Body Colors of Japanese Cars\u2026<\/h3>\n

The other day, when I was back at my parents\u2019 house talking with my dad\u2014who has absolutely no interest in cars\u2014he suddenly said this:<\/p>\n

\u201cJapanese cars don\u2019t really have good colors. European cars seem to have a lot of mature, understated colors, but Japanese cars don\u2019t seem to have those attractive options. So in the end, people just pick safe colors like black or white.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Wow\u2026 I never thought my dad was thinking about that. When I asked, \u201cDad, what color do you like?<\/strong>\u201d he said,<\/p>\n

\u201cHmm, I guess something grayish would be nice. A mature, calm color\u2014like the ones you often see on European cars.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wondered if he meant crayon-like colors. But actually, my mother-in-law once raved about crayon colors, saying, \u201cI love this color! If it\u2019s a Porsche like this, I\u2019d really like it!<\/strong>\u201d and kept saying that, haha.<\/p>\n

Maybe for my parents\u2019 generation, colors like gray or matte beige are easier to accept.<\/p>\n

Body Colors of European Cars<\/h3>\n

Then my dad continued,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to color, Japanese culture and Western culture are totally different.<\/strong> Maybe they have a stronger attachment to color over there. It feels like they have a richer variety of car body colors and carefully select from many options compared to Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n

That reminded me of an interview I once read with the former president of Porsche Japan, where he shared an interesting story about Italians\u2019 perception of color.<\/p>\n

When I said, \u201cColors should be the popular white or black,\u201d I was immediately told, \u201cBoss, in Italy, white and black are not colors. Red, blue, and green are colors. Do you understand?\u201d That shocked me. White and black are excluded from limited editions from the start.\u201d

Classic Italy\u2026! It\u2019s so cool how they can just say that to the boss like it\u2019s nothing.<\/p>\n

At that moment, I suddenly remembered an Instagram account my husband once showed me: \u201cporsche.sport.germany<\/a>.\u201d It features photos of Porsches spotted on the streets of Germany, showcasing body colors and combinations of soft tops and bodies that you rarely see in Japan,<\/strong> and it\u2019s really fun to look at.<\/p>\n

My husband checks it often too, saying things like, \u201cI never thought of this color combo~<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cIf I buy next, I want a color like this.<\/strong>\u201d When I showed this Instagram to my dad, he said,<\/p>\n

\u201cReally, this green is nice, isn\u2019t it? It\u2019s super cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

and kept looking at it, haha.<\/p>\n

Of course, some cars are wrapped in colors outside what manufacturers offer, but having a culture where you can freely play with your car\u2019s color is wonderful. And these Porsche colors really stand out beautifully against the backdrop of old European towns.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Japan, if you don\u2019t choose \u201cwhite, silver, or black<\/strong>\u201d for your car\u2019s body color, resale value drops, and more than that, you stand out too much on the streets. So there\u2019s a big part of \u201cI want a playful color, but it\u2019s actually hard to do so.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad Loves Toyota, But\u2026<\/h3>\n

After hearing my dad\u2019s thoughts, I realized that I had always thought \u201cDad has no interest in cars at all<\/strong>,\u201d but maybe it\u2019s because there aren\u2019t many attractive Japanese cars that make him say \u201cI want this!<\/strong>\u201d and that\u2019s why his interest in cars faded over time.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, when he rides in our family car, he asks, \u201cWhat\u2019s the engine displacement?<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cHow much horsepower does it have?<\/strong>\u201d and even talks about my brother\u2019s Subaru, saying things like \u201cSubaru is the only one in Japan still making boxer engines, huh?<\/strong>\u201d with a knowing tone (laughs).<\/p>\n

In the end, he started with the reliable, trouble-free \u201cToyota\u201d and trusts it completely, but if he had had a chance to drive a European car when he was younger, maybe he would have become more interested in cars than he is now.
