PS4 racing game “Gran Turismo SPORT (hereafter: GT Sport)<\/strong>” is the focus of the YouTube channel “GTsport Broadcast Station<\/a>.” When I recently watched a virtual race on this program, I was struck by how “incredibly fun GT Sport really is<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

So this time, I interviewed MC Rico Otsuka, who plans and runs this channel, and GT Sport player Tatsuya Sugawara<\/strong>, and had a great conversation with both of them.<\/p>\n

Hooked on the Charm of GT Sport\u2026<\/h3>\n

First, could you please briefly introduce yourselves?<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Sure. I\u2019m currently a 22-year-old university junior. I\u2019ve been playing Gran Turismo for 16 years now.<\/p>\n

This year, I participated in the FIA GTC 2019 World Tour and achieved my best result with 2nd place<\/strong>. I\u2019m also currently serving as an ambassador for Porsche Esports Racing Japan.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: I\u2019m a working adult, a bit older than Sugawara-kun (laughs). I usually work as a model, MC, and on TV, but in 2019 I served as the assistant MC for the Porsche Carrera Cup Japan (hereafter: PCCJ) and Porsche Sprint Challenge Japan (hereafter: PSCJ).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I just started playing Gran Turismo recently, but under Sugawara-kun\u2019s guidance, I\u2019m honing my skills.<\/p>\n

What kind of program is \u201cGT Sport Broadcast Station\u201d?<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: “GT Sport Broadcast Station<\/strong>” is an authorized YouTube channel of Porsche Esports Racing Japan.<\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s on YouTube, it feels more like a radio show. We invite GT Sport players and guests from various fields to chat, and we also hold GT Sport races featuring Japan\u2019s top players. The goal is to energize and spread the word about PS4\u2019s GT Sport<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Rico-san plans the program\u2019s framework and structure, and I decide the race regulations (rules).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: Of course, there\u2019s no script for the races themselves, but for the talk segments, we prepare scripts and hold rehearsals beforehand.<\/p>\n

The channel is still new, but we\u2019ve had a lot of support from many people, which we\u2019re truly grateful for.<\/p>\n

In virtual races, you can run cars with the same design as the real ones, right?<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: GT Sport has a livery editor feature.<\/strong> This allows users to customize the exterior colors and designs of cars within GT Sport, and by sharing these designs publicly, other users can freely download and use them.<\/p>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: In GT Sport, there are players who specialize in racing, and then there are \u201clivery artists<\/strong>\u201d who design car bodies.<\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Exactly. These \u201clivery artists<\/strong>\u201d create original colorings, but they also often recreate the liveries of real racing cars.<\/p>\n

They take photos of the actual cars and use them as a base to create the designs. While they don\u2019t get official permission from the teams, they\u2019re not misusing the designs. In fact, when they send the finished designs to the teams, the teams are usually delighted<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The recent PCCJ Virtual Exhibition Match featured cars with real designs running, which was really cool!<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Yes. For that race, we obtained permission from PCCJ teams in advance and received data to faithfully reproduce the designs on the cars we raced<\/strong>, which is quite rare.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Super Formula itself actually holds virtual races organized by the official body. In such cases, it\u2019s almost impossible for us to use real car designs on our program.<\/p>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: For larger-scale races, there are many sponsors and stakeholders, so getting permission from everyone is impossible. This is something only PCCJ can do.<\/strong><\/p>\n

PCCJ is very homey in a good way. When we started broadcasting \u201cGTsport Broadcast Station,\u201d I casually asked a PCCJ team owner, \u201cCould we get the real car data?<\/strong>\u201d and they readily agreed.<\/p>\n

When I asked other owners, they all said, \u201cSure! Use it!\u201d<\/p>\n

And amazingly, 16 liveries were completed in just one week<\/strong>. The owners also said, \u201cThis is something only PCCJ can do.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The real car owners who saw the program seemed really happy, too.<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: That\u2019s right. I can picture both the faces of the real car drivers and those driving in GT Sport, which feels strange but very heartwarming.<\/p>\n

Also, virtual races held in this format are very rare, so we\u2019ve been contacted for interviews and feel the growing attention<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why did you two decide to start this channel together in the first place?<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: It started when I invited Sugawara-kun, saying, \u201cWant to do this together?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

