads and unsure about right and left turn lanes, my lane changes were a bit clumsy.

In this situation, the agility of e-power and the ease of one-pedal driving really shine. Whether it’s merging or accelerating to get ahead, the 100% electric motor drive of e-power is truly reliable.

Pressing the accelerator firmly results in instant acceleration and smooth forward movement. The NISMO-tuned chassis handles lane changes effortlessly, quietly, and smoothly. Thanks to strong regenerative braking, the car stops precisely at stop lines without needing to use the brake pedal.

This whole flow is nothing short of comfortable.

That day, we made some wrong exits and took wrong turns, covering quite a distance in Tokyo, and I was reminded just how easy e-power makes urban driving.

Next page → Driving in Okutama and then to Yatsugatake…

Trying out Okutama

The next day we headed home but decided to take a detour. We’ve been to Hakone and Izu around Tokyo quite a bit, so I checked Wata-san’s blog for other suggestions.

The name that caught my eye was “Okutama Loop Road.” I remembered seeing it often in touring blogs from the Kanto area, so we decided to head there first.

We aimed for Uenohara IC on the Chuo Expressway. Despite heavy rain, the YOKOHAMA S Drive tires, which came with the new car, drained water well and made highway driving in the rain comfortable.

Even upon arrival at the Okutama Loop Road, the rain didn’t stop, so we carefully drove the wet winding roads. Fortunately, no other cars were out in such bad weather, so it was almost like having the road to ourselves.

We switched to S mode’s B range, the strongest mode exclusive to the NISMO S, and tackled the corners of Okutama. In this mode, the engine is always generating electricity, instantly sending high current to the motor, delivering fierce response.

Opening the throttle carelessly on wet roads can easily cause wheel spin. Of course, traction control kicks in immediately, so it’s not too risky. The speed and precision of this control are incomparable to gasoline cars.

This is the power of the electric motor. It instantly cuts power and skillfully controls the borderline between spinning and gripping.

Regenerative braking is strong, so you rarely need to use the brake before corners, allowing smooth deceleration and thrilling acceleration out of corners. The more you master regenerative braking, the smoother your driving becomes, and if you drive well, you can reduce pitch (front-to-back body movement), making you feel like a better driver.

On the other hand, if you drive with abrupt throttle on/off, the strong regenerative braking increases pitch, causing jerky driving that can lead to motion sickness.

Therefore, when driving e-power, it’s better if you can smoothly press and slowly release the accelerator rather than just on/off.

Later, we switched to Normal mode and drove using the brakes normally like a regular car. For tight corners, S mode is sportier and better, but on medium-speed sections with gentle curves, Normal mode is preferable because regenerative braking is minimal, so speed doesn’t drop easily, allowing a more flowing drive.

From Yamanashi to Nagano

After fully enjoying the Okutama Loop Road, we decided to head toward Yamanashi. We hadn’t booked a hotel, so it was a spontaneous trip. Looking at the touring map, we picked a nice road and headed west, passing through Kofu and toward Kai city.

Since this area is familiar, we had some idea of the roads. We headed north on the Imogadake Wide Farm Road, aiming for Kiyosato, but somehow ended up at Mizugaki Lake (Shiokawa Dam). I had mistakenly come here before in a Boxster, so I guess I’m drawn to this place (laughs).

We took a break at Mizugaki Lake, then planned to cross the mountains westward, but the roads looked narrow and many sections were closed due to heavy rain, so we gave up and returned toward Kiyosato.

Though it was cloudy and Yatsugatake didn’t show its face, we enjoyed the nostalgic townscape of Kiyosato while heading north on Route 141, then turned onto Prefectural Route 480 toward Matsubarako with the NISMO Note.

Yatsugatake View Road

This road running east to west across Yatsugatake is one of my personal favorites. The weather was so-so that day, so traffic was light, and again we had the road almost to ourselves.

We enjoyed the winding roads, and on long uphill sections, I floored the accelerator. The car still delivered strong acceleration, but after repeating this, the power meter on the instrument panel showed shorter peak times and the acceleration tapered off quickly.

