Test Drive of the New Mercedes-Benz GLS<\/h3>\n

Lately, our family has started to take an interest in SUVs<\/a>, and recently, my husband and I had the chance to test drive one of the SUVs we were curious about: the Mercedes-Benz GLS.<\/strong> Our family has always been loyal to Porsche, but<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve recently come to think that maybe an SUV doesn\u2019t need to be so sporty. Since we already have sporty cars like the GT3, an SUV that\u2019s the opposite\u2014a luxurious, comfortable ride\u2014is what we want.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With that mindset, I was very interested in the Mercedes-Benz GLS, known as a luxurious SUV.<\/p>\n

On the day of the test drive, we didn\u2019t go to a dealer but to Mercedes me Osaka. I like this place because it\u2019s easy to drop by casually when you\u2019re not exactly ready to buy immediately but want to try it out once<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

However, popular models tend to get booked quickly. We checked the GLS reservation availability every day for about two weeks and finally managed to book our preferred time slot.<\/p>\n

On the day itself, as expected\u2026 the weather was an unprecedented heavy downpour.<\/strong> For a while, I thought, \u201cMaybe I\u2019ve finally outgrown my rain luck!\u201d but no, my reputation as a rain magnet remains intact. (Though it was also the rainy season.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When we arrived safely, the main showroom featured the much-talked-about GLB. It looked stylish and cool, and the interior was surprisingly spacious.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As expected from Mercedes-Benz, they really know how to release models that make everyone think, \u201cI want this!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finally, it was time for the GLS test drive. The model prepared for us was the Mercedes-Benz GLS 400d 4MATIC (AMG Line).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to tell from the photos, but the body color was Emerald Green\u2014a color I had never seen before. It was understated yet incredibly cool.<\/p>\n

So, in this article, I\u2019ll share my impressions (focusing mainly on ride comfort as I\u2019m nearly full-term pregnant)<\/span>, and in a separate article, I\u2019ll share my husband\u2019s thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n

Expectations for the GLS<\/h3>\n

Before the test drive, I did something unusual for me\u2014I watched several YouTube test drive videos to prepare. Based on that, I had three main points I was curious about:<\/p>\n

\u2713 How smooth is the ride really?<\/strong>
\nEveryone in the videos praised it as \u201cluxurious\u201d and \u201csmooth,\u201d so my expectations were quite high.
\n\u2713 How comfortable is the rear seat?<\/strong>
\nWhen our family rented the previous generation GLS in the U.S. for about a week, some roads were poorly paved, and the rear seats shook like a bus, making me feel sick and sleep most of the time. So I was curious how much the new model improved rear seat comfort compared to the previous one.
\n\u2713 How refined and luxurious does it feel to drive?<\/strong>
\nCar critics highly praised it in the videos, so I imagined it would feel like driving our old S63 Coupe but as an SUV\u2014rich and smooth. I wanted to experience that.<\/p>\n

But\u2026 to be honest, this preparation backfired. I raised my expectations so much that I imagined a ride as rich and smooth as a Bentley Bentayga\u2019s, and I deeply regret not going in with no prior knowledge.<\/p>\n

So first, I sat in the second row (rear seats).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As expected of the GLS, the seat quality was superb\u2014thick and very comfortable. The space was also very generous. Even with the seat slid all the way forward, there was still plenty of legroom.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In fact, when sitting deeply into the seat, my feet didn\u2019t even touch the floor, so I think tall men can sit very comfortably. (And I guess my legs must be pretty short.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The seatback reclines, so long drives should be very comfortable. Plus, the second row has power adjustment\u2014truly impressive.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Also, the second row has dedicated air vents, and you can independently control temperature and airflow with the push of a button.<\/strong> There are also seat heaters. Perfect.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Looking into the third row, it was understandably tight but seemed sufficient for kids. The third-row seats also have heaters and independent climate controls. Plus, you can still load luggage in the trunk even when the third row is occupied.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Truly impressive.<\/p>\n

The second-row armrest also has great storage and sturdy cup holders.<\/p>\n

After that, my husband drove on public roads.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Compared to the previous generation GLS we drove, there was less shaking.<\/strong> But since the test route was in Osaka city with well-paved roads, that difference might have been significant.<\/p>\n

The ride was smooth and relaxed, but it didn\u2019t feel like it perfectly absorbed every bump; there was a slight floating sensation.<\/strong> When we tried adjusting the ride height (the suspension stiffness can\u2019t be changed)<\/span>, raising the height made the ride feel much firmer.<\/p>\n

Usually, lowering the ride height makes the ride firmer, but for the GLS SUV, raising the height tightens the suspension, making it feel firmer, we were told.<\/p>\n

