{"id":37752,"date":"2019-12-02T06:00:43","date_gmt":"2019-12-01T21:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37752"},"modified":"2019-12-02T08:30:26","modified_gmt":"2019-12-01T23:30:26","slug":"full-throttle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/full-throttle\/","title":{"rendered":"Full Throttle Acceleration in the Boxster! \u2013 Full Throttle Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">Full Throttle Challenge<\/h3>\n<p>Recently, I\u2019ve been sharing articles about participating in the Porsche Track Experience (PTE) held in Shirahama, and at the end, everyone took part in a <strong>400m full throttle challenge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"yxOzZfbvpl\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/pte-shirahama-1\/\">\u5973\u6027\u3060\u3063\u3066\u300c\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u4e57\u308a\u300d\u3068\u8a00\u308f\u308c\u305f\u3044\uff01 &#8211; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u306e\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d3\u30f3\u30b0\u30b9\u30af\u30fc\u30eb\u306b\u884c\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/pte-shirahama-1\/embed\/#?secret=yxOzZfbvpl\" data-secret=\"yxOzZfbvpl\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" title=\"&#8220;\u5973\u6027\u3060\u3063\u3066\u300c\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u4e57\u308a\u300d\u3068\u8a00\u308f\u308c\u305f\u3044\uff01 &#8211; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u306e\u30c9\u30e9\u30a4\u30d3\u30f3\u30b0\u30b9\u30af\u30fc\u30eb\u306b\u884c\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30ba\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At the usual Porsche Track Experience (PTE) held at Fuji Speedway, this full throttle challenge doesn\u2019t take place. <strong>It\u2019s a program only possible because it\u2019s held on the site of a former airport with a long runway of about 2 km.<\/strong> I heard some participants chose the Shirahama PTE specifically because they could try the full throttle challenge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15863\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5915-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There was a brief explanation about the full throttle challenge during the morning classroom session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">Everyone, I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve never done a <strong>full throttle challenge<\/strong> before. Since this is a rare opportunity, <strong>let\u2019s try using launch control.<\/strong> For recent models, put it in Sport Plus mode, press the brake firmly with your left foot and the accelerator with your right foot, then quickly release the brake at the right moment for a rocket start.<\/p>\n<p>That was the explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing that, I thought, \u201cWait, do manual cars have launch control? No, they don\u2019t\u2026 I\u2019ll probably just stall out\u2026 <strong>What should I do if I\u2019m driving a manual?<\/strong>\u201d Feeling uneasy, I finished the classroom session and headed to my car, when Ryo Ogawa, an instructor who raced in this year\u2019s Porsche Carrera Cup Japan (PCCJ), called out to me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">Hey, you look tense! What\u2019s wrong?<\/p>\n<p>I said, \u201cWell, I drive a manual, so I don\u2019t have launch control\u2026 I\u2019m really worried if I can do this properly\u2026\u201d  <\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">Right, manuals don\u2019t have that feature, so just start by engaging the clutch normally. Once it\u2019s connected, floor the accelerator and accelerate with all your might. Usually, when driving a Boxster, you don\u2019t get to pull first gear that hard, so this is a great chance to feel the car\u2019s true power!<\/p>\n<p>Hearing that, I felt relieved and was able to head to the training. Later, I chatted with Ogawa instructor a bit more, and he said,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">It would be really cool if a woman could master a manual Porsche and even drift it. You should definitely try the next level, g-Force, after Precision!<\/p>\n<p>He said that with such a fresh, friendly smile that I couldn\u2019t help but reply, \u201c<strong>Yes! I\u2019ll do it!<\/strong>\u201d (lol)<\/p>\n<p>Back to the story, all the cars lined up in a single file and headed to the starting point for the full throttle challenge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15854\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5977-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While everyone else was excited about \u201c<strong>trying launch control!<\/strong>\u201d, I was thinking,<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">\u201cI\u2019ve never done a sudden launch before\u2026 what if I break the clutch\u2026 how far should I pull the revs before shifting\u2026 is it bad to hit the redline\u2026 but I won\u2019t have time to look at the tach, so I\u2019ll have to feel it by sound\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mind was racing, and at that moment, I really regretted not joining with my PDK Panamera. I was deep in thought when suddenly it was my turn.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15853\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_6067.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You only get one chance. The staff said, \u201c<strong>3, 2, 1, start<\/strong>,\u201d and I waited for the moment. The wait felt incredibly long, making me even more nervous.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5983-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then the countdown \u201c3, 2, 1\u201d began, and at the start, I carefully engaged the clutch\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Full acceleration &#038; floor it!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Thinking, \u201c<strong>This is the first time I\u2019ve floored the Boxster like this!<\/strong>,\u201d I listened to the engine sound and shifted up through 2nd and 3rd gears. Suddenly, the finish line came into view, and I thought, \u201c<strong>Wait, I\u2019m still in 3rd, should I shift to 4th\u2026?<\/strong>\u201d I shifted to 4th just as the 400m ended.<\/p>\n<p>It took about 15 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t feel fast at all. Previously, at the Porsche Track Experience WarmUp in a Panamera Turbo, there was a moment of full acceleration up to 80 km\/h, and my body was pressed hard into the seat, the car briefly felt like it lifted off the ground \u2014 that acceleration was hundreds of times scarier.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, I returned to the parking lot feeling disappointed, thinking, \u201c<strong>Ah, I was so tense and stiff, it didn\u2019t go well at all.<\/strong>\u201d I posted a video of my nervous, stiff driving on Twitter if you want to check it out (lol).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"ja\">I recorded the PTE full throttle challenge with a GoPro, but I was so tense and stiff, couldn\u2019t pull it properly, and wasn\u2019t fast at all. Lots to improve\u2026 No wonder my time was slow. I didn\u2019t even get up to speed,\u201d he said, \u201c<strong>I\u2019d love to try the full throttle challenge in a GT3 \u2014 that must be insanely fast!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Definitely (lol).<\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s rare to get a chance to accelerate full throttle like that, so I\u2019m grateful for the experience. That wrapped up the full day\u2019s PTE program with the full throttle challenge.<\/p>\n<p>At the opening ceremony in the morning, everyone looked a bit anxious, but <strong>by the end, everyone\u2019s faces were full of satisfaction and accomplishment.<\/strong> I\u2019m really glad I took the plunge and came. At the awards ceremony, the oldest participant in our group received an award <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(probably in their 70s?)<\/span>, and seeing their impressive presence made me sincerely wish to age gracefully like that.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I\u2019m still not satisfied with how I did in the full throttle challenge \u2014 I want to try it again!
