From what he says, he\u2019s discovered even more about the car now than he had in those first few days of ownership. I asked him what could possibly feel alike in a car built over 40 years ago and a modern-day Porsche, and he said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">I guess it\u2019s the handling. And the engine note, too\u2014the GT3 sounds remarkably similar when the exhaust valves open. If I\u2019d driven the cars on different days, I might not have noticed it as much, but I drove the GT3 on the exact same road right after the 1973 Carrera, so the comparison was really clear.<br \/>\nI actually found myself shouting, \u201c<strong>Wow! That\u2019s incredible\u2014they\u2019re so alike!<\/strong>\u201d all by myself (laughs).<br \/>\nIt\u2019s hard to explain exactly what I mean by \u201calike,\u201d but it feels like <strong>the lightness and quickness of the 1973 Carrera, brought to life with modern technology<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThis is just an analogy based on how it feels to me, but think about enlarging a photo on a computer while keeping its proportions. The size changes, so in that sense it\u2019s different, but the subject in the picture is still the same. That\u2019s how it feels.<br \/>\nIt really brought home to me that the 1973 Carrera is the GT3\u2019s ancestor, and that this is where its driving heritage began. So, <strong>once you\u2019ve experienced a 1973 Carrera, the GT3 becomes even more rewarding to drive.<\/strong> Ever since then, I\u2019ve been loving every chance to take the GT3 out on winding roads.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how he put it.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_the_911_GT3_Is_Like_to_Ride_In\"><\/span>What the 911 GT3 Is Like to Ride In<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>At low speeds, the GT3\u2019s ride is admittedly not very comfortable. Its suspension is firm and picks up bumps in the road, so rough surfaces can feel quite choppy.<\/p>\n<p>On the highway, though, the experience changes completely. The ride becomes remarkably smooth, with the planted feel, stiffness, and stability all working together. It\u2019s hard to believe you\u2019re in a car built for the track. So my husband says:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\"><strong>When you take the GT3 out, it\u2019s important to choose roads where you can keep up a decent speed.<\/strong> There\u2019s no doubt the suspension is on the firm side, but it\u2019s a rear-engined car, and I don\u2019t think the front spring rates\u2014which have a big impact on ride comfort\u2014are all that stiff. To me, the short suspension travel is more of a factor in the uncomfortable ride at low speeds.<br \/>\nRough roads at low speeds are the worst. The car rocks you around. But you don\u2019t get that <strong>sharp jolt you\u2019d expect from stiff springs or bushings<\/strong>. It\u2019s really <strong>the bumps and undulations in the road at low speeds that make the car sway<\/strong>. Once you pick up speed, though, the suspension smooths them out and they don\u2019t bother you as much. I\u2019d say that happens at around 80 km\/h or faster. So even on regular roads, I\u2019d rather drive somewhere with relatively little traffic where I can enjoy a more flowing pace.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what he said.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Plan_Ahead_Before_Taking_Your_GT3_on_a_Tour\"><\/span>Plan Ahead Before Taking Your GT3 on a Tour<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Last weekend, my husband took the GT3 out on the Koyaryujin Skyline. The area was full of family cars carrying sightseers, and he found himself following a line of them at just 35 km\/h for the entire drive. It felt like being stuck behind a sightseeing train (laughs).<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Driving slowly for a long time in the GT3 is exhausting. In the Boxster, you can put the top down and enjoy a change of pace even when you\u2019re going slowly. But the GT3 isn\u2019t comfortable at low speeds, and you can\u2019t open the roof, so that whole drive was tough.<br \/>\nNext time, I\u2019ll either go on a weekday or, if I\u2019m going on the weekend, plan things carefully and stick to roads where I can enjoy driving. For a nearby option, I\u2019d say the <strong>Mimasaka Yamanami Highway<\/strong> in Okayama is a good choice.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_0884-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Slow_Traffic_Can_Tire_Your_Neck%E2%80%94and_Fuel_Economy\"><\/span>Slow Traffic Can Tire Your Neck\u2014and Fuel Economy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>My husband drove to the Koyaryujin Skyline the other day and covered around 450 km that day. \u201c<strong>When you\u2019re stuck driving slowly in the GT3, your neck gets tired<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">The car rocks around whenever it hits bumps or dips, so I must be unconsciously trying to keep my head straight. My neck got stiff. That\u2019s never happened to me in the Boxster or the 964. Then again, not many people drive this far in a GT3 in a single day.<\/p>\n<p>Does that mean GT3 owners should train their necks like race drivers? (laughs)<\/p>\n<p>On a brighter note, the GT3 seems to be getting better fuel economy than it used to. My husband thinks the engine may be loosening up. On this day trip, for example, it averaged 10.6 L\/100 km\u2014about <strong>9.4 km\/L<\/strong>, nearly 1 km\/L better than when the car was brand-new.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/D7C96001-168F-4A14-8F51-F7F960D72D1E-800x533.jpeg\" alt=\"911 GT3 fuel economy\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"People_Often_Stop_to_Talk\"><\/span>People Often Stop to Talk<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>This may have less to do with the GT3 itself and more to do with its unusual Crayon paint, but people often come over when he parks. They\u2019ll say things like, \u201cThat\u2019s Crayon, right?\u201d or, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have a wing\u2014is it really a GT3?\u201d The other day, he told me:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">I got out of the car in a parking lot, and someone came over and said, \u201cThat\u2019s a Crayon GT3, right? I really want one!\u201d We ended up chatting for a while. People really know their stuff\u2014they\u2019ve clearly done their homework.<\/p>\n<p>The car does have a different look from a regular 911, and while it has the GT3 vibe, it doesn\u2019t have the big rear wing. That combination probably makes people curious enough to strike up a conversation.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Surprisingly_It_Rarely_Scrapes\"><\/span>Surprisingly, It Rarely Scrapes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>My husband\u2019s GT3 is equipped with the <strong>front axle lift system<\/strong>, which raises the front of the car by 30 mm at the press of a button. Thanks to it, he says he doesn\u2019t have to worry too much about scraping over convenience-store entrances or on sloping roads. He told me:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Before I bought it, I thought I\u2019d have to hold my breath every time I drove over a bump or up a slope. But with this option, that hasn\u2019t been an issue at all. It\u2019s perfectly usable as a daily driver.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_0863-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Id_Like_to_Drive_the_GT3_Again_Soon\"><\/span>I\u2019d Like to Drive the GT3 Again Soon<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve driven the GT3 for even 50 km yet. But I got to take the wheel briefly on the way to Fuji Speedway the other day, and most of my apprehension disappeared\u2014I was able to drive it normally.
