Oil Changes on the Porsche GT3<\/h3>\n

A reader recently sent in a question for the blog.<\/p>\n

I switched from a 718 Cayman to a 718 Spyder. In your article, Porsche 911 GT3 One-Year Service at the Dealership: What Did It Cost? How Much Did the PCCB Wear?<\/a>, I didn\u2019t see a transmission oil change listed on the one-year service invoice. Did the dealership change the transmission oil at the first service? If you don\u2019t mind, I\u2019d love to hear your thoughts on oil-related maintenance\u2014it would be a great reference.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t spotted a 718 Spyder on the road yet, but deliveries must have started already. That\u2019s exciting\u2014I\u2019d love to see one in person!<\/p>\n

I asked my husband about oil changes and related maintenance, so I thought I\u2019d share what he had to say.<\/p>\n

The short answer is that my husband did not change the transmission oil during the GT3\u2019s one-year service<\/strong>. Here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n

Regardless of the model, I try to follow the owner\u2019s manual and the dealer\u2019s recommendations as closely as possible. According to the maintenance schedule<\/a>, the transmission oil should be changed every 180,000 km or 12 years, so I left it as is.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s said the same about other things, too\u2014not just the GT3. Whether he\u2019s caring for the Boxster\u2019s soft top<\/a> or breaking in the Panamera<\/a>, he checks the owner\u2019s manual along the way. He often puts it this way:<\/p>\n

Especially with a sports-car maker like Porsche, the engineers and staff put a huge amount of thought into each car, testing and refining it again and again before it goes on sale in the best possible condition.
\nSo when the owner\u2019s manual says, \u201cThis is the recommended procedure<\/strong>,\u201d I believe the best approach is for drivers to follow it\u2014both when driving and when maintaining the car.<\/p>\n

Break-In and Engine Oil Changes<\/h3>\n

That answered the question about transmission oil, so I asked him about engine oil changes, too.<\/p>\n

I followed the owner\u2019s manual for the break-in period. On the GT3, I changed the oil and filter once after completing the 1,500 km break-in. I changed them again at the one-year service. In general, I aim to change the oil at around 7,000 km, shortening the interval a little if I do a lot of track driving or get stuck in traffic, and extending it slightly when most of my driving is on long trips.
\nThe maintenance schedule calls for an oil change every 10,000 km on the GT3 (15,000 km on regular models), or every 5,000 km for track use. But Japan\u2019s hot, humid climate and short trips make me prefer a somewhat shorter interval.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s his approach.<\/p>\n

When it comes to engine oil, we drive all our Porsches quite a bit, so we change the oil after the break-in period. For households that mainly use their cars for everyday driving, though, following the owner\u2019s manual may be all that\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n

My husband went on:<\/p>\n

I checked the 2019 GT3 owner\u2019s manual, and it says that the break-in period for both the GT3 and GT3 RS is \u201c1,500 km, without exceeding 7,000 rpm<\/strong>.\u201d The dealer gave me the same instructions when I took delivery.
\nBut the English-language 2018 GT3 manual says \u201c3,000 km, 4,000 rpm.\u201d So it\u2019s possible that something changed in the engine specification starting with my 2019 model year GT3, or Porsche changed its break-in guidance<\/strong>.
\nDetails like that can change, which is why I try to read the owner\u2019s manual and follow its instructions.<\/p>\n

That makes sense.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of different opinions, but when in doubt, it\u2019s probably best to start by checking the owner\u2019s manual.<\/p>\n
