Even if you have to arrange childcare, go give it a try.<\/p>\n<p>A reader also sent me a video of a professional explaining steering technique. I watched it and did a little practice in our BMW, so I was reasonably prepared.<\/p>\n<p>That morning, I dropped our eldest daughter off at kindergarten, then worked on the blog. I finished sooner than expected, and with the sun shining, I decided it was a perfect day to go for a drive.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t sure I wanted to put our younger daughter in daycare just for this<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (little ones can pick up bugs so easily in winter)<\/span>, so I brought my two-year-old along. That meant no spirited driving\u2014safety came first, of course!<\/p>\n<p>After getting used to the clutch in our 981 Boxster, the 911 GT3\u2019s clutch feels very light. But the GT3 itself still has that unmistakable, solidly built feel.<\/p>\n<p>This was my first time driving the GT3 entirely on my own<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (my husband usually drives alongside me or comes along for the ride)<\/span>. Rather than psyching myself up with a \u201cYou\u2019ve got to do this!\u201d pep talk, I tried to stay calm and relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>I think I\u2019ve learned to approach it that way thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/boxster-porsche-truck-experience-2\/\">taking part in Porsche Track Experience, Porsche\u2019s driving school<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (Porsche Track Experience)<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16044\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6210-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I used to feel so intimidated by the clutch and gear changes in a manual GT3 that it was almost laughable. But there\u2019s really no need to get nervous. The one thing that did worry me at first was that, although the car has an auto-hold function for hill starts, I couldn\u2019t find a green \u201cHOLD\u201d light anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Every time I stopped on a slope, I\u2019d set off wondering, \u201c<strong>Is HOLD on right now?<\/strong>\u201d Once, on a gentle incline, I simply tried to pull away normally\u2014and stalled. The GT3 doesn\u2019t restart automatically after a stall, so I switched the engine off, started it again, and set off more carefully.<\/p>\n<p>I thought I was getting pretty good at driving the GT3, but it seems I still had a thing or two to learn (laughs).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Taking the GT3 to Royu Driveway<\/h3>\n<p>On the public roads leading to Royu Driveway, I tried the kind of satisfying upshift that\u2019s said to feel almost like a PDK shift. But <strong>my instinct kept making me lift off the accelerator.<\/strong> There also weren\u2019t many places where I could rev the engine enough, so I practiced a little and decided to wait until I was past the Royu toll booth.<\/p>\n<p>The road to the toll booth has a series of fairly tight bends. <strong>It\u2019s narrow, too, with plenty of raised road reflectors<\/strong>, so I\u2019d always felt a little nervous driving the Boxster there. This time, though, what I\u2019d learned about steering technique at Porsche\u2019s driving school made the bends easier to handle. I could turn the wheel decisively without feeling scared.<\/p>\n<p>Well, having a GT3 under me probably helped a lot, too.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, I raised the front axle, wondering, \u201c<strong>Will I scrape the underside?<\/strong>\u201d My husband had told me, \u201c<strong>Royu is no problem at all. There are only two or three spots on the way back where you\u2019ll want to take it slowly.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16045\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6212-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once I was through the Royu toll booth, I gave the upshift a try. But sure enough, I lifted off the accelerator again (-_-). Even if I could keep my foot down, the thought of <strong>shifting up while still accelerating made me worry the car would lurch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I knew what I was supposed to do, but it was hard to shake a deeply ingrained habit.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16046\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6230-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I gave it a few attempts, but although the shifts were smooth, I never once heard that satisfying \u201c<strong>pshht!<\/strong>\u201d sound.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hmm\u2026 (-_-)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then I decided to try again on a long, gently uphill straight. \u201c<strong>If I can\u2019t do it on this long straight, I probably can\u2019t do it anywhere!<\/strong>\u201d I thought. So I took a deep breath and kept my foot on the accelerator. On the shift from third to fourth, I heard it: pshht!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-12076\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_0408-800x533.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Oh! So that\u2019s it! (\uff9f\u2200\uff9f)!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then I realized how tense my shoulders had become. I drove past the overlook, then tackled the next series of bends, recalling what I\u2019d learned in the slalom exercises. The GT3\u2019s handling is incredible. <strong>It turns so eagerly and feels so smooth.<\/strong> It has a different kind of brilliance from the Boxster\u2019s handling.<\/p>\n<p>I tried shifting up a few more times, but only three attempts really felt successful. Most of the time, <strong>I chickened out and lifted off the accelerator.<\/strong> I don\u2019t think I can commit unless there\u2019s plenty of room to accelerate. Maybe it just takes practice.<\/p>\n<p>When I stopped at the overlook and glanced over at the passenger seat, I found my daughter fast asleep (laughs). How on earth could she sleep through all that vrooming?<\/p>\n<p>After that, we took a little break at the overlook, which we had all to ourselves.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16048\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">The GT3 and Air-Cooled Porsches<\/h3>\n<p>On the way home, I drove with the window open and was surprised by <strong>how much the engine sounded like an air-cooled Porsche<\/strong>. It wasn\u2019t the big, dramatic soundtrack of a Boxster GTS. Instead, it had a <strong>mechanical, raw-edged sound<\/strong>\u2014a reminder that even in a modern 911 GT3, a little of that air-cooled character remains.<\/p>\n<p>My husband once told me that <strong>after driving a \u201973 Carrera, he got into the GT3 and thought the two cars felt remarkably similar<\/strong>. I can see why.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"q0eLsThf5G\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/73-carrera\/\">\u4f1d\u8aac\u306e911\u300173\u30ab\u30ec\u30e9\u306b\u3064\u3044\u306b\u4e57\u308b\uff01\u3082\u306f\u3084\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u754c\u306e\u91cd\u8981\u6587\u5316\u8ca1\u3001\u3044\u3084\u3001\u4e16\u754c\u907a\u7523\u3060\uff01<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201c\u4f1d\u8aac\u306e911\u300173\u30ab\u30ec\u30e9\u306b\u3064\u3044\u306b\u4e57\u308b\uff01\u3082\u306f\u3084\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u754c\u306e\u91cd\u8981\u6587\u5316\u8ca1\u3001\u3044\u3084\u3001\u4e16\u754c\u907a\u7523\u3060\uff01\u201d \u2014 \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30ba\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/73-carrera\/embed\/#?secret=RAmkzCKZRF#?secret=q0eLsThf5G\" data-secret=\"q0eLsThf5G\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When I got home, I drove our Panamera Turbo. <strong>The Panamera\u2019s usually substantial-feeling ride seemed almost light by comparison.<\/strong> The pedals and steering felt so light, too. It was a good reminder that the car you drove just before can completely change how you experience\u2014and judge\u2014the car you\u2019re driving now.<\/p>\n<p>I emailed my husband, who was still away on business, to tell him what I thought<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (Why am I emailing him while he\u2019s working?!)<\/span>. He replied:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">It\u2019s easy to ease off because you\u2019re used to doing that. You can do it pretty well in second to third, too. The important thing is to commit to it.<br \/>\nAnd the GT3 sounds like an air-cooled, doesn\u2019t it? That one isn\u2019t built to feel light like a modern car, so I think it still has a little of that old-school solidity.<\/p>\n<p>Every time I drive a different Porsche\u2014the GT3, the Panamera, the Boxster<span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"> (I haven\u2019t driven an air-cooled one lately\u2026)<\/span>\u2014I discover something new. I get a better sense of each model\u2019s character and the things they have in common. Cars really are endlessly fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m grateful to have the chance to drive so many different Porsches.
