Everyday Use of the 911 GT3<\/h3>\n

We have a 911 GT3 Touring Package at home. The brochure describes the Touring Package as \u201ca car designed not just for the circuit but to enjoy driving experiences on various occasions<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This 911 GT3 Touring, which promises \u201cdriving enjoyment on various occasions<\/strong>,\u201d makes me wonder: how practical is it really for daily use?<\/strong> Can I just go to the local supermarket, do some shopping, and come back without any issues\u2026?<\/p>\n

From my wife\u2019s perspective, this was a big question, so I decided to actually test it out.<\/p>\n

\u2460 Can it clear bumps?<\/h3>\n

The first thing I was curious about was whether it could \u201cget into the supermarket parking lot without any trouble crossing the curb<\/strong>.\u201d So, I took the GT3 there right away.<\/p>\n

My husband equipped this GT3 with the \u201cFront Axle Lift System<\/strong>\u201d option, so I had to remember to press that button.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I wondered if it would be better to approach the bump at a slight angle\u2026 but I crossed it slowly and was able to enter the parking lot without any problems.<\/p>\n

Afterwards, I checked the slope and bump of this supermarket parking lot again, and it was gentler than I expected. At this level, even a GT3 should be able to climb it without issue.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So, I decided to try a nearby pharmacy with a steeper bump and slope. Pressing the lift button again, I climbed slowly and had no trouble there either.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Photos don\u2019t quite capture the thickness of the bump or the steepness\u2026 (-_-) But it\u2019s clear the GT3 can handle this level. Some convenience stores have tougher bumps, but most should be manageable.<\/p>\n

When I asked my husband, he said slopes like these parking lots are no problem at all.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I heard that the GT4 can\u2019t be equipped with the lift option and often scrapes the bottom, but since the GT3 can have the lift option, you don\u2019t need to be overly worried<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

My husband also said, \u201cSo far, as long as I use the front lift to raise the ride height, I don\u2019t recall scraping the car during everyday use.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2461 What about parking stops?<\/h3>\n

The GT3\u2019s rear diffuser fins stick out quite a bit underneath, so my husband says, \u201cBacking all the way to the parking stop in a normal parking lot is basically impossible<\/strong>.\u201d The height from the ground to the fins is only about 8\u20139 cm, so even the raised center part of mechanical parking pallets can cause scraping. (The mechanical parking he often uses has just a few millimeters of clearance, and if the tires wear down more, it might scrape.)<\/p>\n

Even if it scrapes, the fins are made of relatively soft plastic, so they won\u2019t snap off but may bend and partially recover. Still, it\u2019s best to avoid scraping altogether.<\/p>\n

By the way, these rear diffuser fins are the same shape as on the 911R and have been fitted since the late 991 GT3. So, earlier GT3 models don\u2019t have these and aren\u2019t as sensitive.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Well, I guess it\u2019s common sense for sports cars to stop just before the parking stop to avoid scraping the bottom, but with the GT3 Touring, it\u2019s especially nerve-wracking. So no matter where I park, I always have to park with about half the car sticking out in front (lol)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Other drivers might think, \u201cWhat\u2019s with this Porsche? Park further back, you\u2019re in the way<\/strong>,\u201d but it\u2019s not about wanting to stand out, parking carelessly, or bad manners\u2014it\u2019s just that I physically can\u2019t park any further back\u2026 and I want to make that very clear.<\/p>\n

\u2462 How\u2019s the ride comfort?<\/h3>\n

At low speeds, the ride comfort is honestly not great. It\u2019s among the worst cars I\u2019ve ridden in, and at least among the Porsches I\u2019ve experienced, it feels the least comfortable.<\/p>\n

On smooth roads, it\u2019s still okay, but on rough surfaces, it easily picks up bumps and feels quite harsh. My husband once said about this:<\/p>\n

The suspension is definitely stiff, but since the GT3 is rear-engine, I think the front spring rate\u2014which affects ride comfort\u2014isn\u2019t that stiff. Rather, the short suspension stroke is what causes the poor low-speed ride comfort<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For a wife used to smooth, comfortable cars like Mercedes or Lexus, riding in the GT3 might lead to a first impression of \u201cWhat is this uncomfortable car? And it\u2019s so expensive!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

