{"id":37690,"date":"2019-11-01T06:00:08","date_gmt":"2019-10-31T21:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37690"},"modified":"2019-10-31T14:32:31","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T05:32:31","slug":"ashinoko-skyline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/ashinoko-skyline\/","title":{"rendered":"Touring the Ashinoko Skyline \u2013 GT3 and BMW 320i Drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">Heading to Ashinoko Skyline<\/h3>\n<p>The Porsche Track Experience (PTE) Master Course was canceled due to heavy rain, but the next day cleared up as if by magic, so we decided to head to the Ashinoko Skyline and then make our way home.<\/p>\n<p>If the kids weren\u2019t with us, I would have loved to drive all the famous roads around there, like the Hakone Turnpike or Fuji Subaru Line, but with children, that\u2019s not really possible. So, we decided to go to the <strong>Ashinoko Skyline, which I had never driven on a clear day before<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, shortly after the Panamera was delivered, we stopped by Ashinoko Skyline on the way to Fuji Speedway to watch the WEC, but as usual, it was thick fog\u2014not only was Mount Fuji invisible, but we couldn\u2019t even see two meters ahead, so we had to drive very slowly back. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Seriously, why am I such a rain magnet\u2026)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">320i on Ashinoko Skyline<\/h3>\n<p>We approached from the Gotemba side and entered Ashinoko Skyline from Hakone Pass.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_5457-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For a while, the road was quite narrow mountain paths, and I was a bit nervous with oncoming traffic. As we neared the Ashinoko Skyline toll booth, sports cars and other obviously fast vehicles increased in number, and I thought, &#8220;<strong>Car enthusiasts living in the Kanto area must be out here driving from early morning on their days off, too<\/strong>.&#8221; It made me smile to realize that no matter where you go in Japan, everyone\u2019s doing the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>Since I don\u2019t have much experience driving on driveways other than the nearby Royu Driveway, I couldn\u2019t help but compare them, but <strong>the Ashinoko Skyline has a variety of curves like a mountain pass, along with wide, gentle downhill and uphill sections<\/strong>, making it a very enjoyable drive.<\/p>\n<p>And above all, the breathtaking view below is simply incredible\u2026 It\u2019s amazing to be able to drive while overlooking such a majestic landscape. We stopped for a photo break at Mikuni Pass.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_5394-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I said, \u201cWow, Ashinoko is really huge,\u201d my husband replied,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">No, that\u2019s Suruga Bay. Ashinoko can\u2019t be that big\u2014it\u2019s not Lake Biwa, you know, lol.<\/p>\n<p>I realized I had no sense of the local geography as a Kansai native and had made a big mistake, but <strong>such grand scenery is rare in the Kinki region<\/strong>, so I felt a bit envious.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15131\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Snapseed-1-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I drove the Ashinoko Skyline in the BMW 320i, and naturally, it felt fantastic. The 320i handles well and the engine has started to respond nicely, so driving it was fun. However, <strong>with the kids in the back seat, I had to be mindful of them, so I couldn\u2019t really push the car hard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is true wherever we drive: the kids in the back seat might say things like &#8220;<strong>I feel sick<\/strong>&#8221; or &#8220;<strong>Open the window\u2014no, it\u2019s cold, close it again<\/strong>,&#8221; or if they\u2019re asleep, their heads bounce violently side to side with every curve, so I have to drive a bit more cautiously.<\/p>\n<p>When the kids are older, I\u2019d love to come back and drive here just the two of us\u2014but knowing our luck, it\u2019ll probably rain again, lol.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">GT3 on Ashinoko Skyline<\/h3>\n<p>After we got home, I asked my husband, &#8220;<strong>How was driving the Ashinoko Skyline in the GT3?<\/strong>,&#8221; and he said,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">I\u2019d only driven it in the Boxster before, but it\u2019s totally different. The GT3 sticks to the curves like glue, which makes it incredibly fun. <strong>Ashinoko Skyline has wide roads with gentle high-speed curves.<\/strong> On roads like that, the GT3 really shines and is a blast to drive. It grips the road tightly at high speed through the curves. On the other hand, places like Royu have narrow roads with sharp low- and medium-speed corners, so the GT3\u2019s strengths are harder to show there.
