An Unforgettable Beloved Car<\/h3>\n

My husband, a self-proclaimed car enthusiast, says there\u2019s one car in his history that he still can\u2019t forget. That car is the Honda Legend Coupe (KA8)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

He often finds himself saying things like, \u201cI drove this road in the Legend<\/strong>\u201d or \u201cI wish I could drive the Legend Coupe again<\/strong>.\u201d Such is his fondness for the Legend Coupe that he happened to connect with a fellow owner on Instagram, met up with them at the Royu Driveway, and even got to test drive the car.<\/p>\n

This time, my husband has written a report about the Legend Coupe (KA8).<\/p>\n

Honda Legend Coupe (KA8)<\/h3>\n

When talking about his car history, there\u2019s one car he can\u2019t leave out: the Honda Legend Coupe (KA8)<\/strong>. However, it wasn\u2019t his first car. His first car was a 2-door hardtop Legend (KA3) passed down from his father, the predecessor to the KA8.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He vividly remembers the very first day he drove it, even the road itself: Prefectural Route 724 in Tatsuno City, Hyogo Prefecture.<\/p>\n

Until then, he had only driven his mother\u2019s Honda Today kei car, but when he first got behind the wheel of his father\u2019s Legend, he was blown away. The solid feel of the car was completely different, the way it traced curves without slipping, and the impressive high-speed stability for the time left a strong impression.<\/p>\n

He thought, \u201cCars can feel this different depending on the model!<\/strong>\u201d for the first time.<\/p>\n

Soon after, the Legend 2-door hardtop (KA3) needed an engine overhaul due to high mileage and was unfortunately scrapped.<\/p>\n

Captivated by the Legend\u2019s charm, he borrowed money from his parents and, even as a student, managed to buy the successor model, the Legend Coupe (KA8) Alpha Touring grade, for 1.68 million yen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Legend Coupe he drove back then<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

From the time he saw the KA8 on the streets while still driving the KA3, he was captivated by its design\u2014the distinctive rear styling different from the sedan, and the sharp front end\u2014and dreamed of driving one someday.<\/p>\n

He recalls the mileage was around 60,000 km when he bought it, but he ended up driving it for about 100,000 km.<\/p>\n

His impression at the time was that despite the large body, having only two doors felt luxurious and stylish. It had outstanding high-speed stability among Japanese cars, a sporty yet incredibly comfortable ride, and an engine that revved beautifully\u2014he was completely hooked.<\/p>\n

The Legend Coupe he drove back then<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

He traveled all over Japan in that Legend Coupe. On weekends, summer and winter holidays, whenever he had free time, he was on the road. (Well, not much different from now, haha)<\/span><\/p>\n

He once circled Shikoku in about 16 hours while camping in the car, drove endlessly along Route 8 just for the fun of \u201cconquering Route 8,\u201d and traveled to Kanto, Shinshu, Kyushu, Hokuriku, even driving in heavy snow with chains in the trunk.<\/p>\n

His current driving addiction started with those journeys in the Legend Coupe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He even went skiing in the Legend and deliberately drove through heavy snow areas.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

Along the way, he fixed various troubles like broken auxiliary parts and coolant leaks inside the engine, but eventually passed the car on to a friend around 2003 and stopped driving the Legend.<\/p>\n

In fact, until around 2003, he ran a fan site for the Legend Coupe called “The Coupe of LEGEND.”<\/strong> It featured a bulletin board for owners and compiled various information about the Legend Coupe.<\/p>\n

Reunion with the Legend Coupe<\/h3>\n

One day, he discovered the beloved Legend Coupe owner on Instagram. After chatting, he found out the owner lived nearby and owned a nearly original-condition Legend Coupe Alpha Touring.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When they met at the Royu Driveway, it turned out the owner was a student whose father\u2019s beloved car had been passed down to him. He was also a passionate driver.<\/p>\n

It was like seeing his past self, and they happily lost track of time chatting about cars.<\/p>\n

\"Honda<\/p>\n

The Legend Coupe shown was the same Alpha Touring grade he had driven.<\/p>\n

The Alpha Touring was the top-grade model, featuring 16-inch aluminum wheels, firmer suspension, a unique vertical grille, red-stitched leather seats, red meter needles, and a C32A Type II engine with about 20 more horsepower.<\/p>\n

\"Honda<\/p>\n

This C32A engine is a sibling to the C30A engine used in the NSX at the time. It shares the same bore but has a slightly longer stroke, making it 3200cc. It\u2019s SOHC and doesn\u2019t have VTEC, but it\u2019s a very good engine that revs lightly and produces that unmistakably pleasant Honda engine sound at high revs.<\/p>\n

\"Legend<\/p>\n

This Legend Coupe is a one-owner car.<\/strong> The proof is in the two-digit license plate. While many Legends have lowered suspension or aftermarket wheels, this one still wears the original Alpha Touring wheels and has been carefully maintained to this day.<\/p>\n

According to the owner, there is some leather wear on the seats and a sliding issue with the passenger seat due to aging, but it runs perfectly fine.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Honda<\/p>\n

Personally, I love the design. Especially the rear view, the low, solid stance from the front three-quarter angle, and the sharp front mask\u2014it’s still my favorite design.<\/p>\n

