Since we\u2019re thinking about replacing our Panamera next year, we were chatting about \u201c<strong>what should our next car be?<\/strong>\u201d and my husband said he was \u201c<strong>interested in the Continental GT<\/strong>,\u201d so we decided to go test drive it together.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, not long ago, I had the chance to drive the Bentley Bentayga briefly. The <strong>Bentayga felt like a smoother, more refined version of the Cayenne<\/strong>, which really surprised me, so I was very curious about <strong>what the Continental GT would be like<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the morning of the test drive, it had rained quite a bit the day before, but by the time we arrived at the dealer, the rain had stopped. Thank goodness\u2026!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6502-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Bentley showroom atmosphere was completely different from Porsche\u2019s. It felt like stepping into a luxury watch boutique\u2014clean, elegant, and pristine.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6531-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6505-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sales staff didn\u2019t feel like typical car salespeople; they had the demeanor of <strong>concierges at a luxury hotel<\/strong>. That\u2019s Bentley for you\u2026!<\/p>\n<p>While they were preparing the test car, I chatted a bit with the salesperson.<\/p>\n<p>The Continental GT comes in W12 (12-cylinder) and V8 models, but the V8 won\u2019t be delivered until next year. By the way, the W12 model has a subtle \u201c12\u201d embossed near the lower side panel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6506-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The V8 sports a V8 badge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6508-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, the exhaust tips differ between the W12 and V8. The W12 has oval-shaped exhausts, while the V8 features quad exhausts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6507-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When I mentioned, \u201c<strong>I always imagined the W12 would have quad exhausts<\/strong>,\u201d I was told that the oval exhaust is a Bentley tradition, so the W12 carries this signature design.<\/p>\n<p>Since Bentley is now part of the Volkswagen Group, they share many components within the group. Safety features have also been significantly enhanced compared to previous models.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>platform is the same MSB large rear-wheel-drive architecture used by the Panamera<\/strong>. From behind, it somehow reminds me of the Panamera.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16408\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6504-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The trunk is a bit smaller since it\u2019s a coupe <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(358L vs. Panamera\u2019s 500L)<\/span>, but there have been cases where customers who couldn\u2019t fit their golf bags in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe trunk found that they fit perfectly in the Continental GT, which influenced their purchase decision.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Test Driving the Continental GT<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, the moment we\u2019d been waiting for: the test drive. The test car was the \u201cContinental GT W12.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16436\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6548.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16418\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6541-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16418\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6541-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are the main specs:<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">\u30fb6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 TSI<br \/>\n\u30fbMaximum output: 635 PS<br \/>\n\u30fbMaximum torque: 900 Nm<br \/>\n\u30fb8-speed dual-clutch transmission<br \/>\n\u30fb3-chamber air suspension, CDC<br \/>\n\u30fb0-100 km\/h in 3.7 seconds<br \/>\n\u30fbTop speed: 333 km\/h<br \/>\n\u30fbLength: 4,880 mm, Width: 1,965 mm, Height: 1,405 mm, Curb weight: 2,260 kg<br \/>\n\u30fbOptional 22-inch wheels<\/p>\n<p>I heard the previous generation had very heavy doors, so some people who knew that might find the doors on this model \u201ctoo light and lacking,\u201d but since I never experienced the previous model, I felt the doors had a nice solid weight.<\/p>\n<p>When you open the door, you\u2019ll notice a special design on the floor mats commemorating Bentley\u2019s 100th anniversary, limited to this year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6515-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My husband drove, and I experienced the ride from the passenger seat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6518-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once underway, as expected from Bentley, the ride was very smooth, much like the Bentayga. When going over bumps, there was almost no jolt; it just glided over them.<\/p>\n<p>However, I had imagined a Bentley luxury coupe would feel very soft and plush, but compared to that, the suspension felt quite firm and composed.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s because this is Bentley\u2019s sportiest model.<\/p>\n<p>The seats and interior quality were truly impressive. <strong>Luxury radiates throughout, and it\u2019s simply stunning.<\/strong> The interior is traditional, profound, and sophisticated\u2014so beautiful that I found myself gazing at it often (laughs).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6523-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16423\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6522-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6519-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Being able to drive in such a magnificent space is surely one of the Continental GT\u2019s biggest appeals.<\/p>\n<p>The passenger seat ride was very smooth and comfortable, but <strong>the seat was tighter than I expected.<\/strong> I had imagined wide, plush seats like those in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe, but the interior is designed to be tighter than the S-Class coupe.<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s a luxury car, the seats have a sporty feel, which felt natural and even comfortable to me since I usually drive sport models.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16425\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6521-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After some time driving, my impression was that \u201c<strong>the Continental GT is very similar to the Panamera<\/strong>.\u201d Of course, the Panamera is definitely more of a sports car, but<\/p>\n<p class=\"well2\">If I were switching from a Panamera, I\u2019d want a luxury model that\u2019s completely different. If it feels too similar, I\u2019d end up missing the Panamera.