Porsche, New Models, Test Drive<\/h3>\n

An article about the Porsche Track Experience (PTE) side event I recently attended in Shirahama. On that day, there was a special opportunity to test drive Porsche\u2019s new models<\/strong>. The cars I got to drive were:<\/p>\n

\u30fbNew 911 S
\n\u30fbNew 911 4S
\n\u30fbCayenne S
\n\u30fbPanamera GTS
\n\u30fbPanamera GTS Sport Turismo<\/p>\n

Five cars in total. I thought I might only get to drive one, but luckily, each of us got to drive all five in turn. (The group was small, so that helped.)<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The test course was a short circuit combining straights and corners, taking about 20\u201330 seconds per lap<\/strong>, and we did two laps. Beforehand, the instructor explained:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the first lap, drive in Normal mode, then on the second lap switch to Sport or Sport+ mode to really feel the difference. Also, on the straights, don\u2019t hesitate to push the pedal and accelerate up to 100 km\/h. This is an experience you can\u2019t get on a dealer test drive, so make the most of it!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Wow, I was excited and nervous.<\/p>\n

First up was the Panamera GTS Sport Turismo<\/strong>. Thinking about it, it was actually my first time driving a Panamera GTS. When I started this blog, my goal was to one day buy a Panamera GTS myself<\/strong>, so I was pretty thrilled to finally get behind the wheel of this long-admired car.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The engine in the Panamera GTS is a 4.0-liter V8 twin-turbo, the same as in the Panamera Turbo, but its maximum output is limited to 460 ps<\/strong> (the Turbo produces 550 ps)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Curious about how it differs from the Turbo, I started the GTS engine and was surprised by its light and restrained sound. It was nothing like the roaring \u201cVroooom!!<\/strong>\u201d beastly sound of the Turbo.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Once on the move, it felt very nimble. The Panamera Turbo has a heavy, solid feel, moving its weight with powerful force, but the Panamera GTS felt like a lean, muscular body with all the excess fat trimmed away.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The handling was very sharp and responsive<\/strong>. Of course, the Turbo is also sharp, but the GTS felt even more precise, turning smoothly and effortlessly, making it very easy to drive.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/strong><\/p>\n

And of course, the Panamera GTS\u2019s acceleration was impressive. On the straights, it reached 100 km\/h in no time<\/strong>, so I couldn\u2019t floor the accelerator too much, but the acceleration was smooth and exhilarating.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Panamera Turbo, when you press the accelerator, the body sinks firmly toward the ground, delivering a grounded acceleration sensation, and the engine emits a deep, thunderous roar. The GTS, by contrast, feels lighter and more agile.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even though they share the same engine, the Panamera GTS and Turbo each have their own unique appeal.<\/p>\n

After that, I also drove the Cayenne S and Panamera GTS, but with only two laps of a 20\u201330 second course, it was over in a flash. I was left wishing, \u201cI wish I could do at least five laps\u2014there\u2019s so much more I want to experience!<\/strong>\u201d as the test drive ended.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Still, I thought my husband would have been able to pick up a lot of information even from this brief minute-long drive. \u201cIf only we had left the kids with our parents and he could have joined me, that would have been great,\u201d<\/strong> I thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New 911 Test Drive<\/h3>\n

Now, the moment we\u2019d all been waiting for: the test drive of the new 911 (992). Actually, neither I nor my husband had driven the new 911 until this day.<\/strong> Even though I call myself a Porsche blogger (laughs).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

There were two 911s available to test drive that day, so I started with the 911 4S.<\/strong> I got in the driver\u2019s seat, closed the door, and started the engine.<\/p>\n

Vroooom!<\/span><\/p>\n

The sound was quite loud. Even the idling noise was louder than I expected.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Once I started driving, this is just my personal impression, but the handling, body rigidity, and engine sound gave me a fleeting feeling like I was driving a 718 Cayman.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I took a corner, and without even consciously shifting weight, the car turned smoothly and cleanly. Acceleration from almost a standstill was incredible, even though I wasn\u2019t pushing the pedal hard. The all-wheel drive probably added to that feeling of stability.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Still, the 911 4S test drive was over in no time, and I found myself thinking, \u201cI barely had time to really feel the 911\u2026<\/strong>\u201d while waiting for my turn. So, on a whim, I asked the instructor:<\/p>\n

