{"id":37738,"date":"2020-06-09T06:00:11","date_gmt":"2020-06-08T21:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37738"},"modified":"2021-06-01T22:49:27","modified_gmt":"2021-06-01T13:49:27","slug":"clutch-porsche-202006","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/clutch-porsche-202006\/","title":{"rendered":"Clutch Feel and Ease of Operation in Manual Transmission Cars (MT Cars)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">Also in Porsche Manual Cars<\/h3>\n<p>The car I currently drive most often is my very first beloved car, a BMW 320i (F30) manual transmission, but thanks to that, I\u2019ve also become able to drive manual-spec Porsche Boxster GTS (981) and 911 GT3 (991 late model) without any trouble.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-17426 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/IMG_3183-700x480-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18475\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/44C9E251-037C-4875-9F4E-F9BECFB2D94A-1280x854.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Until about a year ago, I couldn\u2019t drive manual cars at all, and I was half resigned, thinking, <strong>&#8220;With my poor motor skills, driving a manual car is impossible for life.&#8221;<\/strong> But as it turns out, it\u2019s really just a matter of getting used to it.<\/p>\n<p>After buying the 320i and driving it almost every day, my discomfort with manual operation disappeared, and now I can drive Porsche manual cars normally.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Clutch Operation and Seat Position<\/h3>\n<p>Just the other day, I drove the Boxster GTS (981) again after a while, and I thought once more, <strong>&#8220;After all, I find it easier to drive when the clutch is this heavy.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Back when I couldn\u2019t drive manuals, I used to complain a lot, saying things like, <strong>&#8220;What\u2019s with this clutch? It\u2019s so heavy! Is this some kind of muscle training?!&#8221;<\/strong> But now my feelings have completely reversed\u2026 (laughs)<\/p>\n<p>Regarding ease of clutch operation, I think the presence or absence of low-speed torque also affects it, but when it comes to clutch heaviness alone, I now believe that <strong>a somewhat heavier clutch is easier to operate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-14632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/IMG_0277-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The GT3 (991 late model) we have at home has a fairly light clutch, so at first I thought it would be easy to drive, but <strong>there\u2019s little resistance when releasing the clutch, making fine adjustments difficult,<\/strong> and at low speeds it sometimes feels like it might stall<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (of course, low-speed torque also plays a role)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18477\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/E8CA3B35-249E-4B9B-A75F-CB76D8279B85-1280x854.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In that respect, the 981 Boxster, among the few manual cars I\u2019ve driven so far<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (718 Boxster, GT3, Honda S660, Abarth 595, my brother\u2019s Legacy)<\/span>, has the firmest and heaviest clutch feel, making it the easiest to modulate.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the reason clutch operation on the 981 has become easier for me is largely because <strong>I\u2019ve finally been able to properly adjust the seat position to fit my body shape.<\/strong> Previously, no matter how I adjusted it, it never felt right, so I ended up sinking the seat down quite a bit to reach the clutch pedal fully.<\/p>\n<p>But with that setup, I had to put a lot of force into my foot every time I pressed the clutch, and I couldn\u2019t make any subtle adjustments when releasing the pedal.<\/p>\n<p>Later, after receiving comments from readers and advice from my husband, I found that <strong>setting the seat almost all the way forward and raising it just enough so my knees don\u2019t hit the steering wheel when pressing or releasing the clutch pedal<\/strong> made it much easier to reach the clutch naturally, and driving became significantly easier.<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (Hard to explain\u2026)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I used to say, <strong>&#8220;Women don\u2019t have the leg strength men do, so there\u2019s no way they can operate such a heavy clutch!&#8221;<\/strong> but it\u2019s not about strength. <strong>If you set the correct seat position so you can operate naturally without strain, you don\u2019t need extra force,<\/strong> and women can drive manual cars just fine.<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (Though I guess a reinforced clutch might require more strength, lol)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Racing drivers say that <em>seat position is incredibly important down to the millimeter,<\/em> and especially for manual cars, I really understand that now. It\u2019s like the basic form of a sport.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Porsche Clutches<\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of Porsche, the clutch pedal seems to have gotten lighter over the years. A reader once commented on the blog that the order of clutch heaviness is <strong>&#8220;993 \u2192 Cayman (981) \u2192 GT3 (991)&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>My husband has driven more manual cars than I have, including the rare \u201973 Carrera Porsche, so I asked him what he thinks about Porsche clutch operation:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">When the 981 Boxster GTS was first delivered to me, I struggled with the clutch\u2019s heaviness and the hard-to-find engagement point. It had been about 15 years since I last drove a manual, so it took a while to get the feel back. <strong>I think it took about 10,000 km before I fully tamed that Boxster and could handle any road or situation without trouble.<\/strong> It really took a lot of effort to get comfortable with the clutch.<\/p>\n<p>After getting used to that Boxster\u2019s clutch, I drove various Porsches and other manufacturers\u2019 manuals, and I can say Porsche clutches are generally on the heavier side.