It seemed the generator couldn’t keep up. The battery still showed about two bars left, but to avoid fully draining it, the power was automatically limited.

So, when I drove with the accelerator about halfway pressed, the power meter stayed at max without cutting back.

I’m not sure of the details, but the accelerator opening and power output in S mode don’t seem to be directly proportional. So there’s no need to go full throttle; half or slightly more than half throttle delivers nearly maximum power.

Having figured out the power control trick, I climbed steep slopes trying to maintain max power as long as possible. While resting in a parking spot, I heard a humming fan noise from under the passenger seat—my first time noticing this.

The Note’s drive battery is under the seat and is cooled by a fan. After using a lot of power on mountain roads, the battery must have heated up.

After a while, the fan stopped and we resumed driving. Since the rest of the route was downhill, the battery was charged by regenerative braking and showed full charge. Then, the Note can’t store more electricity, so it spins the engine with the motor to consume excess energy.

That humming sound is normal and similar to engine braking noise in a regular car.

The NISMO Note is still fast on downhill runs. Regenerative braking acts as a perfect brake, allowing confident driving, and the suspension keeps up well with tight corners. It’s front-wheel drive but shows no understeer or torque steer. The handling feels very natural.

That said, it doesn’t have the cornering speed of a Porsche. I think this is largely due to the tires. The YOKOHAMA S Drive tires aren’t bad but lean more toward longevity than performance. They feel like hard tires in Gran Turismo games—okay but not aggressive.

Interestingly, when driving this route in a Porsche, even when not trying to go fast, you quickly catch up to the car ahead. But on this trip, even driving at a decent pace, the gap to the car ahead didn’t close much. I think this is probably due to the different speed perception felt by the driver.

Next page → The Kansai driver’s dream: Venus Line in Nagano!

Visiting Venus Line in Nagano before heading home

We stayed overnight in Suwa city and aimed for Venus Line early the next morning. Since we came this far, it would be a shame not to drive the Venus Line. We tried to keep up but he was quite fast.

More than that, his driving was excellent.

The car and driver suited each other perfectly, and I thought I’d like to age like that.

We stopped at Karasuyama Kogen and Fujimidai, then headed toward Utsukushigahara. Route 142 is wide and one of my favorite roads. I thought, “I’d love to drive this in a GT3,” as we got on the highway at Okaya IC.

The Note e-power NISMO S is fast even on the highway

The Chuo Expressway toward Nagoya has many downhill high-speed corners, which are quite dangerous and prone to accidents. I personally think it’s the second hardest section after the Omega curve on the Meihan National Road, and only a serious car can handle it comfortably.

Driving a car with soft suspension or body flex here is just terrifying.

On the way back, I tried to avoid using Intelligent Cruise Control as much as possible and just drove normally with traffic flow. Even when pushing a bit, the NISMO Note remained very stable. Lane changes at high speed and sharp downhill curves were handled with plenty of composure.

For a car in this price range, this level of performance is more than enough.

There’s almost no body or suspension softness or instability that makes you feel like you might fly off the road. While the tires don’t quite stick to the road like racing tires, cornering posture is stable and the body clearly controls the car’s movements.

There’s no uncertainty about which way the tires are pointing, so you can drive with peace of mind.

On the other hand, fuel economy drops sharply at speeds typical of the overtaking lane on rural highways. The onboard computer shows around 12 km/L. It’s said that e-power cars have weak highway fuel economy, and maintaining overtaking lane speeds on Japanese highways seems to cause a big drop.

At normal cruising speeds, even this NISMO S gets 18–19 km/L, sometimes about 20 km/L, so the standard Note probably does even better.

The Note e-power NISMO S handles long-distance touring with no problem

The total distance over three days was about 1385 km. We enjoyed city driving, winding roads, and highways from Osaka to Tokyo, Yamanashi, Nagano, and back to Osaka, and felt very little fatigue. (Though it might be a bit tiring for passengers in the front seat.)

Sometimes I rent similar compact Japanese cars, and if I had to drive this distance in one, I’d definitely hate it. I’d get tired quickly.

But the NISMO Note makes even this grand touring enjoyable without getting bored.
