Work One-Third the Time, Earn Three Times as Much<\/h3>\n

Currently, I spend my days quietly running the company I started in my twenties while writing this Porsche blog. When I say I \u201cstarted a company in my twenties<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cchose a life outside of traditional organizations<\/strong>,\u201d people often ask, \u201cDid your parents run a business or company too?<\/strong>\u201d but that\u2019s absolutely not the case.<\/p>\n

I grew up in a typical family with a salaried father and a stay-at-home mother. My father was hardworking and serious, and I remember him often saying things like, \u201cWhen you start working, you have to work three times harder than others<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cEffort never betrays you<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

From a young age, my father was often on business trips or working overtime, and by the time I was in junior high, he was living apart from us for work. I don\u2019t have many memories of spending time or playing with him; I mostly remember him always busy in a suit.<\/p>\n

That said, I didn\u2019t view his busy life negatively. Even as a child, I thought:<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what working means. To get paid, you have to work hard from morning till night.<\/p>\n

I accepted that as just how things were.<\/p>\n

Also, during college, my seniors at part-time jobs often told me, \u201cYou won\u2019t have time once you become a working adult, so travel while you can<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cStudent days are the best<\/strong>,\u201d so I believed that once I became a working adult, I\u2019d be busy with no free time.<\/p>\n

When I finally joined the workforce, I was assigned to sales and spent my first few years in a tough, competitive environment where hard work and grit ruled.<\/p>\n

Back then, I worked desperately. Overtime was normal, working on holidays if results weren\u2019t good was expected,<\/strong> and the more hours you put in, the better your results\u2014and your pay and bonuses\u2014would be.<\/p>\n

I only got long breaks during New Year\u2019s, so I planned overseas trips from summer, bought early-bird tickets, and traveled abroad with friends every New Year\u2019s. I thought, this is normal, this is what being a working adult means.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Later, at 27, I became independent and met my husband. He had already been running his own company for several years and often said things like:<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a common idea that making money easily is bad, or that you have to sweat and work hard to earn, but I don\u2019t think that way. Instead of working three times as hard to earn three times as much, I aim to earn three times as much in one-third the time.<\/strong> Of course, it\u2019s not easy, and I might never fully reach that point. But unless you aim for it, you\u2019ll never get close. You have to use your head, think hard, and aim for it instead of giving up from the start.<\/p>\n

Having lived by grit and hard work for so long, I thought, \u201cWow, that sounds amazing, but it\u2019s impossible in reality<\/strong>\u201d and didn\u2019t take it seriously. But over time, my husband kept saying things like:<\/p>\n

Why do you act without thinking? Plan your strategy before you move.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t just swallow everything whole. Question common sense. Just because it\u2019s common sense doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s right. Think from zero base whether it\u2019s really correct.<\/p>\n

And so on\u2026 At first, I resisted, saying, \u201cI know, but I\u2019m not that skillful!<\/strong>\u201d But after we married and had children, and I couldn\u2019t move freely, and my stamina declined compared to my youth, I gradually thought, \u201cIndeed, I can\u2019t get by on grit alone anymore. I have to use my brain and build a system to make money.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Since late January this year, due to the coronavirus, my husband has been working from home for five months. Although the state of emergency has been lifted, he recently said:<\/p>\n

We tried remote work company-wide for a few months, and everyone did well, so from now on, our company will mainly operate remotely. I currently go to the office once a week, but I hope to reduce that to about once a month soon.<\/p>\n

When I asked, \u201cReally? Will the company run like that?<\/strong>\u201d he said, \u201cYes, it\u2019s running. We built the system for that.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

I deeply felt that my husband has consistently said this since we met, is seriously aiming for it, and is steadily climbing the ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earning Money and Gaining Free Time<\/h3>\n

A little while ago, he said:<\/p>\n

Since buying the Porsche, I\u2019ve been thinking more about how to balance earning money and having free time.<\/strong> It would be a waste to have a Porsche but no time to drive it, so I\u2019ve been seriously thinking about how to secure more time to enjoy it. In fact, the more my income increases, the more free time I have. In that sense, I\u2019m glad I bought the Porsche.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I asked, \u201cThat sounds ideal, but I still feel like you have to work hard to increase earnings.<\/strong>\u201d and he replied:<\/p>\n

Yeah, many people want a life with high income and lots of free time.<\/strong> But somewhere inside, they feel guilty about it. I still feel that a little. Since childhood, we\u2019ve been told to \u201cwork hard and save money<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cwork well at a good company<\/strong>,\u201d so the subconscious has been imprinted that anything other than steady hard work is somehow wrong.<\/strong> So even if people think that lifestyle is nice, few seriously aim for it. But I seriously thought about how to achieve it, searched for ways, and built systems.<\/strong> So I think the first step is to seriously aim for that ideal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Indeed\u2026 I grew up with the idea that effort is about quantity, not efficiency<\/strong>, so it took me a while to accept my husband\u2019s different way of thinking.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I asked, \u201cBut even if you decide to do it seriously, it takes time to build that world, right?<\/strong>\u201d and he said:<\/p>\n

Well\u2026 when I first started my company, I worked from morning till midnight, traveled all over Japan by Shinkansen, and networked with many people\u2014I was the typical passionate CEO. When I bought my Boxster, I was still busy; I even wrote program code while waiting for an oil change at the Porsche Center, haha. That way, I was earning more than when I was a salaried worker, but I was so busy I had no time. I gradually thought, \u201cMy annual income increased, but my hourly wage might have dropped.<\/strong> This way of working has no leverage and is just labor income, so there\u2019s a limit to increasing income.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cI see\u2026 so that\u2019s how you felt. Then?\u201d<\/p>\n

From then on, I stopped caring about \u201cgrowing the company<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cincreasing sales<\/strong>,\u201d or \u201chiring more employees<\/strong>.\u201d It\u2019s fine if those happen as a result, but making them goals wasn\u2019t right for me. Instead, I shifted my goal to \u201cmaking a company that earns well and runs without me.<\/strong>\u201d I changed the business model significantly, focusing on efficiency and customer satisfaction, and on delegating tasks I don\u2019t need to do to staff. I told my employees to seriously think about the ultimate world of \u2018easy and profitable\u2019 (while maintaining customer satisfaction)<\/strong>, and we all worked toward that. Well, not many CEOs say that to their employees, haha. These seemingly indirect efforts that don\u2019t directly increase sales became investments that later bore fruit, and sales multiplied many times.<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cWow\u2026 that\u2019s quite a passionate story. You must be grateful to your employees. And you\u2019re still aiming for that now?\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes. I\u2019m still making those kinds of \u2018(non-monetary) investments\u2019<\/strong>. The key is whether you can invest in future profits instead of being blinded by short-term gains. Then, the more your income grows, the more free time you\u2019ll have.<\/p>\n

I see\u2026 and finally, my husband concluded:<\/p>\n

Actually, I\u2019m basically a \u201clazy and unmotivated<\/strong>\u201d person. I always want to take it easy. That desire to take it easy is the energy that drives me to achieve maximum effect with minimum effort. That\u2019s why I can invest in the future.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Indeed. Hearing about my husband\u2019s student days, he was the opposite of my overly serious self, so I think, \u201cIf we had met back then, we wouldn\u2019t even have been friends.<\/strong>\u201d haha.<\/p>\n