However, the firmer setting made the rear seats feel quite bumpy, so the normal ride height felt more comfortable.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That said, honestly, I felt the current Cayenne\u2019s rear seats were more stable and smoother.<\/strong> But during our test, only three of the seven seats were occupied, so with more passengers, it might have felt more stable. Also, my husband said:<\/p>\n

The new E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL system seems amazing. It\u2019s equipped on the GLS580, and I think that would make a big difference in ride comfort. I\u2019m curious about that one too.<\/p>\n

To repeat, the problem was that I raised my expectations too high by watching videos beforehand. The GLS is undoubtedly a wonderful car,<\/strong> and without prior knowledge, I\u2019m sure I would have been more impressed.<\/p>\n

More than the ride, the perfect features that cover every little need create a luxurious atmosphere and comfort that everyone, including passengers, can fully enjoy.<\/strong> That\u2019s the real strength of the GLS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n

Driving the GLS<\/h3>\n

Next, I switched with my husband and got to drive the GLS myself. Just a few years ago, I was a nervous driver who said, \u201cThere\u2019s no way I can drive a car bigger than a Prius,\u201d<\/strong> so I never imagined I\u2019d be driving a GLS.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Right away, I noticed you don\u2019t feel the large body size at all.<\/strong> Maybe that\u2019s common with modern SUVs. Even though it\u2019s over 2 meters wide, it\u2019s surprisingly nimble and easy to maneuver. The steering was light and easy to handle.<\/p>\n

Also, the driving feel was \u201cjust light.\u201d<\/strong> I expected to feel some weight with a 2.5-ton vehicle, but it felt very light. On the other hand, it felt a bit floaty, as if lacking ground contact.<\/p>\n

This is purely personal preference, but I like a certain weighty feel in a luxury car\u2019s ride. When a car has power, that weightiness doesn\u2019t feel heavy but adds to the premium feel. My husband said:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a recent trend that European cars have lighter ride feels. Also, comparing sedans and SUVs, sedans with lower ride height naturally feel more luxurious.<\/strong> The S Coupe we had before definitely rode better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, it\u2019s true that the GLS is easy to drive in many ways. It has features like automatic lane change when signaling, gear shifting via a lever without taking hands off the steering wheel,<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

and very clear camera images that make it easy to check the sides and obstacles.<\/strong> It also has a monitor to check for cars approaching from the side, which is very helpful at narrow intersections given the GLS\u2019s long front end.<\/p>\n

On top of these abundant safety features, the S-Class also comes standard with a massage function that soothes your tired body on long drives. I tried it, and it was just right\u2014not too strong or weak\u2014and didn\u2019t interfere with driving.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This level of thoughtful detail makes for a truly comfortable drive.<\/p>\n

Also, the heated and cooled cup holders<\/strong> are large, easy to use, and very sturdy (a big difference from Porsche)<\/span>. With the push of a button, you can switch between heating and cooling, keeping your drinks just right.<\/p>\n

I was really impressed\u2026 I want these cup holders.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

By the way, the small storage compartment behind the cup holders supports Qi wireless charging\u2014just place your compatible smartphone there to charge.<\/p>\n

This attention to detail and pursuit of comfort is impressive, and most of these features come standard without needing to add options.<\/strong> Truly wonderful.<\/p>\n

Even drivers who aren\u2019t confident can operate it safely and enjoy driving it fully.<\/p>\n

That said, since I focused on \u201csmooth ride and luxury feel,\u201d my raised expectations made me feel a bit underwhelmed. But this isn\u2019t the GLS\u2019s fault\u2014it\u2019s entirely my own fault for setting my expectations too high.<\/p>\n

My husband said:<\/p>\n

\u201cMina, you\u2019re just used to great cars, haha. You can\u2019t compare it to a Bentayga. At that level, the only other option is the Cullinan<\/strong> (laughs). For someone who doesn\u2019t know those, a wife riding the GLS would usually be much more impressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s absolutely right. Sorry, sorry\u2026<\/p>\n

Will we buy the GLS\u2026?<\/h3>\n

At first, we thought, \u201cWe don\u2019t need that much sportiness in an SUV, so the GLS or X7 might be better than the Cayenne,\u201d so I focused on ride comfort rather than driving performance during this test.<\/p>\n

Honestly, based on my personal preference, I felt the current Cayenne offers a more refined and smoother ride.<\/strong> Especially the luxury feel when driving\u2014the Cayenne felt superior.<\/p>\n

And realizing the Cayenne delivers better ride comfort than even the Panamera sedan made me appreciate how amazing the Cayenne really is. (Sorry for being such a Porsche fan.)<\/span><\/p>\n

My husband agreed, and I hope you\u2019ll look forward to his impressions in a future article.<\/p>\n
