{"id":37750,"date":"2019-11-30T06:00:24","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T21:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37750"},"modified":"2019-11-29T20:47:59","modified_gmt":"2019-11-29T11:47:59","slug":"boxster-porsche-truck-experience-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/boxster-porsche-truck-experience-2\/","title":{"rendered":"I Had No Idea About Porsche Until Now \u2013 What I Learned from Porsche\u2019s Driving School"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">J-Turn<\/h3>\n<p>The other day, I wrote the first part of my article about participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.porsche.co.jp\/psdssp\/schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Porsche Track Experience (PTE)<\/a> with my Boxster <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(morning program)<\/span>, and today I want to share about the latter half <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(part of the afternoon program)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"XJ6LDgA671\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/pte-shirahama-1\/\">\u5973\u6027\u3060\u3063\u3066\u300c\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u4e57\u308a\u300d\u3068\u8a00\u308f\u308c\u305f\u3044\uff01 &#8211; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u306e\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d3\u30f3\u30b0\u30b9\u30af\u30fc\u30eb\u306b\u884c\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/pte-shirahama-1\/embed\/#?secret=XJ6LDgA671\" data-secret=\"XJ6LDgA671\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" title=\"&#8220;\u5973\u6027\u3060\u3063\u3066\u300c\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u4e57\u308a\u300d\u3068\u8a00\u308f\u308c\u305f\u3044\uff01 &#8211; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u306e\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d3\u30f3\u30b0\u30b9\u30af\u30fc\u30eb\u306b\u884c\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30ba\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The first training session in the afternoon was the &#8220;<strong>J-Turn<\/strong>.&#8221; Since I had never heard of a J-Turn before, I couldn\u2019t picture it, so I looked it up online on the spot and found it described as &#8220;<strong>a deliberate 180-degree spin turn from reverse driving<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Later, the instructor explained that it was to &#8220;<strong>experience understeer\/oversteer and learn vehicle control<\/strong>.&#8221; By the way, the training course was sprinkled with water to make understeer more likely, creating large puddles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15809\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5944-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, just hearing about it didn\u2019t help me visualize it well, so I first watched a demonstration by the instructor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6037-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The instructor showed two versions: &#8220;<strong>a version where understeer occurs but no steering input is made to correct the car\u2019s behavior<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>a version where steering input is applied when understeer occurs to change the car\u2019s direction<\/strong>.&#8221; More than the car\u2019s behavior, I was surprised by the intense spray of water.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Wow, that\u2019s intense\u2026 No way I could do that\u2026 (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cAnyway, accelerate boldly to about <strong>XX km\/h<\/strong> until the marker cones, then ease off the accelerator, pause briefly, and turn the wheel sharply all at once. If you turn the wheel while accelerating, the car will just turn normally without understeer, so be careful. And everyone, please keep your windows closed at all times. Otherwise, things will get messy, lol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The instructor said this, and we got into our cars to start the first run. But since I was nervous, I ended up just <strong>gently steering along the cones around the big puddle without attempting any J-Turn<\/strong> (lol).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15838\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6050-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15839\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6051-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15840\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6052-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What was that all about\u2026 (-_-)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cTry going faster. Also, ease off the accelerator, pause briefly, then turn the wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following this advice, I increased my speed and paused before turning the wheel, and near the end, understeer occurred.<\/p>\n<p>With a loud tire screech of &#8216;<strong>GAGAGAGAGA\u2026!<\/strong>&#8216;, the car slid sideways with a force I had never experienced before.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Scary\u2026 (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I kept turning the wheel, the car\u2019s direction changed, and I felt relieved returning to the line when the instructor said,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cThat was\u2026 understeer, but as you increased the steering angle, you ended up with oversteer near the end. This is different from the understeer intended in J-Turn training, so <strong>try turning the wheel sharply from the start to induce understeer right away<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I realized, &#8220;<strong>I was too cautious turning the wheel, so my behavior was different from the instructor\u2019s demo<\/strong>,&#8221; and on the next run, I turned sharply from the start. Then, with the tire screech &#8216;<strong>GAGAGAGAGA\u2026!<\/strong>&#8216;, I successfully experienced the sequence of &#8220;<strong>understeer, a sharp change in car direction, and recovery<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">\u2026I did it!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15843\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6062-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15842\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6059-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6060-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cYes, that\u2019s it! Don\u2019t forget that feeling and try again. This time, focus on making the transition from understeer to recovery smoother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tried focusing on that, but concentrating on recovery made me hesitant to turn the wheel fully, so I couldn\u2019t induce understeer well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15841\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6054-1280x854.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wow\u2026 improving precision is really tough. I tried the J-Turn about 10 times, but <strong>if time allowed, I would have loved to do 20 or 30 runs until I fully got the feel of it.<\/strong> When the training ended and I got out of the car to hear the instructor\u2019s summary, I was shocked.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">My Boxster is covered in mud!!