Porsche Track Experience<\/h3>\n

The other day, I participated in the Porsche Track Experience (PTE) held at the former Nanki-Shirahama Airport in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture here<\/a><\/strong>, driving a Boxster GTS (MT). The course I took was the Precision program, a full-day schedule from 8:15 AM to 5:20 PM, packed with intensive training.<\/p>\n

Since the start was early, I arrived the day before, but I was worried about the weather on the day. Fortunately, the rain that began the evening before stopped by dawn, and when I woke up, the sky was clear and blue.<\/strong> What a relief\u2026<\/p>\n

I usually have terrible luck with Mount Fuji and always seem to encounter heavy rain there, but strangely, whenever I visit Shirahama or Kumano, it often clears up even if rain is forecast.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I left the hotel early just in case, but when I arrived at the venue, it was only 7:30 AM, and there was still plenty of time before registration opened at 7:50. However, some participants had already arrived. Everyone\u2019s so punctual!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

After parking my car and wandering around until registration started, someone approached me saying, “Are you the person who runs the Porsche blog\u2026?<\/strong>” Apparently, they had been reading my blog for some time and even bought their current Porsche based on it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I rarely get to meet readers in person, so hearing that directly really made me feel grateful for keeping the blog going. Thank you so much.<\/p>\n

Soon registration began, followed by the opening ceremony and photos, and then the program officially started.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The program began with a classroom session led by the instructors. The last time I attended the Warm UP Light+ course, which was a special half-day program, there wasn\u2019t much classroom time, but this time there was a session to learn the basics of driving, including videos.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First, they explained the purpose of the Precision program, saying, “As the name suggests, it\u2019s about improving precision.<\/strong>” That was the first time I really understood the meaning of \u201cPrecision\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\n

The goal is not to succeed \u201conce out of ten attempts,\u201d but to improve from 5, 7, 9 times out of 10, so that you can deliver consistent performance every time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They emphasized that repetition is key to improving precision<\/strong>, so the program involves repeating the same training over and over.<\/p>\n

They also gave a clear explanation about weight transfer when cornering. When you\u2019re on the accelerator, the car\u2019s weight shifts to the rear, making the front lighter. Since the front tires are responsible for changing direction, if they\u2019re light, the car won\u2019t turn well.<\/p>\n

Therefore, when cornering, you must either brake or lift off the accelerator to shift weight to the front and help the car turn.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is something my husband often tells me, but hearing it from an instructor made me think, “Ah, it really is true!<\/strong>” (Not that I doubted him\u2026 haha)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

They also explained that cars move in three dimensions\u2014front to back, up and down, left and right\u2014making their behavior quite complex. To control the car well, it\u2019s crucial to set your driving position properly before you start driving.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They taught that your body should be firmly fixed in the seat, you should be able to operate the steering wheel without issues, and you should always be ready to control the car no matter what. (Again, something my husband often reminds me of\u2026 haha)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Professional drivers even adjust their driving position daily to match their physical condition.<\/strong> If the position isn\u2019t right, lap times can be slower by 0.1 or even 1 second, so they make fine adjustments every time.<\/p>\n

Wow\u2026 professionals are amazing.<\/p>\n

We also watched videos explaining the correct driving position and how to hold the steering wheel. I realized I was much more tense than I thought.<\/strong> They looked so relaxed that I wondered, \u201cCan they really drive fast like that?\u201d<\/p>\n

I clearly saw how wrong my usual position and grip were, and how much unnecessary tension I was putting in my body.<\/strong> I even gripped the steering wheel so hard that veins popped out on my arms (laughs).<\/p>\n

\"\"(Gripping too hard \u2191)<\/span><\/p>\n

By holding the steering wheel correctly and staying relaxed, you can handle sudden evasive maneuvers smoothly.<\/strong> That really made sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next page \u2192 Training begins: First up, lane changes!<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

\u2460 Lane Change<\/h3>\n

Next came practical training. Our group started with lane changes. But this wasn\u2019t just ordinary lane changing\u2014it was about emergency evasive lane changes when a car suddenly cuts in.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We gathered outside the cars to watch the instructor\u2019s demonstration, then received explanations about the course, car operation, and target speeds. As explained in the classroom, this program focuses on \u201cPrecision,\u201d so the goal is to improve accuracy to deliver stable performance anytime.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We were told, \u201cGradually increase your speed, check your timing, get as close as possible to the target speed, then lift off the accelerator and steer to change lanes.\u201d At this point, everyone, including me, looked very anxious (laughs).<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no way I can do that\u2026 (-_-)<\/span><\/p>\n

The instructor reassured us, “Everyone looks worried at first, but don\u2019t worry, just give it a try, haha.<\/strong>” We tried once, but my first attempt was slow and cautious.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cNow let\u2019s gradually increase the speed!<\/strong>\u201d the instructor advised. When I tried, I overshot the target speed. Then, when told to stabilize the speed and get as close as possible to the target, I focused so much on speed that my steering was late, and I nearly hit the cones.<\/p>\n