Driving the Legend Coupe After 16 Years<\/h3>\n

The 4-coat, 4-bake painted body still shines brilliantly. Opening the door reveals just how heavy it is. It\u2019s heavier than I remembered. Even the AMG S63 Coupe has hefty doors, but the Legend\u2019s feel more solid and dense.<\/p>\n

When you close the door, the auto-closer quietly pulls it shut. The seats are coupe-exclusive sports seats with firm side bolsters, quite firm compared to other Japanese cars of the era.<\/p>\n

The car I drove back then had stiffer leather, but this one\u2019s leather feels softer. These seats are incredibly comfortable and fatigue-free.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Honda<\/p>\n

The interior is luxuriously appointed for its time, with a Tendo Mokko genuine woodgrain center console, a rare gas-rate sensor-based inertial navigation & GPS factory navigation system, and a LUXMAN pure sound system. It was basically fully loaded for the era.<\/p>\n

Starting the engine wakes it instantly, and the engine noise is noticeable. This is one difference from the Celsior and other luxury sedans of the time, which were quieter but sometimes felt less engaging.<\/p>\n

The Alpha Touring seats are fully power-adjustable with memory functions.<\/strong> Sitting in the driver\u2019s seat again after so long, I realized the seating position offers excellent visibility and is very easy to drive.<\/p>\n

\"Driving<\/p>\n

Though the car sits low, the front, rear, and side visibility is good, and the low dashboard gives a feeling of controlling the car from above. The steering wheel is electrically adjustable for fine tuning, allowing a truly relaxed and perfect driving position.<\/p>\n

Looking back, this comfortable driving position might explain why long drives never felt tiring.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pressing the accelerator, the 4-speed automatic shifts from 1st to 2nd with a noticeable shift shock, a nostalgic feel. Many automatics back then were like this.<\/p>\n

However, this particular car\u2019s shifts are smoother and less noticeable than the one I drove, suggesting it\u2019s in very good condition.<\/p>\n

Taking the Shakago corner, I felt the familiar understeer. More precisely, it doesn\u2019t really turn much at all.<\/strong> It tends to push wide more than expected.<\/p>\n

At first, I was thrown off, but memories came flooding back and I got used to it.<\/p>\n

I love the rear view of this Legend Coupe. It still looks cool today.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

The heavy front-wheel-drive feel of pulling the car forward is nostalgic. Tight corners are a challenge, but gentle curves feel wonderful. Applying a little throttle while cornering keeps the front flat and the car glides through smoothly. I always loved that feeling in the Legend Coupe.<\/p>\n

The ride quality, compared to modern cars, has some drivetrain roughness but is overall smooth and flat.<\/strong> Body roll is noticeable but manageable depending on how you apply weight. My vague past memory was that the body felt more flexible and the ride a bit rougher, but compared to that, this car feels much more solid and comfortable.<\/p>\n

Driving it brought back vivid memories: commuting to school and part-time jobs, solo long tours, drives with friends, university life, club activities, relationships, and the music he listened to back then.<\/p>\n

Cars can act like a kind of time machine, bringing back memories you\u2019d forgotten.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Honda<\/p>\n

Braking before corners feels soft and the brakes engage deep into the pedal travel, unlike modern cars. At first, I wondered if they were weak, but the effective braking point is far down. Once you get used to it, it\u2019s not unsettling.<\/p>\n

Revving the engine a bit triggers a quick kickdown, and the engine responds eagerly. This is classic Honda. The engine sound is refined yet sporty. It\u2019s unmistakably the sound of a Honda V6.<\/strong> I savored the nostalgia as I focused on the engine.<\/p>\n

The power output is 235 ps with 29.5 kgf\u00b7m torque. The Type II C32A in the Alpha Touring produces 235 ps at 6300 rpm, making it a high-revving engine that\u2019s a joy to spin. It\u2019s not blisteringly fast, but the performance never feels frustrating.<\/p>\n

Though he didn\u2019t get to test it on the highway this time, driving the straight stretch of the Royu Tunnel clearly showed the Legend\u2019s excellent straight-line stability.<\/strong> He\u2019s always thought the Legend\u2019s high-speed stability ranks among the best of Japanese cars. The predecessor KA3, the KA8, and the later KA9 all excelled in stability and confidence at high speeds.<\/p>\n

Having experienced many imported and domestic cars since, he still believes the Legend\u2019s high-speed stability is something to be proud of.<\/p>\n

The Legend Is the Legend<\/h3>\n

By the end of the test drive, he felt like he\u2019d returned to the present from a time machine, unsure of his own age.<\/p>\n

The Legend Coupe he drove again was exactly the same as the one in his memories.<\/strong> It\u2019s a car that makes you want to drive forever, not too slow, not too fast, just flowing at a slightly brisk pace.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s driven many large coupes like the S63 Coupe and SL500 seeking that same feel, but none compare. The Legend Coupe\u2019s ride is truly one of a kind.<\/p>\n

The Legend is, after all, the Legend.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s deeply grateful to the owner who kindly showed him such a rare car. The owner said, \u201cYou just want to keep driving the Legend and going on drives forever.\u201d<\/strong> That feeling is exactly the same as his own. There\u2019s definitely something special about this car.<\/p>\n

Parts are now hard to find and repairs can be difficult, but he hopes the owner will cherish it and keep driving it. And secretly, he looks forward to the day they can go on a tour together in their Porsches.<\/p>\n