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15845\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5975-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15846\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5940-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My once pristine Boxster was instantly coated in mud. I thought, &#8220;<strong>I wonder if the water truck waiting over there could spray it clean\u2026<\/strong>&#8221; but that was obviously impossible, lol.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15847\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6036-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(\u2191The water truck. It stayed on standby and refilled water throughout the training.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The instructor shared this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u201cNow you understand why I said to <strong>keep your windows closed<\/strong>, right? (laughs) Many people experienced car behavior they\u2019d never felt before, but if that much understeer happened on a real road, <strong>it would definitely cause a serious accident hitting oncoming cars or guardrails<\/strong>. I hope you now understand what happens when you take a curve at that speed on a rainy day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Improving driving technique isn\u2019t just about driving faster; it\u2019s also about &#8220;<strong>fully understanding how the car behaves in various situations and always driving safely no matter what<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After the J-Turn, there was time to test drive Porsche\u2019s new models, including the new 911 (992), Cayenne, and Panamera GTS, and I also tried the full throttle challenge. I\u2019ll cover those in another article.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/boxster-porsche-truck-experience-2\/2\/\"><strong>Next page \u2192 Summary of Porsche Track Experience\u2026<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Summary of Porsche Track Experience<\/h3>\n<p>Here are my thoughts after participating in the Porsche Track Experience (PTE) Precision program.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">1. I Didn\u2019t Know Porsche Yet<\/h4>\n<p>Even though I drive a Porsche almost every day, I deeply realized that &#8220;<strong>I still didn\u2019t really know Porsche<\/strong>.&#8221; Modern Porsches are easier to drive, and even someone like me can enjoy driving them.<\/p>\n<p>So, every time I drove, I felt &#8220;<strong>what a great car it is<\/strong>,&#8221; but I truly experienced that Porsche is a car with <strong>performance beyond anything I could have imagined<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This applies to handling, acceleration, suspension, stability\u2026 in many aspects. I learned it\u2019s a car that can do so much more than I thought\u2014many times over.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you can unleash that potential depends <strong>entirely on the driver\u2019s skill.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If I have the chance to drive such a fantastic Porsche, I want to improve my skills to maximize its performance. If I don\u2019t, then I think, &#8220;<strong>there\u2019s no need for me to drive a high-performance Porsche. Any other car would do.<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">2. Driving Skills Improve<\/h4>\n<p>I was taught about driving position, steering wheel placement and grip, weight transfer, pushing the steering wheel when cornering, and just being aware of these dramatically improved my driving. My husband often says,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">\u201cLike tennis or golf, every sport has a basic form. Driving is the same. You have to thoroughly internalize the basics first. <strong>If you don\u2019t master the basics, you won\u2019t get better at driving.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>and I finally understood what he meant.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, everyday driving isn\u2019t motorsport, and if you just drive to get from A to B, you might not need to think that much. But <strong>if you\u2019re driving a Porsche\u2026 a top-tier sports car\u2026<\/strong> mastering the basics will let you enjoy it so much more.<\/p>\n<p>On the way home from Shirahama, I consciously applied what I learned. I relaxed my grip on the steering wheel, fixed my back against the seat when cornering, and pushed the steering wheel. The result was <strong>smooth driving unlike my usual style, with no unnecessary tension in my body, making it very comfortable throughout.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15864\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6003-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">3. Driving That\u2019s Gentle on the Car<\/h4>\n<p>My husband often says, \u201c<strong>Despite the mileage, the tire tread barely wears down<\/strong>,\u201d which surprised the dealer\u2019s maintenance staff, as I wrote about before. After attending PTE, I understood why.<\/p>\n<p>Driving fast requires smooth, gentle inputs that don\u2019t strain the car. The instructor often said, &#8220;<strong>Be smoother and gentler with the accelerator<\/strong>.&#8221; This kind of driving reduces stress on tires, accelerator, and brakes, which <strong>is ultimately kinder to the car and helps it last longer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This applies to everything\u2014pushing too hard isn\u2019t good. The natural way is the best way.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">4. Realizing It\u2019s a Hobby Supported by Family<\/h4>\n<p>This time, unlike usual, <strong>my husband took care of our daughters the whole time, allowing me to participate in the program.<\/strong> Since our kids are still small, \u201ckid issues\u201d always come along wherever we go.<\/p>\n<p>For me, a mother who feels this daily, having &#8220;<strong>a whole day to myself away from the kids to join the program<\/strong>&#8221; was a precious and grateful time. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(Though I did worry about the bathroom or if they had any accidents, lol.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DSC_7175-1280x827.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"827\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, I\u2019m grateful that &#8220;<strong>my husband let me participate using his first Porsche, the precious Boxster GTS<\/strong>.&#8221; Since I\u2019m still a poor driver, there was a risk I might break the clutch or bump something, but he said, &#8220;<strong>Take the Boxster and go!<\/strong>&#8221; Thank you so much.<\/p>\n<p>This day made me realize that enjoying a hobby is only possible with family support.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Porsche Track Experience \u2013 Highly Recommended!<\/h3>\n<p>For Porsche owners and enthusiasts, if possible, I highly recommend taking the Porsche Track Experience (PTE).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course, you can enjoy your Porsche without attending a driving school.<\/strong> Also, if you just want to drive for fun and don\u2019t feel the need to go that far, there\u2019s no pressure to join. The cost is also high at 137,500 yen <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(for Shirahama this time)<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>However, the program itself is very interesting, and immediately after attending, my driving changed and I enjoyed driving my Porsche even more.
