PS4 racing game “Gran Turismo SPORT” (hereafter: GT Sport) enthusiast YouTube channel “GTsport Broadcast Station” MC Rico Otsuka and GT Sport player Tatsuya Sugawara interview. We delivered the first half of the article recently,<\/a> and this time it\u2019s the latter half. Please enjoy. <\/p>\n

GT and Real Cars<\/h3>\n

By the way, what should we call online racing?<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: Sugawara-kun and I have seriously discussed this, but it\u2019s surprisingly tricky. <\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Generally, the term eSports is widespread, but from our perspective, GT Sport feels different from typical eSports<\/strong>. Still, since it\u2019s under the broad umbrella of gaming, for simplicity\u2019s sake, calling it eSports is fine, I guess.<\/strong><\/span> <\/p>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: There are many ways to think about it, aren\u2019t there? <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

Are real car races and virtual races completely different things?<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Yes. I believe you shouldn\u2019t compare games and real cars with the same yardstick<\/strong>. They\u2019re totally different. <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve watched races since I was little, so I have knowledge about real cars, but it\u2019s unthinkable that I\u2019d be invited to commentate on real races, right? <\/p>\n

But the reverse happens quite often.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Some pro racers are \u201cdual wielders\u201d who do both gaming and real racing, so I understand their commentary, but when someone with zero gaming knowledge talks only from real car experience, it feels very off.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Also, we don\u2019t intend to compete with real cars, but sometimes real racers blatantly look down on us, saying, “It\u2019s just a game, after all!<\/strong>” <\/p>\n

But I think it\u2019s not about which is superior or inferior. They simply can\u2019t be compared.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: There\u2019s still a strong image in society that “real cars are more impressive<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n

GT Sport\u2019s cars look and behave realistically, so some people treat it like real cars. Others think, “Real car races are amazing; GT Sport is just a copy of real cars<\/strong>,” but as Sugawara-kun says, games and real cars are completely different. <\/p>\n

Real car racing is, of course, incredible! But virtual racing has its own unique appeal.<\/strong> It\u2019s important to see them as entirely different sports. <\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: The real racing world is either a business or funded by wealthy individuals. Just entering a race costs a lot of money<\/strong>, so even if you want to participate, it\u2019s not that easy. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

On the other hand, anyone can join GT, and even if you invest in gaming equipment, you can start with about 100,000 to 200,000 yen<\/strong>. That\u2019s less than the cost of a cheap used car in real life. <\/p>\n

Also, real cars have maintenance costs, but in GT, once you have your setup, tires don\u2019t wear out, cars don\u2019t break from crashes, and no one gets hurt. If anything, it\u2019s just the electricity bill (laughs). <\/p>\n

I think the amazing thing about GT is that it dramatically lowers the barrier to entry for motorsports<\/strong>. It\u2019s revolutionary. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

Indeed, it\u2019s amazing that people of all ages and genders from around the world can participate. Are there other unique appeals of GT?<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: I think the fun of GT is that you can compete purely based on driving skill<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

In real car \u201cone-make races,\u201d it\u2019s said that “all machines have no performance differences<\/strong>,” but in reality, there are quite a few differences. Perfect equal conditions don\u2019t exist in real cars.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

But since GT is data-based, it\u2019s easy to achieve equal machine conditions<\/strong>. You compete purely on driving skill. That\u2019s why it\u2019s fun, and that\u2019s a fundamental difference from real cars. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not about better or worse, simply, real cars and GT are different<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Also, GT is a game, but unlike Mario Kart, you can\u2019t drop bananas or anything, right? (laughs)<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Exactly (laughs). Among eSports, GT is very unique. It has no game-like elements at all.<\/strong> Other games have items and game mechanics. <\/p>\n

Like you said, in Mario Kart, you can drop banana peels to trip up the leader and overtake them, but GT has none of that. <\/p>\n

So playing GT with school friends isn\u2019t very fun. I always win, and they never can, so they say, “This is boring<\/strong>” (laughs). <\/p>\n

I think there are few games where skill differences show as much as in GT. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: I bought GT for the first time this year and have been learning from Sugawara-kun as my mentor. But I always think, “He must find it boring to put up with someone this bad\u2026 I feel sorry<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n

So sometimes we play tag or drive the wrong way, making up our own weird rules to have fun<\/strong> (laughs). That\u2019s also part of GT\u2019s fun. <\/p>\n

GT Sport is a gentleman\u2019s game\u2026 it values sportsmanship, right?<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: Yes. In most eSports categories, the winner is the one who defeats the opponent<\/strong>. So, even if you use items or tricks, if you beat the opponent, you win<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

But GT is different. It works because everyone races with sportsmanship. <\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Right. In other games, you don\u2019t need to care about your opponent. But GT is different. <\/p>\n

You\u2019re required to respect your opponents while racing<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

For example, during braking, you could intentionally not slow down and crash into the car ahead<\/strong>, or bump an opponent to overtake during a battle<\/strong>. Unlike real cars, nothing breaks and no one\u2019s life is at risk, so you could do anything if you wanted. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s why we must respect each other and race based on trust for the race to work<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

