Next Candidate After the Panamera<\/h3>\n

Since last fall, we\u2019ve been going back and forth, agonizing over \u201cwhat to do about replacing our Panamera that\u2019s almost been with us for three years<\/strong>.\u201d (I wrote about the candidate cars in this earlier article<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

This summer, with our third child born, our family will become five members, and naturally, when choosing a car, the thought was \u201cif it\u2019s Porsche, then it has to be the Cayenne<\/strong>.\u201d But it wasn\u2019t that simple\u2026 After about half a year of consideration, we finally decided on the next car after the Panamera.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

So, I\u2019d like to share why we struggled so much choosing the next candidate, and ultimately, which model we decided on<\/strong> (grades and details will be in the follow-up article)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re thinking, \u201cWho cares about someone else\u2019s family car choices? lol,\u201d that\u2019s totally fine\u2026 (laughs) I hope only those interested will keep reading.<\/p>\n

Our Family\u2019s Car Life<\/h3>\n

What I felt when deciding on the next candidate after the Panamera is that \u201cour family\u2019s car life has changed dramatically since we ordered the Panamera three years ago<\/strong>.\u201d To put it simply,<\/p>\n

\u2460 I learned to drive a manual transmission car
\n\u2461 Our car lineup has grown
\n\u2462 For long trips, we go with two cars now
\n\u2463 We needed a car that\u2019s easy to maneuver
\n\u2464 I got hooked on Porsche<\/p>\n

That\u2019s about it.<\/p>\n

\u2460 I Learned to Drive a Manual Transmission<\/h4>\n

Three years ago, our family\u2019s cars were the \u201cPorsche 981 Boxster GTS (MT)<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cPorsche 970 Panamera Edition<\/strong>,\u201d and \u201cVolkswagen Golf 7<\/strong>.\u201d The Boxster was for my husband\u2019s touring and drives, the Golf was his commuter car, and the Panamera was my everyday car.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Back then, I couldn\u2019t drive a manual at all and had given up thinking \u201cI\u2019ll never be able to drive an MT car in my life<\/strong>,\u201d so the Panamera was everything in my car life.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The whole family could ride in luxury, yet it could run sportily. Compared to other manufacturers\u2019 models in the same class, the Panamera was by far the most sporty car<\/strong>, so switching from the 970 Panamera to the 971 Panamera was a relatively easy decision. (I only struggled with which grade to choose within the Panamera lineup.)<\/span><\/p>\n

But life is funny, and now the situation has completely changed.<\/p>\n

Since I somehow learned to drive manual cars, I can now also drive the Boxster and GT3, which I couldn\u2019t before.<\/strong> Of course, the Panamera remains a wonderful sports car, but I\u2019ve come to realize that \u201cthe 911 GT3 and Boxster let you truly enjoy the essence of a sports car\u2019s driving<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nowadays, while my eldest daughter is at kindergarten or when my husband takes the kids to the park, I often take the Boxster out, and compared to last year, I go out in the Boxster quite frequently.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2461 Our Car Lineup Has Grown<\/h4>\n

Three years ago, our family had the \u201c981 Boxster GTS (MT),\u201d \u201c970 Panamera Edition,\u201d and \u201cVolkswagen Golf 7,\u201d but now, we have this many cars\u2026<\/p>\n

1. Porsche Boxster GTS MT (981)<\/a>
\n2. Porsche Panamera Turbo (971)<\/a>
\n3. Porsche 911 (964 C2)<\/a>
\n4. Porsche 911 GT3 Touring MT (991.2)<\/a>
\n5. Note e-POWER NISMO S: Husband\u2019s commuter car<\/a>
\n6. BMW 320i MT (F30)<\/a><\/p>\n

Only two people have licenses, yet the number of cars keeps growing\u2026<\/p>\n

Normally, \u201cthis many cars aren\u2019t necessary for a family of four<\/strong>,\u201d but my husband is very thorough when buying cars and only buys when fully satisfied, so he\u2019s happy with all of them.<\/p>\n

I really think the Boxster, GT3, and air-cooled 911 are all masterpieces. Each has its own unique charm and appeal, so if I let any go, I\u2019d regret it terribly later.
\nI simply can\u2019t part with any of them, so the only option is to add more cars.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He often mutters this.<\/p>\n

He also says, \u201cI\u2019ll work hard to maintain these cars!<\/strong>\u201d and shows zero interest in anything else like clothes, food, or housing, putting all his heart and soul into cars. (Lately, he says \u201cApple Watch is enough\u201d and has lost interest in watches.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the car I often drive is my beloved 320i. I originally bought it myself to learn how to drive a manual, but its size is just right, it\u2019s very practical, and manual driving is fun, so I still drive it often.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u2462 For Long Trips, We Go with Two Cars<\/h4>\n

Before, when we went on family trips or long drives, we took the Panamera. It was perfect for four people to ride comfortably, sporty, and fun \u2014 truly the best car.<\/p>\n

But once, when my husband planned to \u201cdrive the Boxster at Fuji Speedway<\/strong>,\u201d we had to follow along, and obviously, one Boxster alone couldn\u2019t carry all of us, so for the first time, we went with two cars.<\/p>\n