We met about half a year ago. This year, \u201cGT Sport Porsche Esports Racing Japan\u201d held its first-ever domestic GT Sport \u201cSeason 1\u201d<\/strong>, with the finals at Fuji Speedway in June.<\/p>\n

Ten GT Sport players who won the national qualifiers gathered for the finals, and Sugawara-kun won.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: It was close at times, but I\u2019m glad I won (laughs).<\/p>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: I had never played GT Sport before, but Porsche Japan told me beforehand, \u201cPlease MC and commentate the GT Sport final race<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was like, \u201cWait, what\u2019s that!?\u201d (laughs) Since I was going to MC, I thought I had to learn about GT Sport, so I bought a PS4 and GT Sport and practiced. By the time of the finals, I had a good idea of what GT Sport was\u2026<\/p>\n

But when I saw the final race live, I was deeply moved.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I thought, \u201cThis is so cool!\u201d and got totally hooked. I even went to watch GT Sport tournaments in person.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Gradually, I started thinking,<\/p>\n

\u201cIsn\u2019t there a way to share the amazing GT Sport players and the fun of GT Sport with even more people?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Before starting \u201cGT Sport Broadcast Station,\u201d I had my own channel. It wasn\u2019t regular; I just casually talked, sometimes raced, or explained how to drive on circuits.<\/p>\n

One time on the show, I casually said, \u201cTalking alone gets boring, so maybe I should take questions and do something like a radio show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rico<\/span><\/strong>: I happened to hear that episode and thought, \u201cOh, Sugawara-kun wants to do something like a radio show! How about we make a radio program together!?<\/strong>\u201d At the same time, I wanted to create an environment where I could do live commentary,<\/strong> so I immediately contacted him.<\/p>\n

\u201cShall we start a radio show together?<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

He replied, \u201cSure,\u201d so we decided to do it together.<\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: But honestly, I wasn\u2019t super eager to do radio; I just said it lightly and didn\u2019t expect someone to be so enthusiastic (laughs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connection with Porsche Japan<\/h3>\n

Why did you reach out to Sugawara-san instead of other players?<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: On the day of the finals at Fuji Speedway in June, Sugawara-kun approached me, and of course, his winning the race was also a connection.<\/p>\n

As we communicated, I felt Sugawara-kun was a good person, easy to be around, honest, and serious about his work.<\/p>\n

I felt a spark inside me.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/span><\/strong>: No, I\u2019m just bad at flattery.<\/p>\n

Rico<\/span><\/strong>: What do you mean? (laughs)<\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: I tend to say exactly what I think, without sugarcoating it like a typical Japanese person\u2026 Regarding the radio, I thought it sounded interesting, so I said \u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rico<\/span><\/strong>: So at first, it was just the two of us starting it on our own.<\/p>\n

How did it develop into an authorized channel by Porsche Japan?<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/span><\/strong>: We planned the show, wrote scripts, and thought, \u201cOne hour is fine\u2026 and the name can be something like \u2018Cinderella at 11 PM\u2019\u2026\u201d We announced it on Twitter, and two days before the broadcast, I was at a real PCCJ race as assistant MC.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, Matsuoka-san from Porsche Esports Racing Japan called me over and said,<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the way, you\u2019re doing a GT Sport radio show, right? You can do it as an authorized Porsche channel.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was momentarily confused (laughs).<\/p>\n

When I asked for details, Matsuoka-san said,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you\u2019re trying to do really resonates with me and Porsche Esports Racing Japan. So Porsche Japan wants to support you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So suddenly, \u201cGTsport Broadcast Station<\/strong>\u201d was launched as an official channel. I was so excited I called Sugawara-kun immediately, but he didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

After many calls, when he finally picked up, his first words were \u201cGood morning.\u201d But it was already afternoon (laughs).<\/p>\n

I excitedly told him, \u201cHey, hey!!! Something amazing just happened!\u201d<\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: It really shows the power of human connections. Winning the Porsche GTSport race in June opened up many Porsche-related opportunities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve loved Porsche for a long time and have always used Porsche in the \u201cGT Manufacturer Series\u201d (a championship where drivers sign contracts with manufacturers and compete for wins).<\/p>\n

I really love Porsche.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So I was very motivated for the June finals of \u201cGT Sport Porsche Esports Racing Japan.\u201d There were moments when I thought, \u201cI might lose,\u201d but luck was on my side, and I\u2019m glad I won.<\/p>\n