\u201cI just drove the 911, but with my skill level, I couldn\u2019t really experience what the 911 is all about. For the next 911 S test drive, would it be possible for me to ride as a passenger while the instructor drives?\u201d<\/p>\n

Usually, they don\u2019t do that, but since the group was small and there was still plenty of time after all the test drives, they kindly agreed to this special request.<\/p>\n

Yay! (\uff9f\u2200\uff9f)!!<\/span><\/p>\n

So, I got to ride shotgun for the 911 S, driven by the instructor.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When I got in the passenger seat, the instructor said, \u201cDon\u2019t worry, I won\u2019t be driving that fast, haha.<\/strong>\u201d I replied, \u201cY-yeah, right\u2026\u201d and the car took off\u2014but then, suddenly, an incredible burst of acceleration!!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As we approached a corner, the instructor still hadn\u2019t hit the brakes. \u201cWait, no way, no brakes yet!? Can we really turn!?<\/strong>\u201d I was nervous, but then the brakes were applied much later than I expected, and the steering wheel was sharply turned\u2026!<\/p>\n

Wow!! This is what a 911 really is!! (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!!<\/span><\/p>\n

The 911\u2019s rear end swayed, then it sharply turned with a \u201cgyuin\u201d motion. It cornered amazingly well! What was I thinking earlier, feeling it was like a 718? I felt embarrassed by my own driving skills.<\/p>\n

On a longer straight, we stopped the car and then accelerated hard. My body was pressed into the seat, and the acceleration was so intense it felt like riding a roller coaster\u2014almost scary.<\/p>\n

So, this is what 911 acceleration feels like\u2026!<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, far down the straight, the instructor slammed on the brakes and sharply turned the corner. Amazing. I couldn\u2019t help but say, \u201cThat was full acceleration followed by full braking, wasn\u2019t it!<\/strong>\u201d and the instructor replied:<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no, that was Normal mode, and I was only pressing the brakes about halfway.\u201d<\/p>\n

What!? Seriously!? (\uff9f\u0434\uff9f)!<\/span><\/p>\n

On the second lap, I had been focused on the road ahead, but when I glanced at the instructor, I noticed how relaxed he was holding the steering wheel.<\/p>\n

He drove with the ease of a casual city drive, yet the driving was incredibly sharp and dynamic.<\/strong> I even felt like the steering had become lighter than when I drove. The quick, light steering inputs unleashed a torrent of acceleration. Incredible.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The two laps flew by, and when I got out of the car, other participants asked, \u201cHow was it!?\u201d I was so excited I could only say, \u201cIt was amazing! Pros really are on another level!!<\/strong>\u201d (laughs)<\/p>\n

Afterwards, others also experienced rides with the instructor, and everyone got out of the car saying, \u201cSo relaxed yet so fast, amazing, pros are in a league of their own!<\/strong>\u201d with great excitement.<\/p>\n

What an incredible experience.<\/p>\n

The Power of a Professional Driver<\/h3>\n

Professional drivers are on a completely different level. I can only imagine how incredible it must be to be an F1-winning driver.<\/p>\n

During the Porsche Track Experience (PTE) training, I thought, \u201cI\u2019ve learned to drive a manual and maybe I\u2019m at level 2 out of 10 now.<\/strong>\u201d But no, it\u2019s not 10 levels\u2014it\u2019s more like 100, and I\u2019ve only just reached level 2! (laughs)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

If I get the chance, I\u2019d love to have a professional drive our Boxster or GT3 and learn from the passenger seat.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not a young aspiring pro driver, just a Porsche-loving mother of two in my 40s, but I want to keep improving my driving skills to get closer to being a true Porsche driver.<\/p>\n