At first, I worried, \u201cCan I really drive 1,000 km round trip all by myself?<\/strong>\u201d but after trying it once, it was no problem and actually fun. Since then, we\u2019ve gone on trips with two cars like \u201cBoxster and Panamera,\u201d \u201c964 and Panamera,\u201d and \u201cGT3 and 320i.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Just recently, we got a bit carried away and went out with the Boxster and GT3<\/a>, and I thought, \u201cOur idea of 2-seater + 2-seater = 4-seater for our family is just crazy\u2026<\/strong>\u201d (Grateful for such a luxurious environment)<\/span><\/p>\n

So, when replacing the car this time, we concluded that \u201ceven if five of us can\u2019t ride comfortably together, the NISMO Note or, at worst, two cars will do just fine<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2463 We Needed a Car That\u2019s Easy to Maneuver<\/h4>\n

With our third child arriving this summer, we\u2019ll be visiting hospitals a lot while the kids are small.<\/strong> One-month checkups, vaccinations\u2026 probably monthly hospital visits.<\/p>\n

Also, both our eldest and second daughter regularly go to preventive dental care, and we often visit dermatologists. Last year, the second daughter caught a cold at daycare, which then spread to the eldest, creating a negative spiral where we were taking both to the hospital almost every week.<\/p>\n

Why does more hospital visits mean needing a car that\u2019s easy to maneuver? Because parking lots at local hospitals are all very tight. Really tight. Even now, the Panamera can\u2019t fit, and the Cayenne would be even more impossible.<\/p>\n

Considering this, our family now needs a car that\u2019s easy to handle in tight spaces.<\/p>\n

\u2464 I Got Hooked on Porsche<\/h4>\n

Looking at points \u2460 through \u2463, it would be reasonable to say \u201csell the Panamera and not replace it with another Porsche<\/strong>,\u201d but\u2026<\/p>\n

I never imagined that I, who had no interest in cars at all, would become so captivated by Porsche. There are many wonderful cars in the world, and when I ride them, I think \u201cnice!\u201d but after driving a Porsche, I find myself saying things like Kazuo Shimizu, \u201cAh, it really is Porsche\u2026<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When a baby is born, life becomes all about caring for the baby, and you lose your personal time, so I probably won\u2019t be able to freely drive cars like before for a while.<\/strong> Plus, there\u2019s the older two kids to raise.<\/p>\n

Also, since the Boxster and GT3 are two-seaters, the rear-facing baby seat can\u2019t be safely placed in the back, so it has to go in the front passenger seat. Without the Panamera, I wouldn\u2019t be able to drive any Porsche for several months.<\/p>\n

Just thinking about that is despairing\u2026 (-_-)<\/p>\n

So,<\/p>\n

I know it\u2019s a luxury request, but please keep one Porsche that can seat four. (I can\u2019t drive the air-cooled ones in summer\u2026)<\/span>
\nI have almost no other material desires and don\u2019t want any luxury brands, so this is my only wish. Otherwise, I\u2019ll run out of blog topics and might have to end the blog\u2026!<\/p>\n

When I pressed my husband like this, he said, \u201cOkay, I understand.\u201d Thank you\u2026<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the Next Car After the Panamera?<\/h3>\n

Summarizing the above, considering points \u2460 to \u2464, the Cayenne and Panamera are too big for our current lifestyle.<\/p>\n

The \u201cTaycan\u201d was also an option, but even though it\u2019s a bit smaller than the Panamera, it\u2019s still quite large, and we thought, \u201cMaybe we should wait a bit longer to see what Porsche\u2019s electric cars are really like<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, what Porsche model is compact, seats four, and fits the bill? The remaining choice was the \u201c911\u201d! So, we decided the next candidate after the Panamera is the 911 (992).<\/strong> Regarding this whole car selection process, my husband said,<\/p>\n

I originally said, \u201cWhy not just go with the 911?<\/strong>\u201d sometimes, and maybe it sounded like a joke, but I was actually serious (laughs).
\nHaving driven the 992, if you look only at the \u201cpeak fun\u201d moment, the air-cooled and GT3 are better, but this 992 is even easier to drive and more comfortable than its predecessor.<\/strong> In that sense, it\u2019s more practical for everyday use. It feels like you can experience high performance more easily in daily life.
\nAlso, other manufacturers make good cars, but it\u2019s still Porsche.<\/strong> It\u2019s not about handling limits or that kind of thing \u2014 even just turning at an intersection feels natural to me.<\/strong> It feels great to have the car respond exactly as I want.<\/p>\n

Indeed, this natural feeling of being one with the car is hard to find in other cars. Then he continued,<\/p>\n

Recently, I was impressed by what Kazutoshi Mizuno, the Nissan GT-R developer, said when he drove the GT3.
\n\u201cHe adds about 0.05 seconds of play in the steering gain, and at the end, gives the human driver a moment to \u2018push\u2019 when controlling it. Only someone who knows the field can make this. It can\u2019t be made from drawings or analysis. It can\u2019t be made by the manufacturer\u2019s power alone.
\nThe driver who knows racing, the driver who knows both racing and production cars, and the engineer who knows both racing and production cars \u2014 they have to work as a team, sensing the car\u2019s movements intuitively rather than through words, to make a car like this.
\nThis isn\u2019t a car made by a manufacturer; it\u2019s a car perfectly made by people.<\/strong>\u201d
\nHearing that, I was truly convinced. I think that\u2019s the difference from other manufacturers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, buying a 4-seater 911 for a family of five\u2026 well\u2026 (lol) This got long, so I\u2019ll stop here for today.