In tournaments, the same members often race together repeatedly. So if you don\u2019t respect others, they\u2019ll block your racing line in another race<\/strong>, and it will come back to you. <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve seen many players ruin relationships with others due to rough driving.<\/strong> So it\u2019s important to respect others. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s more fun that way, and winning with dirty driving doesn\u2019t make me happy (at least). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Bridge Between Real and Virtual<\/h3>\n

Same parts as real cars, but different charm and fun. It\u2019s great if both thrive.<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: Yes. The reason I wanted to try the PCCJ Virtual Race was because I wanted to be a bridge between real racers and virtual racers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\u201cReal and virtual are completely different,\u201d but is it okay to just end it there?<\/p>\n

Some real racers might think, “They\u2019re just gamers; they can\u2019t actually drive real cars, right?<\/strong>” On the other hand, GT Sport players might think, “Real racers are different from us\u2026<\/strong>” <\/p>\n

Rather than cutting off there, I hoped to create a place where we could share the joy and fun of car racing and learn about the unique appeal of both real and virtual worlds<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

To do that, we created a communication platform to connect both sides. This PCCJ Virtual Race was planned and held as that bridge. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

And it turned out to be very good for both sides.<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: Yes. As I mentioned earlier, during the process of receiving real car design data from PCCJ drivers and creating their cars, some drivers who didn\u2019t know what GT Sport was<\/strong> learned about it, were happy to see their cars created, and were thrilled when GT Sport players drove and won with their cars. <\/p>\n

Later on SNS, some real racers even said, “I bought GT too!<\/strong>” <\/p>\n

Conversely, some GT Sport players became interested in learning about “what kind of race PCCJ is<\/strong>,” “which drivers participate<\/strong>,” and “what companies sponsor the logos<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n

It may be a small thing, but I felt very happy that we could be a bridge between virtual and real racers<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Rico-san hasn\u2019t become too immersed in either the real or virtual side. Because she\u2019s not biased, she can do things like this. <\/p>\n

Also\u2026 she\u2019s good at relying on others. For example, I think she\u2019s good at using me (laughs). <\/p>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: The other day, Sugawara-kun and I had a tearful discussion. <\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/span><\/strong>: I was just calmly stating my opinion, but she started crying\u2026 I was like, \u201cDon\u2019t cry!\u201d (laughs) <\/p>\n

Rico<\/span><\/strong>: I got carried away and thought, \u201cIt\u2019s embarrassing for an older person to cry,\u201d but I got too passionate and ended up crying (laughs). <\/p>\n

Passionate\u2026 this kind of effort might help combat car disinterest among youth.<\/h4>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: Yes. I think GT Sport has a huge promotional effect on young people who will buy cars in the future. It gives them a chance to think, “I want to drive this car someday<\/strong>” and “I\u2019ll earn money and buy this car<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n

Rico<\/span><\/strong>: The famous GT producer Yamauchi-san said, \u201cPlayStation was once seen as just a game console, but now it might become the savior of the automotive industry<\/strong>,\u201d and I completely agree. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

The Future of GT Player and MC<\/h3>\n

Finally, could you share your future plans?<\/h4>\n

Rico<\/strong><\/span>: I truly believe that the current developments are thanks to human connections<\/strong>. Especially Mr. Matsuoka from Porsche Japan, who supports eSports and young people\u2019s ambitions like no one else in any industry. <\/p>\n

I\u2019m full of gratitude. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

In Japan today, \u201cyoung people\u2019s disinterest in cars\u201d and \u201cdecline of car culture\u201d are seen as issues, but as Yamauchi-san said, GT can be a key to solving these problems and revitalizing car culture<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s why from \u201cGTsport Broadcast Station,\u201d we want to launch projects to further energize GT Sport, driven by ourselves. <\/p>\n

What I want to do now is to make the PCCJ Virtual Race a series next season<\/strong>. Since it\u2019s online, there are bugs and sometimes players can\u2019t join, but we want to learn and improve as we go. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

Sugawara<\/strong><\/span>: For me\u2026 I made many new connections this year, so I hope to meet many more great people next year. <\/p>\n

Also, I want to become world champion in the World Tour.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve reached second place before, but I really want to be number one. This year, I participated in five World Tour races and felt the level rising, so to keep up next year, I have to work even harder. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always been competitive, but before I used to think, “Third place is fine. I\u2019m happy to be on the podium<\/strong>.” <\/p>\n

But when you finish third, you get some attention right after the race, but after two or three months, most people forget about third place. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s when I realized: <\/p>\n

People only care about the winner. So you have to win.<\/p>\n

Actually, because I won Season 1 of GT Sport Porsche Esports Racing Japan, I now have a good relationship with Porsche Japan and this channel started<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\"\" <\/p>\n

Rico<\/span><\/strong>: From now on, I want to plan various projects with everyone and keep the excitement going. Eventually, I hope to be the MC of GT Sport tournaments while Sugawara-kun races there. I want to keep improving my MC and commentary skills! <\/p>\n
