Choosing Our Family Car<\/h3>\n

Previously, I wrote an article titled \u201cChoosing a Car (What You Want from a Car) Changes Greatly Depending on Your Family\u2019s Situation at the Time\u201d<\/a>, and recently I\u2019ve been feeling that more and more.<\/p>\n

What our family looks for in a car has truly changed a lot since I started this blog three years ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Three years ago, when I started this blog, the cars we had were \u201cBoxster GTS,\u201d \u201cPanamera Edition,\u201d and \u201cAudi A3.\u201d<\/strong> Our criteria for choosing cars back then focused heavily on \u201csolid, sporty driving performance,\u201d<\/strong> while ride comfort, interior features, luxury, and cabin comfort were secondary.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Three years later, the cars we currently have are \u201cPorsche Boxster GTS,\u201d \u201cPorsche Panamera Turbo,\u201d \u201cPorsche 911 GT3,\u201d \u201cPorsche 911 (964),\u201d \u201cNissan Note NISMO e-POWER,\u201d and \u201cBMW 320i.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

And probably this fall, the \u201cPanamera Turbo\u201d will be replaced by a \u201c911 Cabriolet.\u201d (Production has finally started, apparently.)<\/span><\/p>\n

…Though, seriously, there are only two drivers in our family, so what\u2019s going on here? (-_-)<\/p>\n

While I joke about that, my car-loving husband has been pursuing the elements of \u201csports cars\u201d and \u201cperformance\u201d<\/strong>, which has led to an increase in cars that satisfy those desires but each with different personalities and charms, bringing us to where we are now.<\/p>\n

As a result, there was a time when my husband drove sports cars all year round\u2014both for weekday commuting and weekend drives.<\/strong> I also regularly traveled long distances, so looking at the mileage on each car, they each clocked over 10,000 km annually, making for quite an active car life.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

At the Opposite End from Porsche…<\/h3>\n

But recently, my husband\u2019s attitude has shifted a bit. After enjoying sports cars for so long, he\u2019s started feeling that \u201cthe car I drive every day doesn\u2019t have to be that sporty. Rather, it might be better to have a car that\u2019s comfortable and relaxing for everyday use.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Also, our kids have grown up (our eldest daughter is 6, second daughter is 3, and we\u2019re expecting our third child in August)<\/span>, and when we go out as a family, they\u2019ve started commenting on the ride comfort. They seem to really admire big minivans, often whispering enviously, \u201cI want that car too\u2026\u201d<\/strong> And with one more family member on the way…<\/p>\n

It\u2019s starting to feel like having all sporty cars in our garage might not be the best fit anymore.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And recently, my husband has been saying things like this:<\/p>\n

Before we started buying Porsches like we do now, what I wanted from a car was \u201csports car performance\u201d<\/strong> and \u201ccoupe styling,\u201d<\/strong> and I couldn\u2019t even imagine owning an SUV or a tall vehicle. But after driving the Boxster, the GT3, the 911, McLaren, SL… after owning a good number of sports cars, I\u2019ve come to think it\u2019d be nice to have an SUV that I can drive without pressure, one that doesn\u2019t demand attention but quietly supports me and lets me relax.
\nLast year, when I was considering the Note NISMO for commuting, I thought, \u201cIt still needs to be somewhat sporty,\u201d but now my thinking has shifted to \u201cSince I have the ultimate sports car, the GT3, it\u2019s okay if my daily driver isn\u2019t sporty at all.\u201d<\/strong>
\nThat said, when I get behind the wheel of a Porsche, I\u2019ll probably still say, \u201cIt\u2019s gotta be a Porsche!\u201d<\/strong> though, haha.<\/p>\n

Indeed, I haven\u2019t driven as many sports cars as my husband, but having had some experience, I find myself thinking, \u201cI totally get what he\u2019s saying lately.\u201d<\/strong> If I couldn\u2019t drive a manual now, things might be different, but after practicing and becoming able to drive the manual GT3 and Boxster, I\u2019ve also thought, \u201cMy daily driver doesn\u2019t need to be a car that puts me in battle mode.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

My husband also says this:<\/p>\n

I like the Cayenne too, but recently I\u2019ve started thinking that even the Cayenne is pretty sporty. It\u2019s a Porsche, after all.
\nWhen I think about it, SUVs from Mercedes or BMW seem more relaxed and luxurious to drive, and they come well-equipped and with luxurious interiors right from the start, without having to add options one by one like with Porsche. The rear seats are spacious too, which seems pretty good.
\nRight now, I\u2019m interested in the GLS or the X7.
\nWell, considering depreciation and all, I don\u2019t have the courage to buy new, but maybe I\u2019ll look for a used one at the right time.<\/p>\n

And the BMW 320i…<\/h3>\n

Along with these changes, my husband\u2019s company shifted to remote work for everyone starting late January due to COVID-19. After a few months, since things ran smoothly, he\u2019s decided to continue working mainly remotely.<\/p>\n

So, the Note e-POWER NISMO we bought for commuting at the start of the year is barely being used now, and we often talk about how \u201cIt\u2019s such a great car, it\u2019s a shame not to drive it more.\u201d<\/strong> Plus, the kids love the Note NISMO, saying things like \u201cThe back is spacious! The air conditioning cools really well!\u201d<\/strong> and they always seem eager to ride in it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As for me, I bought the BMW 320i last spring to learn how to drive a manual, and I drive it almost every day. But the kids complain that it\u2019s \u201csuper hot\u201d<\/strong> (the windows have no sunshade or tint, and the air conditioning isn\u2019t very effective, haha)<\/span> and \u201cthe back seat is smaller than the Note\u2019s.\u201d<\/strong> (Sad, haha)<\/span> <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve achieved my original goal of learning to drive a manual, and considering our family\u2019s overall situation, it might be best to sell the BMW and have me drive the NISMO more regularly.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what I\u2019ve started thinking.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

That said, neither of us has lost interest in cars. My husband still watches car reviews on YouTube and reads magazines every day, and I\u2019m still aiming to \u201cbuy my own Porsche.\u201d<\/strong> Our passion for cars remains strong.<\/p>\n

However, after admiring Porsche as the pinnacle of sports cars, having Porsches come into our family, and driving them on various roads, it feels like we\u2019ve come full circle…<\/p>\n

Since we already have cars focused on sporty driving, our mindset has shifted to wanting a car for daily life that comfortably seats five family members.<\/strong> Looking around, many people I know who own Porsches also have an SUV for family use, and I now think, <\/p>\n

\u201cAh, that\u2019s how it is! That\u2019s smart!\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a realization that\u2019s come to me a bit late.<\/p>\n
