{"id":37719,"date":"2020-06-27T06:00:55","date_gmt":"2020-06-26T21:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37719"},"modified":"2021-06-01T22:52:56","modified_gmt":"2021-06-01T13:52:56","slug":"cayenne-coupe-testdrive-2006-kouhen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/cayenne-coupe-testdrive-2006-kouhen\/","title":{"rendered":"Test Drive of the Porsche Cayenne Coupe (Part 2)\uff5cHow Does the Engine and Driving Feel?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/cayynne-coupe-202006\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the first part of my test drive report on the Cayenne Coupe<\/a>, and now, at last, I\u2019d like to share my husband\u2019s impressions (Part 2) that you\u2019ve been waiting for.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>On a rare sunny break during the rainy season, we were fortunate to have the chance to test drive the new Cayenne Coupe. <strong>The grade was the S model, officially named the &#8220;Cayenne S Coupe.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Compared to the standard Cayenne, which is not a coupe, it features a more gradual roofline and a slightly lower overall height, giving it a much sportier, low and wide stance. The side silhouette closely resembles the traditional roofline of the Porsche 911. Especially when compared side-by-side with the standard Cayenne, the difference is immediately obvious.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18677\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/32E62BC9-6C7C-49EA-BC79-EC52FC24FA72-1-1280x854.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had previously test-driven the standard Cayenne, which was the base model, so this time I wanted to focus on <strong>how much the S differs from the base, and how the optional features affect the driving experience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Cayenne S Coupe<\/h3>\n<p>This <strong>Cayenne S Coupe is equipped with a 2.9L V6 engine<\/strong>, which is said to be a masterpiece designed entirely in-house by Porsche without Volkswagen\u2019s assistance. The last time I experienced this engine was when I test drove the current Panamera 4S, and I personally had a very favorable impression.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, the lively V6 sound was memorable, and the engine\u2019s revving felt very sporty and light on its feet. This time, since it\u2019s installed in the Cayenne rather than the Panamera, I was curious to see how it was tuned as I turned the ignition switch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/E0739E6A-B3AD-4547-ACB0-406A9976494F-1280x854.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The startup sound of the base Cayenne I drove before (with a 3-liter V6) was very quiet, so I deliberately listened closely. Then, the V6 engine awakened with a light \u201c<strong>fohn!<\/strong>\u201d sound.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unlike other Porsches that roar with a \u201cbwooon!\u201d as the tach needle jumps up, this is a gentler awakening.<\/strong> It\u2019s louder than the base Cayenne but still very refined. <strong>Considering this car is equipped with the sport exhaust, its quietness was surprising.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That said, it\u2019s still more assertive than a typical passenger car or sedan.<\/p>\n<p>Gently resting my foot on the accelerator and pressing down, I immediately noticed a difference from the base Cayenne. Although my memory is a bit hazy, <strong>the base Cayenne\u2019s accelerator pedal felt lighter.<\/strong> In contrast, this <strong>Cayenne S Coupe\u2019s accelerator pedal has a moderate weight, very Porsche-like.<\/strong> This would make it easier to maintain a steady speed on the highway.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional Cayenne Tiptronic S (8-speed), not the PDK, offers <strong>a very smooth start.<\/strong> This is quite remarkable. The initial power delivery and the feel of the first tire rotation are very refined, far better than many luxury sedans.<\/p>\n<p>Driving around town in normal mode, you\u2019ll find yourself quickly in 5th or 6th gear. If you gently press the accelerator, the torquey engine smoothly builds speed. This is sufficient most of the time, but if you want a bit more urgency, <strong>pressing the accelerator a bit harder causes the transmission to drop two gears at once, launching you into a fierce dash.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This power delivery can feel a bit exaggerated and might be difficult for some drivers. It\u2019s <strong>very similar to the behavior of the Panamera Turbo.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/21F95F81-82AC-449E-8570-627FBF012358-1280x854.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Usually gentle, but once it bares its teeth, the turbo boost kicks in hard, and combined with the downshifted gear ratio, it sometimes accelerates more than the driver expects. This is fine for a dash from a toll booth, but <strong>when you want to overtake lightly or smoothly pull ahead in city traffic, it can feel a bit overpowering.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To avoid this, you can keep it in sport mode and drive in lower gears to reduce kickdowns, which results in smoother driving, but that\u2019s not great for fuel economy or the environment. So, <strong>I think the base Cayenne is easier to drive in city traffic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Cayenne Coupe Ride Comfort<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The ride comfort is outstanding.<\/strong> Truly excellent. I consider the new Cayenne one of the top vehicles currently available in terms of ride quality. I\u2019ve driven various SUVs from other manufacturers, but few offer such a flat and smooth tire-rolling sensation.<\/p>\n<p>When I previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/new-cayyenn-testdrive-impression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experienced the base Cayenne<\/a>, I was amazed by its ride comfort, and <strong>this Cayenne Coupe impressed me just as much.<\/strong> Both have excellent ride quality, but <strong>achieving this comfort with 21-inch optional wheels is remarkable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also, adjusting the ride height greatly changes the ride quality, so if you want a wider range of comfort, you should opt for air suspension.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/DA9DF288-7D87-403F-B0BE-65F16B1D8750-1280x854.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Compared to the previous generation Cayenne, the ride and driving feel are quite different. <strong>The previous model had a distinctly SUV-like feel, with a bit of sway at low speeds, typical of SUVs.<\/strong> The new Cayenne, in contrast, feels even flatter, more luxurious, and sportier. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(It\u2019s like the previous Cayenne plus the nimbleness and sportiness of the Macan.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This test car did not have PDCC, while the base Cayenne I drove before did. <strong>Asked if there\u2019s a difference, I would say yes, definitely.<\/strong> The PDCC-equipped model is flatter. Since the Cayenne is a tall vehicle, even with a flat ride compared to a Panamera, there is some lateral sway. But <strong>the PDCC-equipped car suppresses this significantly, minimizing lateral and vertical movement.<\/strong> That\u2019s the key difference.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_8176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Still, <strong>even without PDCC, the new Cayenne offers a very flat ride<\/strong>, and very few people would find the sway uncomfortable. However, <strong>if you want sedan- or coupe-level flatness in your Cayenne, I think you should get PDCC.<\/strong> Personally, I love an ultra-flat ride, so I definitely want PDCC.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/cayenne-coupe-testdrive-2006-kouhen\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 Engine and Handling of the Cayenne S Coupe<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/cayenne-coupe-testdrive-2006-kouhen\/2\/\"> How Does It Perform? Final Verdict<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Cayenne Coupe Engine and Handling<\/h3>\n<p>The engine is very quiet while driving. <strong>Road noise and engine sound are well insulated, providing a very comfortable cabin environment.<\/strong> Even with the sport exhaust equipped, it remains quiet. At this level of quietness, the sport exhaust might not be necessary\u2014at least with the windows closed inside the cabin, that\u2019s how it felt.<\/p>\n<p>Opening the windows and moving to a winding road, I revved the engine a bit in sport mode. The V6 produces a crisp, well-rounded sound. It\u2019s not very showy in the low to mid RPM range, but <strong>the sound improves significantly as it approaches higher revs. Compared to the Panamera 4S with the same engine, it seems to have less high-frequency tone and a stronger midrange.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/68547D5A-787D-4CDE-9887-F3E01116B3DA-1280x854.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The engine power feels consistent with the catalog figure of 0-100 km\/h in 5 seconds. Nowadays, cars hitting the 3-second range are common, so this might feel less impressive, but not long ago this was an overwhelming high-performance car. <strong>There\u2019s no way you\u2019d feel it\u2019s slow or underpowered, and you won\u2019t be disappointed getting overtaken on the highway.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Torque delivery is natural, and you probably won\u2019t notice the turbo when cruising. However, as mentioned earlier, acceleration from kickdown can feel a bit abrupt. This can be good or bad depending on the road and situation, so it\u2019s hard to judge definitively.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/5625503D-55DE-480F-80F7-70E731C7C231-1280x854.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Regarding handling, since the Cayenne offers many combinations of ride height and driving modes, it\u2019s difficult to generalize. But <strong>in the sportiest Sport Plus mode on winding roads, it\u2019s clear to anyone that this SUV has \u2018un-SUV-like\u2019 agility.<\/strong> Body roll is minimal, and the entire body feels noticeably tighter to the driver.<\/p>\n<p>Among Porsches, <strong>the Cayenne S Coupe stands out for its distinct differences between modes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even without consciously trying, just steering through corners applies the right load and the car turns exactly as expected. If you\u2019re driving alone, it\u2019s a car you can genuinely enjoy on winding roads. In such moments, <strong>it\u2019s clear that even as an SUV, it\u2019s unmistakably a Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You might wonder how it feels in normal mode on winding roads. I\u2019d say it\u2019s comparable to the sport mode of other manufacturers\u2019 SUVs. <strong>There\u2019s more body roll than Sport Plus mode and a more relaxed feel, but there\u2019s absolutely no severe understeer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It can easily handle spirited driving on public roads, so anyone can drive it fast.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Cayenne S Coupe Final Verdict<\/h3>\n<p>When I first learned about Porsche, I didn\u2019t like the Cayenne. <strong>A Porsche that\u2019s an SUV? A Porsche that\u2019s tall and big?<\/strong> That\u2019s not a Porsche, and I didn\u2019t understand why anyone would choose a Porsche SUV. So, even when dealers suggested test drives, I often declined.<\/p>\n<p>However, after buying and driving Boxsters, GT3s, and Panameras\u2014from commuting to circuit driving\u2014and experiencing everything from air-cooled Porsches to legendary classics, I\u2019ve been fortunate to gain a broad Porsche experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With that experience, driving the Cayenne feels like it\u2019s not a half-hearted car.<\/strong> It\u2019s not just a Volkswagen Group vehicle wearing Porsche\u2019s badge made to cash in on the SUV boom. Within the constraints of a large SUV body and weight, <strong>it\u2019s clear Porsche seriously crafted a true Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/IMG_8177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, if you buy a Cayenne, there\u2019s no need to feel guilty for not getting a 911. On the contrary, if you\u2019re buying a Cayenne, I hope you don\u2019t just think \u201cI want an SUV\u201d but rather <strong>think of it as buying and driving a Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Cayenne S Coupe is a very well-made Porsche. Among Porsche\u2019s lineup, it\u2019s one of the most luxurious models. The Panamera is also luxurious, but I think the Cayenne is even more so. <strong>If GT models like the GT3 represent the pinnacle of sportiness, the Cayenne represents the pinnacle of luxury.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It offers exceptional ride comfort and luxury, yet still delivers precise handling, an addictive driving feel that makes you want to keep driving, overwhelming performance, and highly controllable brakes\u2014truly the essence of Porsche.<\/p>\n<p>The Cayenne S Coupe, with its beautiful roofline and low, aggressive stance, is ideal for those who prefer a sporty SUV look and value acceleration, power delivery, and engine feel more suited to high-speed driving than city cruising.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Personal Ratings<\/h4>\n<table
