{"id":37772,"date":"2019-12-12T06:00:23","date_gmt":"2019-12-11T21:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/?p=37772"},"modified":"2019-12-11T22:45:25","modified_gmt":"2019-12-11T13:45:25","slug":"the-reason-i-became-manual-nori","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/en\/entry\/the-reason-i-became-manual-nori\/","title":{"rendered":"What Made Me, Someone Who Had Zero Interest in Cars, Decide to Become a Woman Who Can Drive a Manual Transmission"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"style3a\">The Time When I Had No Interest in Cars<\/h3>\n<p>As I\u2019ve written many times on this blog, <strong>I used to have absolutely no interest in cars.<\/strong> When I met my husband about 10 years ago, he was driving a BMW 318i, but since I wasn\u2019t interested in cars at all, I don\u2019t remember anything about how it felt to ride in it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11960\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/IMG_3187-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We often went out somewhere on holidays, so I rode in the car quite frequently, but I was asleep the entire time inside. For a long time, I was convinced that <strong>this car had 4 doors<\/strong>, so I was pretty shocked when I realized much later that <strong>it was actually a 2-door car<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s how little interest I had in cars\u2014I didn\u2019t notice anything at all.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in the fall of 2015, when my husband bought a Boxster GTS (MT), he persistently told me, \u201c<strong>Make sure to get rid of your automatic-only license before delivery!<\/strong>\u201d I reluctantly did, but over the next three and a half years, I drove the Boxster fewer than 10 times, stalling every time, and was nowhere near mastering a manual transmission.<\/p>\n<p>But this April, at the Royu Driveway lookout, I made up my mind: \u201c<strong>I\u2019m going to become a manual driver!<\/strong>\u201d and ended up buying a manual BMW 320i.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"AFnrcrhGPv\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/i-want-to-get-own-mt-car\/\">\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u306eMT\u8eca\u3092\u98af\u723d\u3068\u4e57\u308a\u3053\u306a\u3059\u3001\u304b\u3063\u3053\u3044\u3044\u5973\u6027\u306b\u306a\u308b\u305f\u3081\u306b\u3002<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/i-want-to-get-own-mt-car\/embed\/#?secret=AFnrcrhGPv\" data-secret=\"AFnrcrhGPv\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" title=\"&#8220;\u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u306eMT\u8eca\u3092\u98af\u723d\u3068\u4e57\u308a\u3053\u306a\u3059\u3001\u304b\u3063\u3053\u3044\u3044\u5973\u6027\u306b\u306a\u308b\u305f\u3081\u306b\u3002&#8221; &#8212; \u30dd\u30eb\u30b7\u30a7\u304c\u308f\u304c\u5bb6\u306b\u3084\u3063\u3066\u304d\u305f - \u30aa\u30fc\u30ca\u30fc\u30ba\u30d6\u30ed\u30b0\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to believe even to myself that someone who once had no interest in cars, and who had almost given up thinking, \u201c<strong>There\u2019s no way I can drive a manual<\/strong>,\u201d is now driving a manual every day and completely hooked on its charm.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">The 718 Boxster GTS Incident<\/h3>\n<p>Why did the switch suddenly flip, making me decide, <strong>\u201cI\u2019m going to become a manual driver!\u201d<\/strong>? After thinking it over, I realized something:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">My husband told me, <strong>\u201cDon\u2019t drive a manual for the first time,\u201d<\/strong> which lit a fire in my competitive spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, he had been constantly saying things like, \u201c<strong>Practice driving manual more!<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Aren\u2019t you going to drive the Boxster today?<\/strong>\u201d But that day at Royu, his attitude was different.<\/p>\n<p>As I wrote in that day\u2019s post, the owner of the 718 Boxster GTS (MT) kindly said, \u201c<strong>Wife, you should definitely try driving it too<\/strong>,\u201d and we were supposed to take turns driving the 718 Boxster GTS on the Royu Driveway.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_1755-800x547.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"547\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_1721-800x600.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At that time, <strong>I had zero confidence in driving a manual, and since it was someone else\u2019s precious car, I was very nervous,<\/strong> so my husband drove first. After a while, when he returned to the lookout, I asked, \u201cHow was it?\u201d and his first words were:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">Mina, you shouldn\u2019t drive this. You\u2019ll break the clutch. Let\u2019s skip it this time.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What\u2026!? (*_*)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Even though I lacked confidence, <strong>I was really looking forward to the rare chance to drive the 718 Boxster GTS<\/strong>, so that hope was instantly crushed. Immediately, a \u201cDamn it!\u201d feeling welled up inside me.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the owner kindly offers me to drive again in the future, I\u2019d have to get my husband\u2019s permission every time before I could drive\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"well3\">He always gets to have all the fun\u2026 But I, I can do it if I try!!!!<\/p>\n<p>My \u201c<strong>competitive spirit<\/strong>\u201d skyrocketed (laughs).<\/p>\n<p>Since that day, after thinking it over, I decided to buy a manual car myself to practice, and that month I purchased a used BMW 320i, which brings us to now.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/the-reason-i-became-manual-nori\/2\/\">Next page \u2192 Winning over your wife is just like romance\u2026!?<\/a><\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Marriage and Car Life<\/h3>\n<p>This whole sequence reminds me a lot of the saying in romance, \u201c<strong>If pushing doesn\u2019t work, try pulling.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until then, I had been told over and over, \u201c<strong>Drive, drive!<\/strong>\u201d and I kept refusing, saying \u201cNo, I can\u2019t, thanks.\u201d But the moment I was a little willing to try, I was told, \u201cDon\u2019t drive,\u201d which lit a fire (laughs).<\/p>\n<p>My husband didn\u2019t say that to provoke me on purpose; I think<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">\u201cHe really thought my driving skills at the time would break the clutch of the owner\u2019s precious car, so he stopped me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But this was the unexpected result. I\u2019m sure even he was surprised by how things turned out\u2026 lol<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s not like saying \u201c<strong>If your wife won\u2019t drive, just tell her not to<\/strong>\u201d is the solution. When I asked, \u201c<strong>Why go so far to practice manual driving?<\/strong>\u201d she said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well\">Our kids have grown up and become independent, so it\u2019s just the two of us now. I was wondering what we\u2019d do with our time together when my husband said, \u201c<strong>How about learning to drive a manual?<\/strong>\u201d If I could drive a manual, we could go on drives and trips together, and that sounded fun, so I decided to practice.<\/p>\n<p>For this wife, I think the switch was \u201c<strong>making the time spent as a couple richer and more enjoyable<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_5461-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Looking at this couple, I thought, \u201c<strong>They seem really close and happy.<\/strong>\u201d What\u2019s important is the foundation of their everyday relationship as a couple, and then the timing when child-rearing settles down perfectly set the stage for the wife to practice driving manual.<\/p>\n<p>In our case, <strong>it took about 10 years from when we met until I started driving manual.<\/strong> When our child was born, I was often irritated and would fall asleep while putting the baby to bed, so there was almost no conversation between us for quite a while.<\/p>\n<p>I think the timing when I became interested in manual driving also coincided with our second child growing a bit and us gaining some breathing room in parenting.<\/p>\n<p>Well, marriage really isn\u2019t something simple or straightforward\u2026 lol<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Time When I Had No Interest in Cars As I\u2019ve written many times on this blog, I used to have absolutely no interest in cars.