Winning there is why I\u2019m here now.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Sugawara-san, were you always a car enthusiast?<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Yes. I\u2019ve liked cars since I was little. From about age five, I often went to watch races at circuits.<\/p>\n

I used to watch the predecessor to Super GT, JGTC, and always watched PCCJ as a support race.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t go specifically for PCCJ, more like I watched it while attending other races. I loved the flat-six engine sound and thought, \u201cWow, Porsche is so cool,\u201d as they roared down the home straight.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when I became interested in Porsche.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Also, in one-make races, Porsche\u2019s design is overwhelmingly cool.<\/strong> The cup cars don\u2019t look like showroom cars with simple color changes; they look like full-on racing cars.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They\u2019re fast and have a certain romance (laughs).<\/p>\n

Plus, the street-legal Porsches have similarly great engine sounds. When I see them on the street, I naturally follow them with my eyes and eventually became a big Porsche fan.<\/p>\n

What made you start playing GT on PlayStation?<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/span><\/strong>: On my sixth Christmas, Santa gave me a PS2, Gran Turismo 3, and a steering wheel controller.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I got hooked on racing games and didn\u2019t play other types of games. I loved cars more than games,<\/strong> so I enjoyed racing games as a substitute for driving before I had a license.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Later, when I went to driving school to get my license, they told me, \u201cYour driving is too smooth for a beginner. Be more cautious\u201d (laughs).<\/p>\n

Because I had knowledge of car behavior, I think I was better at driving than most beginners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GT: From Japan to the World<\/h3>\n

Now you\u2019re traveling the world on the World Tour?<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Yes. Traveling overseas multiple times a year is a rare experience for a normal student, so I\u2019m very grateful.<\/p>\n

This year, I\u2019ve been to four countries.<\/strong> In March, Paris; in June, N\u00fcrburgring in Germany.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The N\u00fcrburgring 24-hour race was happening then, so I got to watch that, and personally, Germany was my favorite experience.<\/p>\n

In August, Salzburg, Austria; and in November, Monaco.<\/strong> Unlike last year, the weather was bad this year, which was disappointing. There was a talk show with GT maestro Lewis Hamilton, GT producer Yamauchi-san, and top GT drivers worldwide.<\/p>\n

Last year, I had time to take photos with Lewis Hamilton, but this year, unfortunately, I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In October, the World Tour\u2019s Japan round was held in Odaiba, Tokyo, and I realized again:<\/p>\n

Japan has amazing food!<\/strong> (laughs) Japan really is a great country.<\/p>\n

Also, since the venue was just 30 minutes from my university, I managed to attend classes between events and participate in the tournament.<\/p>\n

Being a student makes it easier to join so many World Tour events. As a working adult, even with paid leave, taking four week-long breaks a year would be tough.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So I think, \u201cThis kind of chance to travel abroad won\u2019t come often, so I\u2019ll go while I can!\u201d Though I still have to attend classes (laughs).<\/p>\n

I also plan my semesters carefully, thinking, \u201cThere are two world championships in the second half, so I\u2019ll work hard to get credits in the first half.\u201d<\/p>\n

How do you cover travel expenses for overseas events?<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: All travel expenses are covered. Players are basically invited to participate<\/strong>, so flights, hotels, and even racing gear are provided. I was lucky to attend all World Tours except New York this year.<\/p>\n

Rico-san, have you always liked cars and motorsports?<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/span><\/strong>: I wasn\u2019t a big car fan, but my father loves cars<\/strong>, so from a young age, he took me to car dealerships, and I had some general knowledge about \u201cwhat kinds of cars exist in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was a sporty girl from childhood: volleyball in elementary school, softball in middle school, track and field in high school, and long-distance running on the university ekiden team.<\/p>\n

After graduating, I moved to Tokyo.<\/p>\n

My first involvement with motorsports was as a race queen. But as I did it, I realized, \u201cI\u2019m not cut out to be a race queen<\/strong>,\u201d and I found actual races more fun, so I got hooked on that side.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I later quit being a race queen and worked more like a manager among the team staff. That\u2019s when I started understanding the structure of races and differences between various series\u2026<\/p>\n

Studying all that deepened my love for motorsports, and this year I was fortunate to serve as assistant MC for PCCJ and PSCJ.<\/p>\n