Improving precision is really tough\u2026<\/p>\n

Of course, each participant had different challenges, but the instructors gave spot-on advice tailored to each person, which was impressive.<\/strong> (Well, naturally!)<\/span> My personal challenge was \u201csteering technique<\/strong>.\u201d The instructor said:<\/p>\n

\u201cYour speed is stable, so focus on steering. You don\u2019t have to hug the inside line so much (laughs). Don\u2019t be afraid\u2014try turning the wheel more sharply.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Right, this isn\u2019t the Royu Driveway, so I don\u2019t have to worry about clipping points here (laughs).<\/p>\n

\"\"(A fellow group member kindly took these photos for me, so I\u2019m using many of them here. Thank you!)<\/span><\/p>\n

After about an hour and roughly 15 repetitions, I gradually got the hang of it and felt some runs were \u201cgood!\u201d Everyone looked refreshed and happy afterward.<\/p>\n

During the post-training summary, the instructor said something memorable:<\/p>\n

I think everyone got a sense of \u201cI did it!\u201d at some point. The key is to improve precision so you can do it every time. That requires repetition. Also, the importance of visual information<\/strong> became clear. Pro drivers check the course surface and car condition every lap, marking the best braking points down to the meter.<\/strong> It\u2019s like taking continuous photos. Although their eyes face forward, they adjust timing using \u201csigns\u201d and \u201cmarkers\u201d in their peripheral vision. The difference between someone who can do this to the meter and someone who can do it to 50 cm is huge. When you drive on a circuit, please try to be aware of this.<\/p>\n

Hearing that made me think again, “Pros are amazing\u2026 truly amazing.<\/strong>”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2461 Slalom<\/h3>\n

The next training was slalom. First, we watched the instructor\u2019s demo and were told to focus on weight transfer.<\/strong> The key is to rhythmically accelerate, lift off, and turn, driving in harmony with the car.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Can I really do this\u2026? (-_-)<\/span><\/p>\n

To feel how the car behaves differently in 1st and 2nd gears, we started in 1st gear (PDK drivers switched to manual mode)<\/span>. But on the first run, I was so focused on avoiding cones that I didn\u2019t even check my speed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

At the end, I glanced at the speedometer and saw only about 40 km\/h, though it felt like I was definitely going over 50 km\/h.<\/strong> I realized it\u2019s scary to push the speed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t suddenly lift off the accelerator; try easing off more gradually.<\/strong> Also, steer more sharply. Don\u2019t be afraid\u2014turning more will let you feel the car\u2019s leaning motion!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

I thought, \u201cSo much to work on\u2026\u201d but watched other participants and mentally rehearsed before trying again, focusing on the advice.<\/p>\n

Great! Now let\u2019s increase speed and try 2nd gear!<\/p>\n

\u201cUgh, more to do! (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!\u201d I thought, but when I tried 2nd gear, I noticed less engine braking and a different rhythm. Also, the GTS\u2019s \u201cbobbobobo\u201d sound when lifting off the accelerator was really satisfying\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

I felt like a racer attacking a series of curves (laughs)!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Then the instructor gave everyone this advice:<\/p>\n

Everyone is leaning forward and gripping the steering tightly, so besides turning the wheel, you\u2019re also supporting your arms and body, making steering less smooth. You\u2019re probably pulling the wheel when turning, but you should push it instead.<\/strong> Press your back into the seat to stabilize, place your left foot on the footrest to brace yourself, and push the steering wheel. This will make steering easier!<\/p>\n

When we all tried this, steering suddenly became much smoother, and everyone\u2019s driving improved dramatically.<\/p>\n

Instructors really are amazing\u2026!<\/span>(Of course!)<\/span><\/p>\n

We probably did the slalom over 10 times. Each time, I had moments where I thought, “That was good!<\/strong>” Feeling in sync with the car and driving rhythmically was so satisfying.<\/p>\n

At the same time, I realized again how difficult it is to reproduce good driving and improve precision.<\/strong> After the slalom, the instructor summarized:<\/p>\n

By the end, everyone had the feel, but in the first or second run, the good driving from the lane change disappeared and they reverted to old habits.<\/strong> On a circuit, you don\u2019t have time to practice laps to improve precision. You have to perform your best from the first lap.<\/strong> So in the afternoon\u2019s practical session, try not to forget this feeling and aim to perform at your best right from the start.<\/p>\n

That really hit home. I\u2019m not a racer, but if I\u2019m lucky enough to drive a Porsche with such amazing performance, I want to be able to unleash that performance and deliver stable driving anytime.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That wrapped up the morning session, and we took a lunch break. By then, I was quite tired, but it was a pleasant fatigue, and I felt a sense of camaraderie with the other participants\u2014like being at a sports camp. (Though I was never on any sports teams, so I don\u2019t really know what that\u2019s like.)<\/span><\/p>\n