So in those cases, I think it\u2019s best to explain beforehand that \u201cthis is a racing car that can run on circuits, completely different from your usual car\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the ride comfort on the highway is very smooth and supple<\/strong>. It\u2019s almost unrecognizable as the same car, and I even think, \u201cIsn\u2019t this better than the Boxster?\u201d It\u2019s that smooth and pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Next page \u2192 How much luggage can it carry? What about fuel economy? Clutch operation?<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

<\/p>\n

\u2463 How much luggage can it carry?<\/h3>\n

Regarding luggage, it can actually carry quite a bit. Unlike regular 911 models, the GT3 is a two-seater, but if you don\u2019t have a roll cage, there\u2019s enough space in the back to comfortably fit two kids<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So even if you put your supermarket shopping in the back seat, there\u2019s still plenty of room.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

You can casually toss in coats and bags, and it\u2019s still fine.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When loading luggage, you can adjust the seat lever to tilt the seat back slightly (not fully reclined)<\/span>, making it easier to load.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

You can hang coats behind the seats, and since there\u2019s more space behind than in a two-seater Boxster, it\u2019s easier to hang them.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Also, here\u2019s the trunk capacity.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We keep a body cover in there, but a medium-sized suitcase fits comfortably. It should be no problem to load groceries for a weekend shopping trip.<\/p>\n

However, the GT3\u2019s trunk can get quite hot, so when driving long distances, it\u2019s best to be cautious with fresh food or spray cans. My husband says the front radiator\u2019s heat flows directly into the trunk. By contrast, the Boxster\u2019s trunk doesn\u2019t get nearly as hot, so this seems unique to the GT3.<\/p>\n

\u2464 How is the clutch operation?<\/h3>\n

The GT3 (991.2) clutch is light. Before riding, I thought, \u201cSince it\u2019s a race-spec car, the clutch must be heavy<\/strong>,\u201d but it\u2019s actually much lighter than the 981 Boxster GTS clutch, so there\u2019s no worry about \u201cgetting tired during daily use<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cnot being able to drive long distances<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, I find hill starts tricky. If I try to start like I do in the Boxster\u2014gently pressing the accelerator\u2014I sometimes stall. When I told my husband about this, he said:<\/p>\n

Yeah, that\u2019s a bit tough. It\u2019s basically a racing engine, so compared to the Boxster, the GT3 has less torque at very low RPMs and a slightly taller gear ratio<\/strong>. So it\u2019s better to give it a bit more throttle. Also, on gentle slopes where hill hold doesn\u2019t activate, lightly slipping the clutch to prevent rolling back works well. That\u2019s the same for the Boxster. But the engine response is insanely sharp, so if you\u2019re not paying attention and step on it too hard, things can get wild<\/strong> lol.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t quite gotten the hang of this yet, so I need more practice. Racing engines are no joke.<\/p>\n

\u2465 What about fuel economy?<\/h3>\n

On this day, the fuel consumption was \u201c29.9 l\/100 km,\u201d which means \u201c3.3 km\/l<\/strong>.\u201d I\u2019ve never seen fuel economy this bad before (laughs).<\/p>\n

It would improve on highway cruising, but this trip was short-distance, with many traffic lights and heavy city traffic, so the fuel economy ended up this poor.<\/p>\n

By comparison, even the Panamera Turbo gets about \u201c4 km\/l\u201d in similar conditions.<\/p>\n

However, the overall fuel economy since delivery is \u201c13 l\/100 km (7.6 km\/l),\u201d and my husband says it\u2019s been improving since delivery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Can the GT3 really be used daily?<\/h3>\n

The 911 GT3 Touring is more practical for everyday use than I imagined<\/strong>. Going to the local supermarket and running errands is no problem at all.<\/p>\n

But for me, the biggest drawback of the 911 GT3 is that it\u2019s a two-seater<\/strong>. Since I often have to pick up my eldest daughter with my youngest in tow, a car with three or more seats is essential (though three seats don\u2019t really exist lol)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Also, kids tend to mess up the interior, so honestly, I don\u2019t want to put them in the GT3. In fact, the Panamera\u2019s interior already has dirt on the floor and stained leather seats.<\/p>\n

So for everyday driving, I end up using the BMW 320i, which seats five, has decent fuel economy, and can handle a bit of mess inside<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Well, that\u2019s just how it is while the kids are small.<\/p>\n