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what I said, and the conversation turned to \u201c<strong>then how about the Continental GT?<\/strong>\u201d But since it was sportier than I imagined, I felt I\u2019d constantly compare it to the Panamera every time I drove it. <span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">(It\u2019s natural since they share many components.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Continental GT is, of course, an amazing car, and if I didn\u2019t know the luxury sports Panamera, I\u2019d probably fall in love with it instantly.<\/p>\n<p>But now that I know the Panamera, my conclusion was, \u201c<strong>the Continental GT is quite similar, the Panamera is more agile and fun to drive, the rear seats are roomier, so I prefer the Panamera after all.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m really sorry for being so biased toward the Panamera\u2026 (-_-)<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/entry\/continental-gt-testdrive\/2\/\"><strong>Next page \u2192 What did my husband think of the Continental GT!?<\/strong><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Husband\u2019s Impressions of the Continental GT<\/h3>\n<p>Since the first generation of the Continental GT came out, as a fan of large coupes, I\u2019d always been interested in this car. This was my first time test driving the Continental GT, and I was quite excited as I opened the door and got in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16426\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6534-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After adjusting the seat position and pressing the engine start button, the W12 engine roared to life with a sound <strong>that rivals the Panamera Turbo\u2019s thunderous growl.<\/strong> I had expected a gentle, feather-like sound similar to Rolls-Royce\u2019s 12-cylinder engines, so this surprised me.<\/p>\n<p>The salesperson said the <strong>W12 sounds more aggressive and sporty than the V8.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At first, as I gently pressed the accelerator to get onto the road, the tires rolled smoothly but not overly soft. <strong>The ride was soft but with a firm core.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I increased speed, the ride felt very similar to the Panamera.<\/p>\n<p>I think sharing the same platform plays a big role, but still, it\u2019s remarkably alike. <strong>It has a solid planted feel, and it pleasantly surprised me by being sportier than the luxury ride I had imagined.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>transmission is the same 8-speed dual-clutch as the Panamera\u2019s PDK.<\/strong> So, while shift shocks are minimal, you can clearly feel the gear changes, emphasizing the sporty character.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6520-1280x960.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The steering feedback is balanced\u2014not too heavy or light\u2014and you can feel the tires\u2019 grip quite well.<\/p>\n<p>If I could drive with my eyes closed, I think it would be hard to distinguish this from a Panamera Turbo on city streets. Although both are luxury large coupes, this is <strong>very different from the AMG S63 coupe I previously owned.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>when taking corners or intersections with some vigor, the body roll is more noticeable than expected.<\/strong> It\u2019s not unsettling, but this is a big difference from the Panamera Turbo, which stays flat at all times.<\/p>\n<p>So far, these impressions were in Bentley\u2019s recommended Bentley mode.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"style4b\">Sport and Comfort Modes<\/h4>\n<p>Next, I switched to Sport mode. The suspension clearly stiffened, <strong>feeling like the Panamera Turbo\u2019s Normal to Sport mode ride.<\/strong> The exhaust note got louder, and the car felt tighter overall.<\/p>\n<p>On a slightly open straight, I pushed the W12 engine hard, and <strong>the acceleration was as fierce as expected.<\/strong> The tachometer needle smoothly climbed without resistance, producing a thrilling sound. Yet, the cabin remained calm and stable, so it wasn\u2019t intimidating.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its heavy body, the handling was surprisingly nimble. The brakes were, of course, very reassuring.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6542-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using the paddle shifters to shift through 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears, <strong>you can hear the satisfying \u201cbaf!\u201d sound of gear changes, showcasing the quick response unique to dual-clutch transmissions.<\/strong> It\u2019s not lightning-fast, but definitely not slow.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I felt the Panamera\u2019s PDK shifts a bit slower.<\/p>\n<p>I realized Bentley is more sporty than I had thought, especially given their strong involvement in racing. Many Japanese might associate Rolls-Royce and Bentley with pure luxury, but <strong>at least this new Continental GT balances luxury with a clear focus on sportiness, which was a big revelation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"style3a\">Will We Buy the Continental GT?<\/h3>\n<p>Switching to Comfort mode, the suspension softened dramatically, becoming gentle and smooth. <strong>This mode is perfect for cruising slowly through the city at night.<\/strong> Quiet and comfortable, it embodies the classic luxury coupe ride. This is my favorite mode in this car.<\/p>\n<p>The test drive lasted only a few dozen minutes, so I couldn\u2019t grasp everything, and I\u2019m sure there are many things I didn\u2019t fully understand, but <strong>in my opinion, the Continental GT is perfect for those seeking a sporty luxury coupe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you find the AMG S63 coupe a bit too luxurious and want a sportier interior and sharper driving feel, this car is ideal.<\/p>\n<p>So, <strong>if you want a more relaxed, ultra-luxurious ride, Mercedes might be a better fit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.panamera-life.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/IMG_6546-1280x960.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If I were to position the Continental GT among the cars I\u2019ve owned, I\u2019d say it sits between the AMG S63 coupe and the Panamera. <strong>It offers both sportiness and luxury at a high level.<\/strong> So, I highly recommend it to those who want that balance.<\/p>\n<p>For me, considering it as a replacement for the Panamera Turbo, <strong>it was sportier than I expected, so it overlaps too much with the Panamera Turbo, which makes the decision tricky.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though it\u2019s sporty, <strong>the Panamera Turbo is still sportier in degree.<\/strong> The car is very well made with no complaints, but for this replacement, I might have been looking for something more opposite to the Panamera Turbo.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking that way, the new Flying Spur arriving soon in Japan might be a better match.
